From their doorstep in Altadena, California, Colleen and Jason Warnesky watched in 2009 as the Station Fire swept through the Angeles National Forest, flames bright against the distant mountains. Eleven years later, standing on the same spot, they witnessed the Bobcat Fire, one of the largest wildfires in Los Angeles County’s history. Both times, their home survived.
So when the Eaton Fire broke out just three miles away in January 2025, the couple felt certain their house would be safe once again. “We couldn’t imagine how the fire would even reach us,” Colleen recalled. But this time, their luck ran out. Their 1,400-square-foot home was burned to the ground. There they were, pacing around the fenced empty lot where their home once stood, waiting for building permits to finally start reconstruction.
After getting tired of the seemingly endless waiting, the Warneskys made a key decision: they would rebuild not with traditional materials, but with innovative prefabricated housing They have joined a growing number of local families choosing this type of home through a program developed by city-LAB at UCLA. The program offers fire-resistant prefab designs tailored for wildfire-prone areas, and guides homeowners through financing and practical rebuilding solutions.
For the Warneskys, safety comes first. Their planned new home, built with glass, steel and concrete, is specially designed for regions near wildland vegetation (植被). Jason shared bittersweet memories of their old home, a simple post-war house with a beloved redwood platform. “I suspect that platform was one of the first things to catch fire,” he said. “We won’t make that mistake again.”
The wildfires reshaping the Warneskys’ neighborhood are part of a larger trend across the nation. As climate change fuels more frequent and severe natural disasters, more families are turning to smarter housing options. Prefabricated homes, built in novel ways to withstand extreme conditions, promise peace of mind — and for families like the Warneskys, a fresh start amid the ashes.
44. What can we learn about the Warneskys’ home?
A. It had been rebuilt for three times.
B. It was built with fire-resistant materials.
C. It was ruined in the third serious wildfire.
D. It was specially designed to watch wildfires.
45. Jason Warnesky mentions the redwood platform in paragraph 4 to ______.
A. highlight their priority on safety
B. criticize unsafe material choices
C. recall meaningful past moments
D. compare old and new housing styles
46. What is the emotional impact of the incident on the local families?
A. It helps them stay strong and encourages innovation.
B. It motivates better connection with their community.
C. It gives them greater understanding of the climate change.
D. It triggers reflection on their previous homebuilding methods.
47. What might be the best title for the passage?
A. Climate Change Draws Communities Apart
B. Prefab Houses Rebuild Hope in Fire-stricken Areas
C. Charity Program Helps Fire Victims Rebuild Homes
D. Smarter Housing Puts an End to Traditional Construction
C 45. A 46. A 47. B
根据第一段中“From their doorstep in Altadena, California, Colleen and Jason Warnesky watched in 2009 as the Station Fire swept through the Angeles National Forest, flames bright against the distant mountains. Eleven years later, standing on the same spot, they witnessed the Bobcat Fire, one of the largest wildfires in Los Angeles County’s history. Both times, their home survived.(2009年,家住加利福尼亚州阿尔塔迪纳的科琳·沃内斯基和杰森·沃内斯基站在自家门阶上,目睹了 Station Fire山火席卷安吉利斯国家森林,火焰在远山的映衬下格外明亮。十一年后,在同一个地方,他们又亲眼见证了洛杉矶县历史上最大的山火之一—— Bobcat Fire。这两次火灾,他们的家都幸免于难)”和第二段中“So when the Eaton Fire broke out just three miles away in January 2025, the couple felt certain their house would be safe once again....But this time, their luck ran out. Their 1,400-square-foot home was burned to the ground. (因此,当2025年1月伊顿大火在三英里外爆发时,这对夫妇确信他们的房子会再次安全。……但这一次,他们的运气用完了。他们1400平方英尺的家被烧成了平地)”可知,他们的家在第三次严重的山火中被毁。
【45题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“Jason shared bittersweet memories of their old home, a simple post-war house with a beloved redwood platform. “I suspect that platform was one of the first things to catch fire,” he said. “We won’t make that mistake again.” (Jason分享了对旧居苦乐参半的回忆——那是一座简朴的战后房屋,带有一个他们钟爱的红木平台。“我怀疑那个平台是最先着火的东西之一,”他说。“我们不会再犯同样的错误了。”)”可知,Jason提到红木平台是为了说明他们从中吸取了教训,强调了他们对安全的优先考虑。
