I knew even then that he was a bright young man with great potential, and a hunger for learning. But he struggled to apply what he had learned due to his autism (自闭症). Diagnosed (诊断) with Asperger’s syndrome (阿斯伯格综合症) in elementary school, Kevin scored well on tests. However, a huge part of school learning takes place not at a student’s individual desk, but in groups that require participation. For children like Kevin, that presents a big challenge. For a long time, we struggled to persuade Kevin to come out of his shell and join the class. He preferred doing activities alone, and hated classroom tasks that required teamwork, like lab experiments. He struggled with public speaking even in small groups, and didn’t want to try new things. You could tell that there was huge potential there — I never doubted his academic abilities. But at times many of us at the school worried about whether he’d ever be able to make full use of those abilities to build a future for himself. Over time, however, something changed. Slowly he began to want to try new things, and to work with people. He developed into a boy of humor, and started to participate in class and to let people get to know him. And he was gradually into the high school’s work-based learning program, where he learned about information technology — an area Kevin is always gifted in. In fact, in some ways, I think it was his experience with computers that brought him out of himself and helped him join the world. Finding something he was good at gave him the confidence he’d so badly needed. 4. What challenge did Kevin Sargeant have to face in school at first? A. He had low intelligence. B. He lacked the love for learning. C. He wasn’t used to team work. D. He couldn’t make friends with kids. 5. Which of the following words can best describe the changing Kevin? A. Kind and open-minded. B. Talented and responsible. C. diligent and dependent. D. Humorous and outgoing. 6. According to the author, what led to Kevin’s change? A. His experience with computers. B. His teacher’s encouragement. C. The requirement of teachers. D. The work-based learning program. 7. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage? A. A Lonely Talented Boy B. Out of the shell into the Sunshine C. The Magic of Computers D. Strength from the Surrounding World 【答案】4. C 5. D 6. A 7. 根据第三段“He preferred doing activities alone, and hated classroom tasks that required teamwork, like lab experiments.(他喜欢独自活动,讨厌实验这类需要团队合作的课堂任务。)” 根据第四段“Slowly he began to want to try new things, and to work with people. He developed into a boy of humor, and started to participate in class and to let people get to know him.(慢慢地他愿意尝试新事物、与人合作,变得幽默开朗,主动参与课堂,愿意让他人了解自己。)” 根据第四段“In fact, in some ways, I think it was his experience with computers that brought him out of himself and helped him join the world.(事实上在某种程度上,我认为正是接触电脑的经历让他走出自我,融入外界。)” 根据第三段“For a long time, we struggled to persuade Kevin to come out of his shell and join the class.(很长一段时间里,我们都努力劝说凯文走出孤僻的状态,融入班级集体。)” C Want to learn a new language or get A’s in college exams? Previous studies have shown that exercise can help stimulate the areas of the brain that convert (转换) new information into long-term memory. A new study has taken this information one step further and found the best time when exercise can help maximize learning. Building upon past research that found exercise releases biochemicals that improve mental function, scientists at Radboud University and the University of Edinburgh conducted a study to determine when exercise was most beneficial to learning. Participants — 72 healthy male and female adults — were first asked to perform a computer test that challenged their visual and spatial learning. After the test, all of the subjects watched nature documentaries, but two-thirds of them also exercised. Half of the exercisers did circuit training on an exercise bike for 35 minutes immediately after the test. The other half did the same exercise but not until four hours after they had been tested. Two days later, all of the participants returned to the lab for a recall test, and they were connected to MRI (磁共振成像) machines to assess their brain activity. The participants who exercised four hours after taking the computer test were able to recall what they had learned most accurately. Their brainwaves also showed more consistent levels of activity, indicating that their brains were less taxed to remember what they had learned. According to this research, the best time to exercise to improve learning is four hours after studying. But why? That’s one question the researchers have yet to answer. Another question left unanswered is the level of exercise that might best improve learning. I’ve run enough marathons to prove the fact that my brain is anything but sharp during or after a tough workout. But the researchers noted that light workouts might not give the brain enough of a biochemical boost to improve learning. 8. What did the new study aim to explore? A. When exercise is best for learning. B. What biochemicals are good for health. C. How brainwaves should be measured. D. Which area of the brain is the most active. 9. What were all the participants asked to do during the experiment? A. Train on bicycles. B. Do mathematics exercises. C. Play computer games. D. Watch films about nature. 