It was thirty years ago. In my family we were two children, one employed adult, and Christmas was coming. My parents were managing, but only just, and they had started preparing us for a simpler Christmas.
So they told me, their 5-year-old daughter, well in advance that Santa Claus had received so many letters that winter that he had run out of presents. Santa is generous, they explained, but Santa is not bottomless. Everybody knew, of course, that Santa did not actually manufacture (大量生产) the gifts. He bought them, like anyone else.
For a 5-year-old, this was a disaster. But children often have an unnerving ability to solve problems before the adults around them notice. I went to my room, found old toys, and wrapped them carefully. One for my mother, one for my father, one for each of my grandparents, and some for myself and my brother. By the morning, I had become, in my own mind, the hero of Christmas. There would be presents under the tree. There would be the best part of Christmas, the opening. I had solved the first money problem of my life and brought joy to my family.
The ending was happier than I expected. Santa, it turned out, had found gifts for the young family after all. The old toys were quietly returned to my bedroom.
And yet, that Christmas has stayed with me my whole life. It is a memory about adapting to something a child has a hard time understanding. It is also a memory about something common, the kind of relative shortage and insecurity that exists in many families. That memory, and the dozens that followed, quietly built a way of thinking I never noticed I had. I came to believe that whether we had plenty of money or just about enough, we would manage, and our problems would be temporary.
24. Why did the author’s parents mention Santa Claus in advance?
A. To encourage her to share presents.
B. To explain their financial difficulties.
C. To introduce how Santa Claus worked.
D. To lower her expectations for Christmas.
25. What does the underlined word “unnerving” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Limited. B. Incredible. C. Insufficient. D. Trained.
26. Which of the following best describes the author as a kid?
A. Curious and patient.
B. Honest and sensitive.
C. Creative and generous.
D. Reliable and determined.
27. What influence did that Christmas memory have on the author?
A. It helped her accept family insecurity.
B. It increased her love for Christmas gifts.
C. It taught her to avoid money-related troubles.
D. It helped her form a positive view of hard times.
C
A new survey conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics has discovered a significant gap between American teens’ perceptions(感知)of the support they receive and what their parents believe they provide. The study showed that only 26% of teens feel they get the social and emotional support they need all the time, while parents are almost three times as likely to think they do. A concerning 20% of teens said they rarely or never received the support they needed, and 3% of parents perceived the same issue. This difference tells that parents may be underestimating their children’s need for support.
Dr. Jeffrey Arnett, a developmental psychologist, stressed the importance of the parent-adolescent relationship, stating that parents play a central role in their children’s lives. Lisa Damour, a psychologist, pointed out a possible disconnect between the type of support parents think they offer and what teens actually need. She noted that while parents often provide advice or guidance, teens are more likely to seek empathy and reassurance.
The lack of perceived support was linked to poorer health outcomes. Teens who felt less supported reported higher rates of depression and anxiety. They also struggled with poor sleep and expressed lower satisfaction with life. The study further revealed that this issue affected specific groups more seriously: Black teens reported feeling less supported than their parents believed, and girls generally felt less supported than boys did.
The US Surgeon General has called attention to the importance of youth mental health. Help them feel connected and step out of their comfort zones—through sports, education, arts, civic engagement, interactive dialogue and more to build broader social connections. Create a safe space at home where teens feel “seen, heard and valued”. Supporting teenagers also involves simply being curious about their experiences and offering empathy, which can be therapeutic (有疗效的) for their mental health.
28. What is the main finding of the survey?
A. Parents and teens share similar views on family support.
B. Most teenagers refuse to discuss their feelings with adults.
C. Parental problems are the main cause of family arguments.
D. Parents believe they offer more support than teens actually feel.
29. What would Lisa Damour suggest parents do?
A. Turn to professional psychologists.
B. Stop making choices for their kids.
C. Put themselves in their kids’ shoes.
D. Give more practical tips and guidance.
30. What can we infer from paragraph 3?
A. Boys are unlikely to suffer from low spirits.
B. Children from wealthy families feel more supported.
C. Black teens receive less parental support than other teens.
D. Black teenage girls might need their parents’ support the most.
31. What does the last paragraph mainly focus on?
A. Importance of youth mental health.
B. Specific measures to support teenagers.
C. Hidden reasons for parents’ low support.
D. Harmful effects of teens’ lack of support.
D
“Digital technology has transformed human nature to the point where we are becoming ‘different kinds of creatures’,” said philosopher Antón Barba-Kay in a talk as part of the Department of Government’s Vik-Bailey Lecture Series.
Barba-Kay has written about the dehumanizing effects of technology in his book A Web of Our Own Making: The Nature of Digital Formation. Although he acknowledges(承认)the benefits brought by the digital revolution, he complains about its negative effects on human well-being so much that he would like to go back in time before the arrival of the Internet.
As digital technologies develop, humans are challenged to prove their humanity not only to themselves but also to the digital technologies developed by humans. Barba-Kay pointed to the use of CAPTCHA, (Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart), a test to determine whether the user is a human. For him, CAPTCHA calls on humans to perform acts of humanity online, but it actually shows how human nature is being threatened by advances in digital technology.
Barba-Kay worries that rapid developments in digital technology are affecting key aspects of the human experience: their sense of community, time, reality, and more broadly what it means to be human and what the purpose of life should be.
Michael Sandel, a professor of Government, raised a question to Barba-Kay at the end of the event. “I received a paper from a student that was pretty good,” said Sandel. “I called the student in and asked the student about it. The student denied that it was written by AI, and I wondered after we spoke, which should worry me more: whether he had cheated and lied about it, or whether he had come to write like AI. What do you think?”
With a response that summarized his views on the effects of digital technology on human nature, Barba-Kay said, “The latter.”
32. What does Barba-Kay intend to say by mentioning pre-Internet times?
A. He misses the good old days.
B. The Internet needs to be controlled.
C. The digital age has arrived too soon.
D. Technology harms human well-being.
33. What does the example of CAPTCHA indicate according to Barba-Kay?
A. Computers fail to separate humans from robot programs.
B. The development of digital technology puts human nature at risk.
C. Online tests can prevent attacks from robot programs.
D. Humans can no longer manage digital technology well.
34. Which is more of a concern, according to Barba-Kay’s response to Sandel?
A. Difficulty in detecting AI-written papers.
B. Students’ dishonesty in writing.
C. A lack of humanity in writing.
D. Students’ dependency on AI.
35. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Are You a Human? Select All That Apply
B. A New Form of Human is Taking Shape
C. The New Dark Age: Welcoming Digital Technology
D. CAPTCHA and Humanity: How Technology Helps Us

