B At university, Wang Miao had a dream of working for the UN. In 2018, she became the first Chinese winner of the UN’s “Young Champions of the Earth” award*. In some ways, her dream has been realized through her work in marine conservation (海洋保护). Wang loves diving (潜水). However, as she spent more time in the water, she began to see not only the ocean’s beauty but also its suffering. “Every time I see marine life stuck in fishing nets on the ocean floor, I feel a strong need to act—even if one person’s efforts may seem small,” Wang said. She decided to do something to protect the ocean, so she set up Better Blue in 2017. The journey was not easy. In the beginning, the biggest challenge was that many people believed ocean pollution had little to do with them. What kept Wang going was the support from the diving community. In her eyes, divers are the best choices for marine conservation as they have a deep love for the ocean. However, marine conservation cannot be limited to divers. Wang and her team are trying to make more people realize why marine conservation matters. Over the past few years, marine conservation has gradually caught people’s attention. “More young people are asking how their studies can contribute to ocean protection,” Wang said. “Seeing this gives me the greatest sense of satisfaction.” Note: * the UN’s “Young Champions of the Earth” award联合国“地球卫士青年奖” 31. But to understand what the trees tell us, we first have to understand the difference between weather and climate. Weather is a specific event—like a rainstorm or hot day—that happens over a short period of time. Weather can be tracked within hours or days. Climate is the weather conditions in a place over a long period of time (30 years or more). Scientists at the National Weather Service have been keeping track of weather in the United States since 1891. But trees can keep a much longer record of Earth’s climate. In fact, trees can live for hundreds—and sometimes even thousands—of years! One way that scientists use trees to learn about past climate is by studying a tree’s rings. If you’ve ever seen a tree stump (树桩), you probably noticed that the top of the stump had some rings. These rings can tell us how old the tree is, and what the weather was like during each year of the tree’s life. The light-colored rings represent (代表) wood that grew in the spring and early summer, while the dark rings represent wood that grew in the late summer and fall. One light ring and one dark ring represent one year of the tree’s life. Because trees are sensitive to local climate conditions, such as rain and temperature, they give scientists some information about that area’s local climate in the past. For example, tree rings usually grow wider in warm, wet years and they are thinner in years when it is cold and dry. If the tree has experienced difficult conditions, such as a drought (干旱), the tree might hardly grow at all in those years. 36. Paragraph 2 is developed mainly by ________. A. making comparisons B. telling stories C. showing causes D. following the time order 37. Dark rings would appear when the tree grew in ________. A. spring B. early summer C. fall D. late winter 38. The underlined part “are sensitive to” in the last paragraph means ________. A. make a big difference to B. are easily influenced by C. get used to D. help to protect 39. Which picture shows the rings in dry years? A. B. C. D. 40. What is the text mainly about? A. The life of a tree. B. Tree rings and seasons. C. The need to plant trees. D. Trees and climate change. D Beijing will not cut down its grown poplar and willow trees even though they cause a “catkin (柔荑花序) problem” each spring. The city says these tall trees are very important for the environment and cannot be easily replaced. “These trees grow fast, give good shade, absorb (吸收) CO2 well, and are not costly to keep,” said Jiang Yingshu, an official from Beijing’s park department. Jiang explained that a tree with a trunk 30cm wide is usually 30 to 40 years old. If we replace it with a small young tree, it will take 30 to 40 years for the young tree to help the environment in the same way. Instead of removing all these trees, the city is slowly replacing those old and weak female trees, which produce the fluffy (覆有绒毛的) seeds. The catkin season started on April 6 and will end in late May. To deal with the problem, the city has a special plan. Garden workers first use high-pressure water to wash the tops of the trees. Then, street cleaners quickly clear the catkins from the roads. The city has set up over 100 monitoring stations to watch the catkin cycle. Every day, officials discuss the situation with experts and give forecasts and warnings to the public. To solve the problem from the beginning, the city works together with research centers and colleges. They have collected about 400 samples of trees with few or no catkins. From these, they got 16 better types of trees and raised 100, 000 young trees. Workers also spray a kind of safe, harmless liquid using special equipment. On the tops of the trees, the liquid forms a thin “eco-film”, which can reduce catkins in the air by more than two-thirds for each tree. The liquid breaks down naturally in rain and sunlight. Wu Di, a resident in Beijing, said the government should do more to communicate these efforts to the public. “Many things we worry about are what these departments are already working on,” said Wu. “While they are taking action, they should also explain clearly to the public.” 41. How does the city deal with catkins during the season? A. By planting fewer female trees. B. By asking people to clean the roads. C. By spraying water and a special liquid. D. By stopping the trees from producing seeds. 42. What is the purpose of developing new types of trees? A. To make the city greener and larger. B. To create trees that produce fewer catkins. C. To provide more wood for building houses. D. To replace all the old trees within five years. 43. What effect can the safe and harmless liquid have on trees? A. It can make catkins disappear totally within a short time B. It reduces over two-thirds of catkins in the air for each tree C. It helps the trunks of poplars and willows grow thicker fast D. It stops rain and sunlight from reaching the tree tops 44. What does Wu Di think the government should do? A. Consider the public’s advice more. B. Tell the public more about its work clearly. C. Spend more money on researching new trees. D. Solve the catkin problem as soon as possible. 45. What is the passage mainly about? A. The reasons for protecting old trees in cities. B. The troubles with the environmental restoration. C. Beijing’s ways to deal with catkins and save trees. D. Public’s suggestions on solving the catkin problem. Do you have trouble memorizing things?
