One quiet afternoon in France in her working place, wood crafting (木制工艺) artist Hua Yong found herself watching water boil. Without thinking, she reached for her phone and looked at the screen again. At that very moment, she realized how much modern life is controlled by speed. “We are completely caught up by the quick speed of life,” she said. “It’s becoming harder to find time to relax among our daily mess of life.”
Hua Yong, the 2024 receiver of the Hand of Wisdom prize, a China-France crafts exchange program, spent two months in Paris last year, which allowed her to think deeply about the act of creation. She started trying simple shapes with straight lines and angles, doing them many times to make visual (视觉的) effects that seemed to go past time and space. “I thought about how to make something new from nothing, and used the highest standards of traditional Chinese skills to bring these ideas to life,” she said.
“Wood crafting requires a lot of time,” she said. Her show Changing the World in Silence at Yishu8, a place for art in Beijing, was the most meaningful part of a year’s deep thought. Running until mid-June, the show has 25 pieces of artwork, 11 of which were made after her stay in Paris. Among the works was a vortex-shaped (旋涡状的) table, which drew the viewer’s mind into another world. “We hope all the artworks here quietly stay with the viewers, giving their minds a short break and a moment of relaxation,” described Hua.
“She has long worked with traditional Chinese materials and kept thinking,” said Su Dan, the art leader of Hand of Wisdom, watching Hua’s change since her return. “Works made in such deep thought become perfect models of designing ideas: They may last only for a short time in our daily life, but remain forever in our mind.”
4. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To show the artist’s skill in wood crafting. B. To explain the artist’s mess of life in detail.
C. To describe the artist’s working environment. D. To introduce the artist’s idea about modern life.
5. How did Hua Yong’s experience in Paris influence her creation?
A. It won her the Hand of Wisdom prize. B. It offered her thoughts on Chinese skills.
C. It changed her understanding of creation. D. It gave her some simple shapes to work with.
6. Why was “a vortex- shaped table” included in her show at Yishu 8?
A. To test viewers’ interest in wooden art. B. To show the highest standards of skills.
C. To make it remain forever in viewers’ mind. D. To give viewers’ minds a getaway from daily life.
7. What can we learn from Su Dan’s words about Hua Yong’s artworks?
A. They do not last for a long time. B. They require too much time to make.
C. They provide perfect models for viewers. D. They leave a lasting impression on viewers.
【答案】4. D 5. C 6. D 7. D

