61.Dear Chris,
Glad to hear you’re participating in the World Earth Day poster contest! Between the two versions, I highly recommend the first one, “There is no Planet B.”
I prefer this design for two main reasons. Visually, the poster features a crying and sweating Earth, with factory chimneys emitting toxic smoke on its top. It vividly highlights the severe environmental crises we are facing, such as global warming and air pollution. More importantly, the slogan itself is brilliant. By cleverly playing on the phrase “Plan B”, it sends a powerful warning to the public: our planet is irreplaceable, and we have no backup home to escape to. Therefore, we must stop the destruction before it’s too late.
I believe this thought-provoking poster will surely leave a lasting impression on the judges. Best of luck!
Yours,
Li Hua

“It’s as easy as learning to ride a bike.” I heard that phrase growing up. My parents said it when teaching me to swim, and again at eighteen when I learned to drive. They knew the saying held no truth for me. Now, at twenty, I swim and drive like anyone else. Yet I still cannot ride a bike.
In my graduating year of college, I grew determined to cross this off my bucket list. I knew exactly who to ask — the same man who had tried to teach me when I was nine.
“Well, it’s about time.” my father said, amused. On the drive home, we made a simple plan: practice on the grass at the weekend.
At home, my mother joked, “I’m sure this will turn out better than your last attempt.” I laughed, but later, standing in the shower, the memory flooded back.
I was nine. My dad decided I would learn to ride. He pulled my mother’s old bicycle from the garage. I sat on it, small hands gripping the handlebars. He placed his palm against my back, and I made him promise not to let go until I gave permission. Soon we were moving. “There you go!” he shouted from behind — he had released his hold. I tumbled into stinging nettles (荨麻草), my skin breaking out in burning rashes. Lying in the bathtub afterward, I begged him tearfully never to make me get on a bike again. He promised.
Now, eleven years later, standing in that same bathtub, my skin itched at the recollection. Doubt emerged, but eventually my nerves settled.
My dad uncovered my mother’s bicycle again — her 18th birthday gift from 1988. Twenty-seven years later, it was destined to teach me what I had failed to learn. We tried the grass first, but the soft ground and under-inflated (胎压不足的) tires defeated us. We moved to the street. I mounted again. My dad placed his hand on my back. I pushed off and leaned sharply left. I tried repeatedly, each failure deepening my frustration. A fear of falling now weighed on me, a fear so strong I hadn’t felt before.
“It’s all in your head,” my father said. “You’re always trapped inside your thoughts. Let’s do this.”
He pushed me forward. I began to pedal, his hand steadying me. He ran alongside, refusing to let go.
“I’m ready for you to let go,” I announced.
His hand lifted. I swung, then surged ahead. I felt weightless, almost free. It was dark, and I was alone on a fragile piece of metal, surrounded by asphalt (柏油路) that would tear my skin apart should I fall. My heart pounded. Yet I did not care about falling. I felt totally alive. And I kept pedaling forward.
41.What happened to the author during the first bike- riding attempt at the age of nine?
A.He refused to get on the bike at the very beginning.
B.His mother’s old bicycle broke down during the practice.
C.He persuaded his father to let him have another try after falling off.

D.The author was thinking about the past too much.
43.How did the author feel when she finally rode the bike alone on the street?
A.Terrified of the asphalt and desperate to stop.
B.Frustrated and unable to balance well.
C.Relieved and unconcerned about the possibility of falling.
D.Excited and relaxed with his father still running behind her.
44.Which of the following words can best describe the author’s father?
A.He was impatient and short- tempered.
B.He was caring and supportive.

