A Guided Tour of Rome
Overview
Exploring the following tourist destinations -- the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill -- all by yourself can be difficult, especially on a short stay in Rome. This guided tour brings these three famous places together in one organized visit. A guide will explain what you are seeing as you go.
Why Travelers Choose This Tour
Many tour groups only visit the outside of the Colosseum. However, this tour takes you inside for an immersive (沉浸式的) experience.
What’s Included
◆ An experienced guide
◆ Earphones to hear your guide clearly
◆ The admission ticket for the Colosseum, valued at €18 a person, or €24 a person if you also get to visit the arena floor.
◆ The admission tickets for the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill
What’s Not Included

The Detailed Plan of the Journey
◆ Colosseum (1 hour 30 minutes)
Your journey begins with the Colosseum, one of the world’s most famous tourist destinations. Your guide will ask a history expert to tell you all about the battles played out in this arena.

The Roman Forum was the heart of ancient Rome. All of Roman life could be found in this busy marketplace. You will stay immersed in history the whole time, without wasting a moment waiting in line.
◆ Palatine Hill (1 hour)
The next stop takes you back to the very beginning. Palatine Hill is the place where Romulus chose to found the city that would become Rome in 753 BC -- a decision that led to a tragedy for his brother Remus. From here, you can enjoy great views of the Roman Forum.

When Jefferson Early Learning Center opened in Houston in 2022, school officials started receiving calls from angry residents (居民). It wasn’t because of the increase in traffic or the noise from loud children. It was the wild tall grass. “Residents wanted to know something: Why aren’t you cutting the lawn (草坪)? Why aren’t you keeping the grounds?” said Hilda Rodriguez, an official working for the Alief Independent School District, home to Jefferson.
Although Jefferson’s neighbors didn’t know it, the tall grass around the early learning center was part of a larger project to solve climate-related problems in an area where there is a heavy flood nearly every two years and the number of days at or above 35°C has increased greatly over the past 25 years.
Jefferson’s designers focused on the land around the center. They chose to bring back much of the ground’s local grasslands and wetlands, creating a habitat (栖息地) for more than 200 kinds of plants and animals. That kind of habitat is especially good for an area at risk of climate change events, such as the heavy rains that often hit the city. “By putting in grasses, we can now take in three to four times as much water as if we had freshly cut grass,” said Jefferson’s designer Melissa Turnbaugh.
Alief officials have already noticed the advantages of the unusual use of the school land. During the school year, students can walk on paths through the grassland and learn about plants and flowers. The local plants can deal with Houston’s really hot summers. This saves work, time, and money for Alief’s care and repair team, which seldom needs to cut or water the grass at Jefferson.
“We’re cooling the neighborhood,” said Turnbaugh. “I think we’re being good neighbors.” Over time, Jefferson’s neighbors have realized that. The calls have stopped. “Once they understood, it became very clear to them that this was meaningful,” said Rodriguez.
4. According to paragraph 1, what did the residents complain about?
A. Noise pollution. B. Traffic jams. C. Untidy grounds. D. Wildlife threats.
5. How can Jefferson’s grass be good for its students?
A. By letting them play outside. B. By making them good neighbors.
C. By helping them pay less for school. D. By allowing them to connect with nature.
6. What did Jefferson want to create with its grassy land?
A. A habitat for special wildlife. B. An environment-friendly space.
C. An educational center for everyone. D. An excellent model for other schools.
7. What is the best title for the passage?
A. A School’s Wild Grass: A Problem or a Solution
B. A Climate-Friendly School: How It Was Built
C. Jefferson Early Learning Center: A Story of Change
D. Houston’s Wetlands: Why the City Needs Them
C 5. D 6. B 7. A

