①Long ago, in ancient China, there was a story about the invention of silk. People believed that silk was first invented by Leizu, the wife of the Yellow Emperor. Leizu learned how to make cocoons into soft and strong cloth. This magical cloth became known as “silk”, and it was so valuable that it was called “China’s Gold”. Following kings’ orders, the Chinese kept the secret of making silk for centuries.
② ▲ But during the Han Dynasty, the brave officer Zhang Qian traveled west as far as Central Asia and brought silk there. As years passed by, silk became so important that the trade road from Europe to China got its name — the Silk Road.
③The Silk Road became a busy highway for traders who carried things across deserts and mountains. For example, traders sold silk and tea from China. In return, they received treasures such as spices, gold and silver from the West. At the very beginning, it was mainly about trade; then people began to share ideas, technologies. Chinese inventions like papermaking were spread to the West, while new ideas about math and science came to China.

Have you watched the movie Dear You? Do you know where its English name comes from? Actually, “Dear...” is how English letters often begin. This is connected to the “qiaopi” in the film. As the movie became popular, it brought public attention to qiaopi.
Qiaopi is a special kind of letter sent between overseas Chinese and their family. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, qiaopi became the special link between them, carrying both emotional messages and financial support. At that time, many Chinese went abroad to work or do business. They sent messages and money home in this way. Before the 1980s, about 30 million qiaopi letters had been received across the country. Between 1864 and 1980, overseas Chinese sent over $10.8 billion back home through qiaopi.
Jiang Mingdian, about 77, has written thousands of qiaopi letters for local men in his hometown for about sixty years. One story still stays with him. A woman from Jinjiang, Fujian Province, came to him every month to write a letter to her husband in the Philippines. She always looked forward to his reply; it was the only thing she lived for. But she did not know that her husband had died in an accident. It was her son who had been writing qiaopi back to her all the time.
However, qiaopi did even more. “Overseas Chinese donated billions of dollars through qiaopi to build local bridges, railways, and schools, helping hometowns develop well so that the local people were able to live a better life,” Jiang said.
In the modern world, social media and e-payment are convenient for people across the world to communicate. But qiaopi still has its attraction. Young people travel across China to find Jiang. They no longer come just for traditional qiaopi. Some ask him to write messages to their future selves; others share the pressure of modern life. For them, writing qiaopi has become a way to express their feelings. Times change, but the value of qiaopi stays the same—it still carries emotions.
23. What does the underlined word “financial” have something to do with?
A. money B. education C. medicine D. literature
24. What can we infer from the story of the Fujian woman?
A. She knew her husband’s death from the very beginning.
B. Her son kept the sad truth away from his mother.
C. Her husband died because he failed to receive qiaopi.
D. She stopped writing letters after losing her husband.
25. What is Paragraph 4 mainly talking about?
A. The special stories behind the old qiaopi letters.
B. The difficulty of building bridges and railways.
C. Qiaopi’s influence on the development of hometowns.
D. How overseas Chinese made money in foreign countries.

Over the past ten years, China has achieved excellent development, and its high-speed railway system stands out as a clear example. On December 26, 2025, the Xi’an-Yan’an high-speed railway was opened. This line has brought China’s high-speed railway mileage (里程) to over 50,000 kilometers. This means China’s operating high-speed railway mileage is about twice the total length of all other countries in the world.
Today, the high-speed railway network covers 97% of Chinese cities, completely changing people’s travel experience. To start with, traveling between cities within 500 kilometers takes only one to two hours, and a 1,000-kilometer journey takes about four hours. An average of 16 million passengers take high-speed trains every day. This is a far cry from the past, when buying train tickets during busy seasons was a headache and the average train speed was only 60 kilometers per hour.
Then, high-speed railways now connect big cities with medium-sized and small towns, driving tourism and local industries. For example, since the Hangzhou-Changsha high-speed railway opened in 2014, the number of tourists to Jiangxi has increased a lot.