【46题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“After getting tired of the seemingly endless waiting, the Warneskys made a key decision: they would rebuild not with traditional materials, but with innovative prefabricated housing (预制装配式房屋). (在对看似无尽的等待感到厌倦之后,Warnesky一家做出了一个关键决定:他们不再使用传统材料重建,而是选择创新的预制装配式房屋)”和最后一段中“As climate change fuels more frequent and severe natural disasters, more families are turning to smarter housing options. Prefabricated homes, built in novel ways to withstand extreme conditions, promise peace of mind — and for families like the Warneskys, a fresh start amid the ashes. (随着气候变化导致更频繁、更严重的自然灾害,越来越多的家庭正转向更智能的住房选择。预制房屋采用新颖的建造方式,能够抵御极端环境,为人们带来安心——对于像沃内斯基一家这样的家庭来说,这更是灰烬之中的新起点)”可知,野火灾难并没有击垮这些家庭,反而促使他们变得更加坚强,主动寻求创新的住房方案,在废墟中重新开始。
【47题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,第一、二段讲述了Warnesky夫妇的家在经历两次山火幸存后,最终在第三次山火中被毁;结合第三段中“After getting tired of the seemingly endless waiting, the Warneskys made a key decision: they would rebuild not with traditional materials, but with innovative prefabricated housing (预制装配式房屋). They have joined a growing number of local families choosing this type of home through a program developed by city-LAB at UCLA. (在对看似无尽的等待感到厌倦之后,Warnesky一家做出了一个关键决定:他们不再使用传统材料重建,而是选择创新的预制装配式房屋。通过加州大学洛杉矶分校城市实验室开发的一个项目,他们已经加入了当地越来越多选择这种房屋的家庭行列)”、最后一段中“As climate change fuels more frequent and severe natural disasters, more families are turning to smarter housing options. (随着气候变化导致自然灾害更加频繁和严重,越来越多的家庭正在转向更智能的住房选择。)”和“for families like the Warneskys, a fresh start amid the ashes (对于像Warnesky这样的家庭来说,这是在灰烬中重新开始)”可推知。
C
It's rare that you see the words "shyness" and "leader" in the same sentence. After all, the common viewpoint is that those outgoing and sociable guys make great public speakers and excellent net-workers and that those shy people are not. A survey conducted by USA Today referred to 65 percent of executives who believed shyness to be a barrier to leadership. Interestingly, the same article stresses that roughly 40 percent of leaders actually are quite shy—they're just better at adapting themselves to situational demands. Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and Charles Schwab are just a few "innies".
Unlike their outgoing counterparts who are more sensitive to rewards and risk-taking, shy people take a cautious approach to chance. Rather than the flashy chit-chat that defines social gathering, shy people listen attentively to what others say and absorb it before they speak. They're not thinking about what to say while the other person is still talking, but rather listening so they can learn what to say. Along the same lines, shy people share a common love of learning. They are intrinsically(内在地) motivated and therefore seek content regardless of achieving an outside standard.
Being shy can also bring other benefits. Remember being in school and hearing the same kids contribute, until shy little Johnny, who almost never said a word, cut in? Then what happened? Everyone turned around to look with great respect at little Johnny actually talking. This is how shy people made good use of their power of presence: they "own" the moment by speaking calmly and purposefully, which translate to a positive image.
Shyness is often related to modesty. Not to say that limelight-seekers aren't modest, but shy people tend to have an accurate sense of their abilities and achievements. As a result, they are able to acknowledge mistakes, imperfections, knowledge gaps and limitations.
Since shy people have a lower sensitivity to outside rewards than outgoing ones, they're more comfortable working with little information and sticking to their inner desires. Shy people are also more likely to insist on finding solutions that aren't primarily apparent. Don't believe me? Maybe you'll believe Albert Einstein, who once said, "It's not that I'm so smart, it's that I stay with problems longer." Obviously, finding certainty where uncertainty is typically popular is a huge plus for any successful person.
The myth that shy people are less effective leaders than their outgoing fellows is just a misunderstanding. Make wise use of your personality strengths to lead your business no matter what side of the range you fall on.