C
I watch documentaries, not movies. I read history books, not fiction. I use every free moment to accomplish one of the tasks on my never-ending checklist, and I am completely filled with thoughts of productivity. An hour sleeping is an hour wasted. And like the rest of 21st century America, I like it. But this fixation (固恋) on productivity is increasingly destroying character and transforming men into robots.
New York Times columnist David Brooks warned American University students of this cultural decline in a speech. “We cut off all things spiritual and emotional in a competitive urge to stand out”, he said, “The pressure to succeed professionally, to acquire skills, to do the things you need to do to succeed in an information age economy really became the overwhelming (难以应付的) pressure, and it sort of eclipses the thinking about character and morality.”
Many students happily go to college, viewing it as a next step on their rise to professional achievement. Forcing as many success-building activities into their schedules as they can, they enjoy keeping busy with little sleep. “Today’s outstanding kids are likely to spend their afternoons and weekends shuttling from one skill-improving activity to the next,” Brooks wrote in an article, “We fear failure more than we desire success.”
A century ago, college was about character building. Today, our characters are in decline. We are experts on economics, material things and professional skills. We fail to discuss and understand relationships, emotions and all things spiritual. Philosophers Karl Popper divided the world into two categories: Clocks and Clouds. Clock problems are those that can be taken apart, examined and solved through deductive reasoning Clouds cannot be taken apart. Cloud problems represent whole systems that need to be understood in a different way.
“When we have a Cloud problem, we try to turn into a Clock problem,” Brooks said. And in a reason-centered culture, adding titles to one’s resume becomes a trend. At American University, 85 percent of seniors (and 89 percent of business majors) graduate with at least one practical experience which is often helpful to a student’s future career, but can sometimes draw focus away from academics.
To prevent the death of man’s character, Brooks urges rediscovering our human matures through falling in love. And by love he means love for a task, job, or another person. “Synchronicity (同步性) is key to happiness,” he said. Rather than crazily increasing our long lists of accomplishments, we need to lose ourselves in what we do, and success will come on its own.
46.From Paragraph 1, we can learn that people ________.
A.are controlled by time B.are keen on reading books
C.are eager to achieve more D.are changing their characters
47.According to Brooks’ warning, what is the ultimate consequence of emphasizing professional success?
A.A society driven by emotional intelligence.
B.A stronger focus on academic excellence.
C.A loss of moral and spiritual depth in individuals.
D.An increase in collaborative problem-solving skills.
48.Paragraph 4 is mainly developed by ________.
A.making comparisons B.following the time order
C.giving examples D.analyzing causes
49.The last paragraph mainly tells us that ________.
A.love is more important than focus B.the focus on human natures counts
C.more work contributes to happiness D.success comes from devotion to work.
50.The purpose of this passage is to ________.
A.raise awareness to character building B.stress the importance of productivity
C.warn about the pressure to seek success D.criticize students’ desire for achievements
D
Well, research suggests having a messy desk has its benefits and so does a tidy one. While an extremely neat and organized approach to your working environment may indicate higher levels of generosity and conscientiousness (一丝不苟), taking a more relaxed attitude to tidiness may result in higher levels of creativity. At least, that was the conclusion of a paper published in Psychological Science in 2025.
Psychologist Kathleen Vohs and her team completed a series of experiments in contrasting office environments — one that was clean and ordered and another that was chaotic and seemingly disorganized. Participants in the first environment donated more to charity and were more likely to pick healthy snack options. However, those in the messier environments appeared to think outside the box and contribute to more novel ideas when required to identify new uses for a ping-pong ball.
While orderly environments may encourage people to abide by conventions and play it safe, a messier space may “inspire breaking free of tradition”, inspiring “fresh insights”, Vohs concluded.
“The business world is highly focused on enhancing innovation, but our research implies that these goals could be unintentionally restricted by the minimalist (简约主义的) movement,” she wrote. “While cleaning up certainly has its benefits, clean spaces might be too conventional to let inspiration flow.”
Throughout the years, popular studies have connected a number of characteristics and habits to IQ. Indeed, a dark sense of humour, a sensitivity to loud chewing and a preference for cats over dogs (good news for childless cat ladies!) have all been linked to intelligence and/or creativity. So has being a fitness enthusiast and a couch potato — and, yes, we see the ridiculousness and contradiction. So, with this in mind, it might be worth taking them all with some reservations.
But let’s get back to the state of your desk. If it is on the messier side, you are in good company. Albert Einstein, Steve Jobs, and Mark Twain all preferred their workspaces to remain in a state of productive disorder. So, next time your boss accuses you of having a less-than-tidy work surface, you can point out Vohs’ study to them.
51.What does the 2025 paper suggest?
A.Most workers prefer tidy office environments.
B.Both tidy and messy workspaces have their benefits.
C.Messy workspaces are associated with higher stress.
D.Tidy workspaces guarantee professional success.
52.For participants in Vohs and her team’s experiments, untidiness seems to ______.
A.improve focus on details B.promote healthy eating habits
C.increase charitable giving D.fuel innovative thinking
53.What does the underlined part “abide by” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Miss out. B.Oppose. C.Keep to. D.Correct.
54.What might the author probably recommend readers to do?
A.View study findings guardedly. B.Link study results with daily life.
C.Adopt a sense of humour to boost IQ. D.Pursue a healthier lifestyle.
55.Why does the author write the last paragraph?
A.To compare different working styles.
B.To defend messy working environments.
C.To criticize modern office design trends.
D.To promote Vohs’ research findings.

