A
In the deep ocean, sunlight cannot reach. It is dark all year round, and the water is also very cold. Yet this dark world is full of life. In recent years, scientists have found more than 1,100 new species (物种) in the ocean, and many of them have one surprising thing in common: they can produce light.
This ability is called bioluminescence It happens when a living thing mixes two special chemicals in its body. The result is a soft light, usually blue or green. Unlike a lamp, it gives out almost no heat, so it is often called "cold light."
Why do deep-sea animals glow? The reasons are different. Some use light to find food. A fish may hang a bright "fishing rod" in front of its mouth, and smaller fish are drawn to the light. Others use light to protect themselves. When a hunter comes near, they suddenly flash, and the hunter is frightened away.
Some animals use light to call for help. When a small shrimp (虾) is caught, it gives out a bright cloud of light at once. The attacker becomes easy to see — and may then be eaten by a bigger animal. In this way, the little shrimp is saved.
Scientists are still studying this amazing ability. They hope that one day it can be used in medicine. For example, a special light from a deep-sea animal might help doctors find cancer cells (癌细胞) more clearly. The deep ocean still keeps many secrets, and each one may teach us something useful.
6. What do we know about the deep ocean?
A. It is bright all year round.
B. It is warm and crowded.
C. It is dark but full of life.
D. It has no food at all.
7. What is bioluminescence?
A. Light produced by living things.
B. A kind of light from lamps.
C. A chemical that kills enemies.
D. A way to keep the body warm.
8. Why is the light called "cold light"?
A. Because it is blue or green.
B. Because it gives out little heat.
C. Because it appears only in winter.
D. Because it is made by cold water.
9. How does the small shrimp protect itself?
A. By hiding in the sand.
B. By changing its color.
C. By swimming away quickly.
D. By giving out light to call for help.
10. What might the light be used for in the future?
A. To catch more fish.
B. To make brighter lamps.
C. To help doctors find cancer cells.
D. To warm the cold ocean.
6. C。 由第一段“It is dark all year round...Yet this dark world is full of life.”
7. A。 由第二段“This ability is called bioluminescence. It happens when a living thing mixes two special chemicals...”
8. B。 由第二段“it gives out almost no heat, so it is often called ‘cold light’.”
9. D。 由第四段“When a small shrimp is caught, it gives out a bright cloud of light at once... In this way, the little shrimp is saved.”
10. C。 由末段“a special light from a deep-sea animal might help doctors find cancer cells more clearly.”
B
For the past three years, Lin Yue has spent every Saturday morning in a small room behind the city library. There, with simple tools — scissors, glue and a soft brush — she repairs old and broken books. She calls herself a "book doctor."
Lin Yue did not plan to become one. She studied computer science at university and once worked in a big company. But during a visit to the library, she saw a pile of damaged books waiting to be thrown away. "I felt it was a pity," she says. "Those books had travelled through so many hands." So she decided to learn book repair by herself, watching videos and asking old librarians for advice.
At first, it was not easy. The paper of old books is often yellow and easy to tear, and the glue must be chosen with great care. Once, she spent a whole afternoon on a single page. "You need patience," she says with a smile. "Getting angry only makes things worse."
So far, Lin Yue has repaired more than 800 books. Some of them were over a hundred years old. She never asks the library for any money. When people want to know why, she answers simply, "The books don't belong to me. I'm just giving them a second life."
Now she is passing on her skill. Twice a month, she gives free lessons at the library, and many teenagers have joined her. "I hope more people will love books and learn to take care of them," she says. "A repaired book is like a repaired friendship — it becomes more precious."
11. What does the underlined word "tear" probably mean?
A. turn yellow
B. become hard
C. break apart
D. grow bigger
12. Why did Lin Yue decide to repair books?
A. Because she needed money.
B. Because she felt sorry to see books thrown away.
C. Because the library asked her to do so.
D. Because her old job was boring.
13. Which of the following is NOT a difficulty for Lin Yue?
A. The old paper was easy to break.
B. Choosing the right glue was difficult.
C. She had to be very patient.
D. The library paid her too little.
14. What can we infer about Lin Yue?
A. She hopes to make money from her skill.
B. She has given up teaching teenagers.
C. She cares more about books than about money.
D. She learned book repair at university.
15. Which of the following best shows Lin Yue’s character?
A. She teaches others to repair books for free.
B. She studied computer science at university.
C. She once worked in a big company.
D. She watched videos to learn new skills.
由第二段“she saw a pile of damaged books waiting to be thrown away. ‘I felt it was a pity...’”
由第四段“She never asks the library for any money.”
15. A。 由末段“she gives free lessons...many teenagers have joined her”可知免费传授技艺最能体现其无私品格,故选A。
Everyone knows that learning needs focus. But these days, it seems harder than ever. With a phone always at hand and endless short videos calling for attention, many students find it hard to sit down and study for even half an hour. (16) ______
The good news is that focus is a skill, and like any skill, it can be trained. Here are a few simple ways to help you.
First, start small. (17) ______ If you plan to study for three hours on your first try, you will probably give up before the first hour ends. A better way is to begin with 25 minutes of work and a short 5-minute rest, and then slowly make the working time longer.
Second, put your phone out of reach. (18) ______ Studies show that even a silent phone on the desk can pull your attention away. So put it in another room, or ask someone to keep it for you while you study.
Third, choose the right place. A quiet corner of a library usually works better than a noisy living room with a TV on. (19) ______ The fewer things around you, the easier it is to focus.
Finally, be patient with yourself. Everyone loses focus sometimes, and that is quite normal. (20) ______ When your mind wanders, do not get angry — just take a breath and bring it back. Little by little, you will find that you can study longer and better.
A. It doesn’t mean you are weak or lazy.
B. So how can you win the fight for attention?
C. It may sound strict, but it really helps.
D. Keep your desk clean and tidy.
E. This means you should not expect too much at the beginning.
16. B。承上启下:上文陈述“难以专注”的问题,下文“The good news is...”

Dear Chris,
How is everything going? I’d like to share a meaningful experience with you.
Last Saturday, I took part in a volunteer activity in my community from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. My job was to help the elderly learn to use smartphones. At first, some of them were afraid of making mistakes, so I taught them step by step with great patience. Between the lessons, I also chatted with them and listened to their stories.
Seeing the smiles on their faces, I felt a strong sense of achievement. I learned that a little help and company can really warm a person’s heart. Volunteering is a wonderful way to help others and grow myself.
Do you have any similar experiences? I’m looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

Dear Chris,
How is everything going? I’d like to share with you a meaningful experience last Saturday.
From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., I worked as a volunteer in my community. My job was to teach the elderly how to use smartphones — how to make a video call, send a message and pay online. When they finally saw their grandchildren’s faces on the screen, their smiles made my day. In the afternoon, I just sat with them, listening to their stories.
I learned that what they need most is not a phone, but someone to talk to. Helping others really brings me more joy than I expected.
Yours,
Li Hua
Dear Chris,
I’m writing to share something that has stayed with me since last Saturday — a day I spent as a volunteer in my community.
From nine in the morning until four in the afternoon, I was busy teaching elderly neighbours to use smartphones. What impressed me most was how excited they were when a grandchild’s face finally appeared on the screen. In the afternoon, we simply sat together and talked, and I found myself listening far more than speaking.
That day taught me what no textbook could: what the elderly need most is not a device but company. Giving my time, I received far more in return.
Yours,
Li Hua

9. How does the small shrimp protect itself?
A. By hiding in the sand.
B. By changing its color.
C. By swimming away quickly.
D. By giving out light to call for help.
10. What might the light be used for in the future?
A. To catch more fish.
