Text 1 W: I argued with my best friend yesterday. I don't know what to say to her.
M: Don't worry. Call her right away and say sorry. Talking face to face is better than texting.
W: You're right. I'll call her this evening.
Question: What does the man advise the girl to do?
Text 2 M: Excuse me, could you tell me where the school hall is? I'm here for the speech.
W: Go along this way and turn left. It's next to the library.
M: Thank you very much.
Question: Where does the man want to go?
Text 3 W: You look nervous, Tom. Are you ready for your speech?
M: Not really. There will be more than two hundred listeners.
W: Take a deep breath and speak slowly. You'll be fine.
M: Thanks. I'll try.
Question: How does the woman help Tom?
Text 4 M: Hi, Amy. I called you last night, but you didn't answer.
W: Sorry. I was at a meeting. I'll call you back after dinner.
M: OK. Talk to you then.
Question: When will Amy call the man back?
Text 5 W: How do you keep in touch with your cousin in Canada?
M: We make a video call every Sunday. It's free, and we can see each other.
W: That's a good way.
Question: How does the man keep in touch with his cousin?
Text 6 W: Hello, this is Anna speaking.
M: Hi, Anna. This is Li Ming. Sorry to call so late. Are you busy?
W: Not at all. What's up?
M: I'm nervous about the English speech on Friday. Could you help me practise?
W: Sure. What's your speech about?
M: It's about how to talk with parents. But I don't know how to start.
W: You can begin with a question, like "Do you often talk with your parents?" That will interest the listeners.
M: Good idea. And I'm afraid I'll forget my words.
W: Then write down the key points on a card. Don't read the whole speech.
M: OK. When can we meet?
W: How about tomorrow afternoon, in the school library?
M: Great. Thanks a lot, Anna.
W: You're welcome. Remember to look at the listeners and smile.
Question 6: Why does Li Ming call Anna?
Question 7: What is Li Ming's speech about?
Question 8: How does Anna advise Li Ming to begin his speech?
Question 9: What should Li Ming write on a card?
Question 10: Where will they meet?
Text 7 Ben was a quiet boy. He seldom spoke in class, because he was afraid of making mistakes. Last term, his teacher asked him to give a speech at the school meeting. Ben wanted to say no, but his teacher said, "If you try, you will find it is not so hard."
Ben decided to join the school speech club. Every Tuesday, the club members practised in the school hall. At first, Ben's hands shook and his voice was very low. A girl named Grace told him, "Look at one person in the front row, and speak to him. Don't think about the other people." Ben tried it, and slowly he felt calmer.
He also recorded his speech and listened to it at home. He found that he spoke too fast, so he practised again and again.
Last Friday, Ben stood on the stage in front of three hundred students. He remembered Grace's advice, looked at a boy in the front row and began. When he finished, everyone clapped. Ben said, "The best way to get over fear is to face it."
Question 11: Why did Ben seldom speak in class?
Question 12: Where did the club members practise?
Question 13: What did Grace tell Ben to do?
Question 14: What did Ben find when he listened to his recording?
Question 15: What can we learn from Ben's story?
Text 8 Hello, everyone. Here is something about our Communication Workshop. The workshop will be on Saturday, March sixth, from nine to half past eleven, in the school hall. Our speaker is Ms. Brown, a professor from a university. She will talk about how to start a conversation with new people, and how to listen carefully. In the second part, students will work in pairs and practise making phone calls. Please bring a notebook, because you will write down some useful expressions. If you want to join, sign your name on the list in the school office before Thursday. Thank you.

If I listen first, he will calm down.";第四段写结果与收获,用 make up、understand each other 等词块收束。
Communication is the key to good relationships. Last term, I learned this the hard way.
One afternoon, my deskmate Li Wei borrowed my new pen and lost it. I was angry and said something unkind. He said nothing and turned away. For three days, we didn't speak, and I felt terrible.
Then I decided to talk to him face to face. After school, I found him in the classroom. My hands were shaking, but I took a deep breath and said, "I'm sorry for my words. I was too angry." To my surprise, he said sorry too. We talked for half an hour. If you listen to others first, they will listen to you. That is what I learned that day.
Now we are good friends again. If a misunderstanding happens, don't keep silent. A short and honest talk can make everything better.

本单元高频考点包括:if 引导的条件状语从句(主句用一般将来时、情态动词或祈使句,从句用一般现在时)、argue with、make up with、pay attention to、face to face、in person、drop sb a line、find out、take place、benefit from、keep ... away from、show interest in 等词块,以及 communication、speech、expression、chance、meeting、difficulty、nervous、calm、impolite、sincere、reasonable、trust、misunderstanding 等词汇。

Last term, I had a misunderstanding with my deskmate, Han Mei. She borrowed my dictionary and lost it. I was angry and said, "You never take care of other people's things." She said nothing and turned away.
For a week, we didn't speak. I sat next to her, but it felt like there was a wall between us. I missed her jokes and her help with maths.
One Friday, I found a new dictionary in my desk. Inside was a card: "I'm sorry. I looked for yours for three days, but I couldn't find it. This one is for you. — Han Mei"
I felt terrible. I had said something hurtful, but she still thought of me. I went to her and said sorry for my words. She smiled and said, "I was waiting for you to talk to me."
Now we are good friends again. I learned that a misunderstanding can be cleared up with one honest conversation. If you keep silent, the wall will only get higher.

