In the late 1990s, a family visited the school where I taught deaf (聋的) students. They planned to send their deaf daughter here as a first grader. They were unhappy because her kindergarten teacher told them not to expect too much from her and said her future would not be bright. Standing behind them was Katherine, a beautiful five-year-old girl. During the whole visit, she made no sound and did not use sign language (手语), even when her parents encouraged her.
After a few weeks, I found Katherine was a bright and strong-willed child. She enjoyed many learning activities, but writing was always hard for her. I tried many ways to make her interested in writing. But every time I gave her a pencil, she refused to write.
One day Katherine got off the bus and stood in front of the school, crying loudly. The staff did not know enough sign language to ask why. They took her to the office and gave her a pen and a notepad. She wrote: “PAC BAK.” Then they knew she left her backpack on the bus. They called the bus back, and soon Katherine got her backpack again.
That day Katherine found the power of the pen. From then on, she loved writing more and more. She is a young woman now and has become an excellent writer and public speaker. I still keep in touch with her and treasure her e-mails.
4. What can we learn about Katherine from Paragraph 1?
A. She was going to be a grade one student.

6. What was Katherine’s big problem in learning?
A. She could not hear clearly. B. She was afraid of meeting new people.
C. She was not willing to write. D. She could not remember new words.
7. What is the main idea of the whole passage?
A. A deaf girl changed greatly after she found the power of writing.

D. Parents should believe their children all the time.

Florence Nightingale was born in 1820 into a very rich family. As a child, she was home-schooled by her father. As Florence grew up and became a young woman, she decided she wanted to train to become a nurse.
In 1853, the Crimean War started, and soon many injured British soldiers were suffering in terrible conditions. Florence, now a trained nurse, was asked to go to Crimea to help. She agreed and was sent to Barracks Hospital.
Once there, Florence saw thousands of sick and wounded men, and there were not even enough beds for all of them. The hospital was dirty, smelly and full of mice. A lot of the men were dying from diseases they had caught in the hospital.

We all remember our first cry at the movies. Whether they are tears of joy or sadness, it’s quite surprising that human emotion (情绪) can be controlled by moving images on a screen. In fact, it all comes from a plan. But what about those heart- breaking stories… for kids? They seem not to sugarcoat the realities of the world.
Actually, many great kids’ movies filled with tragedy (悲剧) are purposefully meant to stir up kids’ strong feelings. According to Aristotle, tragedy aids us in facing life’s unsolvable issues through sensible (理智的) thinking. Therefore, the existence of tragedy in kids’ movies is to teach kids to handle, to understand and to heal. The hardest lesson for a child is how to deal with loss, especially if it’s sudden. The cartoon classic The Lion King tells the story of Simba, who experiences the loss of his father. Kids see themselves in Simba’s character. He has dreams. He has a desire to grow and be a part of a bigger world. But it is really heartbreaking to see the loss.
Why is a film like this so beloved when it makes kids cry? The lesson it teaches is to overcome hardships and to move forward. Hakuna Matata! Yes, the phrase from The Lion King is to teach kids it’s okay to move on from tragic loss and not to let it define you. It’s an important lesson we learned at a very young age. Sadness should not be ignored (忽视). It’s important to feel sad, and that is why these films are so great. In Dumbo, Charlotte’s Web and Bridge to Terabithia, we lose our beloved characters. This quite upsets kids, but it teaches them to accept sadness and makes something new out of it.
So, what is the message behind a sad kids’ movie? It’s meant to teach the audience, especially children, to gain their independence and how to free themselves from tragedy. It’s like a cushion (缓冲垫) that separates stories from reality. It helps children deal with sad feelings when they come for real, or at least find relief by saying Hakuna Matata.
12. Why does the author mention “first cry” in paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the topic. B. To recommend a movie.
C. To support an argument. D. To explain the reason.
13. What does the underlined phrase “Hakuna Matata” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Viewing sadness as a torture.
B. Seeking knowledge to enrich life.
C. Challenging oneself with tragic losses.
D. Heading forward without being caught by the sadness.
14. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Children can find a way to hide sad feelings.
B. Children can learn to ignore sadness in tragedy.
C. Sad kids’ movies prepare children for tough times.
D. Sad kids’ movies help children to escape from reality.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Moving Beyond Reality: Why Are Great Kids’ Movies So Sad?
B. Behind the Scene: Why Is The Lion King A Good and Sad Movie?
C. Life’s Hardest Lesson: How Kids’ Movies Inspire Other movie industries?
D. The Secret of Tears: What Makes A Movie Sad?
A 13. D 14. C 15. A
根据第一段中“We all remember our first cry at the movies. Whether they are tears of joy or sadness, it’s quite surprising that human emotion (情绪) can be controlled by moving images on a screen. In fact, it all comes from a plan. But what about those heart-breaking stories… for kids?(我们都记得看电影时的第一次哭泣。
根据画线部分的上文“The lesson it teaches is to overcome hardships and to move forward. (它教给我们的是克服困难,继续前进)”和下文“Yes, the phrase from The Lion King is to teach kids it’s okay to move on from tragic loss and not to let it define you.(是的,《狮子王》里的那句话是要告诉孩子们,从悲剧中走出来是可以的,不要让它定义你)”可推知,前文提到要克服苦难继续前行,后文解释该短语含义是从失去中走出来,由此推测 Hakuna Matata 指不被悲伤困住,继续向前。
根据最后一段中“It’s meant to teach the audience, especially children, to gain their independence and how to free themselves from tragedy. It’s like a cushion (缓冲垫) that separates stories from reality. It helps children deal with sad feelings when they come for real, or at least find relief by saying Hakuna Matata.(它的目的是教会观众,尤其是孩子,获得独立,如何从悲剧中解脱出来。它就像一个缓冲垫,把故事和现实分开。当悲伤情绪真正来临时,它能帮助孩子们应对这些情绪,或者至少通过说“Hakuna Matata”来找到解脱)”可推知,这些电影让孩子们为艰难的时刻做好准备。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中“But what about those heart-breaking stories… for kids? They seem not to sugarcoat the realities of the world.(但是那些让孩子们心碎的故事呢?他们似乎没有粉饰世界的现实)”可知,文章开篇提出了对于儿童电影中那些令人心碎的故事的疑问,然后围绕着儿童电影中存在悲剧元素展开论述,详细解释了许多儿童电影充满悲剧的原因。因此,文章是在探讨出色的儿童电影为何会有悲伤元素,A项“超越现实:为什么出色的儿童电影如此悲伤”最符合文章主旨,适合作为标题。

At first, all Florence and the other nurses were allowed to do was to clean. They were not allowed to nurse the sick men. But as more and more sick and injured soldiers started to arrive, the doctors were forced to ask Florence for help. Florence and her team were very serious about their work and they all wore the same uniform. Thanks to their efforts, the hospital was cleaner and healthier for the sick soldiers, who thought Florence was a very special lady for what she had done for them.
When Florence arrived home, she was a heroine. The people loved her and she became very famous. She had songs written about her and received lots of awards (奖), even one from the Queen herself.
