Here are some wonderful festivals around the world that happen in spring. If you want to know more about them, please click here or visit http://www.buddhanet.net/festival.htm
Songkran — Thailand
Dates: 13th — 15th, April
In Thailand, people celebrate a festival called Songkran, when people head out to the streets with water guns to spray (喷洒) everyone who walks past. It’s a very important traditional celebration in the country.
Naghol — Vanuatu
Dates: Every Saturday from April to May
Every year, villagers come together to celebrate the harvest of yams (甘薯), an important part in the people’s diet in Vanuatu. The festival is most famous for its “land diving (潜水) ceremony”. During the ceremony men and boys dive to the ground from high wooden towers with only two thin vines (藤) tied to their feet.
Cherry Blossom Viewing — Japan
Dates: The cherry blossom season is different from year to year depending on the weather.
The festival is well-known. The Japanese celebrate the days when the flowers finally blossom. Only a few days later, the petals (花瓣) fall to the ground, like pink snowflakes. That means the traditional festival only lasts for several days. In Japan, almost everyone has picnics in the parks to view the flowers.
Sinhalese New Year — Sri Lanka
Dates: 13th or 14th, April
Just like in many other countries in South East Asia, this is the time when people celebrate the traditional New Year, an ancient celebration which marks the end of the harvest season and is one of two times of the year when the sun is straight above Sri Lanka. There are a lot of delicious foods during the celebration.
1.What might happen to a tourist during SongKran?
A.He will get wet. B.He will hurt his feet.
C.He will be treated to delicious foods. D.He will see some petal falling.
2.Which festival is celebrated at a different time each year?
A.Songkran B.Naghol
C.Cherry Blossom Viewing D.Sinhalese New Year
3.Where is the text probably taken from?
A.On TV. B.In a report. C.On the Internet. D.In the newspaper.
【答案】1.A 2.C 3.C

Volleyball became my sport for two reasons. Primarily, my parents wanted me to try a sport that could make me enjoy exercise. I also knew that my mom loved playing it during her youth. I thought maybe I could feel the same. Actually, I fell in love with it after just a few practices.
Between practices, I would stretch (伸出) my arms out, hold my hands together and push my wrists down to try to build muscle memory (肌肉记忆). I would catch the ball and focus on forming a triangular (三角形的) shape each time. When I’d send the ball upwards, I knew I was one step closer to doing it well. I worked very hard because I wanted to get better. I wanted to be great one day.
However, I didn’t have the early start most girls had. I started many years later than many other girls. I was put into a difficult situation when the club where I practiced placed me on their strongest team for my age group (年龄段) in the middle of the season (赛季). Most of the girls did not welcome me. While this competition inside and between teams was sometimes helpful, it proved to be unhealthy. It was dangerous when it reached a tipping point (临界点). By the end of my freshman year of high school, I’d reached my breaking point.
Over four years, I only touched a volleyball a few times and only in informal settings. When the chance came to play with one of my best friends in some friendly matches, I hesitated. I finally agreed, making it a point not to be so hard on myself. Volleyball finally brought the same enjoyment that had made me fall in love with it. I look forward to every chance I have to play now. I expect there will be more volleyball matches.
4.Why did the author choose to play volleyball?
A.To find joy in exercise. B.To copy her mother’s experience.
C.To be a great player. D.To prove herself to others.
5.How is paragraph 2 developed?
A.By telling a story about her teammates. B.By explaining her training purpose.
C.By comparing different training methods. D.By listing clear actions and details.
6.What can be drawn from the author’s team experience?
A.It improved her skills quickly. B.It taught her to get on with teammates.
C.It kept her away from volleyball. D.It proved that hard work pays off.
7.What does the text show?
A.Early practice leads to better results. B.Joy returns when you ease up on yourself.
C.A strict coach makes a great player. D.Pressure sometimes breaks a person.
【答案】4.A 5.D 6.C 7.B
根据第一段“Primarily, my parents wanted me to try a sport that could make me enjoy exercise.(最主要的是,我的父母想让我尝试一项能够让我享受运动的项目。)”
根据第二段“Between practices, I would stretch (伸出) my arms out, hold my hands together and push my wrists down to try to build muscle memory (肌肉记忆). I would catch the ball and focus on forming a triangular (三角形的) shape each time.(训练之余,我会伸出双臂、双手合拢并且下压手腕,以此建立肌肉记忆。我会接球,并且每一次都专注做出三角形的姿势。)”可知,第二段是通过列举清晰的行动和细节展开叙述的。
6.推理判断题。根据第三段“By the end of my freshman year of high school, I’d reached my breaking point.(到高一结束的时候,我已经到了崩溃的临界点。)”以及第四段“Over four years, I only touched a volleyball a few times and only in informal settings.(在之后的四年里,我仅仅碰过几次排球,而且只在非正式的场合。)”
根据第四段“I finally agreed, making it a point not to be so hard on myself. Volleyball finally brought the same enjoyment that had made me fall in love with it.(我最终答应了,下决心不再对自己如此苛刻。排球终于又带给了我当初爱上它时的那份快乐。)”可知,当放松对自己的严苛要求之后,快乐又回来了。

