Every April I am troubled by the same concern that spring might not occur this year. The landscape looks dull, with hills, sky and forest appearing grey. My spirits ebb, as they did during an April snowfall when I first came to Maine. “Just wait,” a neighbour advised. “You’ll wake up one morning and spring will just be here.”
And look, on 3 May that year I awoke to a green so amazing as to be almost electric, as if spring were simply a matter of flipping a switch. Hills, sky, and forest revealed their purples, blues, and greens. Leaves had unfolded and daffodils were fighting their way heavenward.
Then there was the old apple tree. It sits on an undeveloped lot in my neighbourhood. It belongs to no one and therefore to everyone. The tree’s dark twisted branches stretch out in unpruned abandon. Each spring it blossoms so freely that the air becomes filled with the scent of apple.
Until last year, I thought I was the only one aware of this tree. And then one day, in a bit of spring madness, I set out to remove a few disorderly branches. No sooner had I arrived under the tree than neighbours opened their windows and stepped onto their porches. These were people I barely knew and seldom spoke to, but it was as if I had come uninvited into their personal gardens.
My mobile-home neighbour was the first to speak. “You’re not cutting it down, are you?” she asked anxiously. Another neighbour frowned as I cut off a branch. “Don’t kill it, now,” he warned. Soon, half the neighbourhood had joined me under the apple tree. It struck me that I had lived there for five years and only now was learning these people’s names, what they did for a living, and how they passed the winter. It was as if the old apple tree was gathering us under its branches for the purpose of both acquaintanceship and shared wonder. I couldn’t help recalling Robert Frost’s words:
The trees that have it in their pent-up buds
To darken nature and be summer woods
One thaw (解冻) led to another. Just the other day, I saw one of my neighbours at the local store. He remarked how this recent winter had been especially long and complained of not having seen or spoken at length to anyone in our neighbourhood. And then, he looked at me and said, “We need to prune that apple tree again.”

Next time you are struggling with the crossword, try putting the kettle on. Drinking a cup of tea can improve creativity, a study suggests.
Researchers gave participants either tea or water and then asked them to complete a word association game, which was used to measure a form of creativity known as convergent thinking (聚合思维).
In the game, the participants were given sets of words such as “same, tennis, head” and asked to find a meaningful link between them. After analyzing the results in a way that ruled out the potential effects of a person’s intelligence and language ability, the researchers found those who drank the tea performed significantly better in the word association game. The tea drinkers scored an average of 13.89 in the game compared with 12.94 for water drinkers.
The researchers said it was not clear why tea has this beneficial effect. Tea contains special components, which can improve attention, but the participants in the study drank only a small amount of tea — 90 ml, on average — and carried out the tests very soon after consuming it, meaning any effect would have been ignored. This result showed the tea drinking event itself — rather than the biological components of tea — played a positive role, the researchers said.
Previous research has found that people tend to associate tea drinking with a specific set of personality traits(特征), such as smart, creative, elegant, confident, and stable. It may be that when participants are stimulated (刺激) by tea, the mental representation of a tea drinker is also activated, and they unconsciously think that they should be smarter and more creative.
32.What did the participants have to do in the study?
A.Pair the words with each other.
B.Guess the meaning of the words.
C.Find a connection between the words.
D.Tell the differences among the words.
33.What helped a participant get a higher score by the researchers?
A.The participant’s intelligence.
B.The action of drinking tea itself.
C.The participant’s language ability.
D.The biological components of tea.
34.What can be inferred from the previous research?
A.Drinking tea makes people more active.
B.Drinking tea is popular among the youth.
C.People tend to drink tea more than before.
D.People drinking tea are often thought smart.
35.Which of the following can be the best title of the text?
A.Drinking Tea Is Good for Health
B.Drinking Tea Is A Popular Trend
C.Drinking Tea Makes for Creativity
D.Drinking Tea Matters A Lot in Life

Experience-Based Education
Everyone is familiar with traditional education. You sit in a class and a teacher teaches. This is an important part of development. But at some point, every individual has to take charge of their own education. To do this, one must look at the root of learning. 36
Basically, unfamiliar experiences usually add more value than experiences that are familiar. 37 .And you are in a better state to learn something new. Honestly, someone who never experiences the same thing twice will never have a chance to benefit from anything learned. However, new experiences are generally what make people interested and push them to grow.
High school is a new experience. College is a new experience. 38 It is not that you won’t learn anything else, but that the environment is so familiar. As a result, you can easily become less aware of your experience and not learn as much.
To solve this, an individual needs to introduce new experiences into their life. You may spend a summer in a different part of the country or learn a new language through trial and error. You can also go to a drive-in movie (or some other entertainment events that are new to you). 39
These types of experiences often result in very little “book knowledge”. Instead, they will often provide you with a better understanding of yourself as you experience your reaction to different situations. They will also provide you with a better understanding of others. 40
Becoming a well-rounded human isn’t something that happens by accident. You can spend your entire lifetime developing your potential.
A.Has education changed so much in the last decade?
B.However, at some point traditional education becomes repetitive.
C.Those new experiences may not lead to great personal development.
D.It can be valuable for you to work effectively with different people.
E.These are all things that can stretch and expand your experiences in life.
F.This is because unfamiliar experiences require much more of our attention.
G.What makes some experiences add great value to our lives while other experiences do not?

