My teacher was one of the people I most wanted to see whenever I visited New York City. Usually I’d call her as soon as I was settled, and it was thrilling to hear her voice and then to arrange a meeting time. But in 2024, when I turned 75 and she was 96, I put off making the call. Each time I thought about phoning her, I feared that when I said my name, she would say, “Who?”
I first met Lore Segal in 1975, when I took her writing class at Columbia University. Back then, all I knew about her was that she’d recently lost her husband. I hadn’t known that when she was a little girl, her family went through a series of ups and downs and that at 10 years old, she was even transported alone all the way to England, where she drifted between different temporary homes.
Small and self-confident, Lore had a pale face and curly hair. She was particular, her whole manner changing when someone expressed something pompous (言辞浮夸的) or emotional. She said firmly that no one ever again needed to describe someone drinking coffee or getting into and out of a car. She also stated that for a reader to remember a particular detail, you had to write it one and a half times, a rule both impossible to follow and true. When she leaned toward a text, I saw the obvious pleasure she took in sharing a passage and felt the pleasure welling up in me.
Lore held student conferences at her apartment near school. When it was my turn, we sat beside each other and she went page by page through my novel-in-progress manuscript. No one had ever before read my work so closely or seen anything special in me. And now came this extraordinary moment: my teacher was reading my words and laughing.
4. Why did the author delay calling Lore in 2024?
A. Lore refused to meet him. B. He was fully occupied with work.
C. He lost interest in meeting her. D. He worried she might forget him.
5. What do we know about Lore’s childhood?
A. She travelled a lot alone. B. She weathered bitter blows.
C. She lived in a fixed house. D. She taught writing in England.
6. What can we infer about Lore’s attitude towards writing?
A. She thought short articles work best. B. She hated all daily scene descriptions.
C. She ignored students’ writing faults. D. She prized plain and meaningful writing.
7. How did the author feel during one-on-one talks?
A. Inspired and valued. B. Shy and awkward.
C. Calm and indifferent. D. Nervous and uneasy.
D 5. B 6. D 7. A
根据第一段“But in 2024, when I turned 75 and she was 96, I put off making the call. Each time I thought about phoning her, I feared that when I said my name, she would say, “Who?” (但在2024年,我75岁,她96岁时,我推迟了打电话。每次我想到要给她打电话,我就担心当我说出我的名字时,她会说:“谁?”)”可知,作者推迟打电话是因为他担心老师可能已经忘记了他。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“I hadn’t known that when she was a little girl, her family went through a series of ups and downs and that at 10 years old, she was even transported alone all the way to England, where she drifted between different temporary homes. (我当时不知道,当她还是个小女孩的时候,她的家庭经历了一系列的起伏,10岁时,她甚至独自一人被送到英国,在不同的临时住所之间漂泊。)”可知,Lore的童年经历了家庭变故和颠沛流离,即她经历了痛苦的打击。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“She said firmly that no one ever again needed to describe someone drinking coffee or getting into and out of a car. She also stated that for a reader to remember a particular detail, you had to write it one and a half times, a rule both impossible to follow and true. (她坚定地说,再也不需要有人描述某人喝咖啡或上下车了。她还说,为了让读者记住一个特定的细节,你必须把它写上一遍半,这是一个既不可能遵循又正确的规则。)”可知,Lore反对浮夸空洞的描写,强调写作应精炼而有意义。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“No one had ever before read my work so closely or seen anything special in me. And now came this extraordinary moment: my teacher was reading my words and laughing. (从来没有人如此仔细地读过我的作品,也没有人看出我有什么特别之处。现在,这个非凡的时刻到来了:我的老师读着我的文字,笑了起来。)”可知,一对一交流时作者感受到被重视,备受鼓舞。

Most restaurants in Japan serve dishes with chopsticks or o-hashi. They can be a challenge to hold properly for first-timers, but chopsticks are easy to use once you get the hang of them. First, use your ring finger and the base of your thumb to hold the base chopstick and keep it immobile. Next, hold the top chopstick (the one that moves) like a pencil between your middle and index finger. It may sound complicated, but after some practice, you’ll get more used to it.
When you use disposable (一次性的) chopsticks in restaurants, simply break them apart. Most of them are of good quality and shouldn’t splinter (碎裂). But if they do, avert rubbing them together, as this is seen as poor manners in Japan.
If you have difficulty handling chopsticks, you can ask for a fork or spoon. Using chopsticks as a skewer (烤肉叉子) is considered bad manners or even childish. When you want to use your hands to gesture as you speak, put your chopsticks down first. Waving them around as you talk is a rude gesture.
When you want to set aside your chopsticks, put them on the hashioki (chopstick rest) or next to your bowl horizontally. Never stick them upright into your rice, as this is part of a Buddhist funeral ritual (仪式) of offering food to the dead and is considered offensive during mealtimes.
