Last spring, my neighbor Donna and I, both in our seventies, spent several hours in the glorious sunshine enjoying the new season. When it was time to sit down and relax, Donna pulled out her red metal chair from her garage, and I sat on an overturned plastic bucket (桶). It was fun to catch up on the news that we had missed during the long winter indoors.
However, over the next few days, it turned out that we needed more than a chair and a bucket which were not quite comfortable. Donna decided we needed a bench (长椅). After giving up unsuitable choices from local stores, she found a perfect one online. The next day it arrived. Excitedly, she opened the box and started putting it together. We proudly high-fived each other as the pieces joined up and the bench started to look like one. After a few minutes’ help from a neighbour, it was complete. What’s more, it was the perfect fit for two 70-somethings to carry on late afternoon chats.
Soon, the bench attracted other neighbors. One day, someone called out from the sidewalk, “What do you do on that bench?” Quick-thinking Donna called back, “It’s our ‘Thinking Bench’! We think about important things happening in our lives.” Then, the name gradually evolved — after one neighbor sat alone deep in thought, he named it a “Decision-Making Bench”; another time, when Donna was caught napping, she insisted she was “meditating (冥想)”, adding yet another name.
Last fall, with the temperature falling, we came to the end of sitting outdoors. We were faced with one problem — what to do about it in the winter? Well, we sat down and thought and meditated and decided to put it in Donna’s garage for the winter.
When I glimpsed it a few times over the next months, the bench sat lonely, holding empty flower pots, and some flat, old boxes. But now after a long winter, spring flowers are ready to bloom in the warm sunshine, and we neighbours are ready to welcome “The Bench” back into our lives.
24. Why did Donna decide to replace the chair and bucket?
A. To lighten the carrying load. B. To get comfortable seating for chats.
C. To attract more neighbours. D. To get used to warmer weather.
25. How did the bench get its different names?
A. From things placed on it. B. From seasonal discussions.
C. From Donna’s creative ideas. D. From users’ activities on it.
26. Why are pots and boxes mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To show the bench was not serving its purpose.
B. To suggest the flowers would soon be planted.
C. To describe the bench’s practical use in winter.
D. To explain why the bench needed winter storage.
27. What does “The Bench” represent by the story’s end?
A. A reminder of the past summer.
B. A solution to the aging problem.
C. A symbol of community connections.
D. A memory of a valued online order.
C
In the first half of the twentieth century, Karl von Frisch, a scientist who studied how animals behaved, changed our impression of honey bees by discovering the “waggle (摇摆) dance”, which may not be considered as a language, but a form of communication. It was one of our first understandings that bees do something like what we call “thinking”.
Clint Perry, a scientist at Queen Mary University of London, has spent much time studying how bees think. He gave bees a choice between landing on a place above a black bar (横木) or a place below it. If they landed above the bar, they would find a delicious sugary drink. If they chose the place below the black bar, they found a terrible drink. He made the test harder or easier by moving the landing places farther from or closer to the black bar. But bees also had the choice of avoiding the task if they weren’t sure they would succeed. Perry found that bees avoided the test when it was difficult and gave it a try when it was easy.
Perry pointed out that we can’t know for sure from tests like this whether bees are actually judging by their own knowledge or simply quitting the task because of an unhappy connection with the terrible drink.
Scientists still do not know how bees manage to do so much with their tiny brains. No one is suggesting that bees are as smart as humans, at least not when it comes to things like memory and language. But learning more about how bees’ brains work could help us learn more about how our own brains deal with information.
We may also have to rethink how we view the rest of the insect world. There are a lot of small creatures (生物) flying around in the garden. Who knows what those tiny minds might be able to do?
28. Why does the author mention Karl von Frisch in the first paragraph?
A. To introduce a famous scientist.
B. To show early study of bees’ thinking.
C. To change the impression of bees.
D. To stress the importance of bees’ study.
29. How did Clint Perry make the task more difficult?
A. By setting more choices.
B. By giving challenging orders.
C. By making landing places farther.
D. By reducing the sweet level of the drinks.
30. What is Clint Perry’s attitude to the result of the research?
A. Supportive. B. Indifferent. C. Doubtful. D. Uncertain.
31. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Insects’ thinking ability will improve.
B. The number of small insects will increase.
C. Study on insects’ brains has a long way to go.
D. Insects’ life habits will be a focus of research.
D
If you thought that your children’s academic (学业的) performance is based simply on the number of hours spent on studying, you are wrong. Good grades are a result of various factors, including everything from the children’s brains to the environment they are in. And one of the major influencing factors, which is paid little attention to, is physical health. Physical activity and health actually can improve a person’s ability to learn. According to the National Academy of Medicine, exercise can improve a child’s cognitive (认知的) abilities, health, and academic performance significantly.
According to a study by the University of British Columbia, regular aerobic exercise betters the functioning of the hippocampus (海马), the area of the brain involved in learning and memory. Other forms of exercise like balance exercises, muscle exercises, and resistance training do not have the same result on the brain.
The effect of exercise on memory and thinking is both direct and indirect. Directly, regular exercise gives the ability to increase the release of growth factors. These growth factors are chemicals in the brain that affect the growth of new blood vessels, the health of brain cells, as well as the survival of new brain cells. On the other hand, getting enough exercise will improve sleep quality and mood. It will also reduce stress and anxiety.
It is believed that the benefits of exercise during the school day are greater than those coming from increasing class time. Furthermore, the greatest cognitive benefits from physical education have been seen to come about when physical education was given either in the first half of the day or midday rather than at the end of the day.
In order to get the children moving, rest time, PE classes, biking or walking to school should be promoted. Activities like after-school sports that used to be held at school should be restarted. Physical activity should not be seen as a dispensable option but as an important educational concern.
32. What factor is often forgotten when it comes to good grades?
A. The children’s brains. B. Physical health.
C. A good environment. D. The hours spent on learning.
33. How does exercise influence thinking indirectly?
A. By affecting the survival of new brain cells.
B. By releasing growth factors in large numbers.
C. By influencing the growth of new blood vessels.
D. By improving a person’s mood and sleep quality.
34. What does the underlined word “dispensable” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Unnecessary. B. Practical. C. Unusual. D. Common.
35. What is the best title for this passage?
A. Focus on Mental Health B. PE Classes Are a Good Choice
C. Exercise May Lead to Better Grades D. Different Exercises, Different Brain Effects

If you are like most international students, you are probably pretty comfortable reading and writing in English. 36 Below are some tips to help you to improve your conversational skills.
Make friends with American students. Many international students end up making friends with only other international students instead of native speakers. 37 In fact, hanging out with natives not only naturally pushes you to improve your spoken English, but also helps you pick up cultural and social information.
Learn from American friends. Tell your American friends that you are trying to improve your listening and speaking skills, and would like them to help you. If you pronounce a word incorrectly, or misuse an idiom, you ask them to guide you. 38
Increase your knowledge. 39 If you have been exposed to topics that are likely to be discussed in conversation, you have a much better chance of understanding people when they talk, and of being able to express yourself well.
40 If you have to explain something to someone, you are eager to pronounce everything as well as you can to explain yourself. Finally, this becomes a good habit. Many people have asked me how I learned to speak English fluently, and I owe most of it to my years of being a math teacher in college for years.
A. If possible, become a “teacher” at your school.
B. Explaining everything in a different way counts.
C. You are likely to make great progress in this way.
D. It’s a win-win opportunity for international students.
E. It has a bad influence on improving your spoken English.
F. Keep up with the latest news and watch popular shows and movies.
G. You may have trouble in listening and speaking in the language, however.
