Last spring, my neighbor Donna and I, both in our seventies, spent several hours in the glorious sunshine enjoying the new season. When it was time to sit down and relax, Donna pulled out her red metal chair from her garage, and I sat on an overturned plastic bucket (桶). It was fun to catch up on the news that we had missed during the long winter indoors.
However, over the next few days, it turned out that we needed more than a chair and a bucket which were not quite comfortable. Donna decided we needed a bench. After dismissing unsuitable options from local stores, she found a perfect one online. The next day it arrived. Excitedly, she opened the box and started putting it together. We proudly high fived each other as the pieces joined up and the bench started to look like one. After a few minutes’ assistance from a neighbour, it was complete. What’s more, it was the perfect fit for two 70-somethings to carry on late afternoon chats.
Soon, the bench attracted other neighbors. One day, someone called out from the sidewalk, “What do you do on that bench?” Quick-thinking Donna called back, “It’s our ‘Thinking Bench’! We think about important things happening in our lives.” Then, the name gradually evolved — after one neighbor sat alone deep in thought, he declared it a “Decision-Making Bench”; another time, when Donna was caught napping, she insisted she was “meditating (冥想)”, adding yet another name.
Last fall, with the temperature falling, we came to the end of sitting outdoors. We were faced with one dilemma-what to do about it in the winter? Well, we sat down and thought and meditated and decided to put it in Donna’s garage for the winter.
When I glimpsed it a few times over the next months, the bench sat lonely, holding empty flower pots, and some flat, old boxes. But now after a long winter, spring flowers are ready to bloom in the warm sunshine, and we neighbors are ready to welcome“The Bench” back into our lives.
4. Why did Donna decide to replace the chair and bucket?
A. To avoid unsuitable choices. B. To get better seating for chats.
C. To attract more neighbors. D. To adapt to warmer weather.
5. How did the bench get its various names?
A. From items placed on it. B. From seasonal discussions.
C. From Donna’s creative ideas. D. From users’ activities on it.
6. Why are pots and boxes mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To suggest the flowers would soon be planted.
B. To explain why the bench needed winter storage.
C. To describe the bench’s practical use in winter.
D. To show the bench was not serving its purpose.
7. What does “The Bench” represent at the story’s end?
A. A symbol of community bonds. B. A solution to the aging problem.
C. A reminder of the past winter. D. A memory of a valued online order.
【答案】4. B 5. D 6. D 7. A

Donna decided we needed a bench.(然而,在接下来的几天里,事实证明我们所需要的不只是一把椅子和一个水桶,它们并不是十分舒适。唐娜觉得我们需要一张长椅)”以及“What’s more, it was the perfect fit for two 70-somethings to carry on late afternoon chats.(而且,它非常适合两位七旬老人在下午晚些时候闲谈)”可知,唐娜更换椅子和水桶是为了获得更舒适的落座环境、更好地闲谈。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“It’s our ‘Thinking Bench’! We think about important things happening in our lives.(这是我们的‘思考长椅’!我们思考生活中发生的重要事情)”、“he declared it a ‘Decision-Making Bench’(他称它为‘决策长椅’)”以及“she insisted she was ‘meditating (冥想)’, adding yet another name(她坚称自己正在‘冥想’,又为它增添了一个新名字)”可知,长椅的多个名字来源于使用者在长椅上的不同活动。

An economist, Adam Smith, famously wrote that “it is not from the benevolence (慈善)of the butcher, the brewer or the baker, that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own self-interest.” Like Smith, many economists today believe that one’s self-interest is what drives competition and growth in market economies. Yet, in an increasingly interconnected society, it is even more crucial to have collaborative skills. Thus we should encourage cooperation to better prepare children for the future.
Firstly, in the present age marked by the transformative potential of technology to facilitate interactions, cooperation is an especially prized soft skill to have. As a research study proves, soft skills such as good communication and empathy consist of qualitative indicators of outstanding employees as compared to technical skills or knowledge. In contrast, excessively (过分地)competitive and individualistic behaviour may fracture social relations in the community of co-workers and since no man is an island, even the most competent employee will not be able to pursue his goals effectively without the help of others who are able to share a common vision and understanding.