Many of the existing efforts to protect species across the United States depend on information about where these species currently live. But as climate change changes the existing conditions, most animals and plants will need to move to cooler or more suitable environments to survive. How does this influence efforts to protect biodiversity?
A new study has found that many species of animals and plants will likely need to move under climate change and that conservation (保护) efforts will also need to change to be effective. “We are going to need to protect different places if we want to protect biodiversity in the future,” said lead author Joshua Lawler. “We need to think about where species will go as the climate changes, and then plan for that. The business-as-usual planning process is not viable.”
The research team found that unless climate change influences are considered directly, 14% of species would not have a suitable place to live under climate change. This is because current protections focus on where species are today, not where they will need to be in the future as temperatures warm.
With climate change advancing, there’s a pressing need to develop plans and carry them out, protecting important landscapes, the researchers said.
“Climate change effects that were originally projected to be many years in the future are starting to become observable in the present day,” said co-author John Withey. “We need to take action as soon as possible, thinking about where species may need to go under climate change, and providing corridors (通道) through which they can move.”
The authors hope this study will be helpful for land conservation organizations to determine which areas should be considered key for conservation. While their study points out parts of the country that will need more conservation attention under climate change, they warn that the paper isn’t meant to help determine specific new parks to protect.
“This paper is pointing out that we might be missing opportunities or places where conservation is going to be needed in the face of climate change,” Withey said. “Another hope is that we can start determining which places would protect species and would allow species to move without increasing our costs too much.”
8. What does the underlined word “viable” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Possible. B. Avoidable. C. Workable. D. Challenging.
9. What is the problem with current protections?
A. They only consider present species locations. B. They lack support from the government.
C. They do not include enough species. D. They are too costly to manage.
10. What do the authors of the study hope to achieve?
A. Developing specific new parks. B. Reducing the cost of conservation.
C. Guiding future conservation work. D. Drawing attention to climate change.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Adapting conservation measures to climate change B. Great influences of climate change on species
C. New challenges in biodiversity conservation D. Exploring conservation efforts in the US
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. C 11. A
【解析】
【导语】文章主要介绍了气候变化下物种需迁徙,现有保护措施滞后,呼吁调整保护策略以适应未来需求。
【8题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中““We are going to need to protect different places if we want to protect biodiversity in the future,” said lead author Joshua Lawler. “We need to think about where species will go as the climate changes, and then plan for that. The business-as-usual planning process is not viable.”(主要作者约书亚·劳勒说:“如果我们想在未来保护生物多样性,就需要保护不同的地方。我们需要考虑物种在气候变化时会去哪里,并据此制定计划。这种按部就班的规划流程是不viable。”)”可知,Lawler指出未来的保护工作需关注物种未来的栖息地,按部就班的常规规划行不通了。由此推知,viable意为“可行的,能奏效的”。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“This is because current protections focus on where species are today, not where they will need to be in the future as temperatures warm.(这是因为目前的保护措施关注的是物种当下的所在地,而非随着气温升高它们在未来需要去往的地方)”可知,当前保护措施的问题在于仅考虑了物种目前的分布位置,忽视了其未来的迁徙需求。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中“The authors hope this study will be helpful for land conservation organizations to determine which areas should be considered key for conservation.(作者希望这项研究能帮助土地保护组织确定哪些区域应被视为保护重点)”以及最后一段中“Another hope is that we can start determining which places would protect species and would allow species to move without increasing our costs too much.(另一个希望是,我们可以开始确定哪些地方可以保护物种,并允许物种在不增加太多成本的情况下迁徙)”可知,作者希望通过研究结果为未来的保护工作提供方向指引,即指导未来的保护实践。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段中“A new study has found that many species of animals and plants will likely need to move under climate change and that conservation efforts will also need to change to be effective.(一项新研究发现,许多动植物在气候变化下可能需要迁徙,而保护工作也需要随之调整才能有效)”并结合全文内容可知,文章主要论述了随着气候变化,物种需要迁移,现有的保护措施必须随之调整才能有效保护生物多样性。A选项“Adapting conservation measures to climate change(调整保护措施以适应气候变化)”精准概括了全文主旨。
D
It is widely known that sitting for long hours is unhealthy. Scientists say that sitting might not quite be“the new smoking”, but too much of it can still shorten your life.
We spend a lot of time sitting. Numbers of daily sitting hours for Americans vary, but some studies point out it can be as long as nine and a half hours. Studies suggest women sit less than men do, but most agree we all sit more than earlier generations did. Similar things are found around the world, including in Asian countries.
A 13-year study following 480,000 people in Paris found those who sit most of the work day had a 34% higher risk of dying from heart disease than those with less sedentary (久坐) jobs did—and a 16% higher risk of death. The American Heart Association notes that sitting too long raises the risk of developing heart disease, even for those who exercise regularly. Sitting for long periods has also been linked to lower back or knee pain. Studies show that sitting still for more than four hours can weaken leg strength and increase pressure on spinal discs (脊间盘). Besides, sitting burns very little energy. Over time, this inactive lifestyle can reduce your body’s ability to control blood sugar and break down fat, potentially leading to weight gain and raising diabetes (糖尿病) risk. In general, modern workers burn 100 fewer calories daily than 50 years ago. Beyond physical health, sitting also affects mental health. It increases the chances of sad feelings and anxiety.
To reduce the risks of a sedentary lifestyle, the key is to move more often. Make a habit of breaking up long periods of sitting; get up and move for a few minutes every half hour. Aim for at least 30 minutes of active movement every day, like a quick walk, dancing, or playing a sport. Also, small changes help a lot: climb the stairs, walk while talking on the phone, or have walking meetings with friends. By sitting less and moving more, you’ ll increase your energy, improve your feelings, and protect your health for years to come.
12. What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A. People sit less now than in the past. B. Women sit more than men on a daily basis.
C. Americans sit more than Asian people. D. Long-time sitting is a worldwide problem.
13. What’s paragraph 3 mainly about in terms of long-time sitting?
A. The solutions. B. The causes. C. The results. D. The types.
14. What is the key to reducing the risks of long-time sitting?
A. More physical activity and less sitting. B. Exercising for one hour every weekend.
C. Avoiding sitting at work completely. D. More healthy foods to increase energy.
15. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A. To prove that sitting is more harmful than smoking.
B. To explain why people sit for longer hours than before.
C. To warn of long-time sitting’s risks and advise action.
D. To introduce the research findings on sedentary lifestyles.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. A 15. C
根据文章第二段中的“Studies suggest women sit less than men do, but most agree we all sit more than earlier generations did. Similar things are found around the world, including in Asian countries.(研究表明女性比男性坐的时间少,但大多数人都认为我们坐的时间都比前几代人多,并且在世界各地,包括亚洲国家,都有类似的情况。)”可知,这表明长时间坐着是一个全球性的问题。故选D项。
【13题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段中“A 13-year study following 480,000 people in Paris found those who sit most of the work day had a 34% higher risk of dying from heart disease than those with less sedentary (久坐) jobs did—and a 16% higher risk of death. (一项针对巴黎 48 万人进行的长达 13 年的研究发现,那些在工作日大部分时间都坐着的人,死于心脏病的风险比那些工作时较少久坐的人高出 34%——而且他们的死亡风险还要高出 16%。)”以及“Sitting for long periods has also been linked to lower back or knee pain. (久坐也与腰痛或膝盖疼痛有关。)”以及“Besides, sitting burns very little energy. Over time, this inactive lifestyle can reduce your body’s ability to control blood sugar and break down fat, potentially leading to weight gain and raising diabetes (糖尿病) risk. (此外,久坐不动消耗的能量极少。长期保持这种不活跃的生活方式会降低身体控制血糖和分解脂肪的能力,从而可能导致体重增加,并增加患糖尿病的风险。)”可知,该段主要讲述了长时间坐着对健康的各种不良影响。故选C项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章最后一段中的“To reduce the risks of a sedentary lifestyle, the key is to move more often. Make a habit of breaking up long periods of sitting; get up and move for a few minutes every half hour.(为了减少久坐生活方式的风险,关键是多运动,养成打破长时间坐着的习惯,每半小时起来活动几分钟。)”可知,这表明减少长时间坐着的风险的关键是更多的身体活动和更少的坐着。故选A项。
C选项“To warn of long-time sitting’s risks and advise action.(警告长时间久坐的风险并提出建议。)”符合题意。故选C项。

