Let’s do an experiment to see how water, warmth and light influence the way a seed germinates. ★Materials ①dried beans ②6 clear ziplock bags ③paper towels ★Steps Step 1: Put a few beans into three ziplock bags and mark them “sunny”, “dark”, and “cold”. These will be your dry bags of beans. Step 2: Moisten (浸湿) three paper towels, fold each wet paper towel in half and put some beans inside the folded wet paper towels. Step 3: Take three more ziplock bags and mark them “sunny”, “dark”, and “cold”. Place each wet paper towel with its beans into a ziplock bag. These will be your wet bags of beans. Step 4: Place one wet bag and one dry bag marked “sunny” by a sunny window. Step 5: Place one wet bag and one dry bag marked “dark” in a warm and dark place, such as a closet (壁橱). Step 6: Place one wet bag and one dry bag marked “cold” in the fridge. Remember: Check the bags once a day, and add water to the wet bags if the paper towels start to dry out. ★Results The dried beans and the cold beans will not grow. The beans need water and warmth to start growing. They don’t need light to germinate underground. But once their leaves start growing, they need light to stay healthy. 26. What should we do to make beans wet according to the text? A. Moisten the beans directly. B. Put the beans in wet ziplock bags. C. Put the beans in the fridge. D. Hide the beans in wet paper towels. 27. What is the right order of the experiment? A. ①②③④⑤⑥ B. ②①⑤④③⑥ C. ③⑥④②⑤① D. ④③①⑥⑤② 28. How often should we check the bags? A. Once a day. B. Three times a day. C. Five times a day. D. Seven times a day. 29. Which of the following is TRUE about the results of the experiment? A. The beans need water and warmth to start growing. B. The dry beans will not grow but the cold beans will grow. C. The beans need light to stay healthy when they germinate. D. The leaves of the beans will grow well underground even without light. 30. In which section of a newspaper can we probably read the text? A. Travel. B. Sports. C. Science. D. Culture. B Recently, I asked a seeing friend who had just walked in the woods what she had noticed. “Nothing special,” she replied. How was it possible, I asked myself, to walk through the woods and see nothing worthy of note? I who cannot see find hundreds of things to interest me only through touch. If I can get so much pleasure from touch, how much more beauty must be found by sight (视力)? And I have imagined what I should most like to see if I were given the use of my eyes for just three days. On the first day, I should want to see the people who have made my life worth living and the books which have been read to me. In the afternoon, I should take a walk in the woods and admire the beauties of nature. That night, I should not be able to sleep. On my second day, I should go to the museums to see man’s progress. I should try to explore the spirit of man through his art. In the evening, I should spend at the movies. The following day, I should spend in the world of common people going about the business of life. At midnight, permanent night would close in on me again, and I should realize how much I had left unseen. I who am blind can give one suggestion to those who see: Use your eyes as if tomorrow you would be blind. The same is true of other senses. Hear the songs of birds, as if you would be deaf tomorrow. Smell the flowers, as if tomorrow you could never smell again... But of all the senses, I’m sure that sight must be the most pleasant. (Adapted from Three Days to See by Helen Keller) 31. What makes the writer start imagining the three days? A. Walking in the woods. B. Asking herself questions. C. Seeing natural beauty. D. Touching interesting things. 32. Never leave until tomorrow what you can do today. C. Live every moment and be thankful for what you have. D. The future belongs to those who are preparing for it now. C Some research has suggested that higher air temperatures may be the cause. However, two new studies show that ocean warming played a bigger role in this dramatic change. As part of global ocean circulation (全球海洋环流), warm saltwater moves southward from the tropics and circles Antarctica 200 metres below the surface. But temperature and saltiness records of the past 20 years suggest that this warm deep saltwater has been rising towards the surface, where it can melt (融化) sea ice. Antarctica is encircled by a belt of strong winds and storms. Climate change has pushed this storm belt southward, bringing more rain and snow into the sea ice area, according to a study by Earle Wilson and other researchers at Stanford University. The rain and snow create a layer (层) of fresh surface water that better protects the bottom of the sea ice from warm deep saltwater, allowing it to grow to its 2014 record high. But the same southward-moving storm belt also brings stronger winds. These winds blow surface water and ice forward. As this happens, warm deep saltwater rises up to fill the empty space. Between 2014 and 2016, this wind-driven rising began to get the upper hand against the protective layer of increased rain and snow, and sea ice began to melt away. When the researchers input the recorded ocean data (数据) into a computer model, it projected that sea ice would grow and then become smaller, as it did in the real world. The researchers plan to study and model other things, which also likely play