He invented a smart safety light that turns on when someone approaches and off seconds after they leave. It’s now used in many communities, helping thousands of people stay safer. A 15-year-old student, inspired by space programs, built a detailed model of a space research station. In his free time, he makes posters to explain how space science benefits our daily lives and dreams of joining real space studies one day. Last year, a school music team chose not to perform for competitions or prizes. Instead, they played gentle, comforting music for sick children in a nearby hospital. Seeing the children smile filled them with warmth and pride. One student joined a long-distance running race last term. Though not the fastest and unsure he’d finish, he refused to give up. He ran steadily and crossed the finish line. He won no prize, but earned deep respect from classmates and teachers. These stories show that kindness, creativity, and courage, no matter one’s age or skill, can truly make a difference. They remind us that kindness and courage make the world more beautiful.

The children ran away in terror (恐惧), as fast as they could. “My garden is my garden, ” he said. “Only I can play here. ” So he built a high wall around it and put up a sign.
After that, spring came everywhere, but in the Giant’s garden, it was still winter. Birds did not sing, and trees did not flower. Only the cold north wind and snow visited. The Giant felt sad. He wondered why spring never came.
One morning, he heard a bird singing beautifully. He looked out and saw children coming through a small hole in the wall. They sat in the trees, and where each child sat, the tree grew many flowers. Birds flew and sang happily. Only in one corner was it still winter. There, a little boy cried because he was too small to climb a tree.
The Giant felt sorry. “How selfish I was!” he said. “Now I understand. ” He went down, gently helped the boy into the tree, and then knocked down the wall. “This garden is yours now, children, ” he said. Autonomous driving (自动驾驶) is becoming an important part of future transportation, but it still faces many challenges in technology and infrastructure (基础建设).
A report from China Youth Daily explains that there are two main types of self⁃driving systems today: those that use cameras and those that use LiDAR (激光雷达). Each system has its own problems. For example, Tesla’s system uses cameras and deep learning, without high⁃precision (高精度的) maps. It works well in clear weather but has trouble in bad conditions like heavy rain or fog. Other companies, like Xiaopeng Motors, use LiDAR technology, but it is expensive, making it hard to use widely.
Another problem is keeping the cars safe from hackers (黑客). Hackers can break into the car’s system and take control of it using the internet. This could cause accidents or lead to the hackers asking for money.
Self⁃driving cars can have problems when something unexpected happens. For example, if a traffic light stops working, the car might not know what to do because it is only trained to follow the light. Also, if a child runs into the street, the car needs to react fast, but sometimes its sensors (感应器) might not see the child in time.
Besides these technical problems, the infrastructure for autonomous driving is still in the early stages of exploration, said the BBC. Many cities don’t have a clear plan for their traffic systems. Self⁃driving cars need to share data quickly and have powerful computers. Making cars and roads work together needs a lot of teamwork. But right now, many cities don’t have the technology to send data fast enough.
“Even though self⁃driving cars perform as well as or even better than humans in some situations, it will still take time before they can be widely used, ” said Zhang Yongwei, an electric vehicle expert.
23. Why isn’t LiDAR technology widely used?
A. It is not safe enough. B. It needs high⁃precision maps.
C. It is very expensive. D. It is still under development.
24. What does Paragraph 3 say about self⁃driving cars?
A. They don’t break down often.
B. They can protect themselves from hackers.
C. They can be hacked and controlled.
D. They can deal with accidents by themselves.
25. Why is the current infrastructure a problem for using self⁃driving cars?
A. Not all roads in the cities have traffic lights.
B. Data is not shared quickly enough to meet needs.
C. There are not enough computers to process data.
D. Self⁃driving cars can only run on straight roads.
26. How does Zhang Yongwei see the future of self⁃driving cars?
A. They will never perform as well as human drivers.
B. They will soon replace all human⁃driven cars.
C. They will cause many serious social problems.
D. They will require more time for development.
【答案】23. C 24. C 25. B 26. D

D
①If you wake up early, you might hear birds singing outside your window. This early morning concert is called the dawn chorus. Birds start singing as early as 4:00 a.m., and they keep singing for a few hours. But have you ever wondered why birds sing so early in the morning?
②Two of the reasons are to find a mate (配偶) and to warn other birds to stay away from their space. They sing loudly to make sure their messages are heard. They choose the early morning to communicate these important messages because the low visibility makes it hard to do other bird activities, like looking for food. Since they can’t see well enough to search for breakfast, they use this quiet time to sing instead.
③ ▲ By singing loudly and clearly, they tell other birds that they survived the night and that they are strong enough in the wild. A bird that sings loudly is showing it would make a good partner because it has made it through the dangers of the night.
④Like a good recording studio (录音棚), the early morning hours also help make birds’ sounds clearer thanks to the cooler, drier air. Because each bird has their own special sound, that clarity (清晰) helps other birds know them more easily.
⑤There used to be a common theory that birds sang so much in the mornings because the sounds could travel farther, but researchers at the University of Western Ontario showed it was not true in 2003. They tested this by playing birdsong at different times and found that the morning air just makes the songs more consistent (连贯的).
⑥Birds only have so much energy to sing, so they choose the best time when their voices can be heard clearly. Singing at dawn is like performing on the best stage, and it’s the perfect way for birds to start their day.
27. What can you learn from Paragraph 1?
A. Birds’ dawn chorus usually ends at 4:00 a.m. every day.
B. The dawn chorus is the birds’ singing in the early morning.
C. People always feel angry at the birds’ early morning singing.
D. Birds sing outside windows only when people wake up early.
28. What does the underlined word “visibility” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. How far birds can fly. B. How fast birds can fly.
C. How many things can be touched. D. How clearly objects can be seen.
29. Which of the following can be put into “ ▲ ”?
A. They sing so early to show they are clever.
B. Another reason is to show off how strong they are.
C. The dangers of the night make birds start singing early.
D. What’s more, singing early helps birds stay away from danger.
30. What’s the correct structure of the passage?
A. ①/②/③④⑤/⑥ B. ①/②③④/⑤⑥
C. ①②③④⑤/⑥ D. ①/②③④⑤/⑥

Every afternoon after school, children played happily in the Giant’s (巨人的) garden. It was a lovely garden with soft green grass, and twelve peach trees full of pink and white flowers. Birds sang sweetly in the branches (树枝).
The Giant was away visiting a friend for seven years. When he came back, he saw children playing in his garden. “What are you doing here?” he shouted angrily.
From that day, the garden was always full of children’s laughter, and spring stayed there forever.

①/②③④/⑤⑥
C. ①②③④⑤/⑥ D. ①/②③④⑤/⑥