Life on the street is a constant struggle for homeless people. In extreme weather conditions, that struggle becomes even more difficult. Recently, homeless people across Chicago faced freezing to death if they couldn’t find shelter for the night.
Thankfully, one local woman refused to let that happen. On January 30, 34-year-old Candice Payne, a local managing broker, was lucky enough to have shelter from the dangerous conditions. “It was -20℃, and I knew they were going to be sleeping on ice and I had to do something,” said Payne. Payne started brainstorming different ways she could possibly help. Finally, she decided to see if there were any rooms available at local inns and hotels that she could get to help those stuck on the street.
For Payne, her mission was personal. According to Payne, her husband, Carlos Callahan, had lived on the street at one point in his life. Based on his experience, Payne knew that the homeless people still living on the street desperately needed help and she wanted to step up.
However, when Payne explained what she was trying to do, many of the local hotels refused to allow her to pay for the rooms as they didn’t want homeless people to stay in their rooms. “No one wanted them, but one hotel, the Amber Inn, was nice enough to allow me to buy the rooms,” said Payne.
Payne’s selfless act made news across the country. However, she insisted she had never done it for attention. “I am a regular person,” said Payne, who spent thousands of dollars of her own money to help complete strangers. “It all sounded like a rich person did this, but I’m just a little black girl from the South Side.”
56.What was the biggest problem homeless people had when extreme weather came? (no more than 10 words)
57.Why was Candice Payne determined to help homeless people? (no more than 10 words)

59.What does the underlined part mean in the last paragraph? (no more than 3 words)
60.What do you think of Payne? Please give your reasons. (no more than 20 words)

1.— I’m thinking of dropping the physics course. It’s too difficult.
— ________. It’s a required course for your major.
A.You can’t be serious B.It’s up to you
C.I couldn’t agree more D.It’s just a piece of cake
【答案】A
A. You can’t be serious你不是认真的吧;B. It’s up to you由你决定;C. I couldn’t agree more我完全同意;D. It’s just a piece of cake小菜一碟。
2.I really appreciate ________ when my deskmate shares his effective learning methods with me, as it helps me make steady progress in my study.
A.one B.that C.it D.this
3.To keep a good learning ________, senior high students should arrange their time reasonably and avoid unnecessary distractions.
A.routine B.principle C.custom D.tradition
【答案】A
A. routine常规;B. principle原则;C. custom风俗;D. tradition传统。根据句中“arrange their time reasonably and avoid unnecessary distractions”可知,合理安排时间是为了保持良好的日常学习安排或常规。
4.________ the challenging task ahead of schedule, the team went out to celebrate with a big dinner.
A.Finishing B.Finished C.Having finished D.To finish
5.Facing unexpected challenges, constant reflection helps students adjust their approaches and become more ________ in problem-solving.

D.The author was thinking about the past too much.

A.Terrified of the asphalt and desperate to stop.
B.Frustrated and unable to balance well.
C.Relieved and unconcerned about the possibility of falling.
D.Excited and relaxed with his father still running behind her.
44.Which of the following words can best describe the author’s father?

