They say that nursing is one of the most sacred professions out there. I think that the saying is more than true. Nurses might be the only individuals on this earth that hold back their own tears to give a smile to others.
If you were asked to name history’s greatest nurses, you would almost certainly mention Florence Nightingale, the privileged woman who gave everything to serve the needy of her time.
Yet while many remember her as a nurse, few recognize her as the “borderline genius”. Born on May 12, 1820, Florence possessed a once-in-a-generation mind — a polymath who mastered several languages and pioneered statistical concepts still in use today. Her parents were different too. At that time, being female typically destined one for a domestic life of knitting, but her immensely wealthy father was really dedicated to the education of his two daughters.
On February 5, 1837, the teenage Florence declared that God had commanded her to end suffering in this world and this was when she joined nursing. Both parents objected fiercely; even her liberal father refused to accept it. Nursing wasn’t then a respected profession. For over twelve years, Florence persisted, unable to sway them. Only when she turned thirty, her father exhausted by resistance, did he finally send her to Germany for formal nursing training.
Her defining moment came in the Crimean War. Leading 38 nurses to a British military hospital, she faced cold rejection from doctors unwilling to work with women. Yet through steady determination, her team introduced cleanliness, care, and hope — reducing the death rate dramatically. Nightingale was known for carrying a lamp and checking on the soldiers at night, and that is how she earned herself the title of “the Lady with the Lamp”.
Though she passed away in 1910, her spirit endures through International Nurses Day and the Florence Nightingale Medal, honoring caregivers worldwide long after her death.
24.What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To reflect nurses’ emotional challenges. B.To introduce the topic by praising nurses.
C.To show the evolution of nursing. D.To compare nursing with other professions.
25.What do we know about Florence’s early experience?
A.She pursued nursing following God’s calling. B.She showed early talent in medicine.
C.Her parents opposed education for daughters. D.She trained, to be a nurse in England.
26.Why did Florence gain the name “the Lady with the Lamp”?
A.For tending to soldiers at night with a lamp. B.For lighting up hospital rooms.
C.For guiding others with a lamp in emergencies. D.For using a lamp during surgery.
27.Which of the following can best describe Florence?
A.Influential and honest. B.Legendary and easygoing.
C.Humorous and innovative. D.Intelligent and determined.

You can almost see scientists becoming excited or annoyed whenever a new Hollywood film rolls out, riddled with scientific errors. But one astronomer voiced a suggestion — maybe it’s OK if a movie makes mistakes in the facts, as long as it gets the big picture right about science and scientists.
Seth Shostak of the SETI Institute gains his own experience on Hollywood sets. His biggest problem wasn’t with the technology from other planets. Instead, he fought for the filmmakers to stop showing the scientists as data-calculating stereotypes “Real scientists don’t describe an object entering the solar system as notable for the fact that it was not moving in a normal orbit ... but moving at the speed of three times ten to the seventh meters per second,” said Shostak. “More likely, they would say that there was ‘a rock headed our way.’” Besides trying to make his fictional versions more approachable human, he emphasized the need for films to focus on conveying the scientific method rather than arguing about details.
Another scientist disagreed. Wayne Grody, a physician at UCLA, suggested that wrong description of medicine could confuse viewers. “Perhaps some people do take away more science than they should from their favorite films or television shows, although I’d like to see the court case where someone successfully charges the TV series Grey’s Anatomy with misleading them on a medical condition.”
However, Shostak’s point seems reasonable on the whole. Even medical educators have used shows to engage medical students to deal with bioethical issues. The power of big or small screen drama comes from persuasive characters that may represent brilliant doctors or scientific geniuses, but also have unusual human characteristics that allow viewers to empathize. Such stories serve the purpose of helping demystify science. After all, science fiction writer Isaac Asimov once remarked that science could become as mysterious and impossible to understand as magic. Storytellers may help shine a light into the foggy temple by creating characters that practice science.
28.What is Seth Shostak’s major concern about movie production?
A.The inaccuracy of alien technology. B.The rigid representation of scientists.
C.The insufficiency of the scientific terms. D.The misapplication of scientific methods.
29.What can be inferred from Wayne Grody’s quote?
A.Courts play a role in monitoring scientific content.
B.TV dramas are responsible for medical popularization.
C.Viewers are particular about scientific details in shows.
D.Medical errors in fictional works can do real-world harm.
30.What does the underlined word “demystify” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Advance. B.Prove. C.Illustrate. D.Complicate.
31.Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A.Scientific Accuracy in Films: Does It Really Matter?
B.Seth Shostak: A Scientific Consultant in Hollywood
C.The Hidden Risks of the Inaccurate Medical Dramas
D.Scientists’ Objections to Stereotypes in Some Movies