Passing food from one person to another, from chopsticks to chopsticks, is also forbidden. This act is another Buddhist ritual during funerals where the bones from the cremated (火化) ashes of the dead are passed to one another before transferring the bones into an urn (骨灰瓮). Instead of passing food in a similar manner, place something onto their plate or let them take it directly from their plate.
8. How should a beginner hold chopsticks?
A. Hold both chopsticks with the index finger and thumb.
B. Grasp both chopsticks tightly with all fingers to ensure stability.
C. Keep the base chopstick still and move the top one like holding a pencil.
D. Use the middle finger to hold the base chopstick and the ring finger for the top one.
9. What does the underlined phrase “avert” in the second paragraph mean?
A. Continue. B. Avoid. C. Enjoy. D. Repeat.
10. Which of the following actions is considered appropriate table manners in Japan?
A. Using chopsticks to get food like a skewer if it is slippery.
B. Sticking chopsticks upright into the rice to keep them steady.
C. Placing chopsticks horizontally next to the bowl when gesturing.
D. Waving chopsticks in the air to emphasize a point during a conversation.
11. Why is passing food directly from chopsticks to chopsticks forbidden in Japan?
A. Because it is considered rude to perform correctly.
B. Because it is a gesture usually reserved for the funerals.
C. Because it is generally regarded offensive during mealtimes.
D. Because it implies that the food is not clean enough to be shared.
C 9. B 10. C 11. B
根据第一段中的“First, use your ring finger and the base of your thumb to hold the base chopstick and keep it immobile. Next, hold the top chopstick (the one that moves) like a pencil between your middle and index finger.(首先,用无名指和拇指根部托住下方筷子并保持不动。然后,像握铅笔一样,用中指和食指握住上方那根可以活动的筷子)”可知,初学者拿筷子时要固定下方筷子,像握铅笔一样移动上方筷子。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中的“Most of them are of good quality and shouldn’t splinter (碎裂). But if they do, avert rubbing them together, as this is seen as poor manners in Japan.(大多数一次性筷子质量很好,不会碎裂。但如果出现木刺,要avert将筷子互相摩擦,因为这在日本被视作不礼貌的行为)”可知,既然是不礼貌的行为,就应该“避免”在这种情况下去做,因此,画线单词avert意为“避免”。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“When you want to use your hands to gesture as you speak, put your chopsticks down first.(当你想边说话边用手做手势时,先放下筷子)”以及第四段中的“When you want to set aside your chopsticks, put them on the hashioki (chopstick rest) or next to your bowl horizontally.(想要放下筷子时,可以放在筷架上或者水平放在碗旁)”可知,交谈做手势时,将筷子水平放在碗边是合乎礼仪的做法。
根据最后一段中的“Passing food from one person to another, from chopsticks to chopsticks, is also forbidden. This act is another Buddhist ritual during funerals where the bones from the cremated (火化) ashes of the dead are passed to one another before transferring the bones into an urn (骨灰瓮).(用筷子将食物从一个人直接夹到另一个人的筷子上也是被禁止的。这个动作是佛教葬礼上的一项仪式:人们会互相传递逝者火化后的遗骨,之后再将遗骨放入骨灰瓮中)”可知,筷子传食物被禁止,是因为该动作是葬礼专用的仪式动作。
D
“CUT!” barks the director, and chaos erupts at a film studio in Los Angeles. Actors rush off to change their costumes, while crew members hurry to arrange new stage items. It is only the second day of filming and they have already packed in a week’s worth of cliffhangers (悬念). Filming a micro-drama, the latest new-media format to emerge from China, is just as fast-paced as watching one. “It’s soaps on steroids (激素),” a screenwriter explains.
Micro-dramas are mini soap operas designed for the smartphone generation. Episodes are filmed in a vertical format and last just over a minute each. The acting tends to be overly dramatic, the story-lines often crazy, with titles like “The Ordinary Student’s Sudden Royal Heritage”. But the bite-sized stories are perfect for China’s many young working professionals: long trips to and from work and tiring schedules leave little time for binge-watching box-sets on the sofa.
A single micro-drama can cost over $10 to watch, with the first few episodes free of charge and the rest behind a paywall. Yet viewers have been willing to pay good money for it. This has fueled domestic enthusiasm: larger film companies are stepping in to expand production, while more traditional streaming platforms are setting up their own micro-drama channels.
Now many apps are spreading the love, delivering micro-dramas to new audiences outside China. They don’t just translate Chinese series but also create original content with foreign actors, writers and directors. However, due to cultural differences, overseas actors sometimes struggle to understand why Chinese producers insist on sticking to cheesy tropes (俗气的桥段) and over-the-top acting.
