Dino’s Barbershop in Kingston has been open for more than 30 years. It was established by Dino Bartzis, a well-known and beloved barber in Kingston’s Greek community. Dino was known for his friendly manners and treating customers like his family. He was well-respected in Kingston’s Greek community and beyond.
Sadly, Dino passed away in July 2021, but his legacy (遗产) continues on with his son, Tony, with other barbers continuing his tradition. Tony wasn’t always a barber. He had previously worked in a field completely unrelated to barbering. Barbering was totally new for Tony, but after losing his father, he felt a strong pull to step in and carry on what his father had built.
While still grieving (悲伤) the sudden loss of his father, Tony knew the importance of his dad’s barbershop to Kingston’s Greek community and that he had to keep the shop open, not only for the people who have relied on the barbershop for great friendly haircuts, but for himself, his family and for his dad’s legacy to be carried on.
So Tony acted quickly, signing up for a barbering program in Ottawa. It was a fast-paced experience, but he was fully committed to learning the craft properly and getting the certificates he needed to reopen the barbershop. At the same time, he gave the barbershop a slightly more modern look to help attract the newer generations of customers as well.
During the first week of 2023, Tony reopened Dino’s Barbershop, with the same amazing staff, and collectively they have maintained the same family-orientated and welcoming environment that Dino’s Barbershop has always been known for. Tony’s only wish is that his father could be present to witness his shop today and see the diverse customers that visit and call it home. Dino would be particularly proud that his legacy continues to serve and inspire the next generation. Dino’s Barbershop is more than just a place for haircuts; it’s a place where people connect, build relationships and share special moments every day.
4. What motivated Tony to take over his father’s barbershop?
A. His commitment to the community service. B. His financial pressure after losing his job.
C. His desire to modernize traditional craft. D. His passion for barbering since childhood.
5. What did Tony’s preparations to reopen the barbershop involve?
A. New staff and a price adjustment. B. Redecoration and skill certificates.
C. Hairstyle diversity and online booking. D. Shop expansion and customer surveys.
6. What is a special aspect about Dino’s Barbershop?
A. It charges the lowest in the community. B. It mainly serves the elderly people.
C. It creates a family-like community space. D. It hires professional barbers from abroad.
7. What is the text mainly about?
A. Greek community in Kingston. B. Competition between barbershops.
C. Skills training in modern barbering. D. A son continuing his father’s legacy.

