Entering high school is a major turning point for teens. We’ve prepared some of our favorite reads to help almost-freshmen (and their parents) get prepared for the period ahead.
Wonder
by R.J. Palacio
How many of us wish we had been kinder in high school? Would you go back and be more accepting, or aware of other people’s difficulties? I would. Help prepare your rising freshman to be the person you wish you had been by asking them to read Wonder. It’s in fact a middle grade book, but it’s never too late to raise our kids to be kind before they hit the high school halls.
When You Were Everything
by Ashley Woodfolk
Ashley Woodfolk, author of The Beauty That Remains, is also the author of When You Were Everything, about a best friendship between two 16-year-old girls, Layla and Cleo — and what happens when it falls apart. The story is told from two points in time — Then and Now — and offers a unique view on friendship.
Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie
by David Lubar
Wouldn’t it be great if you got a book on how to make it through high school? Scott Hudson thinks so, which is why he’s writing one for his soon-to-be brother or sister. To make sure his future little brother or sister has an easier time than he does, Scott covers everything from bullies (欺负) to how to survive on too little sleep.

根据原文Wonder部分“It’s in fact a middle grade book, but it’s never too late to raise our kids to be kind before they hit the high school halls.(它实际上是一本中年级儿童读物,但在孩子们踏入高中校园前培养他们善良的品质永远都不晚。)”
根据原文When You Were Everything部分“Ashley Woodfolk, author of The Beauty That Remains, is also the author of When You Were Everything, about a best friendship between two 16-year-old girls (The Beauty That Remains的作者Ashley Woodfolk同时也是When You Were Everything的作者,这本书讲述了两个16岁女孩之间最好的友谊)”可知,Ashley Woodfolk的书讲述了有关友谊的故事。
根据原文Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie部分“Wouldn’t it be great if you got a book on how to make it through high school?(如果有一本书告诉你如何度过高中生活,那不是很棒吗?)”以及原文Surviving High School: A Novel部分“Her first novel goes deep into the world of groups, classes, and craziness that is freshman year.(她的首部小说深入描绘高一的圈子、课堂和种种混乱日常。)”
B
The first thing I ever wrote that I was truly proud of was a letter to my father. I wrote it to him on Father’s Day. What I remember is how he reacted to that letter. He came to me, tears in his eyes, letter in his hand, and held me close and thanked me.
My dad was always encouraging my love of literature (文学). I wrote about an unforgettable experience I had on a trip with him, and he talked for weeks and months and years about how much he loved my writing about that experience. He has encouraged me from the beginning so writing became my way of making him proud.
One of my dearest childhood memories I have of my dad was during a big snowstorm in Monroe. My dad knew people wouldn’t drive carefully enough with the roads covered in snow. So he threw a chain (链条) into the back of his pickup, driving aimlessly around town. Sure enough, we came across cars in ditches (沟) and helpless owners. This was before cell phones — way before. Dad would pull up and tell these people that he’d have them out “in a jiffy.”
But it was what he did next that taught me my biggest lesson — it’s the thing that makes me try to be like him every single day. The owners of these cars would try to pay my dad. But he always refused, said goodbye to them, threw that chain back in the bed of the truck, and then we were off again, looking for someone else in trouble.
I can’t thank my father enough for encouraging me to be a better person. I write about him in all of my books. He was always there and still is.
4. How did the author’s father feel after receiving the letter?
A. Nervous. B. Crazy. C. Touched. D. Worried.
5. What does the author think of his father?
A. He had a sense of humor. B. He was very supportive.
C. He was proud and strong. D. He had a great interest in literature.
6. What do the underlined words “in a jiffy” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Very quickly. B. So secretly. C. Too differently. D. Quite obviously.
7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To show his deep love for writing.