50.The purpose of this passage is to ________.
A.raise awareness to character building B.stress the importance of productivity
C.warn about the pressure to seek success D.criticize students’ desire for achievements
46.C 47.C 48.A 49.D 50.A
第一段中提到“I use every free moment to accomplish one of the tasks on my never - ending checklist, and I am completely filled with thoughts of productivity. An hour sleeping is an hour wasted(我利用每一个空闲的时间来完成我永无止境的清单上的一个任务,我完全充满了效率的想法。睡觉一小时就是浪费一小时)” 说明人们利用每一刻空闲时间去完成任务,认为睡觉是浪费时间。由此推知,人们渴望取得更多成就。故选C项。
47.细节理解题。根据第二段的句子“The pressure to succeed professionally, to acquire skills, to do the things you need to do to succeed in an information age economy really became the overwhelming (难以应付的) pressure, and it sort of eclipses the thinking about character and morality(在职业上取得成功的压力,获得技能的压力,在信息时代经济中取得成功所需要做的事情的压力,真的变成了压倒性的压力,它在某种程度上掩盖了对品格和道德的思考)”可知,强调职业成功的最终后果是个人在道德和精神层面的深度缺失。故选C项。
根据第四段的内容“A century ago, college was about character building. Today, our characters are in decline. We are experts on economics, material things and professional skills. We fail to discuss and understand relationships, emotions and all things spiritual. Philosophers Karl Popper divided the world into two categories: Clocks and Clouds. Clock problems are those that can be taken apart, examined and solved through deductive reasoning (演绎推理). Clouds cannot be taken apart. Cloud problems represent whole systems that need to be understood in a different way.(一个世纪前,大学教育的核心是品格塑造。 故选A。
最后一段提到“Rather than crazily increasing our long lists of accomplishments, we need to lose ourselves in what we do, and success will come on its own(与其疯狂地堆砌成就清单,不如全身心投入所做之事,成功自会水到渠成)” ,强调我们不应疯狂追求成就清单,而应投入到所做的事情中,成功会自然到来,即成功来自对工作的投入。故选D项。
通读全文,并结合第一段“But this fixation (固恋) on productivity is increasingly destroying character and transforming men into robots.(但这种对生产力的执着正日益摧毁人的性格,把人变成机器人)”,第四段“A century ago, college was about character building. Today, our characters are in decline. (一个世纪前,大学教育的核心是品格塑造。如今,我们的品格却在衰退)”和最后一段“(To prevent the death of man’s character, Brooks urges rediscovering our human matures through falling in love.为了防止人类性格的死亡,布鲁克斯敦促人们通过恋爱来重新发现人类的成熟)”可知,文章通过阐述现代社会人们对生产力的过度追求导致品格下降的现象,最后呼吁人们重新发现人性,投入工作,目的是唤起人们对品格培养的意识。故选A项。
【答案】51.B 52.D 53.C 54.A 55.B
根据第一段中“Well, research suggests having a messy desk has its benefits and so does a tidy one. While an extremely neat and organized approach to your working environment may indicate higher levels of generosity and conscientiousness (一丝不苟), taking a more relaxed attitude to tidiness may result in higher levels of creativity. (研究表明,凌乱的办公桌有其优势,整洁的办公桌同样如此。虽然将工作环境保持极度整洁有序可能意味着更高水平的慷慨和一丝不苟,但保持更随意的整洁态度则可能带来更高水平的创造力)”可知,2025年的论文指出,整洁和杂乱的工作环境各有优势。故选B项。
52.细节理解题。根据第二段中“However, those in the messier environments appeared to think outside the box and contribute to more novel ideas when required to identify new uses for a ping-pong ball.
根据第五段中“Throughout the years, popular studies have connected a number of characteristics and habits to IQ. (多年来,众多流行研究将多种性格特征和行为习惯与智商水平相关联)”和“and, yes, we see the ridiculousness and contradiction. So, with this in mind, it might be worth taking them all with some reservations. (而且,没错,我们也看到了其中的荒谬与矛盾。因此,考虑到这一点,或许我们应该对所有研究结果都保持一定的保留态度)”可知,作者认为以往的研究存在荒谬与矛盾之处,应对其持一定的保留态度,因此他会建议读者谨慎看待研究结果。故选A项。
根据最后一段“But let’s get back to the state of your desk. If it is on the messier side, you are in good company. Albert Einstein, Steve Jobs, and Mark Twain all preferred their workspaces to remain in a state of productive disorder. So, next time your boss accuses you of having a less-than-tidy work surface, you can point out Vohs’ study to them.

