My Year Abroad
This month in Travellers Corner there are three teenagers’ experiences in year-abroad programmes.
Mariko Okada—Tokyo
My year abroad in the United States was a fantastic experience. I’m not a shy person, and I was very comfortable speaking to everyone. So I got lots of speaking practice. I also learned lots of interesting things about American culture. When I got home, my friends all said that I had improved so much! I hope to go back again in the future.
Carla Fonseca—Rio de Janeiro
I spent last year studying English in London. I’m from a small town, and London is a very big city. Sometimes I felt it was too big. There were so many people to talk to, but I always felt bad about my English. I missed my family, and I really missed my two cats. My roommate was always using our telephone, so I hardly had the chance for a nice long talk with my parents. I think it was a good experience for me, but I’m glad to be home!
Alvin Chen—Hong Kong
Studying in New Zealand was an interesting experience for me, but it was also lots of hard work! I had English classes six hours a day, five days a week with lots of homework. I also kept a diary of my experience. I like to write, and I wrote two or three pages in my diary every day. On Saturdays, my homestay family took me to lots of interesting places and showed me so many wonderful things about the culture. I’m really glad I went!
46. Why did the three teenagers go abroad?
A. To have a holiday. B. To visit friends.
C. To study English. D. To find a job.
47. Who didn't really enjoy the stay in a foreign country very much?
A. Carla. B. Mariko. C. Alvin. D. Carla’s roommate.
48. Travellers Corner is most probably .
A. a sports club newsletter B. a science documentary
C. a news website D. a travel magazine
B
My husband and I were once in Nepal (尼泊尔) to see sunrise over the Himalayas.
One morning we awoke to total darkness at 5 o’clock. As we rushed through a town with cameras in hand, I noticed the calm, gentle way the Nepalese people greeted the morning. One man boiled a huge pot of milk tea, and other villagers gathered around his fire, cupping their hands around small glasses of the steaming sweet mixture. It was fascinating, but not to be left behind, we joined the stream of tourists moving quickly up to the lookout point.
The top was crowded when we arrived, but after 10 minutes of cold waiting, the assembled(临时集结的) group gave up. “The cloud cover is too heavy,” one said. Then one by one they rushed down the hill to the next item on their sightseeing list. I was disappointed as well, but suddenly I noticed a small Nepalese boy absently playing with a stick and shooting quick glances at the clouds. He must know something we don’t, I thought. I decided to wait with him.
The boy and I didn’t have to wait long. Moments later, a tiny stream of golden light burned through one thick cloud, then another. Rose-colored fog warmed the backs of the clouds, and suddenly the morning sun stole a glance around the side of the mountain, miles above where I’d expected it to be.
Nothing I’d seen before prepared me for the moment the clouds moved away with their heads down, and the magnificent(壮丽的) Himalayas appeared before, around, and above me. I sat in astonishment, not breathing, not daring to look away, certain that God had placed me here at the backdoor of Earth to show me what Heaven really looks like. I certainly got the message. Never again will I rush a sunrise. I now know Nature will supply her fruits to me only when I am truly ready to receive them.
49.What does “It” in Paragraph 2 most probably imply?
A.The darkness of the town in the morning.
B.The huge pot of milk tea boiling on the fire.
C.The way the local people welcomed the day.
D.The stream of tourists rushing to the lookout point.
50.The author decided to wait with the Nepalese boy because .
A.she felt kind of having faith in him
B.the restless tourists disappointed her
C.that boy was praying to the sun with a magic stick
D.she had nothing more to see on her sightseeing list
51.Which of the following words best describe the author’s feeling when she saw the sunrise?
A.Totally shocked. B.Absolutely amazed.
C.Truly frightened. D.Extremely interested.
52.What can be concluded from the passage?
A.Do in Rome as the Romans do. B.God helps those who help themselves.
C.Time and tide wait for no man. D.Fortune rewards those having patience.