Heat waves are becoming more common. Besides direct health risks, high heat also brings indirect influences. Many studies show that high temperatures do harm to our brain’s ability to think, and this will cause us to make poor choices.
A research team carried out a study on college students during a heat wave. The researchers wanted to learn how high temperatures would influence people’s thinking. For twelve days in July, students took two tests every day. One test was about simple number-calculating (计算) work. The other tested their ability to control their feelings and focus attention.
Some students lived in buildings with air-conditioning (AC), while others did not. The AC group stayed in cool rooms, while the non-AC group lived in much hotter places. The result was clear: students without AC got fewer correct answers and acted more slowly in the experiments.
Such studies have disadvantages, for example, not many people took part in the experiments. However, more experiments support the idea. When people are placed in hot environments, their memory, attention and problem-solving skills become worse. So high heat may truly impair our thinking ability.
The effect of heat on our thinking comes mainly from our body’s physical state. The old saying ‘in the heat of the moment” usually means bad choices caused by strong feelings. Now we find it is also true in a real-life sense. As heat waves appear more often, we should be careful when we make important decisions.
We’d better avoid important choices on hot days. Take time to think twice, and ask for others’ advice before making up our mind. If we have to make them, cool ourselves down first.
8.What is the main finding of the study on college students?
A.AC improves school points. B.Heat hurts mental performance.
C.Tests improve self-control. D.Heat harms physical condition.
9.What does the underlined word “impair” in paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A.Improve. B.Weaken. C.Show. D.Require.
10.Why does the writer mention the old saying in paragraph 5?
A.To show heat may cause unwise decisions.
B.To explain the meaning of strong feelings.
C.To introduce a real-life experience.
D.To offer tips for hot-day activities.
11.What will the author most probably talk about next?
A.Heat influences on health. B.Different views on the study.
C.More ways to keep cool. D.Choices to improve memory.
【答案】8.B 9.B 10.A 11.C
根据文章第三段“The result was clear: students without AC got fewer correct answers and acted more slowly in the experiments.(结果很明确:没有空调的学生在实验中答对的题目更少,反应也更慢。)”
根据文章第四段“However, more experiments support the idea. When people are placed in hot environments, their memory, attention and problem-solving skills become worse.(然而,更多实验支持这一观点。当人们处于炎热环境中时,他们的记忆力、注意力和解决问题的能力会变差。)”可知,炎热环境会使人们的记忆力、注意力和解决问题的能力会变差,由此可以推测高的温度确实可能损害我们的思维能力,划线词与B选项“Weaken.(削弱)”为同义词。
10.推理判断题。根据文章第五段 “The old saying ‘in the heat of the moment’ usually means bad choices caused by strong feelings. Now we find it is also true in a real-life sense.(俗话说“冲动之下”通常指的是因强烈情绪而做出的糟糕选择。现在我们发现这在现实生活中也是成立的。)” 可知,作者引用这句俗语是为了类比说明高温不仅引起情绪上的冲动,在生理上也会真实地导致人们做出不明智的决定。
11.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“If we have to make them, cool ourselves down first.(如果我们必须做决定,首先要让自己冷静/降温下来。)”

When Brandon Contino and co-founder Dan Chi were developing Four Growers’ produce-harvesting robots, they practically lived in a greenhouse for an entire year. “We actually started just running everything off a laptop, and I would be there in the row coding, and Chi would be making changes mechanically,” Contino, now CEO, told TechCrunch.
The result was Four Growers, which builds robots designed to autonomously harvest plants in greenhouses. The robots are programmed to identify produce at the right level of ripeness — which varies depending on a farmer’s needs — by using multiple stereo cameras to see the crops and help operate the robot’s arms to avoid nonripe fruit on the vine. The tech currently works with tomatoes and will be commercially available to harvest other crops like cucumbers in the near future.
Having enough labor to harvest crops is crucial because if crops can’t be harvested when they are ready, they rot and result in lost profits for the farm. The National Association of State Departments of Agriculture’s 2024 labor report said the industry is facing a “critical shortage” of workers, and it won’t get better anytime soon.
Contino said they were intentional about focusing on greenhouse farms. Unlike outdoor farms, greenhouses can grow almost all year round, and are more efficient than outside farms. They also harvest on a much more frequent schedule than outdoor farms, which makes them a good candidate to buy tech.
Four Growers now works with five customers, and its robots have picked millions of tomatoes. Contino said that the company is working to expand its technology beyond just harvesting and is looking to expand into outdoor farms in the coming years. “It’s not really a labor replacement. It’s more of an augmentation (增强),” Contino said. “As the labor force shrinks, and there are fewer people willing to do it, it’s putting them to more comfortable positions and allowing one person to be able to do a lot more.”
12.What are the cameras used to do in the greenhouse?
A.Identify crops’ maturity. B.Take pictures for the ripe fruit.
C.Monitor the surroundings. D.Distinguish tomatoes from other plants.
13.Why does the author mention the 2024 labor report in paragraph 3?
A.To express concern about the farm profits.
B.To stress the necessity of harvesting robots.
C.To show the achievements of Four Growers.
D.To call for public support for the farm industry.
14.According to Contino, what makes greenhouse farms a better target for Four Growers?
A.A wider range of crops. B.Greener than outside farms.
C.A greater number of consumers. D.Higher harvesting frequency.
15.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Autonomous Tech is Coming to Farming
B.Seed for a Farm’s Future-Farm Management.
C.Four Growers Robots Help Greenhouse Harvest.
D.Labor Shortages and Farmer Adaptation
【答案】12.A 13.B 14.D 15.C
根据第二段“The robots are programmed to identify produce at the right level of ripeness — which varies depending on a farmer’s needs — by using multiple stereo cameras to see the crops and help operate the robot’s arms to avoid nonripe fruit on the vine.(这些机器人经过编程,通过多个立体摄像头观察作物,判断农产品的成熟度,成熟标准根据农户需求有所不同,帮助操控机械臂避开藤蔓上未成熟的果实。)”
根据第三段“The National Association of State Departments of Agriculture’s 2024 labor report said the industry is facing a “critical shortage” of workers, and it won’t get better anytime soon.(美国全国州农业部门协会2024年劳动力报告称,该行业正面临“严重的”劳动力短缺问题,且短期内不会好转。)”
根据第四段“They also harvest on a much more frequent schedule than outdoor farms, which makes them a good candidate to buy tech.(温室农场的采摘频次远高于露天农场,这让它们成为这项技术的理想采购方。)”
通读全文特别是根据第二段“The result was Four Growers, which builds robots designed to autonomously harvest plants in greenhouses.(最终Four Growers公司诞生,该公司制造用于温室自主采摘作物的机器人。)”