Moreover, encouraging cooperation increase a healthy sense of self-esteem in children that better prepares them for the competitive working world. Many modern societies today are consumed by an obsessive drive for success and the pressure to perform has infiltrated both classrooms and offices alike. The consequences of the fierce competitive culture include higher rates of anxiety and depression among university students and office workers, which are all counterproductive. Teamwork can help a maturing individual realise that each has his or her own unique set of abilities to bring to the table and that another person’s strengths do not in any way diminish (降低)the value of his or her talents. Thus, cooperation can affirm the self-worth of children by correcting the violent insight that winning or paper achievement is an exclusive (唯一)measure of success in life.
However, critics may claim that in a cutthroat world, adapting to competition should be of supreme priority in education and parenting. To achieve one’s deepest ambitions, such as to become a medical student, or to create a tech start-up, one has to adopt competition by actively fighting for opportunities and distinguishing oneself from others. Nevertheless, since passion can already stimulate children to work hard to fulfill their ambitions, the need to encourage competition may be at the end of the day. As much as external competition can drive people to pursue excellence, internal motivation is at least equally or arguably even more essential, and collaboration plays an instrumental role in helping one uncover one’s tendency and motivations.
8. What can be inferred from Adam Smith’s words?
A. Our society is increasingly interconnected.
B. Our dinner is made out of the regards to markets.
C. Self-interest pushes the development of economies.
D. The butcher, the brewer or the baker is not sympathy.
9. What does the underlined word “fracture” mean in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Deepen. B. Establish. C. Maintain. D. Damage.
10. Which of the following might the author agree with?
A. Paper achievement is an exclusive measure of success.
B. Confidence and ambitions can be achieved through cooperation.
C. Actively fighting for distinguishing oneself is a healthy competition.
D. Competition is not essential for people to pursue excellence.
11. What is the author’s purpose of writing this passage?
A. To introduce parents the advantages of cooperation.
B. To inform parents to balance cooperation and competition.
C. To persuade parents to care about their children’s education.
D. To tell parents to encourage their children to learn to cooperate.
【答案】8. C 9. D 10. B 11. D

【导语】这是一篇议论文。文章从三个方面陈述了合作精神对孩子的重要性,并呼吁父母鼓励他们的孩子学会合作。
【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段的“Like Smith, many economists today believe that one’s self-interest is what drives competition and growth in market economies. (像史密斯一样,今天的许多经济学家认为,在市场经济中,个人利益是推动竞争和增长的因素)”可知,像史密斯一样,今天很多经济学家认为个人利益是推动经济增长的因素。由此推知,史密斯的那句话“it is not from the benevolence (慈善)of the butcher, the brewer or the baker, that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own self-interest.(我们期待晚餐,不是因为屠夫、酿酒商或面包师的仁慈,而是因为他们对自身利益的考虑)”意在说明个人利益推动经济的发展。故选C。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段的“As a research study proves, soft skills such as good communication and empathy consist of qualitative indicators of outstanding employees as compared to technical skills or knowledge.(一项研究表明,与技术技能或知识相比,良好的沟通和同理心等软技能构成了优秀员工的质量指标)”结合in contrast可知,下文内容应与上文形成对比。由此猜测划线部分所在句子“excessively (过分地)competitive and individualistic behaviour may fracture social relations in the community of co-workers and since no man is an island”意为“过度竞争和个人主义行为可能会破坏同事社区中的社会关系”,即fracture意为“破坏”,与damage同义。故选D。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段的“Moreover, encouraging cooperation increase a healthy sense of self-esteem in children that better prepares them for the competitive working world. (此外,鼓励合作能增进儿童的健康自尊感,使他们更好地为竞争激烈的工作世界做好准备)”和最后一段的“Nevertheless, since passion can already stimulate children to work hard to fulfill their ambitions, the need to encourage competition may be at the end of the day. As much as external competition can drive people to pursue excellence, internal motivation is at least equally or arguably even more essential, and collaboration plays an instrumental role in helping one uncover one’s tendency and motivations.(然而,既然激情已经能激励孩子们努力工作以实现他们的雄心壮志,鼓励竞争的需要可能是在一天结束的时候。就像外部竞争可以驱使人们追求卓越一样,内部动机至少是同等重要的,甚至可以说更重要,合作在帮助人们发现自己的倾向和动机方面发挥了重要作用)”推知,作者认为信心和雄心可以通过合作来实现。故选B。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文可知,文章主要说明了培养合作精神对孩子的重要性:是一种非常重要的软技能,能帮助孩子建立信心,有助于孩子实现雄心。结合第一段的“Yet, in an increasingly interconnected society, it is even more crucial to have collaborative skills. Thus we should encourage cooperation to better prepare children for the future.(然而,在一个日益相互关联的社会中,拥有协作技能更为关键。因此,我们应该鼓励合作,让儿童更好地为未来做好准备)”推知,作者写这篇文章的目的是呼吁父母鼓励他们的孩子学会合作。故选D。

