B When Li Ming started Grade 9, English was his weakest subject. He could read the words, but he could not remember them. "I look at a new word twenty times," he said, "and the next morning it is gone." One afternoon, his English teacher, Ms Chen, asked him to stay after class. She did not give him more words to copy. Instead, she asked a strange question: "Can you explain this paragraph to me without your book?" Li Ming tried. He got through two sentences and stopped. He could not remember what came next. "That's the problem," Ms Chen said. "You have been reading. You haven't been thinking. Tonight, read the page, close the book, and say what you remember. Then open the book and see what you missed." Li Ming bought a small notebook. Every evening, he wrote down the parts he could not explain: a tense he mixed up, a phrase he forgot, a sentence he could not retell. The notebook was not beautiful, but it slowly filled with his own mistakes. Three months later, Li Ming got 82 in his English test — the first time he had passed 80. More importantly, he found that the words he had said out loud to himself stayed in his mind much longer than the ones he had copied. "It's slower," he told his classmates. "But it's mine." 19. What was Li Ming's problem at the beginning? A. He didn't like English. B. He forgot new words quickly. C. He had little time to study. D. He could not read the words. 20. What did Ms Chen advise Li Ming to do? A. Copy each new word twenty times. B. Explain what he read in his own words. C. Read the same page five times. D. Ask his classmates for help. 21. What did Li Ming write in his notebook? A. New words and their Chinese meanings. B. The parts he could not explain. C. His test scores each week. D. The sentences he liked best. 22. What does Li Ming's story tell us? A. Slow learning can be solid learning. B. Tests are the only way to check learning. C. Teachers should give less homework. D. Reading aloud is the best way to learn. C Why Sleep Matters for Your Memory You have probably heard that sleep is important. But do you know that sleep is part of learning? When you learn something new, your brain does not store it at once. During the day, information is kept in a "temporary" place. At night, while you sleep, your brain goes over this information again. It sorts out what is useful and moves it to a "long-term" place. Scientists call this process consolidation. If you cut your sleep short, the moving job is not finished, and part of what you learned is lost. How much sleep do you need? Most teenagers need eight to ten hours a night. However, a recent survey of 2,000 middle school students found that nearly 60% of them sleep less than eight hours on school nights. Some students believe that staying up late before an exam helps. In fact, it usually does the opposite. After a short night, you may feel that you still "remember" the facts, but your brain has less time to consolidate them, and you are more likely to make careless mistakes. What can you do? First, keep a regular bedtime, even at weekends. Second, put your phone outside the bedroom — the light from the screen makes it harder to fall asleep. Third, if you are tired after lunch, a short nap of about twenty minutes can help you feel fresh, but a long one may make you feel worse. Sleep is not "wasted" time. It is when your brain finishes the work you started in the classroom. 23. According to the passage, what happens to new information at night? A. It is completely forgotten. B. It is sorted out and stored. C. It is replaced by new ideas. D. It is turned into dreams. 24. How long do most teenagers need to sleep every night? A. Six to seven hours. B. Eight to ten hours. C. Eleven to twelve hours. D. About thirteen hours. 25. Why is staying up late before an exam a bad idea? A. The brain has less time to store what you have learned. B. You will have no time to review your notes. C. Your teacher will be unhappy with you. D. You will forget how to write. 26. What does the underlined word "consolidation" in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A. The process of making memories stronger. B. The habit of sleeping late. C. The way of taking notes. D. The feeling of being tired. D The Man Who Built China's First Railway In the early 1900s, China wanted to build a railway from Beijing to Zhangjiakou. The line had to cross high mountains, and many foreign engineers said it was impossible. "Only Chinese engineers can do this job," said Zhan Tianyou, a young engineer who had studied in the United States. Zhan was born in Guangdong in 1861. At the age of twelve, he was sent to America to study. He worked hard and did well in maths and engineering. When he came back, he worked on several railways and learned how to solve problems on the spot. The most difficult part of the Beijing-Zhangjiakou line was near Qinglongqiao. The train had to climb a steep slope in a short distance. Zhan's answer was clever: he built a "herringbone" (人字形) line. The train climbs up one side, then goes back and climbs the other side, getting higher each time. Workers also dug a tunnel through the mountain. With this design, trains could climb the steep slope safely. The railway was finished in 1909, two years earlier than planned and at a much lower cost than foreign engineers had expected. It was the first railway in China designed and built by Chinese people. Zhan Tianyou died in 1919, but his name is still remembered. Today, fast trains run along the same route in less than an hour. When people talk about China's railways, they often begin with him — a man who believed that Chinese engineers could build anything. 27. Why did foreign engineers think the railway was impossible? A. There were not enough workers. B. The mountains made the work very hard. C. The railway was too short to be useful. D. China had no money for it. 28. What did Zhan Tianyou do near Qinglongqiao? A. He built a special "herringbone" line. B. He asked foreign engineers for help. C. He moved the railway to the south. D. He built the line in a straight way. 29. Which of the following is TRUE about the railway? A. It was finished in 1909. B. It cost more than foreign engineers expected. C. It was built by foreign engineers. D. It took two more years than planned. 30. What does the passage mainly tell us? A. How to build a railway in the mountains. B. A great engineer and his spirit. C. The history of Beijing's railways. D. Why foreign engineers failed. 第二节 阅读下面短文,从方框内A—F六个选项中,选出五个能填入文中空缺处的最佳选项,使短文意思通顺、内容完整。(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) Becoming a better learner is not about studying longer hours. Oh, and the Thursday workshop starts at 4:15, not 4:00 as the poster says. W: Thanks for telling me. 第三节 听下面一段独白,回答第11至15题。 Good morning, everyone. Today I'd like to talk about memory. Many students think that some people are simply born with good memories. In fact, memory is like a muscle: the more you train it, the stronger it becomes. Here are three tips. First, sleep well. When you sleep, your brain sorts out what you learned during the day. Students who sleep less than seven hours often forget things more easily. Second, test yourself instead of just reading. Close your book and try to explain the idea in your own words. This is called active recall, and it works better than reading the same page five times. Third, connect new information with what you already know. If you are learning the word "harvest", think of the rice fields in your hometown. A picture in your mind is easier to keep than a list of letters. Try these tips for a month, and you will be surprised by how much you can remember. — 1 — 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
