The Lost Art of Listening
We live in a noisy world. Every day, we are bombarded with information from our phones, computers, and television. In this noisy environment, the art of listening is disappearing. We are so busy thinking about what to say next that we forget to truly hear the person speaking to us.
Listening is not the same as hearing. Hearing is a passive process — sound enters your ears. Listening is active — it requires focus and intention. When you truly listen, you are not just waiting for your turn to speak. You are trying to understand the other person’s perspective, feelings, and needs.
Research shows that most people remember only about 25% of what they hear. This leads to misunderstandings, conflicts, and missed opportunities for connection. In relationships, poor listening is often the root cause of arguments. Couples who practice active listening report higher satisfaction in their relationships.
So how can we become better listeners? First, put away your phone and make eye contact. Second, avoid interrupting. Let the other person finish their thoughts. Third, ask clarifying questions to show you are engaged. Finally, reflect back what you heard — “What I’m hearing is...” — to confirm understanding.
In our fast-paced world, listening has become a rare gift. But it is one of the most powerful things we can give to others. When we listen, we show respect and care. We build trust and deepen our relationships.
26. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. The difference between hearing and listening. B. The importance of listening and how to improve it. C. How to avoid arguments with friends. D. The dangers of modern technology.
27. According to the passage, what percentage of what people hear do they remember?
A. About 10%. B. About 25%. C. About 50%. D. About 75%.
28. What is the difference between hearing and listening?
A. Hearing is active, listening is passive. B. Hearing requires intention, listening is automatic. C. Listening is active and requires focus. D. There is no real difference.
29. What does the underlined word “engaged” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. 参与的、专注的 B. 分开的 C. 无聊的 D. 生气的
30. What does the writer suggest doing to confirm understanding?
A. Repeat the speaker’s exact words. B. Reflect back what you heard. C. Ask the speaker to write it down. D. Change the subject to confirm.
C
① Have you ever considered how much of our communication is actually verbal? Studies suggest that words account for only 7% of our message. The rest comes from tone of voice (38%) and body language (55%). This is known as the “7-38-55 rule” of communication, developed by psychologist Albert Mehrabian.
② This means that when our words conflict with our body language, people are more likely to believe what they see and hear in your tone rather than your words. For example, if you say “I’m fine” with a sad tone and crossed arms, others will know that you are not actually fine. Your body gives you away.
③ Understanding this principle can greatly improve your communication. When you are giving a presentation, pay attention to your posture, gestures, and facial expressions. Stand tall, use open hand gestures, and make eye contact. These non-verbal signals communicate confidence and sincerity.
④ Similarly, when you are listening, your body language can show that you are paying attention. Nodding, leaning forward, and maintaining eye contact all signal that you are engaged. On the other hand, looking at your phone or checking your watch sends the opposite message.
⑤ The 7-38-55 rule reminds us that communication is not just about words. To be an effective communicator, you must align your verbal and non-verbal messages. When they match, you build trust and credibility. When they don’t, confusion and misunderstanding follow.
31. According to the 7-38-55 rule, what percentage of communication comes from body language?
A. 7%. B. 38%. C. 55%. D. 93%.
32. What happens when words conflict with body language?
A. People believe the words. B. People believe the body language and tone. C. People get confused and don’t believe anything. D. People ask for clarification.
33. What non-verbal signals suggest confidence according to the passage?
A. Crossing your arms. B. Standing tall and making eye contact. C. Looking down. D. Fidgeting.
34. What does the writer say about looking at your phone while listening?
A. It shows you are busy. B. It signals you are not engaged. C. It is acceptable in informal situations. D. It is a sign of intelligence.
35. What is the best title for this passage?
A. How to Speak Well B. The 7-38-55 Rule of Communication C. The Importance of Tone D. Listening Skills

听力材料
第一节
Text 1
W: I love chatting with friends online. It’s so convenient.
M: It is convenient, but I think it’s impersonal. You miss the emotions that come with face-to-face talk.
Text 2
M: What do you do when you don’t understand someone?
W: I ask them to repeat or explain. It’s better to ask than to pretend I understand.
Text 3
W: I think it’s important to show our feelings.
M: I agree. Bottling up emotions is unhealthy. Expressing them helps build stronger relationships.
Text 4
M: I think we should just forget about the argument.
W: No, we need to talk it out. That’s the only way to truly resolve it.
Text 5
M: In some countries, nodding means “yes”. In others, it can mean something else.
W: Yes, that’s why we need to learn about cultural differences before traveling.
第二节
Text 6 (6-7)
W: I always feel awkward when I have to make small talk.
M: Small talk is actually a useful skill. It helps break the ice and build connections.
W: But sometimes it feels forced.
M: It takes practice, but it gets easier. Try asking open-ended questions.
Text 7 (8-9)
M: I heard you’re going to the UK next month.
W: Yes, I’m so excited! But I’m worried about communication.
M: British people are usually polite and indirect. Don’t be too blunt or direct with your opinions.
Text 8 (10-12)
Hello, I’m Sarah, a communication coach. Today I want to talk about introverts. Many people think introverts are poor communicators. But that’s a misunderstanding. Introverts often listen more carefully and think before they speak. They bring thoughtfulness to conversations. They just need time to process. My advice is to be yourself. Don’t try to become someone you’re not. Authenticity is the most attractive quality in a communicator.
Text 9 (13-15)
W: You look worried. What’s wrong?
M: My best friend is being bullied at school. I don’t know what to do.
W: You need to talk to him first. Help him feel supported.
M: But what if the bully gets worse?
W: The most important thing is that your friend knows he’s not alone. Support him, and together you can find a solution.
