We spend all four days outside so we can practice new skills. The week will include as much rock climbing as possible, but will allow one day for a hike or possibly some swimming at the beach(only when a lifeguard is there)at Lake Minnewaska. The actual arrangement of activities will change to take advantage of the weather. Rainy day activities can include: rappelling(绕绳下降), hiking, or indoor climbing.
Notes
• Please understand this is a group program and while we will work to increase participants’ skill level, the days will be planned to meet the needs of the whole group. If you want activities made just for your child, or a child who is a strong climber, you may want to consider a private outing.
• While we will plan on being out for rain, if bad thunderstorms are coming, we have the right to cancel the day.

A mother of three has been collecting backpacks for ten years to give out to children in need. When she dropped off her middle daughter 10 years ago, Amanda McCall noticed three children who didn’t have backpacks because their parents couldn’t afford them. “I thought, ’What could I do to make this better? ’That’s where I started,” said McCall. She then decided to start a backpack giveaway and gathered backpacks filled with school supplies.
The first year there were 75 backpacks and it was just for family and friends. As word started to spread about what she was doing, more people reached out, and each year the list got bigger. “With the rising cost of everything, the need is so great. Last year we had 552 bags and we had only 10 left when we were done. And that’s the first year that we didn’t completely run out,” said McCall. “I think this is our way of getting kids back to school at the best they can be.”
She follows the McLurg School Supply List, with items(物品)such as paper dividers, pencils, crayons, pens, erasers and other small donated supplies in the bags. “Everybody is just very thankful, and the kids are smiling from ear to ear. They’re so happy to have their new bags,” said McCall.
This year marked the 10th giveaway event, and McCall prepared just under 1, 000 backpacks filled with supplies. She received strong support from the community, with people donating money and supplies to help out. She said anyone was welcome to show up with their children if they needed a backpack, but there was a limit(限制)of three backpacks per family so they could make sure all families received a bag.
“I started this to teach my children that not everyone is as lucky as we are. Now that they’re grown, I just want to show people that even in a world that isn’t the best, there is a little bit of hope, and that one person can make a difference,” said McCall.
24. What inspired McCall to start the giveaway event?
A. Her daughter’s needs at school.
B. The rising cost of school supplies.
C. Support from the local community.
D. The sight of children without backpacks.
25. Why did McCall mention the numbers in paragraph 2?
A. To show the event was not well organized.
B. To stress how the great need for backpacks was.
C. To prove that fewer people needed help last year.
D. To explain why she limited backpacks per family.
26. Which of the following best describes Amanda McCall?
A. Kind and outgoing. B. Caring and helpful.
C. Confident and responsible. D. Creative and independent.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. A Mother’s 10-Year Mission B. A Special Family Activity
C. Helping Children Return to School D. Discovering the Joy of Sharing

A University of Melbourne student’s bright idea could change the way Australians living with a disability eat out.
EnAccess Maps, a new app developed by student Sabrina Leung, helps users find and review venues(场所)based on how easy they are to get around. Leung noticed that there wasn’t enough information for people who have trouble moving around. “One in five people have a disability, so it’s a pretty big need out there,” she said.
The app is designed to connect this community with venues ready to meet their needs. The platform(平台)allows users to set their needs for getting around, such as toilets they can use, movement space, parking, and step-free access(通道). “A restaurant might be easy to get into, but it could make you feel really awkward if you have to move all the chairs just to get to your table,” advisor Freya Elliott said.
While EnAccess Maps can be used across the world, the present focus is on Melbourne, with University of Melbourne students volunteering to map new places every month. “It helped me be more aware of the area around me and also more aware of how other people in a different situation interact(互动)with the same environment as I do,” volunteer Jiayi Tai said.
So far, more than 700 places have already been recorded, but the EnAccess Maps team is hoping more people jump online to review more, and that businesses come on board too. “Anyone can sign up for EnAccess Maps. It’s free,” team member Jacob Darkin said. “And you could be McDonald’s or you could be a Michelin star restaurant. It’s just about helping people understand how to get to your place.”
28. What can users do on EnAccess Maps?
A. Choose the safest way. B. Find easy-to-use places.
C. Share eating experiences. D. Book tables in restaurants.
29. What does Freya Elliott want to show in her words?
A. It is easy for the disabled to use the app.
B. Disabled people feel awkward everywhere.
C. Easy entry doesn’t mean good access inside.
D. Few restaurants are friendly to disabled people.
30. What are the volunteers doing with the app?
A. Adding new places to it.
B. Interacting with other users.
C. Introducing it to students.
D. Testing it in surrounding areas.
31. What does the app team hope?
A. They can give the app more uses.
B. They can find long-term partners.
C. Top restaurants can trust their work.
D. The public can be part of their effort.
D
As more people travel to destinations that may soon disappear because of climate change, experts and guides weigh in on how this practice could help protect these places — if done right.
Known as last-chance tourism, this “see-it-before-it’s-gone” practice is controversial. Research shows that the amount of fuel(燃料量)it takes to travel to these faraway destinations could speed up their very damage. But supporters say that, done responsibly, it can also inspire travellers to protect the very places they came to see.
As more people travel to see disappearing destinations like coral reefs(珊瑚礁), Robin Kundis Craig, a professor at the University of Kansas School of Law, warns that without education and careful limits, “millions of people are stepping on an already fragile(脆弱的)landscape that’s trying to deal with climate change”.
The negative effects of visitors travelling together to fragile ecosystems are well documented. As the seas warm and gas-powered boats bring more people to the Great Barrier Reef, the huge ecosystem recently experienced its worst environmental event, coral bleaching(白化), on record. Coral reefs in Indonesia and Hawaii have also been damaged by tourists, and seafloors can take years to return to normal after being damaged by the anchors(锚)of tourist boats. Venice has been suffering under the weight of over-tourism for ten years. And as more tourists now travel to Antarctica every year, they risk introducing invasive species(入侵物种)that harm fragile ecosystems.
In 2024, Craig published a paper showing that those who manage many “last-chance” destinations aren’ t prepared for the changing feelings travellers often experience when they visit — from joy to sadness. Craig argues that guides and park managers should direct travellers’ feelings into action to help protect these sites.
Ashley Perrin is a guide with Aurora Expeditions. For Perrin, each trip is an opportunity to share — and protect — some of the places she loves. “People won’t protect what they don’t know,” she said. “We need people to go and see these environments in order to fall in love with them — in order to protect them.”
32. What does the underlined word “controversial” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Widely accepted. B. Quite unexpected.
C. Attracting attention. D. Causing disagreement.
33. How is paragraph 4 mainly developed?
A. By giving examples. B. By describing a process.
C. By making comparisons. D. By following space order.
34. What should last-chance tourism lead to according to Craig?
A. Deep admiration of nature.
B. Memorable travel experiences.
C. Action to care for fragile ecosystems.
D. Opportunities to educate younger people.
35. What is Perrin’s attitude towards last-chance tourism?
A. Doubtful. B. Positive.
C. Curious. D. Unclear.