When we learn a language, the goal is often to be able to have conversations with other people. But here’s a question that a lot of people ask online: Does reading help us with our speaking skill?
Speaking, like writing, is an active skill, because you’re producing something when you speak and write. 16 That’s because you’re receiving the information and trying to understand it. It’s obvious that written language is quite different from spoken language. For this reason, some learners believe reading won’t have much of an effect on their speaking skills. 17
But many other learners see reading as an important part of their language journey. A study of English learners in Bangladesh found 80% thought that reading had improved their speaking skills. 18 And experts say this is one of the most important things. Reading can add words to our vocabulary, and show us how words and grammar are used in context.
19 Teachers often divide reading into two types: extensive reading and intensive reading (精读). The goal of extensive reading is enjoyment, so it doesn’t matter if you don’t understand every word. When engaging in extensive reading, students usually choose the stories or books they want to read. 20 They choose stories or texts (文章) that may be used for achieving particular language-learning goals. Research has shown that both types of reading can be really useful in helping students speak better by improving their fluency, vocabulary and understanding.
A.They say that reading isn’t very useful.
B.Intensive reading may be led by teachers.
C.Reading and listening are totally different.
D.Reading can help improve your speaking skills.
E.Teachers are of great importance in English learning.
F.There are different kinds of reading, each offering different benefits.
G.And 75% said it had improved their imagination or enlarged their vocabulary.

By noon, the freshly-picked plants are rushed into cold storage for initial processing. That same afternoon, the plants 37 (fly) to Shanghai, which is 2,500 kilometers away. By the next morning, still 38 (carry) the lake’s moisture (水分), they appear neatly on the “digital shelves” of the fresh-grocery e-commerce platform Dingdong Maicai, get picked by customers, 39 eventually end up in their kitchens.
Behind this 24-hour race against time to deliver fresh produce to customers’ tables 40 (lie) long-term preparation. Jiang Lichuan, head of spring produce at Dingdong Maicai, and his team have worked tirelessly to make the 41 (seeming) impossible practical.
Once considered a local specialty, the Ottelia acuminata has become a national hit, meaning people in multiple big cities across China have access 42 it, mainly through online sales. Advances in agricultural technology, coupled with wider sourcing by e-commerce platforms, are enabling once region-bound seasonal ingredients 43 (reach) customers across the country.
“When I first arrived in Beijing, the selection of spring vegetables in local markets was extremely limited,” recalled Xu Jie, 45, a native of Changzhou, Jiangsu Province. “ 44 , in recent years, as soon as spring arrives, I can purchase a full range of hometown produce, 45 is a gift that fresh-grocery e-commerce platforms bring us,” she added.

主语the plants和fly(空运)之间是被动关系;全文为客观介绍,使用一般现在时,be用are,fly的过去分词为flown。
appear…, get picked…, end up…
固定搭配have access to...
固定结构enable sth. to do sth.

Nowadays, an increasing number of students are taking online courses on weekends for self-improvement.
However, every coin has two sides. While these courses allow us to learn flexibly and acquire knowledge beyond school, they may also lead to tiredness and reduced face-to-face interaction. Moreover, without proper selection, they might become a source of stress rather than help.
In my opinion, it’s important to choose courses that truly match our interests and needs. Balance is key — online learning should not come at the cost of our health or real-world connections.

C
