Shirley Raines makes the homeless community in Los Angeles’s skid row (贫民窟) neighborhood feel human. She is the founder of Beauty 2 The Streetz, a nonprofit organization that provides free food, clothing, haircuts, and make-up services for the homeless. And Shirley is now the CNN Hero of the Year!
In 1990, Raines’ 2-year-old son Demetrius passed away from accidental poisoning while at his grandma's house. This event caused a lot of pain for Shirley Raines. The pain lasted for many years. And she did not know what to do about it. She struggled to understand what her purpose was in life. Until one day six years ago, Shirley visited the skid row with a friend from church who asked her to volunteer. She met a lot of homeless people and realized how much help they needed, not just in finding a home, but in finding themselves and their own worth and beauty.
Shirley started to volunteer every Saturday. As she got to know the homeless, they often praised her for her make-up, hair, and style. She started to offer to “make up” the homeless. They loved it, she loved it, they loved her and she loved them. She found purpose. So she started an outdoor beauty salon to serve the homeless, which took most of her spare time.
Raines started sharing her efforts on Instagram with photos and even livestreaming (网络直播) some of her events. Things took off. She formed her nonprofit organization, Beauty 2 The Streetz, and her followers quickly began donating money or time to expand Shirley’s impact. Her Instagram followers grew to over 200,000 people, including many beauty professionals such as licensed hairstylists, barbers, make-up artists. Many of them regularly donate money to keep the services rolling. Others donate their time to help Shirley serve the homeless.
Shirley’s boldness, caring, courage, consistency (连贯性), and desire to take action have led to making a real impact on people’s lives. And she also serves as a role model for and an inspiration to others.
24. How did Shirley change her sad feeling and live purposefully?
A. By livestreaming her daily life. B. By giving a hand to the homeless.
C. By taking good care of her family members. D. By interacting with her fans in her free time.
25. What is the most likely to make Shirley the CNN Hero of the Year?
A. Her strong character. B. Her make-up services.
C. Her creative idea. D. Her charitable acts.
26. Why are some beauty professionals mentioned in the fourth paragraph?
A. To show their contributions to the organization. B. To introduce the regulation of Shirley's program.
C. To explain the structure of the organization. D. To demonstrate the diversity of volunteers.
27. Which does the author probably suggest readers do?
A. Think twice before we leap. B. Stay optimistic all the time.
C. Pass on love. D. Never give up.