Nevertheless, micro-drama apps have reached a total of nearly 55m downloads and $170m in receipts overseas, according to iiMedia Research, a data provider. These vertical shorts don’t seem like a flash in the pan. Sometimes less really is more.
12. What is a feature of micro-dramas’ filming according to the text?
A. It adopts a high-tech style. B. It requires significant funds.
C. It is a highly efficient process. D. It involves numerous instructions.
13. Why are micro-dramas ideal for China’s many young workers?
A. They are insightful to watch. B. They fit well with their busy schedules.
C. They provide free episodes to viewers. D. They mirror the lives of young people.
14. What might be a challenge for the expansion of micro-dramas overseas?
A. Adaptation to local cultures. B. Competition from local dramas.
C. High standards in global markets. D. Lack of appropriate foreign actors.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Soap Operas Develop Quickly in Digital Era
B. Chinese Film Industry Sees a New Transformation
C. Micro-Dramas Bring More Opportunities to the World
D. China’s Micro-Dramas Will Enjoy Long-Term Success
C 13. B 14. A 15. D
根据第一段“It is only the second day of filming and they have already packed in a week’s worth of cliffhangers (悬念). Filming a micro-drama, the latest new-media format to emerge from China, is just as fast-paced as watching one.(才拍摄第二天,他们就已经拍完了相当于一周分量的悬念剧情。拍摄微短剧 —— 这种中国最新出现的新媒体形式,其节奏和观看它时一样快。)”可知,微短剧的拍摄是一个效率极高的过程。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“But the bite-sized stories are perfect for China’s many young working professionals: long trips to and from work and tiring schedules leave little time for binge-watching box-sets on the sofa.(但这些短小精悍的故事非常适合中国众多年轻职场人士:漫长的通勤路程和疲惫的日程安排让他们几乎没有时间在沙发上一口气看完一整部剧集。)”
根据第四段“However, due to cultural differences, overseas actors sometimes struggle to understand why Chinese producers insist on sticking to cheesy tropes (俗气的桥段) and over-the-top acting.(然而,由于文化差异,海外演员有时很难理解为什么中国制片人坚持使用俗气的桥段和夸张的表演。)”
通读全文特别是根据最后一段“Nevertheless, micro-drama apps have reached a total of nearly 55m downloads and $170m in receipts overseas, according to iiMedia Research, a data provider. These vertical shorts don’t seem like a flash in the pan.
Art comes in two main categories: realistic and abstract. Realistic art aims to show real-life scenes, people, and objects exactly as they appear. It involves paying close attention to details, making things look like photographs.____16____. It’s more about expressing feelings, emotions, and ideas.
Realistic art is easy to understand. Viewers can easily recognize what is portrayed. Take the Mona Lisa, for example—it’s a realistic painting of a lady with a mysterious smile.____17____, helping us to learn about the past.
Unlike realistic art, abstract art is more about being creative. ____18____. They use shapes, colors and patterns to express feelings and ideas. Abstract art means different things to different people. Some people enjoy trying to figure out what the artwork conveys.
_____19_____. Realistic art needs precision in drawing or sculpting to make things look real. Abstract art requires imagination to use shapes and colors in new ways. Many artists are skilled in both. They create realistic pieces to demonstrate their technical skills and abstract ones to display their creativity.
As for personal preference, some people prefer the clear stories of realistic art while others are attracted to the mystery of abstract art, interpreting meanings in the shapes and forms. Together, the two kinds of art make the art world diverse and engaging.____20____.