Getting old might not be something that's yet to cross your mind. But ageing is inevitably going to get the better of us one day, so it's something I'm sure we'd all like control. It would be great to have a long, healthy and happy life, and that's why scientists are constantly seeking out evidence that will show us what we need to do to achieve longevity.
We all know that regular exercise is good for us.In recent years we're been told to aim to walk 10,000 steps a day to remain healthy, although other advice to do three brief 10-minute walks a day is thought to be even more effective. But the latest piece of research might put a spring in your step if you're someone who walks at a fast pace. That's because, according to scientists, the speed at which people walk in their 40s is a sign of how much their brains, as well as their bodies, are ageing.
The BBC's Philippa Roxby writes that tests on 1,000 people from New Zealand born in the 1970s found that slower walkers tended to show signs of "accelerated ageing: Their lungs, teeth and immune systems were in worse shape than those who walked faster. And to add insult to injury, the study found not only did slower walkers' bodies age more quickly, their faces looked older and they hand smaller brains.Professor Terrie E Moffitt, lead author of the study, told the BBC: "It found that a slow walk is problem sign decades before old age:
This might be seen as a wake - up call for people with a slower pace who might feel it's time to work out and get fitter. But it might be too late; researchers writing in JAMA Network Open say they were able to predict the walking speed of 45 - year- olds using the results of intelligence, language and motor skills tests from when they were aged three. They also suggest that even in early life, there are signs showing which people will go on to have a healthier life.
So, what's the point of knowing that a slower walking pace might mean a smaller brain? Well, researchers say measuring walking speed at a younger age, and understanding what this might mean, could be a way of testing treatments to slow human ageing. This might help us make lifestyle changes while we're still young and healthy.Taking steps to prolong a good mental and physical state is a no brainer!
12. The underlined part in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to______.
A. withdraw your footsteps B. accelerate your pace
C. decrease your walking speed D. highlight your fast movement
13. What can be learned from the study by Philippa Roxby and Terrie E Moffitt?
A. Due to increased ageing problem, people become less physically healthy which leads to their slower walking.
B. When people choose to walk fast, they tend to look younger than when they choose to walk slowly.
C. Slow walking can be probably used to predict aging problem decades before one grows old.
D. People with small brains walk more slowly than those with big brains.
14. What can we infer from the passage?
A. We will definitely try to find ways to make us healthier.
B. By checking one's walking speed at a young age, we can prevent fast aging from happening.
C. If one walks slowly, there's no chance that he will live a long life.
D. The outcomes of people's IQ tests can provide information for us to foresee one's walking speed.
15. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Researches on Slow Walking B. Slow Walking VS Fast Walking
C. Slow Walking and Ageing D. Why Slow Walking ages us
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. A 15. C

Learning to forgive is one of the hardest but most rewarding skills in life. When someone hurts us, our natural reaction is to hold on to anger and pain. Yet research shows that forgiveness brings peace to our mind and body. ____16____ If you want to become a more forgiving person, here are some practical steps.
