AI Makes Traditional Medicine Smarter

Artificial intelligence (AI) is now helping traditional medicine become easier to use, more standard and more scientific. A new report about this was released in Beijing during the 2026 World Conference on Traditional Medicine.

For a long time, traditional medicine has depended on experience passed from teachers to students. It often lacks the clear rules used in modern medicine. Li Haiyan, a researcher who helped lead the report, said AI can turn these practices into knowledge and data. Then the knowledge can be stored, tested and shared more easily.

Premier Li Qiang said science and technology can help traditional medicine develop faster. He also said China will support the digital and smart growth of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and welcome research groups and companies from home and abroad to join in.

The report shows that AI in traditional medicine is growing quickly. Since 2000, 3,030 AI-related patents on traditional medicine have been published around the world. Since 1990, 6,882 high-quality papers have come out. China accounted for 80.4% of the patents and 47% of the papers.

In hospitals, AI can help doctors examine a patient's tongue, pulse and face. For some health problems, AI tongue diagnosis is 85% to 92% correct. Some AI models, trained on famous TCM doctors' experience, have been piloted in county TCM hospitals. In this way, more people can get better care.

AI is also used to study medicinal plants, speed up medicine research, and read ancient medical books more carefully. Besides TCM, the report also talks about traditional medicine in Korea and India. However, not every country has the same digital tools, so wider use is still limited. Experts say we still need better data, clearer explanations of how treatments work, and clearer rules for using AI in traditional medicine.
