With the Internet becoming popular, more and more people prefer going shopping online. In fact, there are both advantages and disadvantages in online shopping.
Generally speaking,it is widely believed that there are several advantages as follows. We can buy things on the Internet without leaving our houses. Shopping online can save a lot of time for us. What's more, there are many different kinds of goods for us to choose from, which may be cheaper than those in real shops.
However, shopping online also causes us some problems. Since we can see only pictures of goods on the Internet,we are not sure about their quality. Besides, there are lots of advertisements on the Internet, making customers easily cheated.
In my opinion,we should be careful while enjoying the convenience of shopping online.

As the twins looked around them in disappointment, their father appeared. Spotting the mess, Dad frowned. Before he could question the kids, Jenna threw herself at him, tears pudding in her eyes, “Dad, we failed to prepare the gift for Mom!” Half surprised, half concerned, a sense of responsibility of caring about the kids drove the father to wipe away her tears, “Let’s do it together.” All of a sudden, the twins’ faces lit up with their head nodding firmly. The next moment witnessed their efforts to make the breakfast and they eventually made it. “Take these to Mom’s room.” Dad directed. Expectantly, the pair stepped out of the kitchen. (99词)
The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. The moment Mom opened her eyes, the twins yelled, “Happy Mother’s Day!” In the meanwhile, a plate of French toast placed on the table beside the bed caught Mom’s attention. “Mom, have a try.” Jeff suggested. Mom tried to conceal her emotion, but the glittering tears failed her. Gathering them into her arms, she choked, “Thank you, my darling!” Just at that moment, the father came in with two bowls of porridge, “Now we can share the breakfast together!” The twins were overjoyed, delight spreading through the house. (88词)
【官方范文】 As the twins looked around them in disappointment, their father appeared. One look and he knew what they were up to. Seeing their crestfallen faces, he told them to clean up the kitchen while he helped them make breakfast for Mother. The twins cheered up and did as told. Within an hour, the kitchen was cleaned, and Father had made some egg sandwiches and cooked some oat porridge. Then he sneaked back to bed. Meanwhile, the twins prepared the breakfast tray, added a card they had made and walked out of the kitchen. (82 words)
The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. They hugged her and yelled ‘Happy Mother’s Day, darling Mummy!’ Mother hugged the twins. Her eyes widened at the sight of the breakfast tray. She shook Father who was pretending to snore. He feigned astonishment when he saw the breakfast. Mother bit into a sandwich and said it was the best she had ever tasted. Jeff immediately wanted to have a bite. Jenna caught her father’s eye and they winked at each other secretly.

When snow fell over Longnan, a county in Jiangxi Province, in January 2024, Zhong Yanpeng’s phone buzzed with worry. He was in neighboring Guangdong, yet his mind was back home — on the 350-year-old Hakka round house he had tended for over 50 years.
“Rain and snow are the worst enemies of these old walls,” he told his team, and packed his tools quickly.
He drove through the storm across the provincial border to Yangcun Village. The four-story building stood silent beneath the grey sky, its rammed-earth walls damp-darkened. Zhong stepped closer, tapped gently with his small hammer, and listened. “Still solid,” he nodded in relief.
To most visitors, these round houses are mere curiosities. For Zhong, they represent memory, duty, and identity. Raised in one, he took up carpentry at 16 and stuck to the craft. Their strength comes not only from clay and lime, but also from brown sugar, egg whites, and sticky rice — ingredients aged for months for use in defensive walls. “Ancient wisdom,” he said with a smile.
Yet such wisdom is fragile. Skilled craftsmen were scarce in the 1980s, and the shortage persists today. His nephew Li Minghua, also a master, sighs about youth: “They favor city apartments. My team’s youngest member is over 40.”
Zhong travels nationwide to learn from masters, consulting historians and former residents, and recording every detail. “Each house bears a unique story. Restoration must stay true to original materials, measurements, and methods,” he says.
By 2023, Longnan had restored nearly 100 round houses, but Zhong sees no victory here. “My biggest concern is skill inheritance. As the senior craftsman, I must set an example.” His team now totals more than 50 members. Still, the real question lingers: will young people choose working with traditional rammed-earth construction over urban comfort? The answer remains uncertain.
24. Why does Zhong tap the old wall with his hammer?
A. To record building data. B. To repair broken walls.
C. To take measurements. D. To check its condition.
25. What makes Hakka round house walls tough?
A. Local modern building clay.
B. Modern protective chemicals.
C. Common kitchen ingredients.
D.Specially mixed and aged materials.
26. What is Zhong’s attitude toward restoration work?
A. Casual and careless. B. Proud and worried.
C. Cautious and faithful. D. Doubtful and negative.
27. What is victory in Zhong’s eyes?
A. Building a larger team. B. Passing down the skills.
C. Restoring more round houses. D. Attracting young tourists.

