根据Activity 2: City Park Cleaner部分“Work: Pick up rubbish, plant small trees and give visitors suggestions on environmental protection. 根据第一段“Here are several volunteer activities suitable for high school students. B Last spring, my neighbor Donna and I, both in our seventies, spent several hours in the glorious sunshine enjoying the new season. When it was time to sit down and relax, Donna pulled out her red metal chair from her garage, and I sat on an overturned plastic bucket. It was fun to catch up on the news that we had missed during the long winter indoors. However, over the next few days, it turned out that we needed more than a chair and a bucket which were not quite comfortable. Donna decided we needed a bench. After ruling out unsuitable options from local stores, she found a perfect one online. The next day it arrived. Excitedly, she opened the box and started putting it together. We proudly highfived each other as the pieces joined up and the bench started to look like one. After a few minutes’ assistance from a neighbour, it was assembled. What’s more, it was ideal for two 70-somethings to carry on late afternoon chats. Soon, the bench attracted other neighbors. One day, someone called out from the sidewalk, “What do you do on that bench?” Quick-thinking Donna shouted back, “It’s our ‘Thinking Bench’! We think about important things happening in our lives.” Then, the name gradually evolved — after one neighbor sat alone deep in thought, he declared it a “Decision-Making Bench”; another time, when Donna was caught napping, she insisted she was “meditating (冥想)”, adding yet another name. Last fall, with the temperature falling, our outdoor days come to an end. We were faced with one dilemma — what to do about it in the winter? Well, we sat down and thought and meditated and decided to put it in Donna’s garage for the winter. When I glimpsed it a few times over the next months, the bench sat lonely, holding empty flower pots, and some flat, old boxes. But now after a long winter, spring flowers are ready to bloom in the warm sunshine, and we neighbours are ready to welcome “The Bench” back into our lives. 4. Donna decided to replace the chair and bucket to ________. A. lighten the carrying load B. attract more neighbours C. get better seating for conversations D. adapt to warmer weather 5. How did the bench get its various names? A. From items placed on it. B. From seasonal discussions. C. From Donna’s creative ideas. D. From users’ activities on it. 6. Why are pots and boxes mentioned in the last paragraph? A. To suggest the flowers would soon be planted. B. To describe the bench’s practical use in winter. C. To show the bench was not serving its purpose. D. To explain why the bench needed winter storage. 7. What does “The Bench” represent by the end of the story? A. A symbol of community bonds. B. A marker of individual free time. C. A reminder of the past summer. D. A memory of a valued online order. C 5. D 6. C 7. 根据第二段中“However, over the next few days, it turned out that we needed more than a chair and a bucket which were not quite comfortable. 唐娜决定我们需要一张长椅)”以及第二段末句“What’s more, it was ideal for two 70-somethings to carry on late afternoon chats.(此外,这张长椅非常适合两个七十多岁的人在傍晚继续聊天)”可知,换掉座椅是为了获得更舒适的、适合聊天的座位。 根据第三段内容“Soon, the bench attracted other neighbors. One day, someone called out from the sidewalk, “What do you do on that bench?” Quick-thinking Donna shouted back, “It’s our ‘Thinking Bench’! We think about important things happening in our lives.” Then, the name gradually evolved—after one neighbor sat alone deep in thought, he declared it a “Decision-Making Bench”; another time, when Donna was caught napping, she insisted she was “meditating”, adding yet another name.(很快,这张长椅吸引了其他邻居。 根据末段首句“When I glimpsed it a few times over the next months, the bench sat lonely, holding empty flower pots, and some flat, old boxes.(在接下来的几个月里,我几次瞥见这张长椅,它孤零零地待在那里,上面放着空花盆和一些扁平的旧箱子)”可知,长椅冬日里沦为摆放杂物的工具,不再发挥其原本的作用。 根据首段“Last spring, my neighbor Donna and I, both in our seventies, spent several hours in the glorious sunshine enjoying the new season. When it was time to sit down and relax, Donna pulled out her red metal chair from her garage, and I sat on an overturned plastic bucket. It was fun to catch up on the news that we had missed during the long winter indoors.(去年春天,我和邻居唐娜都已年过七旬,我们在明媚的阳光下待了好几个小时,惬意迎接这崭新的季节。 One day, someone called out from the sidewalk, “What do you do on that bench?” Quick-thinking Donna shouted back, “It’s our ‘Thinking Bench’! We think about important things happening in our lives.” Then, the name gradually evolved—after one neighbor sat alone deep in thought, he declared it a “Decision-Making Bench”; another time, when Donna was caught napping, she insisted she was “meditating”, adding yet another name.(很快,这张长椅吸引了其他邻居。 A。 C In the first half of the twentieth century, Karl von Frisch, a scientist who studied animal behavior, changed our impression of honey bees by discovering the “waggle (摇摆) dance”, which may not be considered as a language, but a form of communication. It was one of our first understandings that bees do something like what we call “thinking”. Clint Perry, a scientist at Queen Mary University of London, has spent much time studying how bees think. He gave bees a choice between landing on a place above a black bar (横木) or a place below it. If they landed above the bar, they would find a delicious sugary drink. If they chose the place below the black bar, they found a terrible drink. He made the test harder or easier by moving the landing places farther from or closer to the black bar. But bees also had the choice of avoiding the task if they weren’t sure they would succeed. Perry found that bees avoided the test when it was difficult and gave it a try when it was easy. Perry pointed out that we can’t know for sure from tests like this whether bees are actually judging by their own knowledge or simply quitting the task because of an unhappy connection with the terrible drink. Scientists still do not know how bees manage to do so much with their tiny brains. No one is suggesting that bees are as smart as humans, at least not when it comes to things like memory and language. But learning more about how bees’ brains work could help us learn more about how our own brains deal with information. We may also have to rethink how we view the rest of the insect world. There are a lot of small creatures (生物) flying around in the garden. Who knows what those tiny minds might be able to do? 8. Why does the author mention Karl von Frisch in the first paragraph? A. To introduce a famous scientist. B. To change the impression of bees. C. To show early study of bees’ thinking. D. To stress the importance of bees’ study. 