At first, like most Brazilian students, I regarded English only as a school subject. But when I decided to study in the United States, I started taking it much more seriously by attending three after-school classes every week. A few months later, I noticed a clear improvement in my English. Still, achieving fluency felt like a faraway goal, which made me feel upset.
However, motivation (动机) was the key to overcoming this challenge. I knew that in the United States, everything—from making new friends to doing well in school to finding a good job in the future — depended on English. This understanding drove me to study harder.
While motivation got me started, good habits kept me going. Every week, I set some small and achievable tasks, such as learning 20 new words. Flashcards quickly became my favourite tool for review. I also made sure to set aside 15 to 20 minutes each day for spoken English practice. I gradually realized that learning a new language doesn’t end when class is over — it is a continuous process.
To improve faster, I immersed myself in English as much as possible. For example, I watched Friends, an American TV show, over and over. At first, I couldn’t understand everything, but over time, my listening skills and vocabulary improved a lot. I also used the app Duolingo. It offers different learning methods, such as playing word games and reading funny stories. These methods made learning fun and efficient (效率高的).
Looking back, I can confidently say that mastering a new language is challenging, but if you keep going, the rewards (回报) will be amazing.
29. What played a key role in helping the writer overcome the challenge?
A. Following a good study plan. B. Using effective learning methods.

A. Convenient to use. B. Interesting and helpful.
C. Perfect for learning English. D. Rich in learning materials.

A. Convenient to use. B. Interesting and helpful.
C. Perfect for learning English. D. Rich in learning materials.

【答案】例文
A Moment That Made Me Grow
My biggest change began with a volunteer environmental activity last year.
Seeing cleaners pick up park litter, I felt ashamed of my bad habit of throwing rubbish casually. I used to be lazy and self‑centered. After taking part in the cleanup, I learned small actions count. Now I sort waste, help classmates with their studies and remind my family to save resources. Growth means realizing mistakes and improving myself.
This change makes me more responsible, and I take pride in my progress.
