This week on Ask a Teacher,we answer the following question from a listener.
Dear teacher,
Could you please say more about the meaning of "appeal?"
Thank you.
Let's look at the many ways we can use the word"appeal".
As a verb,"appeal"means making a request,often in official situations.Generally,we do
not use"appeal"for everyday requests. For example,we would not say:
I appeal to you to get some milk at the store.
Appealing
We can change the meaning of "appeal"by making it an adjective. One way to do this is to
use the -ing ending.Consider the following exampies:
Her dress looks really appealing.
That argument is appealing to many voters.
Used as a nou肚
"appeal"describes a formal or urgent request,for example:
The employees made an appeal to reduce the number of hours of work.
As a noun,"appeal"also describes a quality that creates interest, sympathy,or attraction.
Here are some examples:
The museum's design has a lot of appeal.
The appeal of that music is its simplicity.
Using“appeal”in the law
"Appeal"is also often used in legal matters-both as a noun or a verb.As a noun,it means
a formal request to a court to review a decision by another court. If one court accepts the other's
request,we can say the court "granted"the appeal. If the court rejects,we can say the court
“denied''it.
The following example shows"appeal"being used as a verb in legal English:
The defense team will likely appeal the decision.
An adjective form of“appeal”is also used in the legal system. The adjective“appellate”
describes a kind of court that deals with cases that have been appealed.

I studied graphic design at university, and after graduating, landed a job a few towns over.
My commute involved a train,a bus,and a walk down a country lane in my high-vis
jacket.Like many,I had that classic thought:I don't want to be doing this for the rest of my life.
So I decided I'd write a book, convinced it would be my ticket out of the 9-to-5 routine. So,like
many first attempts,.I was immersed in a novel that was rubbish,And as the cliche(陈词滥调)
goes, life happened and writing slipped to the dustbin.
A few years later, searching for my purpose and longing for a better work-life balance,I
began training as a tutor.Around the edges of that,I tried writing, including Amy Sparkes'
Picture Book Course during lockdown. However, disaster hit when Irealized my draft was
essentially a nonsense that had been done before.I felt ready to give up.And then I asked myself:
What story can I tell that's completely unique to me?Something no one else can write? And
that's how my first novel,Officially Losing It,was born.My agent and I were very excited about
that.
Later,we received so much encouraging feedback on my voice, but editors struggled to
figure out exactly where the book would sit on the shelf. So we didn't sell.As they say, that book
died on sub.But my lovely agent didn't give up.She reached out to an editor who'd previously
loved my writing and voice and said,"Are you absolutely sure you don't want to publish this?
Because Becca is great."
The editor-the wonderfully amazing Amy Mae Baxter-said,"Afraid not,but I do have
an IP project I think Becca would be perfect for.Would she like to have a go?"So,I did.I knew
in my heart I wanted to write this book.Clearly that passion shone through.Later,I got the job!
There was still plenty of space to make the book entirely my own,and Amy and I were so
creative that it was a total joy from start to finish.
So is this the end of the story?OF COURSE NOT!Onwards I roll, still full of optimism,
brimming with ideas, and one step closer to that desperately dreamed of ideal life!
24.What was the key factor that led to the birth of the author's first novel?
A.The technical skills from Picture Book Course.