9. How did Clint Perry make the task difficult? A. By setting more choices. B. By giving challenging orders. C. By making landing places farther. D. By reducing the sweet level of the drinks. 10. What is Clint Perry’s attitude to the result of the research? A. Supportive. B. Unconcerned. C. Doubtful. D. Uncertain. 11. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. Insects’ thinking ability will improve. B. The number of small insects will increase. C. Study on insects’ brains has a long way to go. D. Insects’ life habits will be a focus of research. C 9. C 10. D 11. 根据第一段“In the first half of the twentieth century, Karl von Frisch, a scientist who studied animal behavior, changed our impression of honey bees by discovering the “waggle (摇摆) dance”, which may not be considered as a language, but a form of communication. It was one of our first understandings that bees do something like what we call “thinking”.(在二十世纪的前半段,研究动物行为的科学家卡尔·冯·弗里希通过发现“摇摆舞”改变了人们对蜜蜂的印象。 根据第二段“He made the test harder or easier by moving the landing places farther from or closer to the black bar.(他把着陆点移得离黑条更远或更近,从而使测试变得更困难或更容易)”可知,Clint Perry通过把着陆点设置得更远来加大任务难度。 根据第三段“Perry pointed out that we can’t know for sure from tests like this whether bees are actually judging by their own knowledge or simply quitting the task because of an unhappy connection with the terrible drink.(佩里指出,通过这类测试我们无法确切得知蜜蜂究竟是凭借自身的知识来进行判断,还是仅仅因为与那杯难喝的饮料产生了不愉快的关联而放弃了任务)”可知,Clint Perry对于这个实验的结果不是十分确定。 根据最后一段“We may also have to rethink how we view the rest of the insect world. There are a lot of small creatures (生物) flying around in the garden. Who knows what those tiny minds might be able to do?(我们或许还得重新审视我们对昆虫世界的整体看法。 C。 D If you thought that your children’s academic (学业的) performance is based simply on the number of hours spent on studying, you are wrong. Good grades are a result of various factors, including everything from the children’s brains to the environment they are in. And one of the major influencing factors, which is paid little attention to, is physical health. Physical activity and health actually can improve a person’s ability to learn. According to the National Academy of Medicine, exercise can improve a child’s cognitive (认知的) abilities, health, and academic performance significantly. According to a study by the University of British Columbia, regular aerobic exercise betters the functioning of the hippocampus (海马), the area of the brain involved in learning and memory. Other forms of exercise like balance exercises, muscle exercises, and resistance training do not have the same result on the brain. The effect of exercise on memory and thinking is both direct and indirect. Directly, regular exercise gives the ability to increase the release of growth factors. These growth factors are chemicals in the brain that affect the growth of new blood vessels, the health of brain cells, as well as the survival of new brain cells. On the other hand, getting enough exercise will improve sleep quality and mood. It will also reduce stress and anxiety. It is believed that the benefits of exercise during the school day are greater than those coming from increasing class time. Furthermore, the greatest cognitive benefits from physical education have been seen to come about when physical education was given either in the first half of the day or midday rather than at the end of the day. In order to get the children moving, rest time, PE classes, biking or walking to school should be promoted. Activities like after-school sports that used to be held at school should be restarted. Physical activity should not be seen as a dispensable option but as an important educational concern. 12. What factor is often forgotten when it comes to good grades? A. The children’s brains. B. Physical health. C. A good environment. D. The hours spent on learning. 13. How does exercise influence thinking indirectly? A. By affecting the survival of new brain cells. B. By releasing growth factors in large numbers. C. By influencing the growth of new blood vessels. D. By improving a person’s mood and sleep quality. 14. What does the underlined word “dispensable” mean in the last paragraph? A. Unnecessary. B. Practical. C. Unusual. D. Common. 15. What is the best title for this passage? A. Focus on Mental Health B. PE Classes Are a Good Choice C. Exercise May Lead to Better Grades D. Different Exercises, Different Brain Effects 【答案】12. B 13. D 14. A 15. 根据第一段中的“And one of the major influencing factors, which is paid little attention to, is physical health.(而其中一个很少被关注的主要影响因素,就是身体健康。)” 根据第三段中的“On the other hand, getting enough exercise will improve sleep quality and mood. It will also reduce stress and anxiety.(另一方面,进行足够的锻炼会改善睡眠质量和情绪。 根据最后一段中的“Physical activity should not be seen as a dispensable option but as an important educational concern.(体育活动不应被视为一种dispensable的选择,而应被视为一项重要的教育事务。)”由“not...but...” If you are like most international students, you are probably pretty comfortable reading and writing in English. ____16____ Below are some tips to help you to improve your conversational skills. Finally, this becomes a good habit. Many people have asked me how I learned to speak English fluently, and I owe most of it to my years of being a math teacher in college. A选项“If possible, become a “teacher” at your school. I had always considered myself a good student. C In the first half of the twentieth century, Karl von Frisch, a scientist who studied animal behavior, changed our impression of honey bees by discovering the “waggle (摇摆) dance”, which may not be considered as a language, but a form of communication. D If you thought that your children’s academic (学业的) performance is based simply on the number of hours spent on studying, you are wrong. B.