10. Why did the participants return to the lab two days later? A. To do a medical examination. B. To have their memory tested. C. To get their workouts recorded. D. To finish their previous tasks. 11. What might the author’s marathon running prove? A. The findings of the study are reliable. B. Long-distance runners are often smart. C. Studies on the marathon are not enough. D. Hard exercise may not sharpen the brain. A 9. D 10. B 11. 根据第一段中“A new study has taken this information one step further and found the best time when exercise can help maximize learning.(一项新的研究更进一步,找到了锻炼有助于最大化学习效果的最佳时间)”可知,新研究旨在探索什么时候锻炼最有利于学习。故选A项。 根据第三段中“After the test, all of the subjects watched nature documentaries(测试后,所有受试者都观看了自然纪录片)”可知,实验要求所有受试者在实验过程中观看自然纪录片。 根据第四段中“Two days later, all of the participants returned to the lab for a recall test(两天后,所有参与者返回实验室进行回忆测试)”可知,参与者两天后返回实验室是为了进行记忆测试。 根据最后一段中“I’ve run enough marathons to prove the fact that my brain is anything but sharp during or after a tough workout.(我已经跑了足够多的马拉松来证明这样一个事实:在艰苦的锻炼过程中或之后,我的大脑一点也不敏锐)”可知,作者通过自己跑马拉松的经历证明,剧烈的锻炼可能不会使大脑变得敏锐。故选D项。 D People make a choice to volunteer for their community, but making it a graduation requirement takes away the meaning of volunteerism. Many states require students to perform a set number of volunteer hours to graduate. With recent talks about implementing (实施 ) this in Virginia City Public Schools, a critical question arises: if volunteering is mandatory (强制性的), is it truly volunteering? Required or not, volunteering helps other people who are in need and helps the community as a whole. Requiring students to volunteer will increase the number of people who serve their community, but people volunteer out of the kindness of their hearts. They should not be forced to volunteer by someone else. “When students are told what to do or think, they lose drive to do it because their beliefs are ignored,” according to Brillianto’s article “Why Volunteering Should Not Be a Requirement.” Another problem with forced volunteerism is that not all students have transportation. “I don’t think it should be required to graduate. I think it should be a choice like it already is, because some people just don’t have the ability or transportation to do that” said sophomore Leila Alpaugh. “Quality over quantity” also comes into play when it comes to volunteering. If forced to volunteer, some students who don’t care about the cause will weaken the passion of others who do, and it can end up causing problems for the organization and others who volunteer there. So, instead of making volunteering a requirement, schools should encourage students to talk to a guidance counselor (辅导员) about current service projects they could take part in. 12. What makes volunteering less meaningful? A. Limited service choices. B. Linking it to graduation. C. Boring volunteer classes. D. Recording service hours. 13. What does the author imply in paragraph 2? A. Forced volunteering helps few people. B. Forced volunteering becomes common. C. Volunteers’ real thoughts matter. D. Schools’rules have bad effects. 14. What does the author show by mentioning “transportation”? A. The importance of enough choices. B. The benefit in serving strangers. C. The trouble in reaching an agreement. D. The unfairness of forced volunteering. 15. What is the author’s attitude toward forced volunteering? A. Indifferent. B. Positive. C. Guarded. D. Negative. B 13. C 14. D 15. 根据第一段中“People make a choice to volunteer for their community, but making it a graduation requirement takes away the meaning of volunteerism.(人们选择为社区做志愿者,但将其作为毕业要求会剥夺志愿服务的意义。)” 根据第二段中“Requiring students to volunteer will increase the number of people who serve their community, but people volunteer out of the kindness of their hearts. They should not be forced to volunteer by someone else. “When students are told what to do or think, they lose drive to do it because their beliefs are ignored,” according to Brillianto’s article “Why Volunteering Should Not Be a Requirement.”(要求学生做志愿者会增加为社区服务的人数,但人们做志愿者是出于他们的善意。他们不应该被别人强迫做志愿者。Brillianto的文章《为什么志愿服务不应该是一种要求》指出:“当学生被告知要做什么或想什么时,他们就会失去动力,因为他们的信仰被忽视了。”)”可知,作者暗示志愿者的真实想法很重要。故选C。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中“Another problem with forced volunteerism is that not all students have transportation. “I don’t think it should be required to graduate. I think it should be a choice like it already is, because some people just don’t have the ability or transportation to do that” said sophomore Leila Alpaugh.(强迫志愿服务的另一个问题是,并不是所有的学生都有交通工具。大二学生莱拉·阿尔帕夫说:“我认为不应该把它作为毕业的必要条件。我认为这应该像现在一样是一个选择,因为有些人就是没有能力或交通工具去做这件事。”)”可知,作者提到“交通工具”是为了说明强迫志愿服务的不公平性,因为并不是所有的学生都有交通工具去做志愿服务。故选D。 【15题详解】 推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是最后一段中“So, instead of making volunteering a requirement, schools should encourage students to talk to a guidance counselor (辅导员) about current service projects they could take part in.(因此,学校不应该把志愿服务作为一项要求,而应该鼓励学生与辅导员讨论他们可以参加的当前服务项目。)” Your teen years are a time to learn about yourself and start thinking about your future. Strength from the Surrounding World C Want to learn a new language or get A’s in college exams? D People make a choice to volunteer for their community, but making it a graduation requirement takes away the meaning of volunteerism. B. Positive. C. Guarded. D. Negative. Your teen years are a time to learn about yourself and start thinking about your future.