B. To stress the special importance of family.
C. To remember his childhood spent with his father.
D. To express his thankfulness and admiration for his father.
C 5. B 6. A 7. D
根据第一段最后一句“He came to me, tears in his eyes, letter in his hand, and held me close and thanked me.(他走向我,眼里含着泪水,手里拿着信,紧紧抱住我并感谢我)”可知,父亲收到信后的反应是热泪盈眶并紧紧拥抱作者,这说明他非常感动。
根据第二段中的“My dad was always encouraging my love of literature (文学). I wrote about an unforgettable experience I had on a trip with him, and he talked for weeks and months and years about how much he loved my writing about that experience. He has encouraged me from the beginning so writing became my way of making him proud.(我父亲一直鼓励我对文学的热爱。
根据第三段语境“So he threw a chain (链条) into the back of his pickup, driving aimlessly around town. Sure enough, we came across cars in ditches (沟) and helpless owners. This was before cell phones — way before. Dad would pull up and tell these people that he’d have them out “in a jiffy.”(于是他把一条链条扔进皮卡后座,漫无目的地在城里兜风。 in a jiffy意为“立刻,马上”,与“Very quickly”意思一致。
结合最后一段“I can’t thank my father enough for encouraging me to be a better person.(我非常感谢父亲鼓励我成为一个更好的人)”可知,作者写这篇文章的根本目的是为了表达对父亲深深的感激与钦佩之情。
C
A good shower can relax not only your body but also your mind, unleashing (释放) streams of consciousness (意识流) and creativity.
Research shows that what is known as the “shower effect” also can occur outside the shower, and many of our best thoughts don’t happen at work or school — but occur while going about our days with ideas incubating (酝酿) in the background.
In a study, 98 professional writers and 87 physicists recorded their most creative ideas each day, as well as what they were doing and thinking when it struck them. While most of the ideas occurred at work, 20 percent of their most meaningful ideas came while doing something else—washing dishes or taking a shower. Notably, the ideas the writers and physicists had away from their jobs were self-assessed to be just as creative and important as the ones they had at work.
However, the shower effect on creativity is the product of mind-wandering, where your thoughts are anywhere but on the task at hand. Historically, researchers focused on the negative effects of mind-wandering, which can disrupt (扰乱) performance and have been associated with unhappiness. But the nature of the mind-wandering matters.
In another study, over 300 university students were first asked to come up with as many novel uses as possible for ordinary objects such as a brick or paper clip (曲别针) in 90 seconds. This is known as an alternative use task, which tests creativity. The students then watched a boring video. The activity gave time for the students’ ideas to incubate and for their minds to wander. When the students were tested again, their mind-wandering led to more creative ideas.
An activity such as taking a shower or a walk (or watching a romantic comedy video) “takes some of your attention so that they can influence your thoughts, but doesn’t take all of it so that you pay no attention to these creative ideas that are incubating in the background.” said Zachary Irving, author of the study.
8. What do we know about the shower effect?
A. It requires focused attention.
B. It fails to work outside the shower.
C. It enables people to have innovative ideas unconsciously.
D. It is the main cause of people’s poor performance at work.
9. How did the researchers conduct the study among writers and physicists?
A. They assessed their ideas at work.
B. They asked them to record their creative ideas.
C. They tested their creativity after they took a shower.
D. They required them to use an ordinary object creatively.
10. What does the study among university students show?
A. Mind-wandering can disrupt performance.
B. People’s thoughts are anywhere but on the task at hand.
C. Free-flowing thoughts in moderate task boost creativity.
D. Mind-wandering has been associated with unhappiness.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Why does the mind wander?