根据第二段“Although Jefferson’s neighbors didn’t know it, the tall grass around the early learning center was part of a larger project to solve climate-related problems in an area where there is a heavy flood nearly every two years and the number of days at or above 35°C has increased greatly over the past 25 years.(尽管杰斐逊的邻居并不知晓,早教中心周边的高草是一个大型项目的一部分,该项目旨在解决该地区和气候相关的难题,这里几乎每两年就会遭遇一次大洪水,过去25年里气温达到或超过35摄氏度的天数大幅增加)” 以及第三段“They chose to bring back much of the ground’s local grasslands and wetlands, creating a habitat (栖息地) for more than 200 kinds of plants and animals. That kind of habitat is especially good for an area at risk of climate change events, such as the heavy rains that often hit the city.(他们选择恢复了大部分当地草地和湿地,为200多种动植物创造了栖息地。这种栖息地对于受气候变化影响的地区尤其有益,例如经常袭击该城市的强降雨事件。)”可知,杰斐逊想要用草地打造一个环保空间,应对气候问题。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“When Jefferson Early Learning Center opened in Houston in 2022, school officials started receiving calls from angry residents (居民). It wasn’t because of the increase in traffic or the noise from loud children. It was the wild tall grass. “Residents wanted to know something: Why aren’t you cutting the lawn (草坪)? C
We are now well into the digital age, and in recent years, many companies have developed modern retro (怀旧的) technology, including MP3 players. MP3 players were popular during the late 1990s and early 2000s, as people used them to play music.
Back then, the Internet was not yet as dependable as it is today and people had to have a cell phone for communication, an MP3 player to store and play music, a computer for work, and more. However, the smartphone changed all that as it became the all-in-one device that a person needs. Because of the smartphone, companies developed apps for different purposes, with music streaming forever changed by the Swedish company, Spotify, which introduced the app in 2008. Thanks to Spotify, users no longer need to copy their favorite songs into their MP3 players or iPods.
Even though music streaming apps are becoming more and more popular, there are companies in the industry that believe technology like MP3 players is necessary. One such company is Sony. The technology company is developing a new MP3 player model, known as the Digital Audio Player (DAP). Companies like FiiO are also developing their modern MP3 players. These MP3 players all have Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth, and more. They also have large storage capacities (存储容量) and allow users to add microSD cards if they need more space.
Because of these companies, retro fans can continue to enjoy the experiences MP3 players bring, which they share with the rest of the world. The community is growing, and many people share the same dissatisfaction with music streaming popularized by Spotify and the like. Some argue that music streaming is losing its way because of a large number of podcasts and audiobooks, while some simply want to go back to the “good old days” when they picked up their MP3 players, listened to music, and shut out the world.
8. What made MP3 players go out of fashion?
A. The rise of smartphones. B. The growth of the Internet.
C. The popularity of iPods. D. The drop in CD sales.
9. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A. Sony leads the way in producing MP3 players.
B. DAP enjoys great popularity all over the world.
C. Sony still produces MP3 players for elderly users.
D. Modern MP3 players come with advanced technology.
10. Why do some retro fans go after MP3 players?
A. They have a special love for old objects.
B. They like high sound quality.
C. They want a focused music experience.
D. They prefer a cheaper device.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. The influence of technology on music. B. The changes in music listening habits.
C. The comeback of MP3 players. D. The popularity of music streaming apps.
A 9. D 10. C 11. C
根据第二段“Back then, the Internet was not yet as dependable as it is today and people had to have a cell phone for communication, an MP3 player to store and play music, a computer for work, and more.
