B The Amazon rainforest in Brazil is a wonderful place, home to a large number of colorful plants and animals. A Brazilian biologist is now working to make the rainforest safer for the many primate (灵长类) creatures that live in it. She’s achieving her goal by building canopy (树冠) bridges across a major highway. Brazil has the fourth-largest road network in the world, and is home to the BR-174, a 2,000-mile highway that winds through the Amazon rainforest. Unfortunately, these roads also pose a huge threat to the wildlife in the diverse area. It is reported that 475 million backboned animals are killed in road accidents every year in Brazil. This is where Fernanda Abra comes in. Together with her team Abra has set up 30 canopy bridges made of rope along the BR-174. Each bridge is observed with two cameras, which catch the scenes of animals coming near. The researchers found that animals began using the bridges within 30 days of their setting-up. Five hundred crossings have been recorded over an 11-month period. Abra and her team got help from the native Waimiri-Atroari people. Their territory (领土), which covers over 2.3 million hectares, is one of the most well-protected regions in the Amazon. It is also cut through by the BR-174. It has been a long and difficult struggle, but now more than 150 Waimiri-Atroari people have helped build and set up the bridges along around 77 miles of the highway. Abra’s goal is to train workers in federal transport and environmental agencies in nine states in the Brazilian Amazon to establish a culture of sustainable infrastructure (可持续基础设施). Sometimes the solutions to what seem to be difficult problems can actually be very simple. The bridges may save thousands of lives and help keep the Amazon and its amazing, diverse, and rich ecosystem alive. 4. Why does Fernanda Abra build canopy bridges? A. To make the highway wider. B. To develop local tourism. C. To save primate creatures. D. To study the rainforest better. 5. How do the cameras on the canopy bridges work? A. They prevent road accidents. B. They record animals’ approaching. C. They watch the bridge’s safety. D. They count the number of animals. 6. What can we know about the BR-174? A It has a positive effect on wildlife. B. It’s the longest highway in Brazil. C. It winds through the Congo rainforest. D. It divides some well-preserved areas. 7. What is Abra’s attitude towards the canopy bridge project? A. Hopeful. B. Uncertain. C. Confused. D. Worried. C In Shakespeare’s HAMLET, Polonius asks the prince, “What are you reading, my Lord?” Hamlet replies, “Words, words, words.” Either, as is likely, Hamlet wasn’t interested in what he was reading, or, less likely, he didn’t understand the words he was reading. In this case, Polonius should have lent Hamlet a good dictionary. Dictionaries are essential tools for people who like to read. There are so many words in English that even the most educated person will sometimes meet an unfamiliar word and have to look it up. From their start to the present day, languages keep changing, too, with new words being added and new meanings being applied to old words. For example, the 12th edition of Xinhua Dictionary, the most popular dictionary in China, has added new words such as “chu xin” “fen si” “er wei ma” etc. A printed dictionary can’t keep pace with all the changes, which is why most dictionaries have websites and apps to help you keep up-to-date. However, I still prefer printed dictionaries. Printed primary dictionaries have been carefully and specifically selected for younger learners to ensure that they are able to get information which is age and stage appropriate (恰当的) in a safe environment. What’s more, even a simple word, such as “set”, has 430 meanings, but an online dictionary would only offer two or three. A printed dictionary also gives you the opportunity to discover new words as you run your finger down the page looking for the word you want. The diversity (多样化) of English dictionaries today shows the varied needs of their users. There is no “official” English dictionary, but the Oxford English Dictionary is considered to be the best, which is admired for its historical and comprehensive (全面的) coverage of the language. For English language learners, however, I would recommend the Collins COBUILD Dictionary for Advanced Learners. Hamlet, by the way, was Danish and a college student. He would have appreciated the Collins Dictionary to help himself with his words, words, words. This dictionary has over 40,000 words and gives you full-sentence definitions with good examples of how words are used. 8. Why does the author mention Hamlet? A. To introduce dictionary use. B. To praise Shakespeare’s work. C. To explain Danish education. D. To show Hamlet’s willingness to learn. 9. What does the example of Xinhua Dictionary in paragraph 2 show? A. Dictionaries should add more daily examples. B. Printed dictionaries are outdated and incomplete. C. Dictionaries are changing to keep up with the times. D. Dictionaries should focus more on historical language. 10. What advantage does the author think a printed dictionary has? A. It is always up-to-date with new words. B. It has fewer confusing meanings of words. C. It connects you with official websites and apps. D. It provides more carefully selected content for learners. 