February 2 is the Groundhog (土拨鼠) Day in North America. The groundhog is the only animal with its own holiday.
Groundhogs spend the winter sleeping. This keeps them warm during the long, cold winter. Tradition says that the groundhog leaves its home on February 2. If it does not see its shadow, then spring will come early that year.
Scientists don't believe in this tradition. They say it is just a fun day, but people keep thinking that animals can tell what the weather will be like. In France and England, they look to the bear to know about the cold weather. In Germany, people look to the badger (獾). Americans look to the groundhog. This may be because there were so many groundhogs when people first came to America.

In summer, they prepare(准备) lots of grass to eat in winter. By the end of summer, a pika may store 22 kilos of grass.
Some animals change themselves to live in winter, like snowshoe rabbits in America. In summer, the rabbits' fur(毛) is brown. But they grow new, white fur in winter. The new fur keeps them safe in snow. In fall, they eat and eat to get fat(脂肪), because the fat can also help them keep warm in winter.
Other animals sleep all winter long and they don't eat at all. Before winter, these animals eat a lot to grow fat. When winter comes, they go to sleep. Black bears in cold areas make warm beds to sleep in. By the time spring comes, they lose most of their fat.

Dogs have soft, lovely fur and warm, bright eyes. They love eating meat and bones, and often live happily in people's homes. They can run fast and are good at guarding houses. Dogs often help people in an earthquake. They help us feel safe, and they also need our care and love. I think dogs are truly fantastic and helpful. Let's be friendly to them!

February 2 is the Groundhog (土拨鼠) Day in North America. The groundhog is the only animal with its own holiday.
Groundhogs spend the winter sleeping. This keeps them warm during the long, cold winter. Tradition says that the groundhog leaves its home on February 2. If it sees its shadow(影子) on this day, it will return to its home for six more weeks. Then there will be six more weeks of winter.
One town in Pennsylvania is famous for the Groundhog Day. This town has a groundhog named Phil. Many people come to see it on February 2. They want to know if Phil will see its shadow. There is a big party on the Groundhog Day. They learn when spring is coming, too.
