Ieoh Ming Pei is a Chinese-American architect (建筑师) known as the master (大师) of modern architecture (建筑). He won many important awards in architecture. Pei designed some of the world’s most special buildings and famous landmarks (地标). He incorporated both eastern and western ideas into his designs.
He was born in Guangzhou, China in 1917. His family dates back to the Ming Dynasty, during which they moved to Suzhou—then the center of economy (经济) and culture in China. They became rich through the sale of medicinal herbs. Pei spent his holidays there visiting many gardens and family shrines (宗祠). He loved the interesting rocks, stone bridges and waterfalls.
Pei moved with his family to Shanghai at the age of ten. The city’s international architectural styles had a lasting influence on him, from the Bund waterfront area to the Park Hotel. His interest in architecture was developing.

Thanks to technology, the way we communicate with others has greatly changed. How do you feel about it? Would you prefer to live in a world with or without mobile phones?
I ordered some snacks on my phone the other afternoon. Once I got home from work that evening, I saw they were already at my door. So prompt! Have you ever thought about how people in the past communicated and did things without mobile phones? Take the post for example (拿邮递举个例子). Before phones, if you wanted to keep in touch with someone far away, you needed to send them a letter in the mail. When my mum was in primary school, she used to do this with her “pen pal”. A pen pal is a name for a person you keep in touch with mainly through postal mail. My mum would write to her pen pal every few months, and then, after a little while, her pen pal would write back. Later, once email became a common thing, sending letters by post felt so slow to people. It became known as “snail mail”!
What if you were at an airport in the time before mobile phones? My dad said that in the 1970s, there used to be message boards at some airports. If you needed to exit (离开) the airport and wanted to leave a message for a friend who would be arriving later, you could write them a message and stick it on the message board. Then, your friend could check the board later and see what you wrote to them!
63.What does the underlined word “prompt” mean in Paragraph 2?
A.Wise. B.Polite. C.Quick. D.Helpful.
64.How did the writer’s mum keep in touch with her pen pal?
A.By talking on phones. B.By mailing letters.
C. By visiting every few months. D.By writing diaries.
65.Where could people leave messages at some airports in the 1970s?
A.On the message boards. B.At the information desk.
C.On the door of the exit. D.On the boarding gate of the plane.
66.What is the story mainly about?
A.How fast it is to buy things nowadays.
B.How people kept in touch before.
C.The importance of communication.
D.Ways of making friends in the past.
D
In ancient China, letters were sent by pigeons and packages by horses. Common people could hardly afford it. In 1866, China opened its very first post office. That was the beginning of China’s postal service. With a small stamp on the cover, people in big cities could send letters and packages. Bikes, ships and trains carried them across mountains and rivers in the country, even abroad.
After the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, the postal service grew rapidly. Post offices were set up all across the country. Their services stretched to even the quietest, farthest villages. That made communication much easier for people in every corner of the country. College students could write to their parents in hometowns. Friends and relatives could send packages on festivals to greet each other.
Since the 1990s, a new branch of postal service, the delivery industry, has also grown rapidly. Take the year 2020 for example. Every second, over 6 000 packages were on the move. More than 500 million packages were processed and put into trucks. In the whole year, over 180 billion were sent across the country. And the fastest delivery took only several hours!
Now, “speed” is no longer the only key word in this industry. Many delivery services have started to go green. Each year, more than 890 million boxes are reused or recycled. Besides, smart packing models are widely used. There’s no doubt that delivery services are smart and friendly to our environment.
From pigeons and horses to delivery trucks, China’s postal history shows how this old great nation has developed and progressed. Looking forward, will China’s postal service fly to the moon and other planets in the future?
67.What happened in 1866 according to the passage?
A.Stamps were invented in China.
B.China’s first post office was opened.
C.People stopped using pigeons and horses.
68.What does the underlined phrase “stretched to” mean in Paragraph 2?
A.Reported. B.Missed. C.Reached.
69.What can we learn from the last sentence of the passage?
A.The writer hopes to live on other planets.
B.The writer shows interest in space history.
C.The writer has confidence in China’s postal service.
70.How does the writer organize the passage?
A.In the order of time. B.From reasons to results. C.From opinions to facts.

Thanks to technology, the way we communicate with others has greatly changed. How do you feel about it?
Would you prefer to live in a world with or without mobile phones?
I ordered some snacks on my phone the other afternoon.Once I got home from work that evening,I saw
they were already at my door.So prompt!Have you ever thought about how people in the past communicated and
did things without mobile phones?Take the post for example(拿邮递举个例子).Before phones,.if you wanted to
keep in touch with someone far away, you needed to send them a letter in the mail. When my mum was in primary
school, she used to do this with her "pen pal'.A pen pal is a name for a person you keep in touch with mainly
through postal mail.My mum would write to her pen pal every few months, and then, after a little while, her pen
pal would write back.Later, once email became a common thing, sending letters by post felt so slow to people. It
became known as“snail mail'!
What if you were at an airport in the time before mobile phones? My dad said that in the 1970s,there used
to be message boards at some airports. If you needed to exit (the airport and wanted to leave a message for a
friend who would be arriving later, you could write them a message and stick it on the message board. Then, your
friend could check the board later and see what you wrote to them!

66.What is the story mainly about?
A.How fast it is to buy things nowadays.
B.How people kept in touch before.
C.The importance of communication.
D.Ways of making friends in the past.
D
In ancient China, letters were sent by pigeons and packages by horses.Common people could hardly afford
it.In 1866,China opened its very first post office. That was the beginning of China's postal service. With a small
stamp on the cover, people in big cities could send letters and packages.Bikes, ships and trains carried them across
mountains and rivers in the country, even abroad.
After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949,the postal service grew rapidly.Post offices
were set up all across the country.Their services stretched to even the quietest, farthest villages. That made
communication much easier for people in every corner of the country.College students could write to their parents
in hometowns.Friends and relatives could send packages on festivals to greet each other.

green. Each year, more than 890 million boxes are reused or recycled.Besides, smart packing models are widely

C.The writer has confidence in China’s postal service.
70.How does the writer organize the passage?
A.In the order of time. B.From reasons to results. C.From opinions to facts.