Supportive relationships with friends and family contribute positively to health and mental well-being. In contrast, toxic (有毒的) individuals — those who are overly aggressive or deliberately difficult — can become significant sources of stress. Chronic stress is known to produce various negative effects on both mental and physical health. Research has demonstrated that prolonged stress can accelerate aging and increase inflammation (炎症) throughout the body.
This raises a curious question: Do toxic people merely worsen our mental state, or might they also produce a measurable effect on biological age?
A newly published study sought to investigate this issue. Researchers used an advanced technique called DNA methylation to measure how old volunteers’ bodies really are. For each participant, they mapped social networks and identified whether they had any “hasslers”, people who caused the person too much stress and difficulty. Moreover, saliva samples (唾液样本) were collected from volunteers to assess biological age, and participants filled out additional questionnaires about their health.
The findings revealed that 28.8 percent of volunteers reported having at least one toxic individual in their social network, with women more likely than men to report such relationships. The analysis indicated that each toxic person was associated with a 1.5 percent acceleration in the aging process. On average, the biological age of volunteers with toxic social ties was nine months higher than that of individuals of the same chronological age who lacked such relationships. Interestingly, toxic family members or friends had stronger effects on aging than a toxic partner. Researchers suggest this may occur because the positive aspects of marriage, such as reduced loneliness, partially offset the negative impacts of a difficult partner.
The study clearly demonstrates that toxic friends or family members yield observable biological consequences. They not only reduce mental well-being but also accelerate aging and increase bodily inflammation. These findings suggest that for those seeking healthy aging and overall wellness, reducing contact with toxic individuals may be a highly important consideration.
32.Which person’s behavior is most toxic?
A.A parent limiting your screen time.
B.A teacher pointing out your mistakes.
C.A friend pushing you to achieve goals.
D.A colleague taking credit for your work.
33.How does the author introduce the topic of the passage?
A.By raising a question. B.By defining a concept.
C.By giving an example. D.By making a comparison.
34.What did researchers use DNA methylation to do?
A.To collect saliva samples. B.To map the social networks.
C.To identify toxic volunteers. D.To determine the biological age.
35.What can be learned from the study’s findings?
A.Toxics speed biological aging. B.Men face more difficult people.
C.Women report high social status. D.Life partners cause the most harm.

People perceive happiness differently, with some seeing the glass half full while others half empty. Sonja Lyubomirsky, a social psychologist, explained that happiness comprises positive emotions and life satisfaction. 36 Can you change your set range to be a happier person? She believes that we can change how we think and how we behave and also we can change our habits or develop a new habit. Happy people tend to have such certain habits.
Go with the “flow”. Be absorbed in what you do. “When you’re so fully engaged in what you’re doing that you don’t notice the passage of time, you are in a state called ‘flow’, which is associated with joy,” Lyubomirsky explained. “ 37 On the contrary, try something as casual and relaxing as completing a group project at the office or enjoying a hobby with your partner.”
38 When it comes to your happiness level, personal relationships have a bigger impact than money, a job title or even your health. “Spending more quality time with your partner, spouse, or kids, or reconnecting with old friends, are sure-fire ways to increase your own and others’ average levels of joy.” Lyubomirsky said “pick a relationship in need of strengthening, and invest time and energy in healing, cultivating and enjoying it.” 39
Practice random acts of kindness and express gratitude. Take a moment to do nice things for others. “Being kind to other people brings on a lot of positive results. It makes you feel generous and capable, leads you to feel grateful about your own situation, and gives you a greater sense of interconnectedness with the world,” Lyubomirsky said. “ 40 And, in turn, the benefit helps nurture your own self- esteem and help get you through the rest of the day or week.”
We hope these three tips help you elevate your happiness game.
A.Manage your circles.
B.Celebrate good news.
C.This small investment may go a long way.
D.It also gives joy to other people and leads them to like you more.
E.Researchers measure those components by asking people such questions.
F.The question for researchers returns to that glass half-full or half-empty issue.
G.You don’t have to compete in a high- risk game of tennis or climb Mount Everest.