根据第三段中“These MP3 players all have Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth, and more. They also have large storage capacities (存储容量) and allow users to add microSD cards if they need more space. (这些MP3播放器都配有无线网络、蓝牙等功能。它们还有大容量存储空间,如果用户需要更多空间,还可以加装存储卡。)”可知,现代MP3播放器搭载先进技术。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Some argue that music streaming is losing its way because of a large number of podcasts and audiobooks, while some simply want to go back to the “good old days” when they picked up their MP3 players, listened to music, and shut out the world. (一部分人认为,大量播客和有声书的涌入,让音乐流媒体偏离了初衷;还有一部分人只是想回到那段“美好的旧时光”—— 拿起MP3播放器,聆听音乐,隔绝外界纷扰。)”可知,怀旧爱好者追求专注的音乐体验。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是根据最后一段“Because of these companies, retro fans can continue to enjoy the experiences MP3 players bring, which they share with the rest of the world. C选项“The comeback of MP3 players. (MP3播放器的回归)”能概括全文。
D
Researchers at the University of Exeter in England have crafted a device that employs artificial intelligence (AI) to detect (发现) Asian wasps (黄蜂). AI refers to the ability of computers to learn from experiences and carry out tasks swiftly that would typically require a large amount of time from humans.
Asian wasps are considered an invasive (入侵的) species, showing that they are not native to the UK and can threaten our ecosystem — the environment and its living organisms. These wasps feed on local insects and pose a significant threat to honey bees — a single wasp can kill up to 50 honey bees in a day.
The innovative (创新的) system, named VespAI, uses a wet sponge cloth with a liquid that draws wasps. Once the wasps are drawn in, an automatic camera takes pictures of them. The AI then analyzes the photos to determine whether the insect is an Asian wasp or a European wasp, which is a native species.
If an Asian wasp is spotted, a message is sent right away to the researcher’s phone or computer. VespAI acts as an early-warning system, making it possible to detect any Asian wasp that may have entered a new area of the UK. Its high precision (精确度) helps authorities respond quickly to follow the wasp, find their nests, and get rid of them before they can reproduce (繁殖).
There is growing concern among experts that Asian wasps may have made a lasting home in the UK rather than being only transient or accidental arrivals. Currently, the UK’s way of dealing with Asian wasps depends on people seeing them, recognizing them, and reporting them. However, many of these reports turn out to be other kinds of insects, which is not a very effective way to deal with the situation.
Dr. Thomas O’Shea-Wheller, who worked on VespAI, said this new system won’t mistake other insects for Asian wasps or miss them when they come around. VespAI has been tested on the island of Jersey and will be tried in other places this year.
12. What does paragraph 3 mainly focus on?
A. VespAI’s design and operation. B. The effectiveness of wasp traps.
C. VespAI’s influence on ecosystem. D. Traditional wasp detecting methods.
13. Why is VespAI described as an “early-warning system”?
A. It warns people of the danger of wasp stings.
B. It helps find Asian wasps before they spread widely.
C. It predicts when Asian wasps will reproduce.
D. It tells researchers where honey bees live.
14. What does the underlined word “transient” mean in paragraph 5?
A. First-class. B. Short-term. C. Dangerous. D. Regular.
15. Which statement would probably Dr. Thomas agree with?
A. VespAI will help manage wasp invasions.
B. VespAI requires continuous human control.
C. The current reporting system is highly effective.
D. The current methods fail to recognize Asian wasps.
A 13. B 14. B 15. A
根据第三段“The innovative (创新的) system, named VespAI, uses a wet sponge cloth with a liquid that draws wasps. Once the wasps are drawn in, an automatic camera takes pictures of them. The AI then analyzes the photos to determine whether the insect is an Asian wasp or a European wasp, which is a native species.(这套名为 VespAI 的创新系统使用一块浸有诱虫液体的湿海绵布来吸引黄蜂。一旦黄蜂被吸引过来,自动相机就会为它们拍照。随后人工智能分析照片,判断这只昆虫是亚洲黄蜂,还是本土物种欧洲黄蜂。)”可知,第三段主要介绍了VespAI的设计和操作。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“VespAI acts as an early-warning system, making it possible to detect any Asian wasp that may have entered a new area of the UK. Its high precision helps authorities respond quickly to follow the wasp, find their nests, and get rid of them before they can reproduce.( VespAI 充当一套预警系统,能够发现任何可能进入英国新区域的亚洲黄蜂。该系统精确度高,有助于相关部门迅速行动,追踪黄蜂、找到巢穴,并在它们繁殖之前将其清除。)”可知,该系统能在亚洲黄蜂刚进入新区域时就完成检测,帮助相关部门在其繁殖扩散前清除巢穴,避免大范围蔓延,符合“预警系统”的定位。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词前文“There is growing concern among experts that Asian wasps may have made a lasting home in the UK (专家们越来越担心亚洲黄蜂可能已经在英国建立了持久的家园)”和“rather than(而不是)”以及后文“or accidental arrivals(或意外抵达)”可知,亚洲黄蜂可能已经在英国建立了一个持久的家园,而不仅仅是短暂或意外的到来。