First, admit your hurt instead of hiding it. Pretending that nothing has happened will not make the pain disappear. ____17____ Only when you face the wound honestly can you begin to heal.
Second, try to see things from the other person’s point of view. This does not mean excusing what they did. ____18____ Perhaps they were afraid, careless, or simply did not know better.
Third, give up the idea of revenge. ____19____ The moment you stop wanting to punish the other person, you take back control of your own life.
Finally, focus on the present rather than the past. ____20____ Every day is a new chance to build a brighter future instead of repeating an old injury.
Forgiveness is not a sign of weakness; it is a gift you give yourself. It does not mean you forget what happened, but that you refuse to let it rule your heart. Step by step, you will find that forgiving others finally sets yourself free.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On a bitterly cold January morning in Alexandria, Minnesota, the temperatures had dropped dangerously below freezing point, and biting winds made conditions even worse. Overnight, a thick blanket of snow had quietly covered the town, streets were deserted, and a sharp silence hung in the air. People stayed indoors, enjoying hot drinks and keeping their fireplaces burning brightly, cautious of the bitter cold that threatened frostbite and hypothermia (失温).
The town was quiet as people remained indoors. However, Eleanor, an 83-year-old lady who lived alone, worried the birds would go hungry in this freezing weather. As she struggled through deep snow, her boots had suddenly slipped on hidden ice beneath, causing her to fall. Unable to rise with wet gloves and numb (麻木的) fingers, she had been stuck in the snow. Unfortunately, she could turn to nobody for help.
Originally, Eric Nelson had no intention of stepping outside that morning. He stood at his kitchen window, briefly observing the frozen landscape and rubbing (搓) his hands together to stay warm. However, as he thought about the possibility of frozen water pipes — an inconvenience that could make the already unbearable cold worse — he decided to step out quickly and inspect them.
As Eric opened his front door, an icy wind struck his face, nearly taking his breath away. To his surprise, he noticed his elderly neighbor Eleanor’s small dog, Maya, was already standing anxiously on his doorstep, shaking slightly but barking insistently. She moved her feet anxiously as her breath formed small white clouds in the cold air. Snow stuck to her fur, suggesting she had been outside for longer than was safe in such extreme temperatures.
Eric instantly sensed something was seriously wrong. Eleanor rarely went outside, especially in such extreme weather. Feeling increasingly uneasy, he quickly followed the anxious dog as she dashed urgently toward Eleanor’s backyard. When he arrived, his heart sank. Eleanor lay helplessly on the snow-covered ground near a bird feeder, pale-faced and shaking uncontrollably.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Without hesitation, Eric rushed to Eleanor.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Two days later, Eleanor knocked on Eric’s door after being released from the hospital.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Without hesitation, Eric rushed to Eleanor. His heart pounding wildly, he gently rolled her over, only to find her lips turning blue and her body shivering violently. With great care, he scooped her up in his arms, mindful of her fragile condition. Racing back to his house, he laid her on the couch, covering her with every blanket he could find. Immediately, he dialed 911, relaying Eleanor’s condition to the operator. As he waited, Eric heated water bottles, placing them around her body to warm her up. Eventually, the ambulance arrived, taking Eleanor to the hospital.
Two days later, Eleanor knocked on Eric’s door after being released from the hospital. Her eyes sparkled with gratitude. “Eric, I’m truly indebted to you,” she said, holding out a hand-knitted scarf. “This is a small token of my appreciation.” Eric beamed, declining the gift at first. But seeing the earnestness in her eyes, he accepted it. “You’re more than welcome, Eleanor. I’m just glad you’re okay.” From then on, their bond deepened, and they became closer than ever, setting an example of neighborly love in the community.

A. To suggest the flowers would soon be planted.
B. To explain why the bench needed winter storage.
C. To describe the bench’s practical use in winter.
D. To show the bench was not serving its purpose.
7. What does “The Bench” represent at the story’s end?