Encouraged by my parents, I have always considered exercise part and parcel of my life. In my primary school years, I regarded exercise as a source of fun. As I entered my secondary school years, exercise started to be more than mere enjoyment. I started learning Muay Thai (泰拳) at a gym near my school. Exercising through Muay Thai became a way of relaxation. As I trained regularly, the hours spent kicking and punching (拳击) sandbags boosted my mood so that I would not experience anxiety and stress.
A particular experience at the Muay Thai gym one day, however, made me realize how important exercise was to my life, going beyond fun and relaxation. It was nearing the exam season, and many students were rushing to absorb as much last-minute information as possible. I had not gone to the gym for two weeks by then, busy preparing for the exams. There was an air of tension and anxiety. I was particularly upset that my recent maths revision was not going well, as I was getting many questions wrong in the practice papers given out by my teacher. I started feeling that I was not improving, and that I was meant to fail. I poured my worries to my trainer on the phone and he joked he had a trick up his sleeves. So I decided to head to the gym.
Despite starting off unsatisfactorily, my punches and kicks soon were on the right track. The moves of my kicks fueled me to be sharper and more precise in my techniques. Punching the sandbags was done accurately and swiftly as I maintained my power and form. Time flew, and an hour’s session felt like a mere 15 minutes. I was surprised to realize my frustration melted away once I put on my gloves.

Take care of your plants. They may scream if you treat them badly, according to an article published in a magazine in Cell. Plants can make sounds when they are stressed. Plants interact with insects and other animals all the time, and many of these insects and animals use sounds for communication, so it would be very inconvenient for plants not to use sounds at all. Lilach Hadany told BBC Science Focus. With this in mind, the research team started by recording plants' sounds. They divided the plants into three groups. One group wasn’t watered for five days, another group had the stems cut off and the last group remained untouched. The microphones caught sounds at a frequency of 40 to 80 kilohertz from the first two groups. The sounds grew louder and louder during the five days of water stress. They then began to decline as the plants dried out. The researchers haven’t yet discovered how the sounds are made. After the experiment, the team gathered the data and made software that could tell how plants feel. It could be useful for farmers in monitoring the conditions of their crops.

根据第一段“They say that nursing is one of the most sacred professions out there. I think that the saying is more than true. Nurses might be the only individuals on this earth that hold back their own tears to give a smile to others.(他们说护理工作是世上最神圣的职业之一。我认为这种说法非常正确。护士可能是这个世界上唯一能够强忍住自己的泪水,却还能向他人展露笑容的人)”可知,第一段的主要目的是通过赞扬护士来引入文章话题。故选B。
25.细节理解题。根据第四段“On February 5, 1837, the teenage Florence declared that God had commanded her to end suffering in this world and this was when she joined nursing.( 1837年2月5日,十几岁的弗洛伦斯宣称上帝命令她终结这个世界上的痛苦,也正是从那时起,她投身于护理事业)”可知,弗洛伦斯早期是受上帝的召唤而投身护理事业的。故选A。
根据倒数第二段“Nightingale was known for carrying a lamp and checking on the soldiers at night, and that is how she earned herself the title of “the Lady with the Lamp”.(南丁格尔因夜间手持灯盏巡视士兵而闻名,也正是由于这一事迹,她才获得了“提灯女神”的称号)”可知,弗洛伦斯被称为“提灯女神”是因为她曾在夜间为士兵们照明护理。故选A。
根据第三段“Born on May 12, 1820, Florence possessed a once-in-a-generation mind — a polymath who mastered several languages and pioneered statistical concepts still in use today.(弗洛伦斯于1820年5月12日出生,她拥有独一无二的非凡才智——一位多才多艺的学者,精通多种语言,并开创了至今仍在使用的统计学概念)”以及第四段“For over twelve years, Florence persisted, unable to sway them.(整整十二年里,弗洛伦斯一直坚持着,却始终未能说服他们)”可知,弗洛伦斯智慧且坚毅。

根据第二段中“Seth Shostak of the SETI Institute gains his own experience on Hollywood sets. His biggest problem wasn’t with the technology from other planets. Instead, he fought for the filmmakers to stop showing the scientists as data-calculating stereotypes (刻板印象).(SETI研究所的Seth Shostak在好莱坞片场有自己的经历。他最大的问题并非来自外星科技。相反,他努力争取让电影制作人停止把科学家塑造成只会计算数据的刻板形象。)”可知,Seth Shostak对电影制作的主要担忧是对科学家的刻板呈现。
29.推理判断题。根据第三段中“Wayne Grody, a physician at UCLA, suggested that wrong description of medicine could confuse viewers. “Perhaps some people do take away more science than they should from their favorite films or television shows, although I’d like to see the court case where someone successfully charges the TV series Grey’s Anatomy with misleading them on a medical condition.”(加州大学洛杉矶分校的医生Wayne Grody提出,对医学的错误描述可能会让观众产生困惑。“也许有些人确实从他们最喜欢的电影或电视节目中吸收了过多的‘科学’内容,尽管我倒想看看有谁能在法庭上成功起诉电视剧《实习医生格蕾》在某个医学问题上误导了他们。”)”可知,Grody认为影视作品中的医学错误可能给现实世界带来危害。
30.词句猜测题。根据最后一段中“Such stories serve the purpose of helping demystify science. After all, science fiction writer Isaac Asimov once remarked that science could become as mysterious and impossible to understand as magic. Storytellers may help shine a light into the foggy temple by creating characters that practice science.(这类故事有助于demystify科学。毕竟,科幻作家艾萨克·阿西莫夫曾说过,科学可能变得像魔法一样神秘而难以理解。讲故事的人可以通过创造从事科学的角色,帮助照亮这座迷雾笼罩的殿堂。)”可知,画线词“demystify”与后文“science could become as mysterious and impossible to understand as magic”形成对比,意为“使科学不再神秘、使科学易于理解”,与“Illustrate(阐明、说明)”最接近。
根据第一段中“But one astronomer voiced a suggestion — maybe it’s OK if a movie makes mistakes in the facts, as long as it gets the big picture right about science and scientists.(但一位天文学家提出了一个建议——也许电影在事实方面犯错没关系,只要它对科学和科学家的大方向把握正确。)”以及最后一段中“Storytellers may help shine a light into the foggy temple by creating characters that practice science.(讲故事的人可以通过创造从事科学的角色,帮助照亮这座迷雾笼罩的殿堂。)”可知,全文围绕电影中科学准确性的问题展开讨论,A项“Scientific Accuracy in Films: Does It Really Matter?(电影中的科学准确性:真的重要吗?)”

根据第二段“This raises a curious question: Do toxic people merely worsen our mental state, or might they also produce a measurable effect on biological age?(这就提出了一个有趣的问题:有毒的人仅仅是恶化了我们的精神状态,还是也会对我们的生物年龄产生可衡量的影响?)”
根据第三段“Researchers used an advanced technique called DNA methylation to measure how old volunteers’ bodies really are.(研究人员使用一种称为DNA甲基化的先进技术来测量志愿者的身体到底有多老。)”
根据第四段“The analysis indicated that each toxic person was associated with a 1.5 percent acceleration in the aging process.(分析表明,每个有毒的人与衰老过程加速1.5%有关。)”

