2026 Asian Games Closing: China’s Great Success
The 2026 Asian Games ended on October 4th in Japan. For the Chinese delegation (代表团), the Games were full of unforgettable moments. China won a total of 169 gold, 89 silver, and 83 bronze medals. With this amazing achievement, China topped the medal table for the 12th time in a row.
Chinese athletes did very well in many different sports. In swimming, they won 30 gold medals. In diving, China continued its long-time success. On September 30th, Lian Junjie won the men’s 10-meter platform title. This was China’s 100th diving gold medal in Asian Games history since 1974. Young athletes also caught a lot of attention. Thirteen-year-old swimmer Yu Zidi set a new Asian Games record in the women’s 200-meter butterfly. Her excellent performance showed that some of China’s young athletes are already competing at a very high level.
China also did well in team events. The men’s artistic gymnastics (竞技体操) team successfully defended its title, winning the team championship for the third time.
Behind these medals were years of hard training. Some athletes were young newcomers, while others had lots of experience. Their stories show that success in sports does not come from one good day. It requires talent, hard work, and the ability to keep improving. For the Chinese athletes, winning medals was important, but the experience of competing, learning, and challenging themselves was also a big part of the journey.

Students learn their lessons in class. They sit in the classroom and listen to their teachers. This is a common (常见的) way of learning.
Is this the only way for students to learn something? Of course not. There is another way to learn—you can teach yourself. For example, if you cannot remember what you learn at school today when you are doing your homework, what will you do? You can look at your books. This is a way to teach yourself, and it is not a hard thing. You can do this at any place and at any time.
How do you teach yourself? First, you must read. Read something you want to read, or you have to read. Second, you must ask yourself questions. The questions are something you don’t understand (理解) or you want to know about. You can write down these questions. A clever student is also good at asking questions. Third, you must answer the questions yourself by thinking hard, by reading books and sometimes by asking other people. These are the ways of teaching yourself. If you work like this for a long time, you are sure to be more successful (成功) in your study.
9.What does the underlined word “This” in paragraph 1 refer to (指代)?
A.Listening to the radio. B.Talking in groups.
C.Learning in the classroom. D.Staying with the teachers.
10.What can we infer (推断) according to paragraph 2?
A.It’s good for you to study at home. B.Teaching yourself is a difficult thing.
C.One must do homework to learn better. D.You can learn more by teaching yourself.
11.What should you do first when you teach yourself?
A.Think hard. B.Read books. C.Ask questions. D.Answer questions.
12.In which part of a magazine can you probably read the passage?
A.Education. B.Travelling. C.Health. D.Nature.