11. What makes Collins Dictionary suitable for English learners? A. Detailed historical word origins. B. The most word collections worldwide. C. Complete definitions with useful examples. D. Official recognition as the standard English dictionary. D Students and teachers joined hands in a community activity aimed at cutting down on bird window hits during the fall migration (迁徙). They hoped their efforts could also raise awareness about bird protection among the whole school. The windows at E. J. Pratt Library have recently been upgraded to be more bird-friendly, as part of a campus-wide effort to help keep birds from crashing into Victoria University’s beautiful buildings. The bird-friendly building project, a partnership between BirdSafe U of T and Victoria University in the University of Toronto, brought together students and teachers who care about protecting the birds that share our space. The window-treatment process included drawing dense (密集的), high-contrast patterns on the outside surface, which can help break up the reflection and warn birds about the glass. The goal is to reduce the number of deaths from bird-window hits on Vic U’s campus this fall migration. Hearing the concerns (担忧) about bird safety on Vic U’s campus from students and teachers, Kam Jahresi, senior manager of campus operations, helped organize the event with BirdSafe U of T. Students and teachers put up prints of the bird-friendly drawings, using them as guides to paint the outside windows of E. J. Pratt Library. Vic U’s president Rhonda McEwen also joined the event. Jahresi was thankful for the community support. “Students loved both the art and the event’s environmental focus,” he said. “They are interested in taking part in similar events in the future! The partnership shows that sustainability is a team effort.” BirdSafe U of T co-creator Carly Davenport was gratified to see the results of the event. “Everyone showed interest in our cause and took part,” she said. “It was great to speak with students from different backgrounds who came to learn about the event. Some students even asked how they could start similar projects in their hometowns.” 12. What danger do birds encounter on Victoria University’s campus? A. Being driven away by the campus staff. B. Crashing into the buildings when flying. C. Being attacked by other animals on the campus. D. Lacking enough food during their fall migration. 13. What measure did Vie U’s students and teachers take for birds? A. Putting up warning signs. B. Painting on window glass. C. Setting up bird shelters. D. Increasing the area of trees. 14. What does the underlined word “gratified” in the last paragraph probably mean? A. Doubtful. B. Frightened. C. Satisfied. D. Intelligent. 15. What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage? A. To explain how to design bird-friendly patterns on campus windows. B. To compare different ways of protecting birds during fall migration. C. To discuss the importance of sustainability in campus management. D. To describe a campus activity for better sharing of space with birds. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Climate change may be a global issue, but it also impacts our day-to-day lives. Sarah, a high school student, pulled her coat tighter (更紧地) as she hurried home from school. The sun had already set, and the weak streetlights made long dark shapes on the snow-covered road. As she turned the corner, a faint whimper (微弱的声音) caught her attention. She stopped and looked around, her breath forming little clouds in the freezing air. Then she saw it — a small, shaking puppy curled (蜷缩) up near a small frozen pool of water. Its golden fur was stuck together with dirt, and its bones were visible under its thin coat. The poor creature lifted its head weakly, and its dark eyes filled with fear and tiredness. Sarah’s heart ached. She had always loved animals, but her parents had strict rules — no pets, no breaking the rules. They believed pets were too many responsibilities for a busy student. Still, the sight of the helpless puppy made her think twice. “I can’t just leave you here,” she said quietly, getting down on her knees beside it. The puppy shook very hard, and without thinking, Sarah took off her scarf and gently wrapped it around the puppy. With the puppy cradled (轻抱) in her arms, she quickened her pace toward home. Her mind raced — what would her parents say? Would they make her take it back outside? But the puppy’s warmth against her chest gave her courage. She knew she couldn’t leave it. When she finally reached her house, she took a deep breath and opened the door. Her mother, who was setting the dinner table, turned around — and froze. “Sarah!” she said in shock, staring at the small wrapped-up creature in her daughter’s arms. “What on earth is that?” 注意: (1)续写词数应为120左右; (2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Sarah held the puppy tighter, her heart racing as she waited for her mother’s reaction. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ That evening, Sarah’s whole family found excuses to visit the garage (车库). __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 试卷类型:B (外研社版) 2025~2026学年度第一学期阶段性联考(二)高一英语 注意事项: 1. How much is the shirt? Overall, it was a valuable and enriching experience. 第二节(满分25分) 【47题答案】 【答案】 Sarah held the puppy tighter, her heart racing as she waited for her mother’s reaction. She explained in a shaky voice how she found the poor puppy shivering by the frozen pool, too weak to move. She begged her mother, “It’ll die if we leave it outside. Let’s just keep it in the garage tonight, please?” Her mother softened at the puppy’s pitiful whimpers, sighed and nodded. Sarah rushed to the garage, making a warm nest with old blankets. That evening, Sarah’s whole family found excuses to visit the garage (车库). Dad brought a bowl of warm milk, while her little sister snuck in a piece of ham.