Armed with advanced tools, a team of “tree doctors” navigates through the crowds in a park to reach its latest patient — an old tree 56 has stood the test of time for over 1,700 years.

第二节(满分25分)
67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When my little brother Tom was four, Mom said something like “I’d give anything to have a few more hours in the day.” And Tom said, “Why don’t we buy a bigger clock?” If time worked that way, I could have used an extra-big clock last week!
Our teacher had asked us to make an art project showing how plants eat, “I can’t believe we only have two nights to finish it,” Noah said with a sigh. “I have no idea how I’ll get mine done.”
I didn’t say anything. Not because I was nervous—I wasn’t nervous at all. 1 love art projects! In fact, I was so relaxed that I didn’t work on the project at all on Monday night. I planned to start the minute I got home from baseball practice on Tuesday. But there was just one thing.
I forgot baseball would run later than usual because it was the day of Baseball Buddies, which happens every month, and it’s a chance for us older students to practise baseball with the adorable younger kids. The second I got home, I threw the entire craft box (手工盒) onto the kitchen table, took out my “How Plants Eat” paper, and started to work. But just then, the telephone rang.
It was my friend Ollie, who said his grandmother Abuela had just made cookies and wanted to know if I’d come help decorate them. I love decorating cookies, and I love, love, love Abucla’s world-famous Thanksgiving cookies that only happen once a year!
I had no choice. I had to go. Ollie and I put all the star cookies with red jam filling in one group, and all the snowflakes with white cream-cheese filling in another. It was 7 o'clock when I finally got home.1 planned to work on my project right after we ate. But then another interruption hit me.

M: Unfortunately, the report must be submitted by Monday morning. If we wait until Sunday, there won’t be enough time to analyze the data and finalize the report.
W: I understand the urgency. Here’s an idea — what if I handle all the data analysis tonight after practice? That way, you only need to focus on collecting water and soil samples on Saturday.
M: That’s a great solution! To speed things up, let’s ask Jenny to assist with the fieldwork on Saturday. She’s experienced with sample collection.

【原文】W: Victor, what will you write about for the book report our professor assigned?
M: Oh Catherine, I’m reading a book about European life centuries ago. For example, when it comes to this aspect, people picture grand stone castles with giant towers.
W: True! Castles were homes for the royal family.
M: But have you heard about their kitchens?
W: Kitchens? Weren’t they just part of the main buildings?
M: Actually, no. Kitchens were usually built far from the main buildings.
W: Really? That seems inconvenient.
M: It was not for defence or beauty. Huge cooking fires could spread! Imagine losing a castle to a kitchen fire!
W: Smart thinking! But how did they get fresh ingredients?
M: Each castle had its own garden! Vegetables were picked fresh daily since refrigeration didn’t exist. Besides, a king’s meal wasn’t just vegetables—think of roasted meats, bread, and fancy desserts.
W: That sounds massive! Then a whole kitchen team must have bakers, meat cooks, dessert specialists…
M: Exactly! You’re so smart.

【详解】24.词句猜测题。根据第一段中“Every April I am troubled by the same concern that spring might not occur this year. The landscape looks dull, with hills, sky and forest appearing grey. (每年四月,我都会被同样的担忧所困扰,担心今年春天不会到来。风景看起来单调乏味,山峦、天空和森林都是灰色的。)”以及“as they did during an April snowfall when I first came to Maine. (就像我第一次来到缅因州时四月的降雪一样。)”可知,作者初到缅因州时,四月的景色单调灰暗,甚至还下过雪,这样的景象让作者情绪低落,因此,“My spirits ebb ”指的是“he feels blue (他感到沮丧)”。故选D项。

39.句意:这些都是可以延伸和扩展您的生活经历的事物。根据上文“You may spend a summer in a different part of the country or learn a new language through trial and error. 66.Dear Editor,
Last week, I took part in our school’s one-day study tour to a beautiful new village.
We had a wonderful and meaningful day with rich activities. The activities let us feel the charm of new countryside. Early in the morning, we went to a modern farm where we learned environmentally-friendly farming skills. At noon, we enjoyed tasty local food that was made by villagers. In the afternoon, we walked around the village which has clean roads and beautiful scenery.
This tour was really unforgettable. It not only helped me experience rural life, but also made me see great achievements of rural revitalization.
Yours,
Li Hua

67. Just as I was about to start, Dad said, “Joanna, it’s your turn to do the dishes.” What Dad said was a hammer blow to me, leaving me into deeper anxiety. However, that was one of our family rules, so I had to do the dishes reluctantly. The clinking of dishes were disquieting sounds from hell to me, reminding me that the clock was ticking second by second. After I threw the last dish into the cabinet, I rushed into my bedroom, only to find that the hour hand had moved past ten. Without much time left, I finished the assignment in a hurry. The next day, I handed in it nervously.
Looking at the big “F” on my paper, I started to reflect on what I had done these days. My life seemed in a mess these days, arising from my loose attitude and chaotic schedule. My energy was segmented and occupied by some trivial matters which had nothing to do with my project. Out of guilt, I explained to my teacher and promised this would never happen again. After this experience, I eventually comprehended the importance of time, and began to arrange for my schedule with caution. With confidence, I was firmly convinced that I could get a satisfying score in the next assignment.
