If you come next year, I'll take you to the wetland park and teach you to take photos of the birds. I'm sure you'll like it here.
Looking forward to your reply.

The old man came to the hut every morning at six. He carried a wooden box of tools and a small chair, set them down in the corner and began to __16__. Click, click, click. The sound was as regular as a clock.
I was twelve that summer, staying with my grandmother in the village. There was nothing much to do, so I often sat on the step and watched him. He was repairing a broken clock — one of more than sixty that filled the shelves of his hut.
“Where do they all come from?” I asked one day.
“People bring them,” he said without looking up. “Every clock has its own __17__. Some are quick, some are slow. Some stop at night. You cannot __18__ them all in the same way.”
I began to visit him every morning. First I only watched. Then he let me __19__ the tiny screws. Later he taught me how to clean the gears with a soft brush. I was __20__ at first and broke a spring. I thought he would be angry, but he only said, “Now you know how __21__ a spring is.”
One afternoon a woman came in with a small clock. “It was my father's,” she said. “It hasn't worked for twenty years, but I can't __22__ it away.” The old man opened the back and looked inside for a long while. “It can be saved,” he said at last. The woman's eyes lit up.
That evening I asked him __23__ he didn't just throw the broken ones away. He put down his tools and said, “A clock is not only a machine. It __24__ somebody's time. When a person brings a clock to me, he is not asking me to fix a machine. He is asking me to give back a piece of his __25__.”
I left the village at the end of August. Before I got on the bus, the old man gave me a small alarm clock. “It still works,” he said. “But it is a little slow — five minutes a day. You will have to __26__ it every week.”
The clock stands on my desk now. Every morning it rings five minutes late, and I smile. It has taught me something that no textbook could: __27__ things take time, and so do people. When something is __28__, don't be too quick to throw it away. Give it a little more time, and give it a little more __29__.
Last month I wrote to the old man. I told him I had joined a repair club at school, and that I had fixed my first clock __30__. I like to think that somewhere in that little hut, he is smiling too.

Borrow, Don't Buy — The Tool Library on Red Stone Street
Need a drill (电钻) for one small job? Need a tent for one weekend? Don't buy it. Borrow it.
How it works
· Join for 30 yuan a year. Then borrow any tool you need.
· Each tool can be kept for 7 days. If you need it longer, call us and we will keep it for you.
· Bring it back clean and in good condition. Late return costs 2 yuan a day.
What we have
· Around the house: drills, ladders, paint brushes
· In the garden: spades, garden hoses, a small lawn mower (割草机)

Why we started it
· Most tools are used only two or three times a year. Many people buy a drill, use it once and put it away for years.
· We now have more than 300 members. Last year they borrowed tools 4,200 times — and bought almost nothing new.
Free classes
· Every Saturday at 2 p.m., a volunteer teaches one simple skill: changing a tap, fixing a bike, painting a wall.
· Classes are free for members. Bring your own tools if you have them.
Address: 18 Red Stone Street (next to the post office). Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 9 a.m.—6 p.m. Closed on Mondays. Tel: 8842-6719.