Yet loneliness has become so widespread that it is often termed a modern epidemic. Why? A common explanation is the loss of “social connection.” What does it really mean to be socially connected? Is it quantified by the number of one’s friends both online and offline, or is it defined by the quality and depth of these relationships? However, some experts argue that loneliness transcends mere social isolation. It is possible to maintain hundreds of digital connections yet still endure profound feelings of loneliness.
Norwegian writer Hilde Østby, in her book So Lonely, suggests that loneliness emerges when there’s a gap between the social connections we desire and those we actually possess. Individuals in densely populated urban areas frequently report higher levels of loneliness than those in rural communities. While strong social ties can reduce loneliness, close-knit societies report high loneliness rates.
Østby further investigates the psychological and physical effects of loneliness. It is linked to emotions like grief and shame, and it can even harm one’s health. She believes that loneliness is sometimes caused by social division — marginalization (边缘化) due to racism, sexism, or other forms of prejudice. She coins the word “lonelify” to describe this process — how people are deliberately made to feel excluded. However, loneliness is not only caused by social exclusion. It can affect anyone, regardless of age or background. Although technology and contemporary lifestyles may contribute to the problem, at its core, loneliness remains a profoundly human experience.
Østby’s book encourages us to rethink loneliness — not just as a personal issue, but as a social one. She calls for more inclusive communities and reminds us that small acts of kindness, like a smile or a conversation, can help others feel less alone. After all, in a world where so many feel lonely, connection might be the cure we all need.
28. What does the underlined word “transcends” in paragraph 1 most probably mean?
A. results from. B. goes beyond. C. depends on. D. equals.
29 What factor does Hilde Østby believe leads to loneliness?
A. Numerous online friends only. B. Urban living environments.
C. A gap in social connections. D. Long-term social isolation.
30. What can we infer from the author’s discussion of Østby’s views?
A. Needs individual and societal efforts. B. Technology is the root cause.
C. Mainly affects marginalized groups. D. Small kindnesses are most effective.
31. What is the passage’s main purpose?
A. Explain loneliness’s causes and solutions. B. Analyze social connections and loneliness.
C. Argue loneliness is a societal issue. D. Introduce a book and its insights.
D
Have you ever witnessed the astonishing beauty of auroras (极光)? They are a gift from the heavens resulting from the interaction between the atmosphere and cosmic radiation
However, in South Korea, a flight attendant, 53, died from cancer due to long exposure to intense cosmic radiation. According to South Korean authorities, the flight attendant flew about 1,022 annual hours throughout his career, with half of his flights spent crossing the regions in and around the North Pole, where cosmic radiation reaches extraordinarily high levels. Cosmic radiation, which comes from the sun and other stars in the galaxy, is constantly hitting Earth. Cosmic radiation can be divided into two types: solar radiation and galactic cosmic radiation. Solar radiation comprises charged particles (带电粒子) sent out by the sun, known as the solar wind, while galactic cosmic radiation comes from the remaining parts of supernovas (超新星).
Despite the continuous and powerful nature of cosmic radiation, we are generally protected from their worst effects. Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere provide protection from this radiation, with the magnetic field being strongest in tropical areas and weakest at the poles. Consequently, individuals living in higher latitudes (纬度), like Heilongjiang province, experience slightly more cosmic radiation than those in lower latitudes, such as Hainan province. Moreover, at higher altitudes, such as when passengers are flying on an airplane, the thinner atmosphere results in more intense exposure to cosmic radiation.
For astronauts and flight attendants on polar routes, lacking the protection offered by Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere exposes them to potential health risks. According to NASA, astronauts who spend six months in space encounter a radiation exposure roughly equal to undergoing 1,000 chest X-rays.
However, what makes cosmic radiation dangerous also holds treatment potential. Joseph, a particle physicist and his members found the high speed and energy of cosmic radiation have provided insights into treating tumors. Scientists can now artificially produce charged particles similar to cosmic radiation. Compared to conventional radiotherapy, charged particles can target tumors more effectively with less harm to the surrounding healthy tissues, according to Joseph.
32. What can we know about cosmic radiation from paragraph 2?
A. It may lead to a higher risk of cancer.
B. It is composed of charged particles alone.
C. It generates harmful substances in the atmosphere.
D. It mainly results from the remaining parts of supernovas
33. Who would be exposed to the most cosmic radiation?
A. Passengers flying on an airplane.
B. Residents living in Hainan province.
C. Workers exploring at the poles.
D. Researchers studying in the tropical areas.
34. Which statement does Joseph probably agree with ?
A. Cosmic radiation can confirm the tumor types.
B. Cosmic radiation can cure cancer patients.
C. Cosmic radiotherapy does no harm to patients’ tissues.
D. Cosmic radiation is promising in the medical application.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Cosmic Radiation: Hidden Health Risks
B. Cosmic Radiation: Dangers for Airworkers
C. Cosmic Radiation: a Doubleedged Sword
D. Cosmic Radiation: Hope for Medical Treatment
Everyone knows that it takes 21 days to develop a new habit. We probably owe this particular example of pop-psychology wisdom to Maxwell Maltz, the plastic surgeon who claimed to have observed that individuals who had had an arm or leg cut off took an average of only 21 days to adjust to the loss of a limb (肢体). ____36____. And therefore it must take 21 days to change a habit, maybe, perhaps!
____37____, as a new study by psychologist Phillippa Lally and her colleagues helps confirm. On average, her subjects, who were trying to learn new habits such as eating fruit daily or going jogging, took a depressing 66 days before reporting that the behaviour had become unchangingly automatic. ____38____. It couldn’t be just as easy to start eating a few more apples as to start finding five hours a week to study Chinese.
Self- help culture sticks to the fiction of the 21-day rule, probably because it makes habit change sound basically easy. ____39____. Our brains are designed to take short cuts, making as many behaviours as possible automatic. “Really,” asks the psychologist Ian Newby-Clark,“ what would be the point of having a habit that didn’t free up your mind to focus on more pressing matters?” Habits are meant to be difficult to change.
Another problem is that we tend to think about habit change wrongly. We want to, say, stop watching so much TV, but on the other hand, demonstrably, we also want to watch lots of TV — after all, we keep doing it. We’re stuck deep in what the Greeks called “akrasia”: deciding on the best course of action, then doing something else. ___40___. Simply stop watching TV is like dealing with a leaky bathroom tap by repainting the kitchen. What’s required is an alternative way to feel relaxed and happy. Maybe by looking at the problem differently we can slip out of them.
A. This is, of course, nonsense
B. The 21- day rule does have some scientific basis
C. We believe that habits are purely a matter of willpower
D. The way round this is to see that habits are responses to needs
E. Therefore, he reasoned the same must be true of all big changes
F. And some habits, unsurprisingly , were harder than others to make stick
G. One problem with this is discouragingly simple: changing habits is hard

