China’s great charging network (充电网络) made it possible. “The charging is quite fast now, taking just 10 minutes for 60 kilowatt-hours,” Xu said. “With lots of charging piles along the whole way, I could drive without any trouble.” Xu’s experience shows a great change in China’s holiday travel. More and more people are choosing to drive new energy vehicles (NEVs, 新能源汽车) when traveling. That’s because there are more and more charging piles on the road. National Day and the Mid-Autumn Festival sometimes come together. So the long vacation makes more people want to travel. On Oct.1, highway charging reached 17.49 million kilowatt-hours, an increase of 41.95 percent from 2024, official data showed. During the first half of the holiday, about 1.24 billion trips were made. Road travel was still the most popular choice. Also, more and more of these trips used NEVs. On Oct. 1 and Oct.2, the number of NEVs on China’s highways was about 13.3 million and 12.4 million. That is 26.2 % and 30.1% higher than the same days in 2024. China’s NEV market has grown very fast in recent years. By the end of June, there were 36.89 million NEVs running on Chinese roads. They made up 10.27 percent of all the cars in China. China has held its position as the world’s largest NEV market for ten years. China now has the biggest charging network in the world. For every 5 electric cars, there are 2 charging piles. 16. What can we infer from Xu Yuan’s experience? A. Xu Yuan dislikes travelling in her electric car. B. All the people will drive electric cars during holidays. C. Electric cars are more expensive than traditional cars. D. China’s charging network is helpful for electric car travel. 17. Which picture below shows the right situation of using NEVs in China? A. B. C. D. 18. What is the main idea of the passage? A. Xu Yuan’s happy journey during the 2025 National Day holiday. B. The plan to build more charging piles in China. C. The development of China’s NEV market and charging network. D. The difference between NEVs and traditional cars. Leo never went anywhere without his phone. He relied on its navigation (导航) app for every route, even the short walk from his classroom to the school library. “Why bother memorizing streets,” he would say, “when my phone knows them all?” His friends teased him about it, but Leo saw nothing wrong with letting technology do the work. One autumn Saturday, Leo joined a school hiking trip to West Hill. Confident in his phone’s guidance, he ignored the paper map the teacher handed out and followed his screen along a narrow trail. Halfway up, the battery died suddenly; the cold weather had drained (消耗) it faster than expected. Leo shook the phone, pressed every button, but the screen stayed black. For the first time, he had no idea where he was. The trail ahead split into three paths. Leo’s heart raced, and he almost panicked until an elderly man collecting fallen branches nearby noticed him. “Lost, young man?” the man asked calmly. Leo nodded. Instead of simply pointing at one path, the man sat down and showed him how to read the land: where moss (苔藓) grew thicker (which is usually found on the north side of trees), how the afternoon sun cast shadows toward the east, and which trail led downhill by following the sound of running water. “A phone tells you where to go,” the man said with a gentle smile, “but the world itself tells you where you are, if you pay attention.” Leo followed his instructions, observing the trees, listening to the stream, and feeling the wind on his face. Forty minutes later, he reached the meeting point safely. His classmates were staring at their screens, complaining that their signals kept dropping. Leo looked at the golden hills around him, and for the first time, he truly saw them. That evening, Leo did not rush to recharge his phone first. Instead, he sat by the window and drew a small map of the hike from memory, marking every turn with his own hand. He realized that a map drawn from experience would never go dark. 19. Why did Leo ignore the paper map the teacher gave to him? A. He completely trusted his phone’s navigation. B. He found the map too confusing to understand. C. He had already memorized the paths along the hill. D. He preferred hiking all by himself without any map. 20. What can we learn from Paragraph 3? A. Basic survival skills are of great importance for every student. B. Much dependence on phones may blind us to nature around us. C. Paper maps help hikers to read and understand the land quickly. D. Strangers are always willing to offer directions to the lost people. 21. What will Leo possibly do in his next hiking trip? A. Take a camera with him to record the beautiful scenery. B. Watch natural signs carefully to make sure of the direction. C. Ask the man who helped him to work as his personal guide. D. Advertise his newly drawn map to his classmates for money. It made me think of my hometown. Meyer’s writing took me back in time to Beijing many years ago. At that time, Meyer moved into a shared courtyard (庭院) home in one of Beijing’s oldest neighbourhoods, Dashilan, on one of its hutongs. There he taught English at a school and became the only Westerner living among local culture. This gave him a chance to get close to the local culture. In the book, Meyer describes the life in old Beijing and how the old houses made way for modern housing and shopping malls. However, even with these changes, Beijing people still keep traditions like putting up Spring Festival couplets (对联), and enjoying lanterns at the Lantern Festival. According to Meyer, it helped people hold onto their past. Besides Beijing’s past, Meyer also talks about changes in Beijing. I was born in Beijing in the 2010s, so I know more about the city’s modern side. C. 【答案】19. A 20. B 21. At the bookstore I often visited, a book caught my attention. It was The Last Days of Old Beijing by American writer Michael Meyer. The title suggested the city of Beijing.