It was twenty years ago and I was in the fifth grade. My marks in school were terrible and, the thing was, I didn’t know enough to really care. My elder brother and I lived with Mom in an ugly multi-family house in Detroit. We watched TV every night.
But one day Mom changed our world forever. She turned off the TV. Our mother had only been able to get through third grade. But, she was much brighter and smarter than we boys knew at the time. She had noticed something in the houses she cleaned - books. So she came back home one day after work, turned off the TV, sat us down and explained that her sons were going to make something of themselves. “You boys are going to read two books every week,” she said. “And you’re going to write a report on what you read.”
We moaned (抱怨) and said how unfair it was, because none of our friends did that. Besides, we don’t have any books in our home other than Mom’s Bible (圣经). But she explained that we would go where the books were: “I’ll drive you to the library.”
So pretty soon there were these two boys in bad mood sitting in her old white car on their way to Detroit Public Library. I wandered unwillingly among the children’s books. I loved animals, so when I saw some books that seemed to be about animals, I started looking through them, and the first book I read was about wolves.

【答案】For the first time in my life, I was lost in another world. I couldn’t believe how fascinating these creatures are. My brother, too, found his passion in books. With much to share, writing reports was no longer a struggle. We would discuss our reports with enthusiasm, unaware that our life focus had switched from TV to books. Naturally, my marks went up and years later I entered a great university. Now looking back, I realized that Mom’s simple act of turning off the TV and opening the door to books wasn’t just about reading; it was also about lighting up dreams and shaping future. And for that, I am forever grateful.

C
Exploring conservation efforts in the US

注意:
