Wang Xuan is a Chinese scientist. He was called “Modern Bi Sheng” and won China’s top science award in 2001.
In the 1970s, Chinese scientists faced a serious problem. There were too many characters to store in early computers. But Wang found a smart method to describe the shapes of Chinese characters. By 1985, the “Huaguang Ⅱ” system became China’s first practical laser typesetting (激光照排) system. Since 1993, Chinese printing has completely entered the “digital printing era”.
Laser typesetting works in four easy steps. First, the computer turns every Chinese character into many tiny black dots (点). Second, a thin laser beam (激光束) writes these dots onto film by shining light where the dots should be. Third, the film is placed on a metal plate and UV (紫外线的) light shines through it, making the words hard on the plate. Finally, ink sticks to the hardened (变硬的) words and is pressed onto paper, so thousands of clean pages are printed quickly.
We’ll always remember Wang Xuan, the man who changed Chinese printing technology.
1. What do Chinese people call Wang Xuan?
A. Modern Bi Sheng. B. The Greatest Scientist. C. A Perfect Labor. D. A Space Star.

Have you ever heard of wind power (能量)? It turns moving air into clean energy. What if the energy from moving people could be used as power? Engineers have made it possible. They have created technology that can catch and use the energy from human movement, also called human kinetic energy (人体动能).
Back in 2014, 200 special boards were put under the grass of a football field in Brazil, making it the first ground to catch “player power”. As the players run around, the boards convert the kinetic energy into electricity (电) from every footstep.
In 2022’s world tour, the band Coldplay also made use of the crowd’s movement. Their fans powered the concert by riding on special bikes, successfully producing electricity.
Nowadays, this new technology of using people power has been popular around the world. Kinetic flooring has now been used in a subway station in Sweden and a busy pedestrian street(人行道)outside the White House in America. Human kinetic energy makes it to school, too. Simon Langton Grammar School in England has a hallway fitted with kinetic boards. When students walk or run on it, their movement creates electricity.
From certain places to public areas, human kinetic energy is turning out to be a clean and valuable power. This creative technology does more than provide power—it also lights up a promising path to a greener future.
6. Why does the writer mention “wind power” in Paragraph 1?
A. To show engineers’ great ability. B. To stress wind power’s importance.
C. To explain how wind power works. D. To introduce human kinetic energy.
7. The underlined word “convert” in Paragraph 2 probably means “__________”.

Desertification (沙漠化) is a big problem in some parts of China, but people have found many ways to fight it. Here are some methods Chinese people use to control deserts and turn them into green land.
First, planting trees and grass is the most common way. Their roots help hold the soil together and stop the sand from moving. For example, the “Great Green Wall” project in northern China has planted millions of trees to stop the spread of deserts. Grass is also planted to cover the sand and prevent the wind.
Second, using straw checkerboards (草方格) is a smart idea. People lay straw in square patterns (图案) on the sand. These squares break the wind and keep the sand from spreading. Over time, plants can grow inside these squares, making the land greener.
Third, building sand barriers (障碍) helps prevent the wind. These barriers reduce wind speed and protect nearby farmland and villages from sandstorms.
Another method is water-saving technology. In dry areas, people use drip irrigation (滴灌) to water plants. Drip irrigation, for example, sends water directly to plant roots, reducing waste. This helps plants grow even in very dry conditions.
Finally, education plays an important role. The government has made rules to protect the environment, and schools teach students why it’s important to stop desertification.
Thanks to these efforts, many deserts in China have become greener.
11. What is the main idea of the second paragraph?
A. Planting trees and grass helps prevent sand from moving.
B. Planting grass is more important than planting trees.
C. All kinds of grass can grow in deserts.
D. The “Great Green Wall” project has already planted hundreds of trees.
12. How do straw checkerboards help fight desertification?
A. They collect water from the air. B. They provide food for animals in the desert.
C. They stop the wind and keep sand from moving. D. They make the desert look very beautiful.
13. What does the underlined word “This” refer to?
A. Sending water directly to plant roots. B. Reducing waste.
C. The sand barrier. D. The straw checkerboard.
14. What can we infer from the text?
A. Using straw checkerboards is the best way to stop sand. B. Education can solve desertification completely.
C. Drip irrigation wastes plenty of water. D. Without human efforts, deserts will keep spreading.
15. Which would be the best title for this text?
A. The Problems of Deserts in China B. How China Fights Desertification
C. The Best Way to Plant Trees in Deserts D. Sandstorms in Northern China
When Meera Chandran visited her homeland, she discovered that her ancestral land was covered with Lantana Camara, a plant that is able to kill native plants and damage (破坏) the ecological balance. Meera, who has always been interested in ecology (生态), decided to clean up the land to take the plants away from it.
Instead of using the earliest method of buying an earth mover, she asked some farmers to pull out the plants by hand. “If the seeds of Lantana Camara are covered with sunlight when earth is moved, it would promote their growth. Also, using an earth mover would damage the natural plants of the land,” says Meera.
So the land was cleared using the cut root-stock method (截根法), which means cutting the roots 5 – 7cm below the earth to control its ability to spread. Next, she turned the land back into a forest area by planting native plants.
This was not an easy task. It took three years to clear Lantana Camara away and two more years to plant native plants. Halfway through Meera decided to turn this into an official action and set up Forest First Smith to protect native plants and encourage farmers to grow different native plants in farmlands.
“We have protected over 150 kinds of native plants of Western Ghats so far. The plants have been planted in an area of more than 121m² in Kerala’s Wayanad and Karnataka’s Kodagu,” says the protector.
But Meera says this is never a single-handed project. All these became a reality with the support from the state forest departments, local communities and like-minded persons. From 3–5 workers to more than 40 from the communities today, the organization has grown greatly.
16. How did Meera feel when she saw her ancestral land?
A. Excited. B. Curious. C. Angry. D. Worried.
17. Why didn’t Meera use an earth mover?
A. She didn’t think it was helpful. B. She didn’t have enough money.
C. She wanted to help farmers to make money. D. She wanted to study the natural plants of the land.
18. What did Meera realize when clearing her ancestral land halfway?
A. She had used a wrong method. B. She should cut Lantana Camara’s roots completely.
C. She should do more for ecology there. D. She had caught the attention of some officials.
19. What can we know about Forest First Smith?
A. It was set up by Meera and the state forest department.
B. It may have a bright future with more local people joining in.
C. Its workers are environmental protectors from all over the world.
D. It has donated over 150 kinds of native plant seeds to local farmers.
20. What does Meera mean by saying “this is never a single-handed project”?
A. It is not a short-term project.
B. She received a lot of help with her project.
C. She faced great difficulties when setting up her project.
D. Her project isn’t the only project that protects the environment.