Now more and more people want to live a quiet and nice life in the countryside. Here are four top reasons why rural(乡村的)living is becoming so popular.
Space and quiet
The wish for more space is a main driver for those moving to the countryside. 36 . The peace and quiet of rural living reduces stress, allowing people to enjoy a slow, relaxed life. The large green fields and forests are perfect for those looking to get away from the busy and noisy city life.
Improved work-life balance
With the rise of remote(远程的)working, more people are finding that they can work from anywhere. 37 . They can decide based on their lifestyle, not their distance(距离)from work. The countryside offers a perfect setting for a balanced life, where one can work efficiently(效率高地)from a home office while still enjoying outdoor activities and a healthier way of living.
38
We are lucky that many rural areas offer a strong sense of community that is not easy to find in larger towns or cities. Neighbours know each other, and people often help and support each other. This kind of community can be especially good for families, offering a safe environment for children to grow up in. 39 .
Affordability and quality of life
House prices in rural areas are often lower than those in cities. 40 . This, along with the high quality of life that rural living offers, makes the countryside an attractive choice for families, retirees(退休人员), and young professionals alike.
A. Stronger community spirit.
B. Environmentally friendly lifestyle.
C. This helps buyers get more value for their money.
D. This freedom allows people to choose where they live.
E. Living in the country brings people closer to nature and animals.
F. Houses in the countryside are usually larger, with more outdoor space.
G. Local events and markets also help build connections and friendships.

My 16-year-old daughter, Linda, had always been a cheerful girl, full of laughter. Her transition(转变)to senior high school was originally met with great enthusiasm(热情). She would come home every day, sharing with us tales of her new experiences, her friends and the fun news of high school life. But as weeks went by, she became quieter and something seemed to be troubling her deeply.
My husband and I realized something was wrong, but we decided to wait until she was ready to open up. One evening, I prepared her favorite apple pie for supper, hoping it would cheer her up. However, that night, it was different. She seldom touched it, lost in thought. After the meal, we gathered in the living room, a space where our family had shared many heart-to-hearts. The air was heavy with unspoken words. My husband and I exchanged a quick look before I decided to break the silence. I gently brought up the subject, “Linda, you seemed worried lately. Is everything okay at school? You know you can always open up to me and your dad.”
Linda looked up, her eyes reflecting a mix of frustration(沮丧)and hopelessness. “Mom, I’m really struggling with maths. No matter how hard I try, I couldn’t understand it a little bit. I feel so lost.” she admitted, with her voice trembling slightly. My heart sank as I saw the sadness in her eyes. Maths had always been a challenging subject for her, but this time it seemed to go beyond the usual difficulties. Then I reached out, holding her hand and trying to offer comfort and said, “High school is a big step. and it’s okay to take some time to adjust. The most important thing is that you’ve been honest about how you’re feeling.” My husband cut in, “We can work through this together, step by step. Remember, we are always here for you.” Then we offered her some practical advice.

读后续写
Over the next few weeks, Linda followed the ways we discussed. At school, she sought additional help from her maths teacher, who provided her with additional guidance. Linda also joined a study group with her classmates, where they solved difficult problems together and shared some study methods about maths. At home, my husband and I kept encouraging her and acknowledged every small victory in her understanding of maths. We could see her gradually but surely overcome her fear of maths.
Finally came Linda’s final-term maths exam. The night before, she was understandably nervous, but there was a newfound confidence in her eyes. The day after the exam, Linda came home with a big smile. While she didn’t get the top score, she did much better than we expected. This achievement was more than just about the grade; it was about the journey she undertook to overcome her challenges. This small success brought not just relief but also a stronger bond in our family, united by our collective effort and belief in each other.