What if we could fight farm weeds with a precise (精确的) strike instead of blanket chemicals? This vision is now becoming a reality in the farmlands of China. The Hg LaserWeeder, a new machine developed by Huagong Tech, marks a major breakthrough in precision agriculture by making targeted weed control a practical reality.
This advancement responds directly to the constant problems linked with traditional farming. Decades of heavy reliance on chemical herbicides (除草剂) have caused significant environmental harm, including soil degradation and water pollution. For China, a nation with vast agricultural lands, finding a sustainable solution is a matter of particular urgency.
So, how does this “robot farmer” work? At its core, it combines artificial intelligence with advanced light technology. Its AI-powered visual system, trained on a vast database of plant images, acts as a smart “eye” that can distinguish weeds from crops in milliseconds. Once a weed is spotted, the robot delivers a precise laser beam (激光束) to each weed’s growth center, destroying key cells and causing the plant to die naturally, all without harming the surrounding crops or the soil.
The advantages of this approach are considerable. In terms of efficiency, an advanced model equipped with 32 laser heads can destroy up to 320,000 weeds per hour, which is four to eight times more efficient than traditional methods. Through continuous operation, it achieves a weed control rate of over 95%, far outperforming hand weeding and obviating the need for this back-breaking task. Ecologically, it significantly reduces the use of chemicals, thereby cutting off a primary source of agricultural pollution.
The introduction of this technology is part of a broader shift toward automated and sustainable agriculture in China and abroad. As farms worldwide seek to enhance efficiency while minimizing environmental impact, robotic solutions like the Hg LaserWeeder are likely to become increasingly common. This technology signals a move toward precision agriculture, where data-driven tools enable farmers to manage their crops with greater accuracy and less dependence on chemicals, pointing the way for a cleaner, more efficient future for farming.
8. What is the main factor behind the development of the Hg LaserWeeder?
A. The shortage of clean water. B. The vast farmlands in China.
C. The pollution from chemicals. D. The failing power of herbicides.
9. What is the main role of the visual system in the Hg LaserWeeder?
A. To deliver laser beams. B. To protect nearby crops.
C. To take plant images. D. To identify target weeds.
10. What does the underlined word “obviating” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Facing. B. Postponing. C. Sharing. D. Removing.
11. What can we infer about future agriculture from the last paragraph?
A. It will rely more on smart robotic tools. B. It will witness more global cooperation.
C. It will prioritize environment over output. D. It will improve the social status of farmers.
D
From an early age, we tend to divide ourselves and others into opposing groups — such as “smart vs. dumb” in school or “rich vs. poor” in adulthood. This thinking is often used for simpler identification, but it carries significant risks.
Once we assign people or ourselves to a group, several psychological effects take hold. First of all, the group members assume an identity. A label is placed on them, which over time achieves a level of permanency. For example, if you decide yourself as belonging to the “I’m really not creative” group, you tend to view yourself as primarily and permanently uncreative. The longer this belief lasts, the harder it is to change.
Moreover, groups provide us with a false sense of comfort. By joining the “I’m not creative” group, we also conveniently protect ourselves from moving beyond the borders of that group into new and often unfamiliar areas. Like birds that hesitate to leave their cages even when the door is open, we resist the desire to get out of our comfort zone — not because we can’t, but because we won’t. There are not just many like-minded people in the group, but it offers a safe environment to work and play in.
But the problem doesn’t end there. There is a tsunami of books and articles that use language such as the following: “Creative people are individuals like Leonardo, Edison, Picasso, or Einstein who have changed our culture in some important respects” and “Creative people are the ones who get ahead in their jobs, start new businesses, invent products... paint pictures, and make things of beauty.” When reading these statements, we automatically assign ourselves to that “other group,” knowing that we can never measure up.
However, as psychological research has convincingly demonstrated, creativity is not exclusive to a select few; it is a birthright shared by everyone. So, be mindful of what you read. Sometimes, others may be putting you in a box without your knowing.
12. Why do many people refuse to step out of their comfort zone according to paragraph 3?
A. They are not able to make changes.
B. They feel secure within their own group.
C. They have no chance to explore new areas.
D. They dislike communicating with new people.
13. What can we learn from paragraph 4?
A. Creative people are very few. B. Labels may limit our thoughts.
C. All great people are creative. D. We can match great people easily.
14. What might the author agree with?
A. Creativity belongs to everyone. B. Groups help us know ourselves.
C. We should read more books. D. Labels help us identify others.
15. What can be a suitable title for the passage?
A. Group Identity: Its Hidden Benefits.
B. Age Groups: Key Comparisons.
C. Social Labels: Their Hidden Harm.
D. Creative Thinking: Ways to Develop It.

Lila was a 17-year-old senior student who dreamed of joining her school’s computer team, a group famous for its success in national programming contests. For her, joining the team meant more than just pride — it was a path to a scholarship and a chance to change her family’s future. But the team required a high-quality laptop that cost about $4,000 — something she couldn’t afford. Her family barely made ends meet: her father was still recovering from illness, and her mother worked long hours as a cleaner. Lila wanted to lift some of their burden one day, and the computer team felt like the first step toward that dream.
To save money, she worked part-time at Mr. Owen’s stationery shop, where she was trusted to run the counter alone during lunch breaks. One busy Tuesday noon, Mrs. Pearson hurried in to buy expensive pens and accidentally left her handbag on the counter. After the lunch rush, Lila found it. She opened it, hoping to contact its owner — but when she saw what was inside, her breath caught: $4,000 in cash.
At that moment, her phone rang — it was the computer team coach, reminding her that the final sign-up deadline was only three days away. Her heart beat fast. For a moment, she imagined holding a new laptop in her hands, joining the team, and winning competitions. Then her father’s voice rang in her mind: “Honesty is a promise you make to yourself, even when no one is watching.” The weight of those words pressed against the urge in her heart. She stared at the bag — at what could have been her dream — and felt tears well up. She knew no one would find out if she kept it. But she also knew she wouldn’t be able to look herself in the mirror if she did.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
At last, Lila wiped her eyes and made her choice.

