Huang Xuhua, the main designer of China's first-generation nuclear submarines (核潜艇), passed away on February 6th, 2025, in Wuhan, Hubei.
Huang was born in March 1926 in Guangdong. Growing up during the war, Huang entered Shanghai Jiao Tong University to study shipbuilding. After finishing school in 1949, he joined the Communist Party of China and started his work on building ships for China.
Nine years later, Huang began working on the top secret "09 Project" to develop China's first nuclear submarine. When he joined the project, China had no conditions for this high-tech work. The researchers got little knowledge about it, and other countries kept the technology secret. Huang and his team tried hard to make it. In 1970, they built China's first nuclear-powered submarine, Type 091. China became the fifth country to have one. Huang couldn't visit his mother for over 30 years until that moment. When he finally visited her in the late 1980s, she was in her 90s and his father had passed away. Huang worked so hard that he received many awards in his life. When some media called him the "father of China's nuclear submarine", Huang said, "The success came from great teamwork. I was simply doing what I should."
"We are sorry for his passing. But we must tell our children about Huang's story, encouraging them to fight for our country," said a Wuhan citizen, who came to mourn (哀悼) Huang with his children.

Do you often feel like there aren't enough hours in the day? Have you noticed that it can be hard to organize your time well? Here are some time management tips to help you organize your day better and make the most of your time.
Don't depend on your memory alone. Write a "to-do" list for each day, especially the night before or first thing in the morning.
Things don't always go as planned. Experts say that mistakes and unexpected things can take up half of your time. You may need to change your plans and do fewer things than you wanted.
If you are sure that what you have to do is of great importance, it will be easier to say "no" to things that you don't have to do and to people who make unexpected demands (要求) on your time. Remember, saying "no" isn't always a weakness.
People have more energy at different times of day. Some work better in the morning while some in the afternoon or evening. Try to do your tasks at the time that works best for you.
When there's a job you really dread doing, don't keep putting it off. Make "holes" in it by breaking it into smaller tasks. Do them one at a time and set a time limit (限定). This is called the "Swiss cheese method".
Good time management helps you work smarter, not harder. Try these tips step by step and see what works for you. If you keep trying and know yourself well, you can take control of your time and feel more comfortable and successful every day.
23. How does the writer lead in the topic?
A. By listing numbers.
B. By using examples.
C. By explaining reasons.
D. By asking questions.
24. Suppose you are busy with an important interview, but your friend invites you to play soccer. What should you say to him according to the text?
A. Sure, let's play together.
B. Sorry, I'm not available.
C. Let me ask my mom for advice.
D. No, I have no idea.
25. Which of the following is the closest to the underlined word "dread"?
A. Fear.
B. Regret.
C. Forget.
D. Enjoy.
26. What might be the best title of the text?
A. Make a To-do List.
B. Know Yourself Well.
C. Stop Wasting Time.
D. Manage Your Time Wisely.

In 2018, Science magazine asked some young scientists what schools should teach students. Most said students should spend less time remembering facts and have more space for creative activities.
This idea seems to make sense today. With the Internet and smart machines, knowledge is easy to find. What's more, civilizations (文明) develop through forgetting life skills that were once necessary. So, why should students carry so much knowledge in their heads?
______ For one, human beings have biases (偏见), and smart machines are likely to increase our biases. Many people believe smart machines are correct and objective (客观的), but machines are trained through a repeated way of testing and scoring. During the steps of practice, they depend on humans to decide on the correct answers.
Another problem is that being able to find answers so quickly makes us believe they are always in our heads. When there were no computers, we should make great efforts to get knowledge from other people, or go to the library. We know what knowledge lies in other brains or books, and what lies in our heads. But with the easy ways to get information, we get a wrong idea about what we truly know.
Dependency (依赖) on a network also increases the possibility of being harmed easily. The basic idea is, if the things we depend on stop working, we are in trouble. Imagine this, if the systems we depend on for health, like food and energy, stop working, it will cause serious problems for everyone. Without food we get hungry; without energy we feel cold. The greatest danger to a civilization is that if it loses its memory, it could enter a dark age.
We leave old skills behind to learn new ones. As memories disappear, we can become strangers to our own history.
27. Which is the best sentence for "______"?
A. Maybe it doesn't matter at all.
B. Machines decide on the correct answer.
C. Researchers have realized several problems.
D. Research shows that machines are smarter than humans.
28. According to this passage, which of the following is TRUE?
A. Depending on networks makes our lives safer and easier.
B. Easier ways to get knowledge help humans create better future.
C. Young scientists think remembering facts is the most important skill for students.
D. Smart machines are not always objective because they depend on human decisions.
29. Which is the best structure for the passage?
A. B. C. D.
30. What's the writer's main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To celebrate the progress of smart machines.
B. To discuss problems of communicating with machines.
C. To tell us the risk of depending on machines to remember.
D. To show the importance of improving problem-solving ability.