C. Han Mei forgot the writer's birthday.

Being a good listener is not easy. Most people listen with only half an ear — they are already thinking about what to say next. Here are some tips for you.
Look at the speaker. When you look at the person who is talking, he or she will feel that you care. Don't look at your phone. Even one look at the screen can make the speaker stop.
Don't finish other people's sentences. You may think you know what they will say, but you may be wrong. Let them finish, and then ask a question.
Ask about details. If your friend says, "I had a bad day," don't just say, "Oh." Ask, "What happened?" These small questions show that you want to understand, not just to reply.
A good listener does not need to give perfect advice. Sometimes people just want someone to sit with them and listen.
57. What do most people do when they listen? ( )
A. They look at their phones.
B. They ask many questions.
C. They take notes.
D. They think about what to say next.
58. Why shouldn't you finish other people's sentences? ( )
A. It makes you tired.
B. You may be wrong about what they will say.
C. It is not polite to speak first.
59. According to the passage, what does a good listener need to do? ( )
A. Give perfect advice.
B. Change the subject often.
C. Sit with the speaker and listen.

My grandmother lives in a small village, eight hundred kilometres away. Before, we wrote letters. Her letters came once a month, and I always read them many times.
Last winter, my father bought Grandma a smartphone. "Now you can see us," he said. But Grandma was afraid of it. She thought she would press the wrong button and break it. "I'm too old to learn," she said.
I decided to teach her. Every Sunday evening, we had a video call. At first, she held the phone too close to her face, so I could only see her nose. I laughed, and she laughed too. Then I told her to put the phone on the table and sit back.
It took six weeks. The first time she called me by herself, she was so proud that she called three times in one hour. "I can see your new haircut!" she said.
Now Grandma uses her phone every day. She sends me photos of her flowers and her cat. She even joined a group of old friends in her village. Last week she told me, "The world is smaller now. You are far away, but you are also in my hand."
60. How did the writer and Grandma keep in touch before? ( )
A. By writing letters. B. By making phone calls. C. By sending emails.

A. Old people cannot learn new things.
B. A phone can make faraway family feel close.

Topic: Is a text message as good as a face-to-face talk?
Liu Tao: Texting is quick and easy. I can send a message in ten seconds, even in class. When I am shy, it is easier to say "I'm sorry" in a message than face to face.
Zhang Rui: But a message has no voice and no face. I can't tell if my friend is really fine or just writing "fine". Once my best friend texted "I'm OK" for a week, and later I found she was very sad.
Ms. Sun (teacher): Both have their place. For a simple question — "What's the homework?" — a message is enough. But if you want to say something important, or if two people are angry with each other, talk in person. Your voice and your eyes carry more than your words.
Chen Ming: I agree with Ms. Sun. Last month my brother and I got angry with each other. We texted for two days and got angrier and angrier. Then we sat down and talked for ten minutes. That ended it.
64. Why does Liu Tao like texting? ( )
A. It is cheaper than talking.
B. It helps him make more friends.
C. His friends never answer calls.
D. It is quick and easier for shy people.
65. What problem does Zhang Rui mention? ( )
A. Messages are too long to read.
B. You can't tell how a person really feels.
C. Old people cannot send messages.
66. What does Ms. Sun think? ( )
A. Messages should never be used.
B. Teachers should not send messages.
C. Talking in person is better for important things.

Words are only part of communication. In fact, when you talk to someone, more than half of the message comes from your body.
Stand up straight. If you bend your head and look at the floor, people may think you are not interested or not sure of yourself. Standing up straight with your shoulders back makes you look confident.
Keep eye contact. Looking at the person you are talking to shows respect. But don't stare — in many cultures, looking at someone for too long can make people uncomfortable. Look away for a second from time to time.
Watch the distance. If you stand too close, the other person may step back. If you stand too far, he may think you are cold. An arm's length is usually comfortable.
Smile. A smile is the same in every language. It says, "I am friendly. You can talk to me."
Next time you are in a conversation, watch your body. Confident words with a nervous body still send the wrong message.
67. What does standing up straight make you look? ( )
A. Confident. B. Tired. C. Funny.
68. Why shouldn't you stare at someone? ( )
A. It is bad for your eyes.
B. It makes you tired.
C. It may make the person uncomfortable.
69. The underlined word "Confident" in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to "______". ( )
A. friendly to others B. careful with words
C. interested in people D. sure of oneself
70. What is the passage mainly about? ( )
A. How to start a conversation.
B. Why body language matters.
C. How to make a speech.