【答案】4. A 5. B 6. C 7. D

【答案】8. C 9. D 10. D 11. A
【解析】

细节理解题。根据第二段“Decades of heavy reliance on chemical herbicides (除草剂) have caused significant environmental harm, including soil degradation and water pollution. For China, a nation with vast agricultural lands, finding a sustainable solution is a matter of particular urgency.(数十年来大量依赖除草剂已经造成严重的环境危害,包括土壤退化和水污染。对于拥有广阔农田的中国来说,找到可持续的解决方案尤为紧迫。)”可知,化学药剂带来的污染是研发该设备的主要原因。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Its AI-powered visual system, trained on a vast database of plant images, acts as a smart “eye” that can distinguish weeds from crops in milliseconds.(它搭载人工智能的视觉系统,基于海量植物图像数据库训练,如同一只智能“眼睛”,能在毫秒内区分杂草和农作物。)”可知,视觉系统的主要作用是识别目标杂草。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段“Through continuous operation, it achieves a weed control rate of over 95%, far outperforming hand weeding and obviating the need for this back-breaking task.(持续作业下,它的除草率超过 95%,效果远优于人工除草,obviating这项繁重的劳作的需求。)” 可知,除草机器人效率极高,省去人工除草这项工作,所以猜测obviating表示“消除,免去”,和removing同义。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“As farms worldwide seek to enhance efficiency while minimizing environmental impact, robotic solutions like the Hg LaserWeeder are likely to become increasingly common.(全球农场都在追求提升效率同时降低环境影响,像Hg激光除草机这类机器人方案很可能会越来越普及。)”可知,未来农业将更多依靠智能机器人工具。
【答案】12. B 13. B 14. A 15. C
【解析】
【导语】文章主要论述了人们习惯将人分门别类并贴标签,分析了这种做法带来的心理危害,强调每个人都有创造力。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Like birds that hesitate to leave their cages even when the door is open, we resist the desire to get out of our comfort zone — not because we can’t, but because we won’t. There are not just many like-minded people in the group, but it offers a safe environment to work and play in.(就像鸟儿即使笼门敞开也犹豫着不愿离开一样,我们抗拒走出舒适区的渴望——不是因为我们做不到,而是因为我们不愿意。这个群体里不仅有许多志同道合的人,而且它提供了一个安全的环境,让人可以工作和娱乐)”可知,许多人拒绝走出舒适区是因为他们觉得自己在群体中很安全。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“There is a tsunami of books and articles that use language such as the following: “Creative people are individuals like Leonardo, Edison, Picasso, or Einstein who have changed our culture in some important respects” and “Creative people are the ones who get ahead in their jobs, start new businesses, invent products... paint pictures, and make things of beauty.” When reading these statements, we automatically assign ourselves to that “other group,” knowing that we can never measure up.(铺天盖地的书籍和文章使用着这样的语言:“有创造力的人是像达·芬奇、爱迪生、毕加索或爱因斯坦那样,在某些重要方面改变了我们文化的人”,以及“有创造力的人是那些在工作中出人头地、创办新企业、发明产品……画画并创造美好事物的人”。读到这些说法时,我们会不由自主地把自己归入“另一类人”,心里明白自己永远无法达到那个标准)”可知,标签可能限制我们的思想。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“However, as psychological research has convincingly demonstrated, creativity is not exclusive to a select few; it is a birthright shared by everyone.(然而,正如心理学研究令人信服地表明的那样,创造力并非少数人所独有;它是每个人与生俱来的权利)”可知,作者认为创造力并非少数人所独有,它是每个人与生俱来的权利,所以会同意“创造力属于每个人”这一表述。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“From an early age, we tend to divide ourselves and others into opposing groups — such as “smart vs. dumb” in school or “rich vs. poor” in adulthood. This thinking is often used for simpler identification, but it carries significant risks.(从很小的时候起,我们就倾向于把自己和他人分成对立的群体——比如学校里的“聪明与愚蠢”,成年后的“富有与贫穷”。这种思维通常用于更简便的识别归类,但它伴随着重大风险)”以及最后一段中“So, be mindful of what you read. Sometimes, others may be putting you in a box without your knowing.(所以,要注意你读到的东西。有时,别人可能会在你不知情的情况下给你贴上固定标签)”可知,文章主要论述了社会标签带来的隐藏危害,C项“Social Labels: Their Hidden Harm(社会标签:其隐藏的危害)”最能概括文章内容,最适合做文章标题。

【答案】例文
At last, Lila wiped her eyes and made her choice. She carefully placed the handbag on the counter and told Mr. Owen exactly what had happened. Mr. Owen immediately called Mrs. Pearson to explain Lila’s honesty. When Mrs. Pearson arrived at the shop, Lila handed her the bag, her hands trembling slightly. Mrs. Pearson’s eyes softened as she smiled warmly. “It takes real courage to do the right thing, especially when it’s not easy,” she said. Lila felt a surge of relief and pride, knowing that her honesty had preserved her integrity and earned the respect of someone she admired.
A few days later, Mrs. Pearson appeared at the school gate with a box. Inside was a brand-new laptop, carefully wrapped, along with a note: “Your honesty and courage deserve recognition. I hope this helps you pursue your dreams.” Lila’s eyes welled up with tears of gratitude as she realized that staying true to her values had not only kept her conscience clear but had also opened the door to the very opportunity she had longed for.