A new study out of King's College London is giving people more of a reason than ever to
plan a museum date.It was conducted by the researchers from the university, who got half of the
participants,including 50 volunteers,aged 18 to 40,to view pieces by world-famous artists
Manet,Van Gogh, and Gauguin in The Courtauld Gallery in London. The control group,on the
other hand, looked at copies of the same artworks in a non-gallery environment.
All of the participants'heart rate variability and skin temperatures were measured with
sensors throughout the 20-minute art-viewing sessions, and saliva (samples were also
taken before and after viewing.
The researchers found that cortisol levels-a key stress hormone (in the human
body-fell by an average of 22%in the gallery group, compared to just 8%in the control group.
The participants viewing original art in the gallery also had more active heart activity, which
shows that art attracts the body.Another key finding was that pro-inflammatory (
proteins IL6 and TNF-alpha also dropped by 30%and 28%respectively for those viewing art in
galleries, with no observable changes for the control group.
"Stress hormones and inflammatory markers like IL-6 and TNF-alpha are related to many
health problems, from heart disease to anxiety and depression,"explained Dr.Tony Woods, the
study's senior author."The fact that viewing original art lowered these markers suggests that
cultural experiences may play a real role in protecting both mind and body.
Other previous studies have linked regular gallery visits to long-term well-being,but this
study is the first to "capture real-time physiological benefits",which shows an immediate
positive impact."This study proves for the first time that art really is good for you. What's
particularly exciting is that the findings show these benefits are pervasivethey can be
exporienced by anyone,"said Jenny Waldman, the director of Art Fund."We want to encourage
everyone to make time to visit their local museum or gallery, and discover just how good art can
make you feel.”

Cooking is a unique cultural phenomenon at the core of human creative efforts.Recipes,
flavour, nutrition, and health form the pieces of the food puzzle. In the last decade,computer-
based food science has developed as a powerful data science aided by structured collections of
cooking databases,field-specific algorithms ()and applications.
For instance,RecipeDB,a structured collection of recipes from global cuisines and
underlying algorithms that can identify culinary elements,is ripe for exploration. This
organized database can help estimate the nutritional value of dishes, among other things.
Similarly,FlavorDB represents the taste and smell correlates(相关的事物)of food ingredients,,
recording the reasons behind their use in cooking.Data from studies on the health effects of food
and estimated carbon footprints of recipes highlight important health and environmental impacts,
crucial for public health and sustainability.
Attempts have been made to develop recipe generation algorithms via text generation and
LLMs(Large Language Models),like Ratatouille,powered by 118,000 global structured recipes
and advanced named entity (recognition.Yet it is harder to evaluate computer-generated
recipes than LLM-written poetry, paintings or music. The "Turing Test for Chefs"has experts
rate recipes-both traditional and AI-geuclated-on a scale from 0(AI-made)to 5 (human-
made).Delhi hotel management final-year students tested Ratatouille, with LLM models
achieving 69.88%F1-score success. The algorithm behind it provided detailed instructions on
ingredients and quantities,pre-processing steps, cooking steps, and the appropriate cookers and
methods.
Novel recipe-generation strategies have the potential to create tasty and nutritious dishes
with public health consequences. When combined with appropriate data, these can also generate
personalised,cost-effective,and environmentally sustainable recipes. However, taste will remain

a crucial faotor iu the acceptance of AI-generated recipes. Therefore, the skill and creativity of
chefs will be essential to make sense of the output of AI.More and more cooking-related data is
available now,and cooking involves complex senses.AI will help boost people's creativity, but
it can never take people's place.
32.What do RecipeDB and FlavorDB have in common?
A They focus on health effects.
B.They teach cooking methods
C.They clarify the cooking logic.
D.They analyse food interactions
33.What do we know about Ratatouille?
A.It addressed taste-related issues.B.It offered standardized operations.
C.It skipped pre-processing stcps
D.It outperformed professional chefs.
34.Why is AI unlikely to replace chefs?
A.It lacks consideration of taste.
B.It misses enough culinary data
C.It creates dishes without novelty.
D.It misinterprets customers'needs.

Ambivalence(矛盾心理)refers to the frustrating and all-too-common experience of being
"on the fence"about making some change. For example, you must have said,"I should start
exenelsing, but it's tough to find the time."36Yet how often do we view ambivalence as
some sort of interloper(干涉者),an unwanted and unexpected roadblock on the path to a better
life?
37 Whon we lack understanding about the uncertainty, our ability to effectively resolve
it becomes limited.Furthermore, without a clear understanding of the underlying reasons,we
risk employing harmful labets that may conveniently but inaccurately explain the reason for our
inaction and that of others."I must be lazy.""She has no self-discipline."
A helpful standpoint for us to better understand the roots of ir tlecisiveness comes from a
research-based therapy approach called motivational interviewing.38 You can also make a
difference via this method,no matter whether you decide to eat less junk food, lose weight,or
reduce screen time.
From a motivational interviewing viewpoint, the root of ambivalence is related to the extent
of importance and confidence in making a change. If we con't feel strongly that it's important to
make a change or we lack confidence in being able to talra the nccessary steps, chances are very
high that we will waver(on moving forward.39