The Girl Who Painted the Wind
Nobody in Class 3 could remember when Duo Duo started drawing on the last page of her notebooks. She never showed her pictures to anyone. During breaks, while others ran to the playground, she stayed at her desk with a pencil.
Her art teacher, Mr. Gao, once looked over her shoulder. “What is this?” he asked.
“The wind,” said Duo Duo. Mr. Gao looked again. The page was covered with long, thin lines, some dark, some light, curling around a tree. She painted things nobody could see.
“You should enter the city art competition,” he said. The theme was Our School. Duo Duo shook her head. “Everyone will draw the building,” she said. “And mine doesn't look like anything.”
But she entered. On the day of the judging (评审), more than two hundred pictures were hung in the hall: buildings, flagpoles, basketball courts. Duo Duo's picture was small and pale, and at first nobody stopped in front of it.
Then an old judge came back to it for the third time. “What is this?” he asked the girl standing nearby.
“The wind in the trees behind our school,” she said quietly. “In spring it is warm and slow. In winter it is cold and fast. I drew the winter one.”
The judge was silent for a moment. Then he said, “Everyone here has drawn what the school looks like. You have drawn what the school feels like.”
Duo Duo's picture won second prize. More important, the school asked her to paint a large picture for the library wall. It is still there: thin lines curling around a tree, and, if you look closely, a small girl sitting under it with a pencil in her hand.
36. What did Duo Duo usually do during breaks?
A. She ran to the playground. B. She stayed at her desk and drew.
C. She read books in the library. D. She practised painting with Mr. Gao.
37. Why did Duo Duo shake her head at first?
A. She had no time to take part. B. She was afraid of the judges.
C. She did not like the theme of the competition. D. She thought her picture did not look like anything.
38. What did the old judge think of Duo Duo's picture?
A. It was too small to see. B. It was the same as the other pictures.
C. It showed what the school felt like. D. It was not finished.
(C)
Why Do We Yawn?
You are sitting in class. The teacher is talking about something important. Suddenly your mouth opens wide, your eyes close, and you let out a long breath. You have yawned (打哈欠) — and now the person beside you is yawning too.
For a long time, people believed that we yawn because our bodies need more oxygen. But studies have not supported this idea. When scientists gave people more oxygen, they did not yawn less.
A newer idea is that yawning helps cool the brain. The brain works best when it is slightly cooler than the rest of the body. When we are tired or have been thinking hard, the brain gets warmer. A deep yawn pulls cool air into the mouth and brings blood to the head, which may help the brain cool down. This may be why we yawn more when we are tired, and why we yawn less in cold weather.
Why is yawning contagious (有传染性的)? If you see someone yawn, you may yawn too. Scientists think this has something to do with empathy — the ability to understand how others feel. In one study, children who were better at understanding other people's feelings yawned more often when they saw someone else yawn. Yawning may be a quiet way of saying, “I am like you.”
So the next time you yawn in class, don't feel bad. Your brain may simply be trying to wake up. And if the whole class starts yawning, you can tell your teacher that you are all being very friendly.
39. What did people once think caused yawning?
A. A need for more oxygen. B. A need for more sleep.
C. A drop in body temperature. D. A wish to be friendly.
40. According to the newer idea, yawning may ____.
A. make the brain warmer B. slow down the heart
C. help us breathe more slowly D. help the brain cool down
41. What does the underlined word “contagious” mean?
A. Happening only at night. B. Spreading from person to person.
C. Lasting for a long time. D. Making people feel tired.
(D)
Should School Start Later?
In many middle schools, the first class begins at 7:50. Students often get up before six to catch the bus. Is this too early? Some schools in other countries have moved their start time to 8:30, and the results have been surprising.
Doctors say that a teenager needs around nine hours of sleep each night. But during the teenage years, the body's clock naturally moves later: most teenagers cannot fall asleep before eleven, even if they go to bed early. If they must get up at six, they lose two hours of sleep every night. Tired students find it hard to pay attention, and they catch colds more easily.
In one city, several schools started at 8:30 for a year. Students slept almost an hour more each night. Teachers reported that students were more awake in the morning, and the number of students who arrived late dropped by a quarter. Grades in the first class improved.
Not everyone agrees, though. Many parents leave for work at seven and cannot take their children to school later. Buses are shared by several schools, so changing one school's time affects all of them. Sports teams also need time after school, and a later start means a later finish.
Perhaps the answer is not a simple yes or no. Some schools have kept the early start but moved difficult subjects to the afternoon, when students are more awake. Others open the library and playground early so that students who arrive early have a quiet place to sit. Small changes like these may help as much as a big one.
42. How long should teenagers sleep each night according to doctors?
A. Seven hours. B. Eight hours. C. Nine hours. D. Eleven hours.
43. What happened in the schools that started at 8:30?
A. Fewer students were late. B. Students slept less than before.
C. Grades in every subject went down. D. Teachers had more work to do.
44. Why do some people disagree with a later start?
A. Students would have no time for sports at all. B. Many parents leave for work before seven.
C. Schools would need to buy more buses. D. Teenagers would go to bed even later.
45. What do some schools do to help students who arrive early?
A. They open the library and playground early. B. They give them an extra class.
C. They send them home again. D. They ask them to wait outside the gate.
四、阅读表达(本题共5小题,每小题2分,共10分)
阅读下面短文,根据各题要求作答。
Every Saturday morning, 13-year-old Liu Yichen puts on a blue apron (围裙) and stands behind a small table at the entrance of the community centre. On the table there are three big boxes: one for old batteries, one for broken chargers, and one for used bulbs (灯泡).
Liu started this “little box” project two years ago. One day he read that a single battery can pollute a whole swimming pool of water. He looked around his home and found a drawer full of dead batteries. “We threw them into the rubbish bin without thinking,” he says. “I wanted to do something.”
At first, only a few neighbours came. Liu made a small sign with the words “Old batteries can be dangerous, but they can also be useful”. He also drew a simple picture showing what happens when batteries get into the soil. Slowly, more people stopped by. Last month, he collected 1,200 batteries, and a recycling company took them away for free.
The project has changed more than the rubbish. Liu's father now keeps old batteries in a jar instead of throwing them away. A neighbour who once said “One boy can't change anything” now helps Liu every Saturday.
“I'm not saving the world,” Liu says with a smile. “I'm just making one small corner of it a little cleaner. If every street had a boy like me, that would be a lot of corners.”
46. Every Saturday morning, Liu Yichen works at the entrance of the ________ ________.