When I was in Primary Five, I was in the basketball school team. Every month we would have a basketball match against another school’s basketball team. In spite of all the cheers we received from our classmates and the amount of training we had, we had never won a single match before. That was due to our lack of teamwork and cooperation.
During one of our training sessions, our school team was divided into two to have a match against each other. The inter-school competition was coming up and none of us wanted to miss our chance of getting that gold trophy(奖品). “Three, two, one, start!” our basketball coach, Coach Leong, shouted. John, who was in my team, managed to grab the ball that Coach Leong threw in the air. Since John grabbed the ball, he refused to let anyone, not even his teammates, take it.
“Pass the ball to me, John!” I shouted. I was in a good position to shoot the ball into the hoop(篮筐). To my shock, John made a rude face at me. I made an attempt to grab the ball from him. When I got my hands on the ball, it became a tug-of-war(激烈竞争) between John and me. Coach Leong shook his head and exploded like an active volcano. “Children! Is this the type of behavior that I should be seeing? The match is in two weeks! Do you even know the importance of teamwork?” Coach Leong gave us a disappointed look. It seemed as if he had some sad news to tell us.
I was right.
Coach Leong explained that he would be retiring after the match. “I hope you can show me your teamwork and cooperate with one another in this match before I retire.” I choked on my tears. My heart sank. We were giving Coach Leong such a tough time, when all he wanted was for us to show teamwork in the match. After that day, my teammates and I were determined to do our best and work as a team.

1. 续写词数应150左右;

On the day of the match, we stood face-to-face with our opponents, the team from River Primary School. Once again, Coach Leong reminded us to work as a team. The referee blew the whistle and flung the basketball into the air. I knew I had to give my team a head start, so I leaped up in the air to grab the ball. "John, catch!" I yelled at the top of my voice. John was short but he could run at lightning speed, and I think the other team assumed he was the last person I would pass the ball to. Before the opposing team could reach John, he had already shot the ball into the basketball hoop. Our team cheered with joy, and I punched the air twice with my fist.
John did a perfect overhead throw, and I caught the ball in mid-air. As the entire opposing team charged towards me, I kept my calm even though I was surrounded. I threw the ball over their heads. It flew through the air like a missile into the hands of Eric, who was standing right behind our opponents, next to the basketball hoop. Eric dunked the ball in. We won the match 5-0. Finally, we managed to work as a team and Coach Leong was very satisfied. Each of us received a trophy for our amazing efforts. As I recalled the match, I smiled as I looked at the trophy. I realized that the most important thing was not the trophy but the value of teamwork that I had learnt from that match.

根据第一个活动Poetry Exchange Workshop里有提到“Start National Poetry Month off right by heading to this monthly poetry workshop to listen to poets read their works, have your works critiqued and learn some new poetry writing skills. (参加这个每月一次的诗歌研讨会,听诗人朗诵他们的作品,让你的作品受到批评,学习一些新的诗歌写作技巧,开始全国诗歌月吧。)”,可知,一个想要改善写作技巧的诗歌爱好者可以参加该活动。故选A。

根据第一段第一句“In a city like Pittsburgh that is full of universities, libraries and theatres, celebrating National Poetry Month is easy. (在一座像匹兹堡这样充满大学、图书馆与剧院的城市,庆祝全国诗歌月是一件容易的事情。)”可知,本文最可能出自匹兹堡市的当地地方媒体来宣传这四个庆祝全国诗歌月的活动事项。故选B。
B
B 25. D 26. A 27. C