roles throughout Antarctica. Examples include changes in sea ice movement and increases in ocean mixing resulting from more storms. By studying the ocean data, they hope to build a model to project changes in Antarctic sea ice in the years to come. 36. Which of the following best shows the Antarctic sea ice changes around 2015? A. B. C. D. 37. In which order are the following events discussed in Paragraph 2? ①Warm deep saltwater rises to the surface. ②A layer of fresh surface water is created. ③Surface water and ice are blown forward. ④More rain and snow are brought into the sea ice area. A. ②④①③ B. ②④③① C. ④②①③ D. ④②③① 38. What can we learn from the passage? A. Higher air temperatures are the main reason for Antarctic sea ice change. B. The warm deep saltwater flows northward from Antarctica to the tropics. C. The computer model agreed with the real changes of Antarctic sea ice. D. Scientists have finished studying all factors influencing Antarctic sea ice. 39. What will the researchers do next according to the last paragraph? A. Stop collecting ocean data around Antarctica. B. Build a model to predict future Antarctic sea ice changes. C. Prevent storms from moving southward around Antarctica. D. Find ways to stop warm saltwater from melting sea ice. 40. Which of the following is the best title for this passage? A. Where is Antarctic sea ice loss taking us? B. Is this the cause of Antarctic sea ice loss? C. Will a new model explain Antarctic sea ice melting? D. How does fresh surface water protect Antarctic sea ice? D A Reunion Rooted in the Desert Ronald Sakolsky is a retired American high-school history teacher. He had a warm face-to-face hug with Yin Yuzhen, a famous Chinese expert who works to stop deserts from spreading. This put an end to their 27-year-long friendship across the Pacific Ocean. Invited by the China Education Association for International Exchange, the 69-year-old man flew to Beijing early on August 23. Later that same day, he met Yin Yuzhen at Ordos Airport in Inner Mongolia. In 1999, Sakolsky worked as an English teacher in Luoyang, Henan Province, under a China-US teacher exchange project. At that time, he read a news report about Yin Yuzhen, who worked hard to fight against desertification (沙漠化) in Inner Mongolia. He was deeply touched by her work to bring life back to the dry, sandy land. He collected 5,000 dollars from American people to support Yin’s tree-planting work. Before receiving this money, Yin and her husband had already planted about 5,000 acres (亩) of trees near the desert. The young trees bought with the money have grown into over 50,000 big trees. Early in May, Yin tried to look for her long-lost American helper online. Soon after that, the two talked with each other through a video call on the Internet. What started as a small area of green under Yin’s care has become much larger over many years. Now more than 8 million trees cover over 11,000 acres of land. This land used to have no plants and looked lifeless. Sakolsky’s trip to China lasts from August 23 to September 1. During this trip, he will visit Beijing, Henan Province and Inner Mongolia. In the following days, he will plant trees together with Yin Yuzhen, talk with students from his old school in Luoyang, and join in China-US educational exchange activities. Sakolsky thinks Yin Yuzhen is a hero. He says their friendship of many years means more than just improving the environment. He believes that if two common people can break cultural differences and build trust over thousands of miles, more people from different backgrounds can do the same thing. Their story shows us the value of personal communication between Chinese and American people. 41. What do we know about Ronald Sakolsky from the first two paragraphs? A. He mainly raised money for his trip in China. B. He contacted Yin Yuzhen online before coming to China. C. He taught history in Luoyang in 1999. D. He planted 50,000 trees with Yin Yuzhen in Ordos. 42. Which is TRUE according to the passage? A. Sakolsky’s China trip ends on August 23. B. The $5,000 donation directly grew 8 million trees. C. Sakolsky will give environmental talks at Ordos Airport. D. Yin Yuzhen had planted many trees before Sakolsky gave money. 43. What does Sakolsky want to tell us in the last paragraph? A. Ordinary people can also build good friendship across countries. B. Planting trees is the only way to stop deserts. C. Chinese and American people have no cultural differences. D. More heroes should come to China for environment projects. 44. What will Sakolsky do in China? A. He will teach history in Inner Mongolia. B. He will join in some China-US exchange activities. C. He will help raise more money for desert control. D. He will move to Luoyang and teach again. 45. What is the main idea of the passage? A. Serious desert problems in Inner Mongolia. B. How Yin Yuzhen finished her tree-planting work. C. A long cross-Pacific friendship and a special reunion. D. Different China-US educational exchange projects. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题1分,满分5分) E 阅读下面短文,从短文后所给的五个选项中选出能填入短文空白处的最佳选项,使短文通顺、连贯,意思完整。 Building good relationships with classmates or schoolmates is not only good for learning but also important for personal development. ____46____ Get to Know Your Classmates Start by asking and listening. 【答案】36. A 37. D 38. C 39. B 40. B.