B. Why do we get our best ideas in the shower?
C. How can you become a more creative person?
D. How may your shower routine affect your health?
C 9. B 10. C 11. B
根据第一段“A good shower can relax not only your body but also your mind, unleashing (释放) streams of consciousness (意识流) and creativity.(一场畅快的淋浴不仅能放松你的身体,还能放松你的大脑,释放意识流和创造力)”和第二段“Research shows that what is known as the “shower effect” also can occur outside the shower, and many of our best thoughts don’t happen at work or school — but occur while going about our days with ideas incubating (酝酿) in the background. (研究表明,所谓的“淋浴效应”也可以在淋浴之外出现,我们许多最好的想法不是在工作或学习时产生的,而是在我们度过日常生活时,想法在潜意识中酝酿时产生的)”可知,“淋浴效应”能让人无意识地产生创新想法。故选C项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“In a study, 98 professional writers and 87 physicists recorded their most creative ideas each day, as well as what they were doing and thinking when it struck them. (在一项研究中,98位专业作家和87位物理学家每天记录他们最有创意的想法,以及这些想法出现时他们正在做什么和想什么)”可知,研究人员通过让作家和物理学家记录他们的创意想法来进行研究。故选B项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“In another study, over 300 university students were first asked to come up with as many novel uses as possible for ordinary objects such as a brick or paper clip (曲别针) in 90 seconds. This is known as an alternative use task, which tests creativity. The students then watched a boring video. The activity gave time for the students’ ideas to incubate and for their minds to wander. When the students were tested again, their mind-wandering led to more creative ideas.
通读全文,结合第一段“A good shower can relax not only your body but also your mind, unleashing (释放) streams of consciousness (意识流) and creativity.(一场畅快的淋浴不仅能放松你的身体,还能放松你的大脑,释放意识流和创造力)”、第二段“Research shows that what is known as the “shower effect” also can occur outside the shower, and many of our best thoughts don’t happen at work or school — but occur while going about our days with ideas incubating (酝酿) in the background. (研究表明,所谓的“淋浴效应”也可以在淋浴之外出现,我们许多最好的想法不是在工作或学习时产生的,而是在我们度过日常生活时,想法在潜意识中酝酿时产生的)”以及后文对相关研究的介绍,可知文章主要围绕为什么人们在淋浴等日常活动中能产生最好的想法展开,解释了“淋浴效应”。故B项“Why do we get our best ideas in the shower? (为什么我们在淋浴时能产生最好的想法?)”能概括文章内容,最适合做文章标题。故选B项。
D
Because of busy lifestyles and work stress, more Chinese people are now turning to AI tools like DeepSeek to talk about their problems. They share feelings with the chatbot and receive warm advice. This practice, known as “AI therapy (疗愈),” is becoming popular online. But can robots really replace human therapists?
Around the world, 45 percent of people who needed mind wellness care in 2024 did not get it because it was too costly or there weren’t enough doctors, according to Huntington Psychological Services. Daniel Lowd, an associate professor at the University of Oregon, believes AI could help fill this gap. “If people can find some support and ideas by talking to ChatGPT or chatbot, then I think that’s wonderful,” Lowd told Newsweek. Li Yong, a doctor at the Jiangsu Province Hospital, agreed with Lowd, saying that AI meets people’s basic needs for emotional support to a point.
However, AI has its disadvantages. Human therapists understand feelings deeply through face-to-face talks and create suitable treatment plans — something robots can’t fully copy. Dr. Liu Yang, a Beijing-based psychologist (心理学家), notes “An AI might recognize keywords like ‘divorce’ or ‘layoff’, but it cannot find out small emotional changes in tone or body language”. This point becomes important when dealing with a series of situations, where misunderstandings could be dangerous.
Another problem is safety. AI might act like a therapist without proper training or rules. It cannot match the level of responsibility that human therapists have. Experts believe the key to safe AI therapy is strict government control. For example, Wysa, an AI mental health app, follows strict medical standards in the UK.
Data privacy appears as another large concern (担忧). Users usually share personal details on AI platforms, yet few companies clearly state how this information is stored or used. In 2024, a major Chinese mental health app faced criticism when users found their chats were being analyzed for advertising algorithms (算法).
As AI becomes part of daily life, finding a balance between its benefits and risks is important. While AI offers quick help, human connection remains irreplaceable for serious emotional needs.
12. What makes people turn to “AI therapy”?
A. That AI therapy is warmer. B. That People feel much pressure.
C. That AI tools are free. D. That DeepSeek is popular.
13. What is the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A. AI may give dangerous advice because it cannot recognize any key words.
