Sophie used to be the queen of last-minute changes. Why? She believed those changes were the only way to prove her self-value. She rewrote imperfect paragraphs, again and again all night, afraid she didn’t seem smart enough and worried she would disappoint others. In class, Sophie was too tired to focus because “imperfect” felt like “not good enough”.
Then one afternoon came a turning point. During a physics lab class, Sophie was tired after perfecting a lab report. Her partner Joe said, “You’re really good at this, but you’ll burn out if you keep pushing so hard.” Joe’s words struck her, and she thought, “What if I don’t need to be perfect to be valued?”
Shortly after that, Sophie started making small changes. For an English poem, she limited the editing time to 30 minutes — then she made herself stop, even though she was eager to improve more. Surprisingly, her teacher wrote back, “Your creative ideas stand out!” She had never been so touched — it was liked even though it wasn’t perfect. Before a math presentation, Sophie practiced only twice and then went for ice cream with friends. Laughing with them, she realized, “Spending time with people who care about me matters more than a perfect speech.” When she presented, the class clapped and no one noticed her shaky voice.
Now, Sophie still puts effort into her work, but not at the cost of sleep, friends, or her health. Sophie tells herself: “I’m enough because I go all out.” She has learned that “good enough” — even with imperfection — is truly enough.
4. Why did Sophie often stay up?
A. She had difficulty in writing. B. She wanted to perfect her work.
C. She couldn’t focus on her study. D. She had too much homework to do.
5. What made Sophie start to reflect her mindset?
A. Teacher’s praise. B. Peer’s reminding. C. Friends’ company. D. Her health condition.
6. How does the author develop the text?
A. By following time order. B. By using cause-effect structure.
C. By describing a process step by step. D. By analyzing advantages and disadvantages.
7. What does the text mainly tell us?
A. Don’t seek perfection at all costs.
B. We should go all out to be perfect.
C. Perfection is the key to gaining others’ respect.
D. Making small changes can lead to great success.
C
The human brain remembers negative experiences more easily than positive ones. Our brains have developed in this way because threats, like dangerous animals, have a more immediate effect on people’s survival compared to positive things like food or shelter. As a result, you clearly know what makes you unhappy, but do you know what makes you happy?
Research suggests that our level of happiness is partly shaped by the choices we make. If you’ve been chasing wealth, fame, power and some material things, you may be looking for happiness in the wrong places. Psychologists suggest that the following habits can make people happier.
People who own close relationships tend to be happier than those who do not. The number of our friends is not important. What matters is the quality of our relationships. Relationships that bring happiness usually consist of the sharing of feelings, acceptance, mutual (互相的) respect and trust.
People who exercise regularly can improve both their physical and mental well- being. Some research has shown that exercise can be as effective as some medicine in treating depression.
If we are so interested in an activity, we may lose track of time, and we can be in a state of flow. The activity could be playing the piano, surfing the Internet or playing a game... People who experience flow in their work or life tend to be happier.
People are more likely to be happy if they know what their strengths are and can use them regularly. People are especially happy when they can set goals and use their strengths to achieve them.
People, who think positively by being grateful, mindful and optimistic, are more likely to be happy. Being grateful means being thankful. Being mindful means considering, focusing on, and enjoying the experiences of the present moment. Being optimistic means being hopeful about the future.
8. Why do human brains remember negative things more easily?
A. Because negative things are easy to remember.
B. Because negative things can make people live much happier.
C. Because negative things are much more important than other things.
D. Because negative things tend to affect human survival immediately.
9. According to this passage, in which of the following can people not find happiness?
A. Chasing power. B. Doing sports.
C. Playing the violin. D. Making friends.
10. In the last paragraph, what does the author try to tell us?
A. We should think more about our future. B. We should be positive in our life and work.
C. We should focus on everything in our life. D. We should only enjoy the present moment.
11. What does the passage mainly want to tell us?
A. Some habits that make people happy. B. The habits people form in their life.
C. Why people remember positive things easily. D. Why people remember negative things easily.
D
If you want to become a fluent English speaker, you should take some advice: there are four skills in learning English. They are listening, speaking, reading and writing. The most important thing you must remember is that if you want to improve your speaking and writing skills, you should first gain the skills of reading and listening.
Read as much as you can. But your reading must be active. It means that you must think about the meaning of the sentences, the meaning of the unfamiliar words, etc.