She is the founder of Beauty 2 The Streetz, a nonprofit organization that provides free food, clothing, haircuts, and make-up services for the homeless.(雪莉·雷恩斯让洛杉矶贫民窟社区的无家可归者感受到了人性的温暖。 和第三段“Shirley started to volunteer every Saturday. So she started an outdoor beauty salon to serve the homeless.(雪莉开始每周六去做志愿者。
根据文章第一段中“Shirley is now the CNN Hero of the Year!(雪莉现在是CNN年度英雄。)”以及“She is the founder of Beauty 2 The Streetz, a nonprofit organization that provides free food, clothing, haircuts, and make-up services for the homeless.(她是Beauty 2 The Streetz的创始人,这是一个为无家可归者提供免费食物、衣物、理发和化妆服务的非营利组织。)”
根据文章第四段中“Her Instagram followers grew to over 200,000 people, including many beauty professionals such as licensed hairstylists, barbers, make-up artists. Many of them regularly donate money to keep the services rolling.(她的Instagram粉丝增长到超过20万人,其中包括许多美容专业人士,如持证发型师、理发师、化妆师。他们中的许多人定期捐款,以保持服务继续。)”可知,这些美容专业人士捐赠时间和金钱支持她的组织,因此提到他们是为了展示他们对组织的贡献。故选A。
根据文章最后一段“Shirley’s boldness, caring, courage, consistency (连贯性), and desire to take action have led to making a real impact on people’s lives. And she also serves as a role model for and an inspiration to others.(雪莉的大胆、关心、勇气、一致性和采取行动的愿望对人们的生活产生了真正的影响。她也成为了他人的榜样和灵感来源。)”可知,作者通过讲述雪莉的故事,鼓励读者像雪莉一样传递爱心,为他人带来帮助和温暖。故选C。

【语篇导读】本文是一篇议论文。文章介绍Hilde Østby著作及对孤独的成因、影响与应对的观点。
【28题详解】词句猜测题。根据第一段中“However, some experts argue that loneliness transcends mere social isolation. It is possible to maintain hundreds of digital connections yet still endure profound feelings of loneliness.(然而,一些专家认为,孤独transcends单纯的社会孤立。即使维持着数百个数字社交联系,人们仍可能承受深刻的孤独感。)”可知,即便有数百个线上社交联系,人们仍可能深感孤独,这说明孤独并非仅源于社交孤立,而是超出了社交孤立的范畴。“transcends”在此处意为“超出、超越”,与“goes beyond”含义相近。故选B。
【29题详解】细节理解题。根据第二段中“Norwegian writer Hilde Østby, in her book So Lonely, suggests that loneliness emerges when there’s a gap between the social connections we desire and those we actually possess.(挪威作家Hilde Østby在她的《如此孤独》一书中指出,当我们期望的社交联系与实际拥有的社交联系之间存在差距时,孤独就会产生。)”
根据最后一段中“Østby’s book encourages us to rethink loneliness — not just as a personal issue, but as a social one. She calls for more inclusive communities and reminds us that small acts of kindness, like a smile or a conversation, can help others feel less alone.(Østby在书中鼓励我们重新审视孤独——它不只是个人问题,更是一个社会问题。她呼吁建立更具包容性的社群,同时提醒我们,一个微笑、一次交谈这类小小的善举,都能帮助他人减轻孤独感。)”可知,Østby认为孤独既是个人问题也是社会问题,既需要个人用善意行动帮助他人,也需要社会构建更包容的群体。由此可推断,解决孤独问题需要个人和社会共同努力。故选A。
根据文章内容,尤其是最后一段中“Østby’s book encourages us to rethink loneliness — not just as a personal issue, but as a social one. 【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。本文探讨了关于习惯改变的一些常见误解,特别是“21天养成一个新习惯”的说法。
【36题详解】
根据前文“We probably owe this particular example of pop- psychology wisdom to Maxwell Maltz, the plastic surgeon who claimed to have observed that individuals who had had an arm or leg cut off took an average of only 21 days to adjust to the loss of a limb (肢体). (我们可能要把这个流行心理学智慧的特别例子归功于整形外科医生Maxwell Maltz,他声称自己观察到,失去一条胳膊或一条腿的人平均只需要21天就能适应一条肢体的失去。)”可知,此处陈述了Maxwell Maltz的观点。E选项“Therefore, he reasoned the same must be true of all big changes(因此,他推断所有大的变化都是如此)”承接前文,选项中的he指代前文的Maxwell Maltz,符合语境。故选E。
根据前文“And therefore it must take 21 days to change a habit, maybe, perhaps!( 因此,改变一个习惯必须花21天,也许,也许!)”以及后文“as a new study by psychologist Phillippa Lally and her colleagues helps confirm. On average, her subjects, who were trying to learn new habits such as eating fruit daily or going jogging, took a depressing 66 days before reporting that the behaviour had become unchangingly automatic. 故选A。
根据后文“It couldn’t be just as easy to start eating a few more apples as to start finding five hours a week to study Chinese.( 开始多吃几个苹果不可能像开始每周抽出五个小时学习中文那么容易。)” F选项“And some habits, unsurprisingly , were harder than others to make stick(不出所料,有些习惯比其他习惯更难坚持)”直接指出了不同习惯养成的难易程度不同,照应后文中将吃苹果和学韩语相对比的例子。故选F。
根据前文“Self- help culture sticks to the fiction of the 21- day rule, probably because it makes habit change sound basically easy.(自助文化坚持21天规则的虚构,可能是因为它使习惯改变听起来基本上很容易。)”
根据前文“Another problem is that we tend to think about habit change wrongly. We want to, say, stop watching so much TV, but on the other hand, demonstrably, we also want to watch lots of TV —— after all, we keep doing it. We’re stuck deep in what the Greeks called “akrasia”: deciding on the best course of action, then doing something else. (另一个问题是,我们倾向于错误地思考习惯的改变。比如说,我们想停止看那么多电视,但另一方面,很明显,我们也想看很多电视——毕竟,我们一直在看电视。我们深陷希腊人所说的“akrasia”:决定最好的行动方针,然后做其他事情。)”可知,前面提到的是我们在习惯改变上的错误思维方式,即想要做某事(如少看电视),但实际上却继续做其它的事。D选项“The way round this is to see that habits are responses to needs(解决这个问题的方法是认识到习惯是对需求的反应)”针对前文的问题提出了解决方案即要理解并满足我们的真正需求,而不是简单地错误地改变某个习惯。故选D。

