情景导入
Situational Lead-in
Step 1: Lead-in
1. Greet the students.
2. Picture Talk: Show the pictures of the four scientists (Roger Bacon, Galileo Galilei, Thomas Edison, Isaac Newton). Ask students:
"Do you know them?"
"What are they famous for?"
3. Let students share what they know in pairs, then invite a few to share with the class.
4. Purpose: To activate students' prior knowledge about famous scientists and introduce the topic of the lesson.

Step 2: Pre-reading.
1. Vocabulary Preview: Introduce the new words from the PPT (philosopher, observe, observation, prove, trial, error, investigation, investigate, efficiently, substance, filament, discouraged, react, statement).
2. Prediction: Ask students: "What do you think the passage will tell us about science and scientists?"
Step 3: While-reading
1. First Reading (Main Ideas): Ask students to read the passage quickly and match each scientist with their contribution:
Roger Bacon (1214–1292, English philosopher and scientist): Modern science started with him. He believed science comes from observing and experimenting on real-world things.
Galileo Galilei (1564–1642, Italian astronomer, physicist and mathematician): Did the Leaning Tower of Pisa experiment; proved heavy and light objects fall at the same rate; stressed proving ideas through experiments; known as "father of modern science".
Thomas A. Edison (1847–1931, American inventor): Used the method to invent the electric lamp; regarded failed tries as valuable experience.
Isaac Newton: Famous saying: "If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants."
2. Second Reading (Detailed Questions): Have students read again and answer:
"What did Roger Bacon believe about learning science?" (We must learn science by observing and experimenting on the things around us.)
"What did Galileo prove with his experiment at the Leaning Tower of Pisa?" (He proved that heavy and light objects fall at the same rate.)
"Why is Galileo called the 'father of modern science'?" (Because he made great contributions to physics and astronomy, and stressed proving ideas through experiments.)
"How did Edison invent the electric lamp?" (He used the method, trying more than a thousand different filaments.)
"What was Edison's attitude toward his failed experiments?" (He did not feel discouraged; he regarded them as valuable experience — "I have found one thousand materials that won't work.")
"What did Newton mean by 'standing on the shoulders of giants'?" (Scientists build on the research of those who came before them.)
3. Third Reading (True or False): Have students judge the statements:
"Roger Bacon lived in the 19th century." (F — 1214–1292)
"Galileo believed people should go into nature and prove their ideas through experiments." (T)
"Edison tried only a few filaments before he found the right one." (F — more than a thousand)
"Edison felt discouraged by his failed experiments." (F — he did not)
"Newton said he saw further by standing on the shoulders of giants." (T)
4. Check Answers: Discuss the answers as a class.
Step 4: Language Points
1. Explanation: Use the PPT to explain the key language points with clear examples:
philosopher (n.): 哲学家 — philosophy (n.), philosophical (adj.); That ancient philosopher's ideas still influence us today.
observe (v.): 观察;观测;遵守 — observation (n.), observer (n.); Scientists observe the behaviour of animals in the wild. / Good scientific results come from longtime observation.
prove (v.): 证明;证实;结果是 — proof (n.); We need facts to prove his idea. / It proves that patience matters in experiments.
(n.): 反复试验,试错法 — trial (n.), error (n.); Many new skills are learned through .
investigation (n.): 调查;研究 — investigate (v.), investigative (adj.); carry out an investigation, scientific investigation; The team began an investigation into local water quality.
efficiently (adv.): 高效地 — efficient (adj.), efficiency (n.); We should learn to manage our time efficiently.
substance (n.): 物质;材料;实质 — substantial (adj.), chemical substance; This natural substance is harmless to human bodies.
discouraged (adj.): 灰心的;气馁的 — discourage (v.), courage (n.), encourage (v.); Don't feel discouraged when you meet small difficulties.
react (v.): 作出反应;回应 — reaction (n.), reactive (adj.), reactor (n.); How will the metal react to high temperature?
statement (n.): 陈述;说法;言论;声明 — state (v. & n.), statesman (n.); make a statement, official statement; He made a clear statement about his research plan.
2. Practice: Complete the : multiple choice exercises on the PPT. Check answers together.
Step 5: Post-reading & Group Discussion)
1. Group Discussion: Students work in groups of four. Take 10 minutes to discuss the following questions:
01 Inspiration from Scientists: Which scientist's story inspired you the most? Explain the reason and what valuable lesson you learned from their journey.
02 : Experience: Describe a time you used to solve a problem. What steps did you take, and what was the final outcome?
03 Applying the Scientific Spirit: How can we apply core scientific principles — like observing, experimenting, and critical thinking — in our daily lives and academic studies?
2. Sharing: Invite a few groups to share their discussion with the class.
Step 6: Summary & Homework
1. Summary: Review the key vocabulary and the four scientists' contributions. Summarize the key message:
Science begins with observation and experimentation.
is a valuable method for discovery.
Scientists build on the work of those who came before them.
We should develop the scientific spirit in our daily lives and studies.
2. Homework:
Review the new words and phrases.
Write a short paragraph (50–80 words) about a scientist who inspires you, using at least 5 new words from this lesson.
思政渗透与学科育人有机融合点Subject based Character Education
This lesson cultivates students' scientific spirit and critical thinking by introducing the contributions of great scientists such as Roger Bacon, Galileo Galilei, Thomas Edison, and Isaac Newton. Through their stories, students learn the importance of observation, experimentation, , and perseverance in the face of failure. Edison's attitude toward his thousand failed attempts teaches students not to be discouraged by setbacks but to view them as valuable learning experiences. Newton's famous saying about "standing on the shoulders of giants" encourages students to respect and build upon the work of others. The group discussion about applying the scientific spirit to daily life and academic studies promotes the practical application of these values. This aligns with the goal of nurturing curious, resilient, and scientifically minded individuals who are eager to explore and contribute to human knowledge
