International E-Waste Day takes place every year on October 14. It aims to highlight the problems of electronic waste. In 2023, it focused on “invisible” e-waste—— things most people don’t think of as electronics.
Electronic waste, or e-waste, is the name given to old electronic devices that get thrown away. These can include old computers, phones, TVs, as well as all kinds of other electronic devices. E-waste is a big problem. While electronics can make life easier and more entertainment, the devices aren’t easy on the environment.
As newer and more advanced devices come out, lots of electronics are thrown away, instead of being recycled. These things often end up in landfills, where the chemicals inside them may be a danger to the environment. Electronics can have dangerous materials like lead(铅) or mercury(水银). If these materials get into the ground or water, the pollution can cause serious problems.
A group known as WEEE asked researchers from the United Nations to study a kind of e-waste that’s often not noticed. The WEEE calls this type“invisible” e-waste. The UN study shows that of all the 61 million tons of e-waste in a year, about 1/6 is“invisible”, and that the value of this unseen waste is worth about $9.5 billion a year.
The surprising type leading the invisible e-waste group is toys. Worldwide, about 7.3 billion electronic toys are thrown away each year. These include toys like car racing sets, electric trains, musical toys and drones. In all, toys make up about 35% of invisible e-waste.
But the problem is far larger than just toys. The UN report shows that other everyday things like home alarms, smoke alarms, power tools and computer cables are also big sources of invisible e-waste. The report says that 36% of the world’s invisible e-waste comes from these types.
Nowadays, more and more people—— and governments—— know about the harm of e-waste, and they will make a greater effort to make sure electronics get reused or recycled.
46.Why is e-waste a big problem?
A.Because it’s difficult to collect it. B.Because it costs people too much money.
C.Because it takes up too much space. D.Because it pollutes the environment.
47.What does the underlined word“landfills” mean?
A.Junk yards. B.Playgrounds. C.Public places. D.Gardens.
48.How many tons of invisible e-waste are there in a year?
A.About 4 million tons. B.About 6 million tons.
C.About 8 million tons. D.About 10 million tons.
49.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Few people will pay attention to invisible e-waste.
B.More landfills will be built to take in invisible e-waste.
C.More invisible e-waste will be thrown away everywhere.
D.More actions will be taken to reduce the harm of e-waste.
50.The purpose of the passage is to .
A.tell the purpose of International E-Waste Day B.call on people to use fewer electronics
C.draw attention to invisible e-waste D.explain the meaning of invisible e-waste
【答案】46.D 47.A 48.D 49.D 50.C

I think studying math can be divided into four key parts: textbooks, practising and improving weaknesses, problem-solving, and problem structure. Each part plays an important role in helping students master math skills and perform well in exams.
Textbooks are mainly used for learning about concepts and formulas (概念和公式). Understanding them well helps build a strong knowledge system. However, many students make a common mistake—they jump straight into doing lots of exercises without truly understanding the basic ideas. In fact, we should read textbooks carefully again and again first. While reading, taking simple notes will also help you remember key points better.
As for practising and improving weaknesses, it is best to use a timer when you work on exercise sets. Practise fill-in-the-blank and essay questions (论述题) on your own with a timer. This not only helps you get used to the time pressure in real exams but also allows you to find your problem areas more easily. These can be seen as your weaknesses, so you should set aside some extra time to practise in those areas.
When it comes to problem-solving in an exam, it is very important to look through the whole exam paper from start to finish quickly before you start writing. If you don’t know how to solve a problem at first, just leave it for later. Don’t waste too much time working on the hardest questions at the beginning. A smart strategy (策略) is to finish all the easy problems first. This way, you can make sure you get those points quickly. After that, you can go back to deal with those difficult ones with the remaining time and a clearer mind.
As for problem structure, difficult problems are often built on layers of simple problem-solving strategies. When you are working through a tough problem, you can try to break it down into smaller, easier steps. For example, you can ask yourself: What is given? What do I need to find? What formulas can I use? Big exams like Gaokao usually test students on key knowledge points to make sure they have a solid understanding of the subject.
In conclusion, the key to math lies not in how many hours you spend, but in how well you use them. By following these four parts, you can improve both your skills and your confidence in math.
51.What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Exams. B.Concepts and formulas. C.Different exercises. D.Key points.
52.How can we improve our weaknesses according to the text?
A.By leaving them for later.
B.By bringing a timer with us all the time.
C.By learning concepts and formulas in the textbooks.
D.By finding them out and setting more time to practise them.
53.What’s the writer’s advice on problem structure?
A.Paying no attention to the key knowledge points.
B.Dividing hard problems into simpler parts.
C.Finishing hard problems first to get high marks.
D.Spending more time working on the hardest questions.
54.What does the underlined sentence mean in the last paragraph?
A.Hard work is not needed in studying math.
B.Only smart students can learn math well.
C.Using proper methods is as important as effort.
D.Working hard is more important than working smart.
55.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To tell students that math is too difficult to learn well.
B.To share some useful strategies for studying math effectively.
C.To encourage students to spend more time on math exercises.
D.To explain why textbooks are more important than practice.
【答案】51.B 52.D 53.B 54.C 55.B
【导语】本文介绍了学习数学的四个关键部分,包括课本、练习与改进弱点、解题及问题结构,旨在分享有效学习数学的策略和方法。

53.细节理解题。根据第五段“you can try to break it down into smaller, easier steps.”可知,作者建议把难题分解成更简单的部分。
54.词句猜测题。划线句出现在最后一段“the key to math lies not in how many hours you spend, but in how well you use them.”,意为数学的关键不在于花多少小时,而在于如何有效利用时间,即使用合适的方法和努力同样重要。
55.主旨大意题。根据第一段“I think studying math can be divided into four key parts… Each part plays an important role…”及全文内容可知作者写作目的是分享有效学习数学的策略。

Mount Vesuvius broke out in 79 AD, ending the Roman cities Pompeii and Herculaneum. In 1752, workers digging in Herculaneum found a home that had belonged to a rich family. Inside, workers discovered a large number of scrolls. Most of the scrolls were made from papyrus a paper-like material. The heat from the volcano had burned the scrolls so much that they looked like thick pieces of charcoal.
The scrolls are so weak that just touching them could make them fall apart. So scientists have been looking for ways to read the scrolls without opening them. Brent Seales, a computer scientist at the University of Kentucky, has been working on this study for over 20 years.
Dr Seales has developed a method of using a special scanner to take 3-D X-ray pictures of a papyrus scroll. Then he uses a computer program to “open” the scroll and get pictures of what it looks like inside. His team once used this method to read a burnt scroll found near the Dead Sea.
Though Dr Seales was making progress, it was slow going. Then Dr Seales met with two businessmen. They had the idea of creating a contest for discovering the meaning of the scrolls. The contest, called the Vesuvius Challenge, was announced in March 2023.
The contest offered large prizes to people who solved certain challenges in opening the scrolls. About 1,500 teams participated in the contest. These people shared information as they made progress, so everyone could build on those ideas.
In August, 2023, Casey Handmer found a pattern that could show where the ink had been on the scrolls. Following Mr Handmer’s lead, Luke Farritor found a whole word—“porphyras”, which means “purple”. This was the first word ever read from these ancient scrolls. Soon afterward, Youssef Nader used a different method to find the same word. For their efforts, Mr Handmer and Mr Nader each won $10,000. Mr Farritor won $40,000.