48. We can learn from Paragraph 2 that ___________.
A. shy people are sensitive to rewards
B. shy people care more about content
C. outgoing people are more careful about chances
D. outgoing people consider what to learn while listening
49. The example of Johnny shows ____________.
A. shy people are likely to be modest
B. hardworking students speak little in public
C. some students keep silent on purpose at school
D. shy people may have an advantage in discussion
50. We can learn from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 5 that ____________.
A. success results from devotion B. shyness contributes to popularity
C. outside reward leads to insistence D. uncertainty counts more than certainty
51. The author supports his ideas mainly by ____________.
A. giving definitions and presenting research results
B. explaining problems and providing solutions
C. quoting authorities and making evaluations
D. making contrasts and giving examples
B 49. D 50. A 51. D

根据第二段“Rather than the flashy chit-chat that defines social gathering, shy people listen attentively to what others say and absorb it before they speak. They're not thinking about what to say while the other person is still talking, but rather listening so they can learn what to say.(害羞的人不像社交聚会那样浮华地闲聊,而是认真倾听别人说什么,并在他们开口之前就消化了。 当对方还在说话的时候,他们不会考虑说什么,而是倾听,这样他们就能学会说什么。) ”可知害羞的人很认真地听其他人所说的内容并消化吸收。他们认真地听是因为他们可以从别人所说的话中学到很多。这些都说明害羞的人实际上非常在意别人说话的内容。故选B项。
【49题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段最后一句“This is how shy people made good use of their power of presence:they "own" the moment by speaking calmly and purposefully, which translate to a positive image. (这就是害羞的人如何很好地利用他们的风度的力量:他们冷静而有目的性地说话,“拥有”这一刻,这转化为积极的形象。)”可知很害羞不愿意表达自己观点的Johnny一直都没有说话,但他突然插话,所有人都转身听他陈述观点,他镇定地陈述了自己的思想。这个例子说明因为害羞的人平时很少说话,但是一旦发表观点了,别人就很在意。在讨论中往往会有一点优势,故选D项。
【50题详解】
推理判断题。根据前句“Shy people are also more likely to insist on finding solutions that aren't primarily apparent. (害羞的人更可能坚持找到并不是很明显的问题的解决方法。)”这说明害羞的人很专注于自己的问题。故选A项。

In these times of worldwide communications, science is no different from other professions in that English is now the established “universal” language. Like it or not, most scientific reports are published in English, although some countries also have journals that are published in their native languages. But how did English develop into the dominant language of scientific discourse (会话)? Was it a joint decision or did it happen progressively and “accidentally”? And was it a positive move for all?
Arabic was used in all countries with an Islamic culture in the middle ages, while in Europe Latin was used for communication in science and education until the 17th century. During the Enlightenment, Latin lost favour as it was thought to be too complicated. Instead, scientific communication became more “provincial”; German, French, Italian and English were used in their respective countries and colonies, with different languages being more important in different disciplines — German, for instance, was widely used in physics, chemistry and some aspects of medicine and psychology. The relative use of these languages changed through history, reflecting the relative growth and decline of science, culture and economics in these countries. Thus, the use of French predominated in the 18th century, whereas German was most widespread in the 19th and English dominated the 20th. Social upheaval (剧变) also played a role — the use of French declined dramatically after World War I, whereas that of German increased in parallel until World War II. After World War II, and especially in the past 30 years, English progressively established itself as the primary language for scientific communication as America came to dominate both basic research and technology. In the 1920s the need for a universal language of science was debated, and a synthetic language, Esperanto, was developed but never widely used.
Despite the obvious appeal of having a common language that allows scientists around the world to communicate with one another, there can indeed be some drawbacks in using English for all communication — non-native English speakers can be at a disadvantage compared with native speakers when it comes to expressing and highlighting the interest of their papers and communicating with editors and referees. Careful copy editing can tackle the problem of accessibility of accepted manuscripts, but upstream of this stage it is down to all parties to ensure that they evaluate work on its scientific merit rather than its proper use of grammar.
The use of a universal language for communication in science is unavoidable as one obvious advantage is that findings can be more widely accessed, and resisting this concept for the sake of cultural difference would seem to be anything but productive. However, the use of national language and less technical language is useful in communicating science to the general public, as is the case with the Nature gateways in Japanese, Chinese, Korean and German.
52. Which of the following does NOT contribute to the changes of languages in science through history?
A. Scientific development. B. Cultural influence.
C. Economic climate. D. Social communication.
53. The downside of using English for all scientific communication involves .
A. some scientific work being undervalued due to its improper use of grammar
B. acknowledged manuscripts sometimes not being accessed with enough care
C. editors and referees’ failure to communicate with the authors of the papers
D. non-native English speakers being unable to express what interests them well
54. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Creating a universal language in scientific communication is inevitable.
B. A universal language enables more people to read about scientific findings.
C. Cultural difference adds to the difficulty in increasing scientific productivity.
D. Ordinary people also benefit from the use of technical language in science.
55. Which of the following is the most suitable title for this passage?
A. Universal Language Established B. Universal Language of Science
C. Breaking the Language Barrier D. Breaking the Language Dominance
D 53. A 54. C 55. C

Muzak
The next time you go into a bank, a store, or a supermarket, stop and listen. What do you hear? ____56____. It's similar to the music you listen to, but it's not exactly the same. That's because this music was especially designed to relax you, or to give you extra energy. Sometimes you don't even realize the music is playing, but you react to the music anyway.
Quiet background music used to be called "elevator (电梯) music" because we often heard it in elevators. But lately we hear it in more and more places, and it has a new name "Muzak". About one-third of the people in America listen to "Muzak" every day. The music plays for 15 minutes at a time, with short pauses in between. It is always more lively between ten and eleven in the morning, and between three and four in the afternoon, when people are more tired. ____57____.
If you listen to Muzak carefully, you will probably recognize the names of many of the songs. Some musicians or songwriters don't want their songs to be used as Muzak, but others are happy when their songs are chosen. Why? ____58____.
Music is often played in public places because it is designed to make people feel less lonely when they are in an airport or a hotel. It has been proven that Muzak doeswhat it is designed to do. Tired office workers suddenly have more energy when they hear the pleasant sound of Muzak in the background. ____59____. Supermarket shoppers buy 38 percent more groceries.
___60___. They say it's boring to hear the same songs all the time. But other people enjoy hearing Muzak in public places. They say it helps them relax and feel calm. One way or another, Muzak affects everyone. Some farmers even say their cows give more milk when they hear Muzak!

D