Last month, a study was published that examined climate change’s direct effects on the Earth’s seasons. Scientists found a connection between climate change and the temperature and duration of the summer season. Summers in the Northern hemisphere(北半球) could last nearly six months by the year 2100 if global warming continues, according to the study. With the seasons off-balance, there will be harmful effects on human health and agriculture.
Yuping Guan, a physical oceanographer at the State Key Laboratory of Tropical Oceanography at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and his colleagues combined daily climate data from 1952 to 2011 to get a sense of the start and end of each season in the Northern hemisphere. Over the nearly 60-year period, they discovered that, on average, summers grew from 78 to 95 days, while winters shortened from 76 to 73 days. The spring and autumn seasons also shortened. Guan and his team used the findings from the data to create a model to hypothesize (假设) about how the seasons would possibly change in the future. They found that if left untouched, summers in the Northern hemisphere could last nearly six months, while winters could contract to less than two months.
If the Earth’s seasons continue to shift, it will bring negative effects to human health and agriculture. Longer and hotter summers, for example, can cause mosquitoes and other disease-carrying insects to potentially expand their scope and land in places where they’re usually not found. “Because seasons influence the life cycles of plants and animals, climate change could disturb species’ ability to adapt,” said Scott Sheridan, a climate scientist. “If seasons continue to change, everything isn’t going to change perfectly as they should. If we take the example of flowers coming out of the ground, those flowers could come out, but bees aren’t there to pollinate them yet or they’re already past their peak.” With negative effects like these, human health and agriculture will face hardship while moving forward.
This study further demonstrates how cruel climate change is to humans, plants and animals, reminding us how much we are all connected with the environment we share.
28.What did scientists find according to the study?
A.Some seasons will disappear in their tracks.
B.Global warming will be at its worst in 2100.
C.Climate change affects the days of summers.
D.Human health remains unharmed by climate change.
29.What does the underlined word "contract" in the second paragraph mean?
A.Add. B.Extend. C.Keep. D.Shorten.
30.What can we infer about the effects of longer and hotter summers?
A.Mosquitoes can survive in more places.
B.The environment will change as we wish.
C.Human health and agriculture are hardly affected.
D.Some species are more able to adapt to the change.

Flavor isn’t just on your tongue — it’s also in your brain. New brain scans have identified a specific region that combines taste and smell into the unified experience we call flavor.
Smell and taste are closely connected, says Putu Agus Khorisantono, a neuroscientist at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. When we eat, food chemicals bind to taste sensors on the tongue, while food smells travel through the mouth and stick to smell sensors in the nose. These two signals combine in the brain to create our sense of flavor. For instance, mangoes and peaches both taste mostly sour, but their different aromas allow us to tell them apart easily.
To find exactly where this combination happens in the brain, Khorisantono’s team first trained 25 people to connect specific smell-taste mixtures with particular flavors. Then they gave the participants tiny drinks designed to activate either taste sensors or smell sensors, while scanning their brain activity throughout the process.
Using machine learning, the team analyzed the brain scans. They labeled each scan with what the participant had sipped, then trained algorithms to predict what people had tasted based on brain images alone. The best-performing algorithm had been trained on images from a region called the insula (脑岛).
Scientists once believed the insula responded only to tastes. But research with rodents in 2017 showed it could also process smells. And last year, scientists discovered that some insula cells respond to combinations of smell and taste, hinting that this region may play a role in identifying flavor.
The new study confirms this: the insula is key to both smell and flavor. When participants received either a food smell or a taste, scans of the insula looked strikingly similar, suggesting it interprets smell and taste signals in much the same way.
Algorithms trained on other brain regions also performed well, possibly because they receive flavor signals from the insula, Khorisantono explains. These findings offer new insight into how our brains create the rich experience of flavor from separate inputs.
32. What were the participants asked to do in the experiment?
A. Taste mangoes and peaches.
B. Describe the feelings brought by drinks.
C. Distinguish sour foods by smell.
D. Associate smell-taste mixtures with flavors.
33. Why was machine learning used in the study?
A. To optimize brain scan images.
B. To identify the brain region for flavor.
C. To confirm what people had tasted.
D. To mark brain scans with sipped drinks.
34. What did scientists once think about the insula?
A. It was only responsive to tastes.
B. It was only sensitive to smells.
C. It could combine smell and taste.
D. It played no role in identifying flavor.
35. What is the main finding of the new study?
A. Flavor experience largely depends on the tongue.
B. Flavor processing takes place within a single brain area.
C. Flavor arises from how the brain combines smell and taste.
D. Smell and taste keep separate from each other in the brain.

A MOTHER'S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother's Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture.
Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely. Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff's hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.
