Lying in southwest Asia, the Dead Sea is about 80 kilometres long, about 18 kilometres wide and about 400 metres deep. It also has some other names, such as the Salt Sea, the East Sea, or the Sea of the Plain.
Even though it’s called the Dead Sea, it isn’t a sea at all! It’s a lake. Different from other lakes you might have seen, the Dead Sea is quite a salty lake. In fact, the Dead Sea is one of the saltiest bodies of water in the world. The Dead Sea is so salty that nothing can live in it. That’s why it’s called the Dead Sea. And the Dead Sea stays quite salty because it gets only a little rain, and so little fresh water gets into the Dead Sea each year.
Don’t let the name of the Dead Sea make you feel scared. The Dead Sea is a wonderful place to visit, and many people go to the Dead Sea each year on holiday. One interesting thing is that anyone can float in the Dead Sea. So if you walk on the beach of the Dead Sea on a warm day, perhaps you can see many people floating in its waters. You might even see many of them reading books or magazines!
51. The Dead Sea is about 80 kilometres long and 400 metres wide.

53. Nothing can live in the Dead Sea because it is too salty.

The Sahara is not all sand. There are also mountains, hills and plateaus (高原). The highest mountain in the Sahara is Emi Koussi. It is 3,415 meters high.
The weather in the Sahara is very different from day to night. During the day, the temperature can be over 50℃. But at night, it can fall to below zero.
There is little rain in the Sahara. But some plants can still live there. They have deep roots (根) to get water from underground. Some animals can live in the Sahara, too. For example, camels can live without water for a long time.
Now more and more people come to visit the Sahara. They can ride camels and enjoy the beautiful desert scenery.

Many people have hobbies like reading, painting or playing sport. But for 14-year-old Tom Wilson, his hobby is quite different. He likes to repair old bicycles and give them to children who need them.
Tom’s interest in repairing bicycles began when he was very young. His father taught him how to fix a flat tire (瘪胎) when he was only six. “I loved taking things apart and putting them back together,” Tom said. “It was like solving a puzzle. And it can help me relax after a day’s studying.”
Last year, Tom saw a boy walk to school every day while other kids rode bikes. He learned that the boy’s family was too poor to buy a bicycle. Tom decided to help. He found an old, broken bike in his garage (车库) and spent two weeks repairing it. He cleaned it, painted it and made it look like new. When he gave the bike to the boy, the smile on the boy’s face was unforgettable.
Since then, Tom has repaired over twenty bicycles. He gets old bikes from neighbours, friends and even strangers. Local shops sometimes give him free tools and parts. Tom works on the bikes in his free time — after school and at weekends.
“It takes time and patience,” Tom said. “But when I see a kid ride on a bike that I fixed, I feel so gratified. It’s the best feeling in the world.”
Tom’s parents allow him to do so. His mother said, “He spends hours in the garage, but we don’t mind. He’s not just having fun — he’s making a difference.”

I call on everyone to develop healthy habits. Let’s start with three key points.
For exercise habits, you can play basketball or run for 20 minutes every day. You’d better keep doing it. And exercise can help you stay healthy and prevent illness. For eating habits, try to eat more vegetables and fruit, and don’t eat too much sweet food or junk food. Sleeping habits are important too. Go to bed before 10 p.m. and wake up early. Getting enough sleep keeps you energetic.
If you follow these, you’ll keep fit and feel happier!
That’s all. Thank you.