A recent survey shows that a quarter of people aged 18 to 34 never answer the phone. Instead, they often ignore (忽视) the ringing, reply with text, or search for the number online if they don’t recognize it. While talking on the phone is common for older generations, most young people prefer texting to phone calls. This change has given rise to a generation of texters. For them, mobile phone calls are kept only for emergencies, and landlines (座机) are mainly used to speak with grandparents.
Psychologist Elena Touroni mentions that young people find answering the phone strange because it’s not a habit they’ve developed. They will fear the worst when their phone starts ringing. More than half of them connect unexpected calls with bad news. Another researcher Eloise Skinner explains that this worry about calls comes from a sense of foreboding. Skinner adds that as our lives get busier, we have less time to call a friend just to talk about our daily life. Therefore, phone calls are used for very important news, which is often difficult and challenging to discuss through texting.
Jack Longley, 26, shares this view, adding that he never replies to unknown numbers because they are likely cheaters or salespeople. For him, it’s easier to ignore calls than sift (筛选) through the noise to find legitimate (合法的) ones.
Many conversations now take place on social media where it’s easier to send pictures together with texts. This communication style allows young people to join in conversations whenever they like and give more thoughtful replies. Still, with a growing preference for text-based communication, we must consider whether we are losing the ability to have unplanned and informal talks. Skinner warns that if this continues, “we might lose a sense of closeness or connection.” “When we communicate by speaking, we feel more connected emotionally and personally,” she adds. “This connection can make us feel pleased.”
Just as people refused the change from fax (传真) to email 25 years ago—a change that finally made communication more convenient—we may now need to recognize the power of text. Probably it’s time to consider leaving behind the “fearful” phone calls, just as we stopped using the fax machine in the 1990s.
13.What does the underlined word “foreboding” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.A feeling that something bad will happen. B.A habit that is hard to develop.
C.A worry about talking to strangers. D.A thought that phone calls waste time.
14.What can we know about Jack Longley?
A.He never talks to anyone he doesn’t know.
B.He thinks all the salespeople calling him are cheaters.
C.He believes refusing unknown calls saves him trouble.
D.He finds making phone calls is more difficult than texting.
15.The following sentence can be put at the beginning of ________.
However, not speaking on the phone doesn’t mean that young people aren’t connecting with their friends.
A.Paragraph 2 B.Paragraph 3 C.Paragraph 4 D.Paragraph 5
16.The passage is mainly about ________.
A.showing why phone calls make young people feel stressed
B.discussing the advantages of texting and making phone calls
C.warning that young people are losing the ability to communicate
D.explaining why young people avoid calls and suggesting accepting the change
【答案】13.A 14.C 15.C 16.D
根据文章第二段第二、三句“They will fear the worst when their phone starts ringing. More than half of them connect unexpected calls with bad news.”
根据文章第三段第二句“For him, it's easier to ignore calls than sift through the noise to find legitimate ones.”
根据第四段原第一句“Many conversations now take place on social media where it’s easier to send pictures together with texts”可推知,该段主要讲述年轻人借助社交媒体与人沟通。
根据文章最后一段最后一句“Probably it’s time to consider leaving behind the ‘fearful’ phone calls, just as we stopped using the fax machine in the 1990s.”
At 8 p. m. on a weekday, the waiting room at a hospital in Beijing is full of people in their 20s or 30s. 17 The waiting room looks more like a gym than a place in the hospital.
Doctors say that more young people are coming to see them for pain or injuries (疼痛或损伤) from exercise. 18 Some have pains because they use phones and computers too much. Others get hurt because they play sports too hard or don’t know the right way to work out.
To get better, many young people try something called sports rehabilitation (康复). It uses medical tools, manual therapy (手法治疗) and exercise to help the body. Doctors say medical tools and manual therapy like manipulation (推拿) can help people feel less pain. 19 So, sports rehabilitation also includes (包括) exercise. This way, people not only feel better but also become stronger. This is also why some people joke that the hospital feels like a sports club!
20 When they feel pain, they go to the doctor right away. They not only solve problems, but are also learning to take care of their bodies before problems start.
A.However, they can’t solve the problem once and for all.
B.They like to keep fit by doing sports in the fitness centre.
C.Some have back pain because they sit for too long at work.
D.Doctors say young people today care more about their health.
E.While waiting, they talk about sports and share exercise advice.

C项“Some have back pain because they sit for too long at work.”
A项“However, they can’t solve the problem once and for all.”
D项“Doctors say young people today care more about their health.”

His speech at the school’s opening ceremony was 8 minutes long, but the video has been watched more than 250 million times. Many people said they were moved to tears.

He also gave teachers two half-days of paid leave each month.
Second, he asked teachers and parents to pay attention to students’ growth beyond grades. He said that not every seed needs to grow into a tall tree. Some students may not go to university, but they can still be useful people. He mentioned that some graduates of his school run restaurants, sell barbecue, or do housework for others. He said any child who works hard and is kind should be respected.

A.Paragraph 2 B.Paragraph 3 C.Paragraph 4 D.Paragraph 5

B.discussing the advantages of texting and making phone calls

At 8 p. m. on a weekday, the waiting room at a hospital in Beijing is full of people in their 20s or 30s.
