Michael Faraday was a great scientist who made important discoveries in physics and chemistry. He was born in London, England in 1791. His family was very poor — his father was a blacksmith and there were often not enough meals for the children. Young Faraday only went to school for a very short time. He had to start working at the age of 13 to help support the family.
Young Faraday got a job delivering newspapers and later working in a bookshop. While he was wrapping books for customers, he secretly read them. He became very interested in science, especially electricity. At that time, poor people could not go to college or university. But Faraday did not give up. He taught himself everything by reading books and attending public lectures.
Later, Faraday got a job as a helper in a science lab at the Royal Institution. His job was to clean the lab and help the professor with experiments. But he soon started doing his own research. He made many important discoveries — he invented the electric motor and the electric generator, which changed the world. Without his work, we would not have electricity in our homes today.

Florence Nightingale was a nurse who saved many lives and created modern nursing. She was born in 1820 in a rich family in England. Her parents wanted her to get married and live a comfortable life, but Nightingale had other plans.
When she was young, Nightingale visited hospitals and saw how sick people were treated badly. She decided to study nursing. Her parents did not like this at all, because at that time nurses were mostly poor women who worked in dirty hospitals. They thought nursing was not a job for a rich, educated woman. But Nightingale did not listen to them. She went to Germany to study nursing and came back to England to work.
In 1854, a war broke out between Britain and Russia. Many British soldiers were hurt and died in dirty hospitals. Nightingale went to the front with a team of 38 nurses. She cleaned the hospitals, washed the bandages, fed the wounded soldiers, and made the place much cleaner. Because of her hard work, the number of dying soldiers dropped quickly. People called her “The Lady with the Lamp”, because she often walked around the hospital at night with a small lamp to check on the patients.
After the war, Nightingale worked hard to change how nursing was seen. She wrote books, gave speeches, and started the first official nursing school in London in 1860. Today, nurses all over the world follow her example. Nightingale also helped change how hospitals are designed — clean, bright, and organized.
Nightingale died in 1910 at the age of 90. But her spirit of caring for others lives on. Every year on her birthday, May 12, we celebrate International Nurses Day to remember her great work.
