Dear Mia,
You are asleep now, and I am writing at the kitchen table. It is late, and the whole house is quiet. Tomorrow you will start your new school, and I find that I cannot sleep.
I want to tell you something about the day you were born. It was raining hard. Your father ran to the hospital without an umbrella. When the nurse put you in my arms, you opened your eyes and looked at me. I was so afraid. I did not know how to be a mother.
You will meet many people at your new school. Some of them will be kind, and some will not. You may find the lessons hard. You may come home and cry, as I did when I was twelve. That is all right. Everyone has days like that.
I hope you will read this letter when you are older. By then you may have forgotten this night, and I may have forgotten how afraid I was. But I want you to know one thing: on the day you were born, I made a promise. I said that I would always be on your side, even when I do not agree with you.
Now go and have your breakfast. Put on your new shoes. Walk into that school with your head up.
Love,
Mum

The Quietest Room in the World
In a building near a lake in the United States, there is a small room. It looks like nothing special. But if you stand in it for a few minutes, you may hear a strange sound: your own heart beating. This room is often called the quietest place in the world.
How can a room be so quiet? The walls are covered with long wedges (楔子) of soft material. Each wedge points into the room and takes in sound, so the sound cannot bounce back. The floor and the ceiling are built in the same way. The room is also kept away from outside noise, so a plane flying above cannot be heard inside.
The room is so quiet that the background noise is about −9.4 decibels. Most people cannot stay in it for more than half an hour. When the ears hear almost nothing from outside, they begin to listen to sounds inside the body: the blood moving, the heart beating, even the stomach working. Some people feel sick. Others say they hear a low humming (嗡嗡声).
Why do scientists need such a room? Many machines make very small sounds, and engineers need a quiet place to test them. Phone makers, for example, use rooms like this to check how well a phone's microphone works. Doctors also use them to test hearing.
So the next time you think your classroom is too noisy, remember this little room by the lake. Silence, it turns out, can be very loud.
39. What may you hear first in the quietest room?
A. A plane above. B. The lake outside.
C. Your own heart beating. D. A phone ringing.
40. What does the underlined part mean?
A. The room is not open to people. B. The walls are soft and warm.
C. People cannot hear anything outside. D. Sound goes into the wedges and does not come back.
41. Who uses such a room in their work?
A. Engineers and doctors. B. Only phone makers.
C. Only doctors. D. Students and teachers.

Why Small Notes Work
In Grade Seven, you will have many new things to remember: English words, maths rules, the names of the planets. Some students try to remember everything by reading their books again and again. But there is a better way, and it is very simple. Write small notes.
A small note is not a copy of the book. It is only a few words, written in your own way. For example, when you learn the word “brave”, you do not write “brave: 勇敢的”. You write “brave — the firefighter in the story”. Now the word has a picture in your mind, and a picture is much easier to keep than a word on a list.
Small notes also help you find what you do not know. When you look at your note and cannot remember what it means, you know exactly which part to read again. Without notes, you may read the whole page and still not know where the problem is.
Another good thing about notes is that they are yours. Two students may write about the same lesson in two different ways. Yours can have a small drawing, a question mark, or even a word in Chinese. Nobody else needs to understand it.
Of course, notes only work if you look at them again. Put them where you will see them: on the wall, in your pencil case, or on the last page of your notebook. Read them for two minutes before you go to bed. Small notes, read often, are better than long notes read once.
42. What does the writer think of reading a book again and again?
A. It is the best way to remember things. B. It is a waste of time.
C. It is not the best way. D. It is only useful for English words.
43. What should a small note be like?
A. A copy of the book. B. A few words in your own way.
C. A long list of words. D. A page of Chinese translation.
44. Why is “brave — the firefighter in the story” a good note?
A. Because it gives the word a picture in your mind. B. Because it is in English.
C. Because it is short. D. Because the teacher wrote it.
45. According to the writer, what makes notes work?
A. Writing them very carefully. B. Keeping them in a notebook.
C. Looking at them again and again. D. Showing them to other students.

In a small town in Yunnan, there is a shop with no shopkeeper. The door is open all day, and there is a box on the table. People who want to buy something put the money in the box and take what they need.
The shop belongs to an old man called Grandpa Yang. He is seventy-eight and walks slowly. His son works in a city far away and comes home only once a year. “I cannot stand behind the table all day,” Grandpa Yang says. “So I let people help themselves.”
In the shop there are eggs, noodles, salt, soap and a few vegetables. Everything has a small price tag. If someone has no change, they can write it down in a notebook and pay the next time. In three years, only twelve people have not paid.
Why does the shop still work? Grandpa Yang thinks it is because everyone knows everyone. “If I take something and don't pay, my neighbours will know,” a young man says. “And I will feel bad for a long time.”
Grandpa Yang says he will keep the shop open as long as he can. “Money is not the only thing,” he says. “When people come in and say hello, I know they trust me. That makes me happy every day.”