Recently, I asked my AI agent to “summarize the latest client (顾客) coaching conversation and help give follow-ups.” My AI agent gave me an answer that looked right at first glance, but was actually not proper. I handed it messy information and expected it to know which bread crumbs (面包屑) mattered.
Unlike every long-suffering colleague before it, AI will not cover for your bad habits at work. ___36___ This might help explain why employees at many workplaces are struggling with AI adoption.
AI agents have challenges, for sure, but they are getting better every day. ___37___ Helping employees get the most out of AI tools requires them to learn how to be better collaborators (合作者) and better managers. The same lessons that make us better at working with people can make us better at using AI.
My research institute has been studying how human habits shape the quality of AI-assisted work. We have asked the AI agents what it is like to work with humans. The agents identified eight types of human employees who are challenging to work with. ___38___
There is the “context hoarder,” who defines the assignment but holds back the information needed to complete it well—like asking for a recommended solution to a problem but failing to give a time frame for carrying it out.
___39___ He or she may ask the AI agent with a question like “Can you check the client issue?” and assume the agent knows which client and issue are referred to here.
Humans have always handed off vague (模糊的), half-formed thoughts and trusted colleagues to understand what was meant and fix it behind the scenes. But AI agents can’t do that. ___40___ To get better at working with AI requires us to get better at what the best managers have always done.
A. It reflects them back.
B. It fixes your problems.
C. AI can never replace humans.
D. The real sources of friction are humans.
E. These tools take instructions at face value.
F. There are two that stand out and show some of our worst workplace tendencies.
G. Then there is the “vague requester” who fails to properly define an assignment.

I used to be a smartphone holdout(抵制). “Who needs this pocket-sized distraction?” I’d laugh, watching others ___41___ to screens. Then life threw a curve ball: my grandma got sick, and suddenly, not having a phone to get updates felt like being stuck in a time warp. So, I gave in and ___42___ the smartphone crowd, and oh boy, it’s been a roller coaster.
These devices are magic and confusion. At family dinners, uncles who once told wild fishing tales now just nod and ___43___ messages. I’ve seen friends at concerts ___44___ the whole show like they’re making a documentary for aliens, ___45___ the real-life cheers of the crowd. Once, I even caught myself taking a photo of a sunset ___46___ just enjoying the sunset.
The downsides pile up. “Text neck” is a real ___47___ — my neck sometimes feels like it’s practicing for a robot role. And staring at that blue light before bed is like telling your brain, “Hey, let’s party all-night!” Kids these days? They’d rather emoji-chat than have a proper face-to-face, turning real-life gatherings into a game of ___48___ exchanges.
But hey, smartphones aren’t all ___49___. When I got lost in a foreign city, the navigation map was my knight in shining armor (盔甲). Need to learn a random skill? There’s an app for that. They keep us ___50___ across oceans, which is pretty neat when you want to show off your questionable haircut to your cousin in Timbuktu.
The ___51___ is balance. I now do “phone-free walks”— no Instagram, no texts, just birds and my own thoughts. At dinners, I ___52___ my phone like it’s forbidden. Smartphones are ___53___, not rivals. Let’s use them to connect, but not forget the joy of looking up and ___54___ the world—and the sweet smiles of the people right next to us. After all, the best moments in life are those we truly experience, not those we simply ___55___.

There are many things we can do to learn English. A recent survey has been conducted by the school English newspaper to explore how students learn English beyond the classroom.
As is shown in the bar chart, entertainment-based activities enjoy greater popularity compared with learning-related ones: listening to English songs ranks first at 65%, followed by watching English movies at 50%. In contrast, reading English books and visiting learning websites make up merely 18% and 12% respectively. One possible explanation is that songs and movies are relaxing and require little effort while reading and website learning call for self-discipline and continuous devotion.
Based on the above analysis, it is recommended that students devote more time to reading English books and browsing English learning websites. We may also explore other ways of learning English. With balanced and enjoyable learning methods, progress in English is bound to be made.
