Every autumn, I give my first-year college students an unusual writing task: imagine that they are alone at an old telephone booth (电话亭) in the Mojave Desert. The night is quiet, and there is no one for miles. Suddenly, the phone rings. “Who is calling?” I ask. Students must explain not only who is calling but also why that person has chosen to call them.
The idea came from a real telephone booth that once stood in the California desert. Travelers visited it because anyone, from anywhere, might call. Although the booth has disappeared, I wondered whether an unexpected call could open an unexpected conversation. So I turned the idea into a writing task.
I expected many kinds of answers. Some students imagined conversations with historical figures; others received calls from grandparents they had never met or strangers asking for help. But one choice appeared repeatedly: students imagined receiving a call from an older version of themselves.
At first, I thought this simply happened by chance. Then the same pattern appeared semester (学期) after semester. Curious, I reread dozens of stories, paying attention not to who was calling but to what was being said. The future selves rarely talked about wealth, fame or great success. Instead, they offered words of comfort. They told their younger selves that failure would pass, loneliness would disappear gradually and life would become larger than today’s worries.
Then I understood. These imagined callers were not predicting (预测) the future. They were giving words to hopes the students already carried but had never expressed. By imagining someone who did not exist, students found a safe way to speak honestly about the lives they were living.
The telephone booth, then, is not really the destination. It is a doorway. Sometimes imagination does not take us away from reality; it helps us see it more clearly. The voice we are waiting to hear may have been our own all along.
4. What were the students asked to do?
A. Make up a caller at a phone booth. B. Interview an older relative.
C. Describe a phone booth in California. D. Report a recent visit to the desert.
5. What surprised the author most?
A. Students gave their answers really quickly.
B. Many students imagined great figures calling.
C. Talking with future selves is a frequent choice.
D. Students found real stories about the phone booth.
6. What did the future selves mainly say to the students?
A. Warnings about danger. B. News about coming events.
C. Advice on gaining wealth. D. Words to comfort themselves.
7. Which idea may the author agree with?
A. Calls can connect distant people.
B. Listening to others’ voice matters greatly.
C. Imagination helps us see life clearly.
D. Future selves may help us find success.

For decades, movie studios have relied on advance screenings (提前放映) to assess how audiences respond to in-development films, with viewer reactions informing edits, re-shoots and even changed endings.
Studios typically collect qualitative feedback (反馈) that relies only on memory after films end — if audiences in this busy age even finish watching. But researchers at the University of Bristol in England now seek to modernize this method with a first-of-its-kind “smart” movie theater with high-tech equipment to measure viewers’ instant physical reactions.
Located on the institution’s new campus, the 35-seat Smart Cinema pairs the familiar high-resolution laser projector and Dolby surround-sound speakers with technologies foreign to most movie houses: heart rate monitors, EEG headsets and high-tech cameras.
“With this smart cinema technology and with these methods, you don’t have to take the risk of releasing something and hoping it works. You can actually get real audience insight, moment by moment, into how they’re responding and then make changes before release,” says Iain Gilchrist, the co-author of a study that applied those methods.
Researchers showed 40 people ten short TV videos of different story types while collecting data about their bodies by monitoring viewers’ pulses (脉搏), brain waves, body heat, skin responses and eye movements. The research team found that viewers’ attention and personal involvement had connections with heart rate matching and consistent eye movement, yet their capacity to follow story plots showed no such link.
A short science fiction drama called RENO became the Smart Cinema’s first tested film this week, playing to roughly 200 viewers. Fittingly, the film explores the relationship between humans and artificial intelligence (AI) and was produced on an experimental stage at the university that makes use of virtual reality technology.
“As a director, having the opportunity to conduct an audience test of RENO in the Smart Cinema is truly invaluable,” says Rob Hifle, the film’s director. “It’s not just about improving the film; it’s also about connecting with viewers, understanding their reactions. This experience will undoubtedly shape the final cut in ways I can’t yet imagine.”
8. What can Smart Cinema gain from viewers?
A. Suggestions for story adjustments. B. Complete personal preference lists.
C. Real-time direct responses to the movie. D. Their long-term emotional changes.
9. What discovery came out of the study?
A. Engagement relates to certain body signals.
B. Short videos work better for movie testing.
C. Brain waves showed viewers’ attention levels.
D. Heart rate matching improved story understanding.
10. What does Rob Hifle say about the Smart Cinema test?
A. It speeds up film production.
B. It judges and improves audience tastes.
C. It will replace the director’s creative role.
D. It affects his film in unexpected ways.
11. What can be the best title for the text?
A. RENO: A Sci-Fi Story of AI
B. The Secret of Happy Viewers
C. This Cinema Watches You Watch
D. Advance Screenings: Memory Still Matters