A. Both types of art take skills to make
B. Photographs preserve faces of folks from long ago
C. Grasping abstract art demands more artistic training
D. Both ways of creating art have their own value and beauty
E. In contrast, abstract art focuses less on realistic appearances
F. Artworks like this tell stories about history and everyday life
G. Artists have the freedom to go beyond real-life representations
E 17. F 18. G 19. A 20. D
根据后文“It’s more about expressing feelings, emotions, and ideas.(它更多的是表达感觉、情感和想法。)” E“In contrast, abstract art focuses less on realistic appearances(相比之下,抽象艺术较少关注现实的外观)”提出了主题“抽象艺术”,呼应“It”,同时“In contrast”可与前文构成对比关系,前后衔接紧密。故选E项。
根据前文“Take the Mona Lisa, for example—it’s a realistic painting of a lady with a mysterious smile.(以《蒙娜丽莎》为例,这是一幅现实主义画,画的是一位带着神秘微笑的女士。)” F“Artworks like this tell stories about history and everyday life(像这样的艺术品讲述了历史和日常生活的故事)”中“Artworks like this”指代前文的《蒙娜丽莎》,且讲述了现实主义艺术的特点,与后文“helping us to learn about the past(帮助我们了解过去)”在内容上衔接紧密。故选F项。
根据前文“Unlike realistic art, abstract art is more about being creative.(与现实主义艺术不同,抽象艺术更注重创造性。)” G“Artists have the freedom to go beyond real-life representations(艺术家有超越现实生活表现的自由)”中“超越现实生活表现的自由”即为前文提及的“创造性”的进一步解释,同时呼应后文“They use shapes, colors and patterns to express feelings and ideas.(他们用形状、颜色和图案来表达感情和想法。)”
根据后文“Realistic art needs precision in drawing or sculpting to make things look real. Abstract art requires imagination to use shapes and colors in new ways.(现实主义艺术需要精确的绘画或雕刻,使事物看起来真实。抽象艺术需要想象力,以新的方式使用形状和颜色。)”可知,该段讲述的核心内容是两种艺术各自需要的技巧以及艺术家们对两种艺术的应用。选项A“Both types of art take skills to make(这两种类型的艺术都需要技巧)”提出两种艺术都需要技巧,可总结该段的核心内容,作为该段的首句。故选A项。
根据前文“Together, the two kinds of art make the art world diverse and engaging.(这两种艺术共同使艺术世界多样化和引人入胜。)” D“Both ways of creating art have their own value and beauty(两种艺术创作方式都有各自的价值和美)”总结了各自的价值和美,与前文在句意上衔接紧密,可作为末尾句。故选D项。

Dear John,
As for your dilemma, I’m writing to recommend you rank academic study first, with music as a leisure pursuit following behind.
Solid academic training takes priority over everything. Without it, your musical inspiration would ring hollow. Besides, important as online fame is, it should never be pursued at the expense of academic qualifications. It is only when a solid academic foundation is guaranteed that your musical talent can truly flourish, for knowledge expands the mind and deepens emotional resonance in your works.
So remember, a well-rounded mind produces timeless art, and a secure future grants you the freedom to make creations without fear.
Yours,
Li Hua

It was a cold December morning, and the wind was blowing fiercely through the streets of our small town. The sky was overcast, and a light snow had begun to fall, making the sidewalks slippery and the air bite at our cheeks. I was walking to school with my best friend Lily, both of us dressed up in thick coats and scarves, when we noticed a group of people gathered in front of the community center. Curious, we walked closer and saw a young boy sitting on the concrete steps, holding a cardboard sign that read, “My family lost everything in the fire. Please help.”
The boy looked about our age, maybe fourteen or fifteen, with tired eyes and a worn-out jacket that was clearly too thin for the weather. His hair was messy, and there were dark circles under his eyes. Beside him stood his mother, a small woman with a kind face, who was trying her best to smile at the passers-by, but we could see the worry and exhaustion written all over her face. A small donation box sat between them on the steps, containing only a few coins and crumpled (皱巴巴的) bills. Most people walked by without stopping, some glancing sympathetically but too busy to pause.
Lily stopped in her tracks. She stared at the boy and his mother for a moment, her brow furrowed. “We have to do something,” she whispered. After some talks with the mother, Lily pulled out her phone and began typing. Within minutes, she posted some photos of the boy and his mother on social media, along with a heartfelt message about their situation — how their house had burned down just two nights ago, how they had escaped with nothing but the clothes on their backs, and how they were desperately in need of warm clothes, food, and a place to stay.
By lunchtime, something remarkable had happened. The post had been shared over a thousand times. People from all over the town began showing up at the community center with warm clothes, blankets, food, and money. The local newspaper even sent a reporter to cover the story. Volunteers from a nearby church had arrived to help organize the donations.
注意:
1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1: When we returned to the community center after school, we were shocked by what we saw.

Paragraph 2: Seeing us, the boy and his mother walked over.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1: When we returned to the community center after school, we were shocked by what we saw. Piles of warm coats, blankets and boxes of food lined the steps. Many townspeople were still coming one after another, carrying donations. Volunteers sorted goods in an orderly way. The donation box was full, and more envelopes with cash were placed beside it. The reporter was finishing his interview. Snowflakes kept falling, but the whole place was filled with warmth instead of coldness. Lily and I hurried over and joined the volunteers to arrange the supplies.
Paragraph 2: Seeing us, the boy and his mother walked over. The mother’s eyes were wet with tears. She thanked us repeatedly for what we had done. The boy smiled shyly and told us they had received enough clothes and food. What’s more, a family in the town offered them a spare apartment for temporary shelter. We felt so proud. A small post online lit up their dark days. At that moment, I realized even small kindness could make a big difference.

注意:
1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1: When we returned to the community center after school, we were shocked by what we saw.

Paragraph 2: Seeing us, the boy and his mother walked over.