Maths is everywhere in our life, from working out the bill after dinner to your personal costs. While some people enjoy solving maths problems, many others are afraid of the moment when they have to deal with numbers and feel really anxious. It might seem discouraging, but this “maths anxiety” is quite common, and you’re far from being the only one who feels this way. Besides, our worries and fears don’t always show how able we are.
The reason for this problem often begins to appear in our childhood at school. Studies have shown that math teachers who feel nervous about teaching the subject can pass their anxiety to their students, and girls might be more affected by this anxiety. According to the Program for International Student Assessment, around 31% of 15 and 16-year-olds in 34 countries said that they felt very nervous when solving maths problems, 33% said they got nervous doing maths homework, and nearly 60% worried that maths classes would be difficult. Shulamit Kahn, from Boston University’s Questrom School of Business, told the BBC that providing students, especially girls, with good role models “is important, especially at a young age.” She believes the key is to have people, especially women who love teaching maths, educate younger kids.
David Robson, writing for BBC Future, mentioned, “It’s unclear why maths causes so much fear compared to other subjects like geography. But knowing there’s a right or wrong answer might make you more anxious about not doing well.”
And if we believe that we’re not “maths people”, we may question about ourselves and avoid solving problems that we could deal with.
Researchers have been trying to work out why mental maths can make us nervous. This fear might come from all kinds of sources, but some suggest that openly expressing your fears can weaken their control on you and encourage children to see math tests as challenges rather than threat (威胁). We need to have a positive view on maths and give it another try.
53. What’s the main idea of paragraph 2?
A.Boys are better at math than girls.
B.Maths classes are difficult for everyone.
C.Students’ anxiety only comes from teachers.
D.Math anxiety in childhood affect students’ confidence.
54. What might happen if someone believes they’re not a “maths person”?
A.They will study maths harder. B.They will doubt their abilities.
C.They will face challenges bravely. D.They won’t see maths as a threat.
55. According to the last paragraph, what are children advised to do?
A.Find the reasons of maths fear positively.
B.Give up challenges to avoid anxiety actively.
C.Speak out their fears for improvement bravely.
D.Examine the reasons for maths failure carefully.
56. What might be the best title of the passage?
A.Maths Anxiety: How to Fix It?
B.Maths Application: How to use Maths?
C.Maths Learning: The Key to Success in All Fields.
D.Maths Competition: Race between Boys and Girls.

① When it comes to teenage mental health, researchers have found that stress is no longer only a problem for adults (成年人). More middle school students are experiencing high levels of pressure in their daily lives, and this situation has drawn wide attention from parents, schools and society.
② One major cause is academic pressure. With more subjects and higher standards in Grade Eight, students often have difficulty balancing homework, revision and after-school classes. Many of them keep studying until late at night, hoping to get ideal grades in exams. However, this not only leads to poor sleep quality but also makes them easily worried and tired during the day.
③ Another important reason is the lack of proper communication. Many teenagers are unwilling to share their feelings with parents or teachers. They believe that adults cannot understand their troubles, so they keep their worries to themselves. Over time, these negative feelings will influence their mood, study, and even physical health. Some students become less confident, while others may feel lonely and helpless.
④ To solve this problem, experts suggest several practical ways. Firstly, students should learn to arrange time wisely and improve learning efficiency (效率) instead of studying for long hours without breaks. Secondly, it’s necessary to express feelings properly. Talking to trusted people can help reduce stress greatly. Thirdly, taking up hobbies and doing outdoor activities can help relax the mind and body.
⑤ Schools and parents also play important roles. Schools should organize more activities to reduce pressure, while parents should care more about their children’s mental health rather than only paying attention to grades.
⑥ In fact, stress is normal in life. The key is to face it positively and use the right ways to deal with it. Only in this way can teenagers keep healthy both in body and mind.
57.Why don’t teenagers share their troubles with adults?
A.They think adults can’t understand them.
B.They have no friends to talk to.
C.They are afraid of being laughed at.
D.They believe they can solve problems alone.
58.Which of the following is NOT the experts’ advice?
A.Studying as long as possible. B.Arranging time in a wise way.
C.Taking up some hobbies. D.Talking to trusted people.
59.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Ways of improving study efficiency
B.Teenagers’ stress and how to deal with it
C.How to make friends with teenagers
D.The importance of good sleep
60.What’s the structure of the passage?
A.①②/③④/⑤⑥ B.①/②③④/⑤⑥
C.①②③/④/⑤⑥ D.①/②③/④⑤/⑥

There are crowded streets outside, there are people everywhere, there are noises all around them, but they do not seem to see them or hear them. They just stay in their homes worrying about being lonely. They feel so because of the lack of friends with the help of the internet, they may talk with a person ten thousand miles away, but they do not even know their neighbor's name. I'm one of these people. I live alone in a lonely house near a small farm about seven hours right from los Angeles. But i'm not lonely. I have quite a lot of friends. I visit them and talk with them in my home every day. Some of them tell me about events that took place one or two thousand years ago. Some tell me what is happening on some stars, tens of light years away from the earth. I visit them and talk with them at any time. I like early in the morning, late in the afternoon, or even at midnight, which never tires them. These friends of mine are something that are very easy to get books.