【答案】Possible version 1:
Travel Far,Know More
The old saying"A person who travels far knows more"reveals that distance isn't measured
in miles, but in the widening of our minds.
Last year,I hiked along the ancient Silk Road in Xinjiang.Standing before a weathered
beacon tower in the Gobi Desert,I suddenly sensed the loneliness of ancient guards stationed there.
Running my fingers over the rough bricks,I felt centuries of dust come alive.Later,I was offered
warm flatbread by a local Uyghur family, whose genuine hospitality touched me a lot.
That far journey didn'tjust open my eyes;it opened my heart to lives and stories that no
books could ever capture. And that,I believe,is the true reward of traveling far.(120 words)
Possible version 2:
Travel Far,Know More
The proverb"A person who travels far knows more"suggests that stepping out of our
comfort zone exposes us to realities beyond books.
I learned this truth in a remote village, planting rice alongside locals. We stood in the muddy
fields, bending over for hours under the scorching sun, until my back ached and my legs were
covered with mosquito bites. An old woman with a sunburnt face smiled and handed me a bowl of
tea, which moved me to tears.I came to help, but left knowing the cost of every grain and the
warmth of strangers.

M:Faye,what are you doing?
W:I'm making a cake for my friend Jenny. It's her birthday.
M:Oh,I thought it was for a wedding or something.Anyway,is it a fashion nowadays that you
put salt in the cake mix instead of sugar?
W:What are you talking about? It's of course sugar that I'm putting in my...Oh,no!What an
idiot I am!I was so careless.
M:Calm down,Faye. From what I see,you haven't put too much salt in it yet.Let me help you
limit the damage.
W:Thanks,Frank.
M:Sure.First,we use some honey and sugar to make the salty flavor neutral. Then let's put some
apple juice,no,lemonade would be better...Last we add some chocolate pieces...Done!Do you
want to faste the cake mix?
W:Sure.Hmm...Wow!
M:So?
W:It's wonderful!Even better than I had expected before!

M:I can't believe this.I have been on the phone with my bank all day and they still haven't fixed
my problem.
W:Is it a credit card probiem?
M:Yes.My credit card information was stolen. When I got my bill in the mail,I saw there were
many unfamiliar purchases on it.
W:That's terrible.Did they take a lot of money?
M:Yes,and I am very upset because the bank is not helping me quickly
W:Doesn't the bank's manager decide to give your money back?
M:No.I just have to prove that these purchases were not made by me.I think the person who
stole my information got it from the Internet.I didn't download anything recently.I just bought a
collection of movies.I won't be doing that again unless the website is sure to be safe. It's honestly
my fault for being careless.
W:You can never be too careful.

M:Books have always been an important part of people's lives.Libraries were important parts of
both universities and town centers, and many of the first successful companies in modern times
made their money by selling books.Like newspapers, publishers used to have a lot of power and
influence, but nowadays, the companies that control digital information seem to have taken over.
In particular,e-books have replaced traditional books for most modern readers, especially in big
cities, for whom everything has to be easy to carry and convenient to use.Tech companies like
Amazon and Apple sell "e-readers"that can contain thousands of books, and their online stores
list millions of titles, far more than any bookstore could ever hold.As more and more people buy
computers,smart phones,and tablets,the market for e-books continues to grow.Many traditional
book publishers and bookstores have gone out of business. For example,Border's Group used to
be one of the largest bookstores in the United States, with more than 600 locations and billions of
dollars in sales every year. But after e-books appeared, they started losing money and had to close
all their stores.