故填what。

M: ⑧What are you looking at on your phone? Oh, who’s this actress? I don’t think I’ve seen her before.
W: That’s Tilly Norwood, Hollywood’s new “hopeful”. She’s not actually human—she’s an AI-generated actor trained on the work of countless professional performers. She might start appearing in movies soon.
M: What? So she’s not a real actress, just a computer-generated character? ⑨That’s troubling—it’s like using stolen performances to replace real actors, no matter how perfect her acting seems.
Text 8(182

M: Have you ever done other work?
W: ⑮Before becoming a travel writer, I briefly worked in product publicity. I once handed out free makeup samples on the streets of Montreal.
M: Do you have any tips for aspiring travel writers?
W: ⑯You need to take a fresh perspective on an old subject. Many places have been written about extensively, so you need to find something new to grab your readers’ attention.
M: Finally, Jessica, what do you see for yourself in the future?
W: ⑰Well, I’ve had TV offers, but they don’t attract me. I’ll never stop moving. The appeal of the unknown will always be there for me, even when I can no longer make travel my profession.
Text 10(187
W: Today, I’d like to share a story about 80-year-old Natalie Grabow, who completed the 2025 Ironman World Championship Triathlon. A triathlon is a tough three-part race that includes swimming, biking, and running, and the Ironman is the most famous and challenging of them all. Ms. Grabow finished it, becoming the oldest woman ever to do so.
She has always been athletic. ⑱When her kids were young, she played tennis, and later, she took up running when she returned to work. Some of her running friends joined triathlons, which inspired her to try—but she didn’t know how to swim. At 59, she began learning. ⑲In 2005, she completed her first half Ironman, and just one year later, she competed in the full-distance Ironman. She has now finished the race 11 times.
See? Ms. Grabow never stopped challenging herself. ⑳I know some of you may feel that, as this is your final year of junior high, it’s too late to start learning seriously. But remember—if you’re willing to begin, it’s never too late. And if you ever need a hand, you know where my office is.