A new study from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill shows an amazing fact about insects, raising concerns about the health of ecosystems (生态系统) that depend on them.
Keith Sockman, associate professor of biology at UNC-Chapel Hill, counted how many flying insects there were during 15 seasons between 2004 and 2024 on a subalpine meadow (亚高山草甸) in Colorado, a site with 38 years of weather data and almost no direct human impact. He discovered an average annual decline of 6.6% in insect populations, amounting to a 72.4% drop over the 20 years.
The study also found that this steep decline is associated with rising summer temperatures. “In the biodiversity crisis, insects are in a special but inauspicious position. This is because they provide important ecological services, such as nutrient cycling and pollination (授粉), while at the same time they are easily harmed by environmental change,” Sockman said. “Insects are necessary for land and fresh-water ecosystems to function, but they are struggling now.”
The findings address a critical gap in global insect research. While many reports of insect declines focus on habitats changed by human activity, few examine populations in relatively untouched areas. This study demonstrates that dramatic losses can occur even where direct human impacts are very small, suggesting climate change may be a key driver. “Several recent studies report significant insect declines across a variety of human-changed ecosystems, particularly in North America and Europe,” Sockman said. “Most such studies report on ecosystems that have been directly impacted by humans or are surrounded by impacted areas, raising questions about insect declines and their drivers in more natural areas.”
Sockman emphasizes the urgency of these results for biodiversity conservation: “Mountains are host to high numbers of locally adapted species that live only there, including insects. Thus, the status of mountains as biodiversity hotspots may be at risk if the declines shown here reflect trends broadly.”
This research highlights the need for more comprehensive monitoring of insect populations in a variety of landscapes and adds urgency to addressing climate change. By showing that even remote ecosystems are affected, the study points to the global scale of the biodiversity crisis.
12. What did Sockman’s study find?
A. Human damage to the mountain areas. B. A continuous fall of flying insect numbers.
C. New insect species appearing in the wild. D. Quick changes of weather conditions in Colorado.
13. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “inauspicious” in paragraph 3?
A. Specific. B. Unfamiliar. C. Safe. D. Unlucky.
14. What gap does the study fill in insect research?
A. Data from less-disturbed natural sites. B. Proof of human influence on biodiversity.
C. Methods to protect damaged insect habitats. D. Records collected in heavily polluted regions.
15. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A. Remote areas remain free of climate harm. B. The biodiversity trouble spreads worldwide.
C. Mountain species can adapt to warming fast. D. Climate actions have greatly slowed insect decline.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
There is a moment in life when we realise that less truly is more. For me, it arrived when I watched my mother prepare tea. She used just a glass cup, green leaves, and water boiled three times. “The third boil,” she said, “is when the water learns to breathe.” I thought her funny. ____16____
Modern life, however, makes it hard for people to live simply. We are flooded with messages and expectations. ____17____ As a result, we make worse decisions, become less creative, and feel very tired. The more we accumulate, the more we have to carry, and what we carry eventually carries us. Adding more does not make life better; it makes it heavier.
____18____ People think doing many things at once is great, but it’s not. Scientists say it makes you 40% less efficient. In a world where many things distract you, the bravest thing is to fully focus on what you are doing. Simplicity requires courage too. It is easier to accumulate than to let go of habits that no longer serve us. Yet letting go is not a loss or failure; it is a choice and freedom.
Start small and embrace the power of empty space. ____19____ In traditional Chinese painting, “leaving white” — the empty space — is as important as the brush marks. Life needs empty space too. Our capacity to appreciate depends on leaving some of it unused.
Simplicity is a superpower in today’s world. ____20____ You are making space for what actually matters. As my mother used to say, “The tea is just leaves and water. But when you pay attention, it becomes something else entirely.” That is what she meant: less is more.
A. Big changes always bring the best results.
B. When you simplify, you are not losing anything.
C. Perfection is achieved when nothing is left to add.
D. Learning to do one thing at a time is a great shift.
E. This means there is more information than our brain can handle.
F. Now, I understand she spoke of the profound power of simplicity.
G. Clear out one drawer, delete a useless app, or spend ten minutes in silence.