Thomas O’Shea-Wheller, who worked on VespAI, said this new system won’t mistake other insects for Asian wasps or miss them when they come around.(研究VespAI的Thomas O’Shea-Wheller博士称,这个新系统不会把其他昆虫误认为是亚洲黄蜂,也不会在它们来的时候错过它们。)”
Many high school seniors feel anxious about the college application essay They feel their lives are too ordinary to create a story that will impress admissions officers. ____16____ It only needs to show their personal growth in a true way, based on everyday moments.
I once worked with a boy who had no idea what to write about. Family? Favorite subject? He kept silent until I suggested, “Hobbies?” He shyly said, “I like boxing.” Then his essay unfolded, not about boxing itself, but about self-discipline and resilience (坚韧), qualities that any college would admire. So look into the things that shape you. ____17____
Some students try to catch attention by writing their essays in unconventional forms, such as a poem or a play. Most still follow the traditional storytelling model: a hook (引子), a story, and a lesson learned. ____18____ For example, the rough edges and the pleasant smell of her father’s handmade furniture inspired one girl to become an engineer. The magic is in the details and emotional depth.
As a writing tutor, I was hung up on language rules at first. Should I help my students stick to “standard English”, or let them write the way they naturally speak — even if that includes informal expressions? ____19____ It’s also about expressing ideas naturally and making connections with readers. It doesn’t hurt to tell a humorous childhood incident in a light, conversational tone.
____20____ Essay writing teaches students to express themselves with precision through rethinking ideas, refining language, and rewriting drafts. Through many rounds of rewriting, they will uncover deeper insights and create a story only they can tell.
A. But a powerful essay doesn’t require a dramatic story.
B. Whatever the form, an essay stands out for its story.
C. After all, I preferred a formal writing style.
D. Once a topic is found, the essay practically writes itself.
E. A great essay eventually takes form by making improvements.
F. That’s why they try to make up interesting stories.
G. I soon realized writing isn’t just about language.
A 17. D 18. B 19. G 20. E
They feel their lives are too ordinary to create a story that will impress admissions officers.(他们觉得自己的人生太过平凡,根本写不出能打动招生官的故事。)”和下文“It only needs to show their personal growth in a true way, based on everyday moments.(它只需要立足日常点滴,以真实的方式展现出个人的成长。)”
根据上文“He kept silent until I suggested, “Hobbies?” He shyly said, “I like boxing.” Then his essay unfolded, not about boxing itself, but about self-discipline and resilience (坚韧), qualities that any college would admire. So look into the things that shape you.(线索句:前句 “So look into the things that shape you.”(他一直沉默不语,直到我提示他“爱好呢?”,他才腼腆地说:“我喜欢拳击。”随后他的作文徐徐展开,内容没有围绕拳击本身,而是聚焦自律与坚韧——这是所有大学都会欣赏的品质。所以,去深入挖掘那些塑造了你本身的事物吧。)”可知,上文举了男孩以拳击为写作素材的例子,找到主题后文章顺利展开,作者建议挖掘塑造自身的经历。D项“一旦找到合适主题,文章几乎就能一气呵成。”句承接例子,点明找到主题之后写作就会变得容易。
【18题详解】
根据上文Some students try to catch attention by writing their essays in unconventional forms, such as a poem or a play. Most still follow the traditional storytelling model: a hook (引子), a story, and a lesson learned.( 有些学生尝试采用非传统文体(例如诗歌或者剧本)来写文书,以此吸引眼球。 和下文“For example, the rough edges and the pleasant smell of her father’s handmade furniture inspired one girl to become an engineer.(比如,一位女孩父亲手工家具粗糙的边角与宜人的木香,激励她立志成为一名工程师。)”
根据上文“Should I help my students stick to “standard English”, or let them write the way they naturally speak — even if that includes informal expressions?( 我应当要求学生坚持使用 “标准英语”,还是允许他们按照自己平时自然说话的方式来写作 —— 哪怕里面包含非正式的表达?)”和下文“It’s also about expressing ideas naturally and making connections with readers.(它同样在于自然地表达观点,并与读者建立情感共鸣。)” 后文有also,说明存在not just...also... 中“writing isn’t just about language”对应后文also引出的内容:写作还要自然表达想法、和读者产生共鸣。

Your journey begins with the Colosseum, one of the world’s most famous tourist destinations. Your guide will ask a history expert to tell you all about the battles played out in this arena.

A. A habitat for special wildlife. B. An environment-friendly space.
C. An educational center for everyone. D. An excellent model for other schools.

A. A School’s Wild Grass: A Problem or a Solution
B. A Climate-Friendly School: How It Was Built
C. Jefferson Early Learning Center: A Story of Change