58.How did Candice Payne help the homeless people? (no more than 8 words)
59.What does the underlined part mean in the last paragraph? (no more than 3 words)
60.What do you think of Payne? Please give your reasons. (no more than 20 words)
56.They faced freezing to death without shelter for the night.
They may freeze to death staying outside for the night. 57.Because she knew homeless people’s struggle from her husband’s past experience.
Because she knew the homeless desperately needed help.
Because she worried about those stuck on the street. 58.By buying hotel rooms for them.
By paying for hotel rooms for them.
She paid for/bought hotel rooms for them. 59.Was known
Became famous
Drew public’s attention 60.She is a warm-hearted person, because she cares about homeless people and tries her best to help them.
根据文章第一段“Recently, homeless people across Chicago faced freezing to death if they couldn’t find shelter for the night.(最近,芝加哥各地的无家可归者如果找不到过夜的地方,就会面临被冻死的危险)”可知,芝加哥各地的无家可归者面临的最大的问题就是如果夜里找不到过夜的地方,就会被冻死。 They faced freezing to death without shelter for the night.或They may freeze to death staying outside for the night。
根据文章第三段“For Payne, her mission was personal. According to Payne, her husband, Carlos Callahan, had lived on the street at one point in his life. Based on his experience, Payne knew that the homeless people still living on the street desperately needed help and she wanted to step up. (对Payne来说,她的任务是私人的。据Payne说,她的丈夫Carlos Callahan一生中有一段时间曾露宿街头。根据他的经验,Payne知道那些仍然住在街上的无家可归的人迫切需要帮助,她想挺身而出)”可知,Payne之所以决定帮助这些无家可归的人,是因为从自己的丈夫之前的经历中,Payne知道这些人如果得不到帮助就很难存活下来。故答案为She knew homeless people’s struggle from her husband’s past experience.或She knew the homeless desperately needed help. 或She worried about those stuck on the street.
根据文章第四段“However, when Payne explained what she was trying to do, many of the local hotels refused to allow her to pay for the rooms as they didn’t want homeless people to stay in their rooms. “No one wanted them, but one hotel, the Amber Inn, was nice enough to allow me to buy the rooms,” said Payne.(然而,当Payne解释她的意图时,当地的许多酒店拒绝让她支付房费,因为他们不想让无家可归的人住在他们的房间里。Payne说:“没有人想要这些房间,但有一家叫Amber Inn的酒店很好,让我买下了房间。”)”可知,Payne打算通过在旅馆买下房间或支付房费来提供给无家可归的人居住过夜从而帮助他们。故答案By buying hotel rooms for them.或By paying for hotel rooms for them.或She paid for/bought hotel rooms for them.
根据划线单词下一句“However, she insisted she had never done it for attention.(然而,她坚称自己这么做绝不是为了引起注意)”中的“however”可知,前后存在转折关系。 故答案为Was known或Became famous 或Drew public’s attention
She is a warm-hearted person, because she cares about homeless people and tries her best to help them.

Possible Version 1
Dear Chris,
Glad to hear you’re participating in the World Earth Day poster contest!
Yours,
Li HuaPossible Version 2
Dear Chris,
Glad to hear you’re participating in the World Earth Day poster contest! Both versions are fantastic, but I favor the second one, “OUR ACTIONS, OUR FUTURE.”
What makes this poster stand out is the perfect combination of its image and slogan. In terms of the image, it presents a hopeful scene where a pair of hands gently holds the Earth. On top of the globe, leafy trees and a bright sun vividly symbolize a green, sustainable future. Moreover, the slogan perfectly matches the drawing. Written entirely in bold capitals, the words create a strong impact, conveying a highly positive message that the destiny of our planet literally lies in our own hands.
I’m sure this inspiring design will shine in the contest and motivate more people to take concrete eco-friendly actions. Good luck!
Yours,
Li Hua