36.根据上文“People perceive happiness differently, with some seeing the glass half full while others half empty. Sonja Lyubomirsky, a social psychologist, explained that happiness comprises positive emotions and life satisfaction.(人们对幸福的看法不同,有些人看到的是半满的杯子,而有些人看到的是半空的杯子。社会心理学家Sonja Lyubomirsky解释说,幸福包括积极的情绪和生活满意度)”以及后文“Can you change your set range to be a happier person? She believes that we can change how we think and how we behave and also we can change our habits or develop a new habit. Happy people tend to have such certain habits.(为了成为一个更快乐的人,你能改变你的设定范围吗?
37.根据后文“On the contrary, try something as casual and relaxing as completing a group project at the office or enjoying a hobby with your partner.(相反,尝试一些随意和放松的事情,比如在办公室完成一个小组项目,或者和你的同伴一起享受一个爱好)”可知,后文提到了相反的做法是尝试一些随意和放松的事情,推测本句是在说明从事冒险活动。
38.根据后文“When it comes to your happiness level, personal relationships have a bigger impact than money, a job title or even your health. “Spending more quality time with your partner, spouse, or kids, or reconnecting with old friends, are sure-fire ways to increase your own and others’ average levels of joy.” Lyubomirsky said “pick a relationship in need of strengthening, and invest time and energy in healing, cultivating and enjoying it.”(当涉及到你的幸福水平时,人际关系比金钱、职位甚至你的健康都有更大的影响。“花更多的时间与你的同伴、配偶或孩子在一起,或者与老朋友重新联系,这些都是提高你自己和他人平均快乐水平的可靠方法。”柳博米尔斯基说:“选择一段需要加强的关系,投入时间和精力来修复、培养和享受它。”)”可知,这一整段的大意是经营一段良好的人际关系可以提升人的幸福感,与A选项“Manage your circles”这一段落主题句构成解释关系。故A选项“管理好你的圈子”符合语境,故选A。
39.根据上文“Lyubomirsky said “pick a relationship in need of strengthening, and invest time and energy in healing, cultivating and enjoying it.”(柳博米尔斯基说:“选择一段需要加强的关系,投入时间和精力来修复、培养和享受它。”)”
40.根据上文“Practice random acts of kindness and express gratitude. Take a moment to do nice things for others. “Being kind to other people brings on a lot of positive results. It makes you feel generous and capable, leads you to feel grateful about your own situation, and gives you a greater sense of interconnectedness with the world,” Lyubomirsky said.(偶尔做些善事,表达感激之情。

Compared with many traditional retailers,存在比较范围,需要用形容词great的比较级形式greater修饰名词importance。
固定搭配cite sth. as sth.
固定搭配an average of...

Dear Jim,
Delighted to hear that you are interested in the Green Living Initiative in our city, I’m willing to share more information with you.
This city-wide campaign was launched last month to raise public awareness about environmental protection and promote low-carbon lifestyles. As a participant, I joined in a community cycling event. I, together with some other residents, cycled along a designated route, waving flags advocating riding bikes. Though tired, I felt proud to be part of this collective effort, which would make a difference to our urban environment.
I believe this initiative will help create a more sustainable city.
Yours,
Li Hua

67.As I concluded the session, my trainer approached me. “I saw how you got off to a rocky start just now with your kicks and punches, but you worked your best as time went by. You know, exercising and maths aren’t that different. I saw that determination in you. Why don’t you apply it to maths?” At that moment, all my confusion and anxiety ceased. It dawned on me how the simple act of exercising translated all my uneasiness into lessons for growth and self-improvement. Feeling relieved, I walked out of the gym.
The next day, stepping into the classroom, I pulled out the maths practice papers confidently. I took a deep breath, settled myself like putting on gloves and started to analyze the questions. Challenging as they still were, I was determined to tackle them, one at a time. Surprisingly, I figured out some of them, and this time I definitely punched maths in the face. I resolved that I needed to keep practicing the maths questions, stay focused and aim for accuracy.
