Mrs. Li is over 80 years old. She has lived in Beijing all her life. A reporter interviewed her yesterday. The following are their questions and answers.
Q: What was your life like in the past?
A: My family lived in a tiny house. My father was a postman, and he often worked twelve hours a day outside in the winter cold or in the summer heat. My mum was a farm girl before she met my father. She was a kind and loving mother. She didn’t go out to work. There were five children in my family, and looking after us was more than a full-time job.
The food we ate was simple. We could only eat meat once or twice a year. I couldn’t go to school because my family couldn’t afford it.
Q: How has life changed?
A: Families have got smaller than they were in the past. The role of women has changed too. My daughter is really lucky. She has a good education. I’m happy that she can go to work even after getting married, but sometimes I feel lonely because she can’t come to see me often.
Transport and travel are easier today. When I was young, I went everywhere on foot. Now you can take the bus, drive the car or ride the shared bikes. What I don’t like is that there’s so much more traffic. It’s so difficult to cross the road. And, of course, we have televisions today and I really enjoy watching TV. But I hate some of the shows because they are too noisy for me.
Generally speaking, I think life is better today. We eat better and we live longer.
39. What do we know about Mrs. Li’s parents?
A. They often ate delicious food. B. They both worked hard for family.
C. They had no sons. D. They lived on a farm.
40. What does the underlined word “afford” mean?
A. Pay. B. Find. C. Learn. D. Receive.
41. The passage tells us that Mrs. Li ________.
A. can often see her daughter
B. prefers the life in the past
C. has lived in Beijing for 60 years
D. couldn’t go to school because her family was poor
42. Which part of the passage can you probably find in a newspaper?
A. Business. B. Nature. C. Life. D. Travel.
C
To me, one of the most inspiring people in Chinese history is Confucius (551-479 BCE). It is said that Confucius was a great teacher. He opened private schools for common people when education was only for rich families. He also travelled across many states to spread his ideas. But in fact, above all, he was a great thinker.
Confucius lived during the Spring and Autumn Period. Back then, society was in great disorder. Many states fought with one another, and ordinary people suffered a lot from wars and unfair rules. To Confucius, society needed order and kindness, so he spent his lifetime trying to teach people to be polite, honest and caring.
His idea of ren (benevolence) was the core (核心) of his thought. It was important to him that everyone should love and respect others. He believed good rulers should care for their people. He told us that we should never do to others what we would not want others to do to us.
Though Confucius lived more than 2,000 years ago, his ideas live on. Now, more than ever, people around the world need to hear his message of kindness and good manners, and learn to get along well with each other.
43. What was Confucius above all?
A. A traveller. B. A great thinker. C. A soldier. D. A woodworker.
44. What did Confucius spend his life trying to do?
A. Invent new tools. B. Stop all wars by force.
C. Build schools for rulers only. D. Teach people to be kind and polite.
45. What does the underlined sentence mean?
A. 己所不欲,勿施于人 B. 有朋自远方来,不亦乐乎
C. 吾日三省吾身 D. 知之为知之,不知为不知

Jane Austen (1775-1817) was a famous British writer. Last year, people around the world celebrated the 250th anniversary of her birth.
Austen grew up in a small village in England. She loved reading and writing from a young age. At that time, women were expected to marry rich men. In Emma, the main character makes mistakes when she tries to help her friends find love. These stories are not just about love stories. They ask serious questions: Should women marry for money? Can they choose their own future? The main characters in the stories are brave and independent. A Jane Austen expert said, “She writes about people’s problems. And those problems are still important today.”

Jane Austen (1775-1817) was a famous British writer. Last year, people around the world celebrated the 250th anniversary of her birth.
Austen grew up in a small village in England. She loved reading and writing from a young age. At that time, women were expected to marry rich men. They could not have control of their own money until 1870. They had no right to vote (选举) until 1918. But Austen did not follow this path. She never married and wrote six novels instead.