There is no need for you to pay much attention to grammar or try to understand all the unfamiliar words you come across, but the fact you see them for the first time and recognize them whenever you see them, for example in other passages or books, is enough. It would be better to prepare yourself a notebook so you can write down the important words or sentences in it.
As for listening, there are two choices: besides reading, you can listen every day for about 30 minutes. You can only pay attention to your reading and become skillful at your reading, then you can catch up on your listening. Since you have lots of inputs (输入) in your mind, you can easily guess what the speaker is going to say. This never means that you should not practice listening.
For listening, you can listen to cartoons or some movies that are specially made for children. Their languages are easy. Or if you are good at listening, you can listen to VOA or BBC programs every day. Again the thing to remember is being active in listening and preferably taking some notes. If you follow these pieces of advice, your speaking and writing will improve automatically, and you can be sure that with a little effort they will become perfect.
12. According to the author, which should you improve first among the four skills?
A. Reading and listening. B. Reading and writing.
C. Writing and speaking. D. Speaking and listening.
13. To improve your reading, when you read, you should ________.
A. look up all the new words in the dictionary. B. think about what you are reading actively.
C. spend more time studying grammar. D. copy as many words and sentences as possible.
14. What does the underlined words “come across” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Meet by accident. B. Wind up. C. Lose on purpose. D. Look for.
15. Which of the following may the author agree with?
A. Everyone should listen to VOA or BBC programs every day.
B. You needn’t practice listening if you keep in reading every day.
C. Being good at reading is helpful in improving your listening.
D. You should take notes of whatever you are hearing.

From the first day he entered the classroom, Carol existed (存在) in his own world, shutting out his classmates and teachers. His math teacher Miss Smith tried to build a friendly relationship with him, but it was useless. Carol seemed to have no desire or need to break his silence (沉默).
Soon after the Thanksgiving holiday, the school held the yearly Christmas collection of money for the poor people in the school.
“Christmas is a season of giving,” Miss Smith told her students. “There are a few students in the school who might not have a happy holiday season. By contributing to our Christmas collection, you will help buy food, clothing and toys for these needy people. We will start the collection tomorrow.”
When Miss Smith called for the contributions the next day, she discovered that almost everyone had forgotten except for Carol. The boy dug deep into his pants pockets as he walked slowly to Miss Smith’s desk. Carefully, he dropped two coins into the small box.
“I don’t need milk for lunch,” he said in a low voice. For a moment, just a moment, he smiled. Then he turned and walked back to his desk. That night, after school, Miss Smith took their few contributions to the school principal (校长). She couldn’t help sharing the thing.
“I may be wrong, but I believe Carol might be getting ready to become a part of the world around him,” Miss Smith told the principal.
“Yes,” he nodded. “And we might do well to have him share a bit of his world with us. I just received a list of the poor families in our school who most need help. Here, take a look at it.”
As Miss Smith began to read, she discovered Carol and his family were the top names on the list. Seeing this, she was surprised and decided to do something for him.

Dear Tom,
How is everything going? I’m writing to tell you about my new life in senior high school.
Life here is quite different. We have more subjects and the teachers encourage us to be independent. I’ve also made some new friends. However, I faced a challenge too. I found it hard to balance study and club activities. To solve this, I made a detailed schedule and stuck to it. Now I feel less anxious.
I believe the next three years will be challenging but wonderful. I hope to learn more and make lasting memories.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】【参考范文】
Miss Smith went to visit Carol’s family later that day. Entering his house, Miss Smith was surprised to find there was only one room with a small bed and an old sofa. Carol was doing his homework on the sofa and his grandma was in bed. Obviously, they were leading a very hard life. When asked why he had given the two coins, he said, “There are people poorer than me, so I just want to give them some help.” Hearing his words, she couldn’t help bursting into tears.
The next day, Miss Smith had a special class for Carol. She didn’t mention Carol’s family situation publicly, but held up the two coins and told the whole class that Carol’s quiet kindness was the most precious Christmas gift they had received. All the students clapped warmly, and they walked over to put their own small handmade Christmas cards on Carol’s desk. For the first time since he came to this class, Carol looked up, his eyes glistening, and said a soft “thank you” out loud. The thick wall of silence that had wrapped around him for months finally crumbled.