B. AI often misunderstands patients and hurts them in face-to-face talks.
C. AI fails to catch small emotional signs in tone and body language.
D. AI is only useful for simple talks but dangerous for all difficult ones.
14. Why does the writer mention the Wysa app?
A. To prove that Wysa is the most popular AI app in the UK.
B. To warn people that AI apps can be very dangerous.
C. To argue that AI apps do not need any strict rules.
D. To give an example of safe AI under rules.
15. What can we infer from the passage?
A. A balanced approach is needed for AI mental care.
B. AI is completely useless for basic emotional needs.
C. Government control is unnecessary for AI apps.
D. Privacy concerns are the only challenge for AI therapy.
B 13. C 14. D 15. A

第三段首句指出“However, AI has its disadvantages.(然而,AI有其缺点)”,随后通过对比人类治疗师和引用心理学家的话具体说明:AI虽然能识别关键词,但无法像人类一样捕捉到语气或肢体语言中微小的情感变化(it cannot find out small emotional changes in tone or body language)。
文章第四段中“Experts believe the key to safe AI therapy is strict government control.(专家认为,确保AI治疗安全的关键在于政府的严格监管)”提到专家认为安全的AI疗愈关键在于严格的政府管控,紧接着用“For example, Wysa, an AI mental health app, follows strict medical standards in the UK.(例如,AI心理健康应用Wysa在英国遵循严格的医疗标准)”引出Wysa这个应用,指出它在英国遵循严格的医疗标准。
根据文章最后一段首句“As AI becomes part of daily life, finding a balance between its benefits and risks is important.(随着AI成为日常生活的一部分,在它的好处和风险之间找到平衡是很重要的)”可以推断出,对待AI心理护理需要采取一种平衡的方法。

One afternoon after school, Mary and her brother, Keith, were eating at a cafe near their home. That afternoon, they had to share their table with another person. That person was a young lady in her twenties. After eating, she went to the restroom. Without realizing, she had left her handphone on the table. Five minutes later, she came out and walked out of the cafe without looking back.
Mary saw the handphone on the table. She quickly told Keith, “Keith, the girl left behind her handphone.”
Keith looked at the handphone. It took his breath away. It was one of the latest models on the market. Keith had always wanted a handphone. But his parents had told him, “You don’t need one. You can always use the house phone.”
He stared at it for some minutes. Then he said slowly, pausing on every word, “I want to take the handphone.”
Mary could not believe her ears. She merely stared at her brother. “You can’t! What if the owner comes to look for it?”
Having made the decision, Keith quickly grabbed the handphone and put it in his schoolbag. Then, he took Mary’s hand and led her out of the cafe quickly.
Once back home, Keith locked his house door with trembling hands. Inside his room, he took out the piece of beauty. Oh, he liked it so much. Now he had his own handphone. Soon, he was polishing it happily.
But Mary told him, “Keith, you cannot keep the handphone. What will you tell Father about this? He will ask you how you got the handphone.”
Keith said quickly, “I will say a friend lent it to me.”
Mary said, “Now you are lying too.” Oh dear! When had Keith turned so dishonest?
Then Mary saw a house phone number on the plastic cover of the handphone. “This is the girl’s phone number. Why don't we just call this number? We will talk to her and ask her to come and take back her handphone.” She was trying to talk some sense into him.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
That night, Keith turned over in bed from time to time. The shiny new handphone in his drawer felt like a heavy stone weighing on his conscience. Images of the girl’s anxious face kept flashing in his mind — what if she needed the phone for an emergency? What if she cried over losing it? Guilt twisted in his stomach, and he sat up abruptly, staring at the moonlight streaming through the window. Finally, he whispered to the darkness, “I have to give it back.”
Mary was very happy to hear that. She hugged Keith tightly and pointed to the phone number on the cover. “Let’s call her right now — she might still be awake worrying!” she urged. Half an hour later, the girl arrived at their doorstep, tears in her eyes. As she thanked them profusely, Keith placed the phone in her hands, his face warm but his heart lighter. Later, he found a small sticker in his bag from the girl: “Kindness shines brighter than any phone.” He smiled, realizing true happiness came not from possession, but from doing what was right.