I sat there silently, letting her ____27____ make sense to me. Something soft ____28____ inside me. I realised my name was more than a word people struggled to pronounce. Instead, it carried a story I had never bothered to ____29____. It was no longer a label that embarrassed me, but an incredible thread (线) ____30____ me to people I had never known and places I had never been to. I also started to wonder whether I had been looking for belonging in the ____31____ places for so long.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Mark was a shy high school student who always preferred staying at home to taking any unpredictable adventure. However, on a stormy Friday afternoon, his grandfather handed him a small, delicate wooden clock wrapped in thick paper. The clock was a special gift for Mr. Henderson, an old neighbor known in the community for his bad temper and serious look.
“Deliver this safely, Mark,” his grandfather said with an encouraging smile. “It took me weeks to make it. Mr. Henderson has been waiting for a long time.”
Unwillingly, Mark held the package tightly under his arm and stepped out into the wind and heavy rain. Raindrops kept hitting his face, making it hard for him to keep his eyes open. As he walked along the dark, slippery street, his worry grew stronger with every step. Children in the neighborhood were all afraid of Mr. Henderson and avoided his house. The thought of facing the old man made Mark’s stomach twist in fear.
Finally, Mark arrived at the dark front door. Standing under the wet roof, he took a deep breath to calm himself down and knocked softly. A moment later, the heavy door opened, and Mr. Henderson appeared. The old man folded his arms, looking down at Mark with an icy expression. “What do you want, kid?” Mr. Henderson asked in a hard, cold voice. “I... I brought the clock from my grandfather,” Mark stammered (结巴着说) nervously, stepping forward to hand over the package.
Suddenly, disaster happened. Mark’s wet shoes slipped on the smooth wooden floor. He lost his balance completely, his arms swinging wildly in the air. The package flew out of his hands and dropped onto the ground with a loud crash. The sharp sound of broken wood instantly filled the quiet entrance hall. Mark dropped to his knees, his heart sinking as he looked at the pieces around him. He slowly raised his head, facing the old man’s angry eyes.
注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右;(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Mark froze for a moment, waiting nervously for Mr. Henderson’s reaction.

【答案】4. A 5. C 6. D 7. C

【答案】12. B 13. D 14. A 15. B

By showing that even remote ecosystems are affected, the study points to the global scale of the biodiversity crisis.(该研究凸显需要对各类区域的昆虫种群开展更全面监测,也让应对气候变化变得更加紧迫。
【答案】16. F 17. E 18. D 19. G 20. B
【解析】

Scientists say it makes you 40% less efficient.(人们认为同时做很多事很棒,但事实并非如此。科学家说这会让你的效率降低40%)”批判了多任务并行的做法,D选项“Learning to do one thing at a time is a great shift.(学会一次只做一件事是一个巨大的转变)”正面提出本段核心主张——一次只做一件事,与下文批判的“doing many things at once”形成正反对照。
【19题详解】
上文“Start small and embrace the power of empty space.(从小处着手,拥抱留白的力量)”提出行动建议——从小事做起、拥抱留白,G选项“Clear out one drawer, delete a useless app, or spend ten minutes in silence.(清理一个抽屉、删掉一个没用的应用,或者静坐十分钟)”以三个具体的微小行动举例说明“Start small”的实际做法,与上文构成总分例证关系。
【20题详解】
上文“Simplicity is a superpower in today’s world.(在当今世界,简单是一种超能力)”总结简约的价值,B选项 “When you simplify, you are not losing anything.(当你做减法时,你并没有失去任何东西)”先让步澄清一个常见误解——简化不是失去;下文“You are making space for what actually matters.(你正在为真正重要的东西腾出空间)”以“You are making space”正面解释B选项中“not losing anything”的真正含义 。

One possible version:
Dear Editor,
Regarding the upcoming city park ecological protection activity, I would like to express my choice. I strongly prefer the environmental volunteer activity over the English speaking contest.
My reasons are as follows. First, the volunteer activity allows us to take practical actions, which directly benefit the park’s ecosystem. Second, through hands-on participation, we can gain a deeper understanding of ecological protection, which is more valuable. Although the English speaking contest can improve our language skills, I believe that the volunteer activity better aligns with the event’s core purpose and offers a truly meaningful experience. Moreover, working together as a team helps us develop a sense of responsibility.
I hope my suggestion is helpful.
Yours,
Li Hua

Guided by Mr. Henderson, Mark began to pick up the pieces carefully.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Mark froze for a moment, waiting nervously for Mr. Henderson’s reaction. “I’m so sorry, sir! It was an accident,” he stammered. He prepared himself for a furious roar, but to his surprise, the anger never came. Instead, Mr. Henderson slowly bent down beside him. “Don’t cry, young man,” the old man said gently, sighing softly. “It’s just wood and craft. Things can always be fixed.” Looking into his warm eyes, Mark realized the old neighbor was not scary at all, but simply lonely. “Let’s clean this up first,” Mr. Henderson added with a smile.
Guided by Mr. Henderson, Mark began to pick up the pieces carefully. Together, they spent the next two hours sitting on the warm carpet, fixing the broken clock step by step. As Mark carefully glued the wooden parts back, the old man patiently guided him and shared lively stories about his youth. The once silent house was soon filled with laughter and warm conversation. When the rain finally stopped, the clock was ticking rhythmically again. Walking home under the clear sky, Mark felt a strong sense of pride, learning that courage often comes from understanding others.
