But you may not know that this river wasn't always as clean as it is today. Ten years ago, the river was heavily polluted. Hotels and restaurants along the banks poured waste water directly into the river. Tourist boats left oil and rubbish behind. The number of fish dropped sharply, and local people stopped swimming in the river. In 2016, the local government started a clean-up project. Hotels and restaurants were required to install wastewater treatment systems. Tourist boats were replaced with electric ones that produce no pollution. Along the riverbank, trees were planted and walking paths were built. The results have been encouraging. By 2024, the water quality of the Lijiang River reached Grade Ⅱ—the second highest level. Fish have returned in large numbers, and locals swim in the river again. "Twenty years ago, the river was beautiful and clean," said Mr. Chen, a 55-year-old boatman who has worked on the river for more than thirty years. "Then it got dirty. But now it's coming back. He began his university studies in 1938 and received his Master of Science degree from Tsinghua University in 1944. In 1945, he went to the US for further study. After earning his PhD, he continued his physics research and achieved great success. Yang is still considered one of the greatest physicists of the 20th century. Together with Tsung-Dao Lee, Yang was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1957. In 1971, Yang made his way back to China. Moreover, he offered advice and had a great influence on China's scientific projects. Yang also attached importance to training young people. In 1999, he began teaching at Tsinghua University. At the age of 82, Yang still taught four classes a week. Besides teaching, he also donated his money to support nearly 100 Chinese scientists. These scientists later played important roles in China's scientific and technological development. Yang said, "My main goal here is to help Tsinghua University train young people and to guide them to follow the right path in study and research. It is a goal worth achieving." At that time, they had to carry water from the river at the foot of the hill to halfway up the hill. Even though they worked so hard, the production of fruit was still low because the area was short of water. One day, two young men led a group of workers to our village. They learned about our difficulties, and later, a canal (灌溉渠) began to be built in my village. "Who are they?" I asked. "They are good men from our government," Grandma replied. Then I moved to a city for my middle school. During one summer holiday, I came back to my hometown with my parents. When we arrived there, we were astonished because everything had changed. We saw the canal running through every orchard. And my grandma told us that after the canal was completed, villagers didn't have to go up and down the hill to carry water anymore. And more and more people started planting fruit and the production increased a lot. Thanks to the government's canal project, our village has developed much better. 根据材料内容选择最佳答案。 31. Some may say courage, some may say wisdom, and others may say kindness. 36 But most people would agree on one thing: admirable people do not do great things for themselves, but for others. Many of us look up to famous people. Scientists who spend their whole lives on one question, doctors who save patients day and night, and teachers who light up their students' future — these people win our respect. 37 They show us what a person can achieve with hard work and a strong will. However, heroes do not have to be famous. 38 A father who works two jobs to support his family, a classmate who quietly helps others, or a neighbour who looks after the old people on his street — they may never appear on the news, but their everyday choices make the world warmer. What, then, is the secret of an admirable person? First, they are honest with themselves and others. Second, they are brave enough to do what they believe is right, even when it is hard. 39 They may fail many times, but they stand up and try again. Most importantly, admiring someone does not mean copying them. 40 If a great person's story touches your heart, let it encourage you to become a better person yourself. In this way, their light lives on in you — and that is the true power of inspiration. A. Their stories are like lamps that light our way. B. Admirable people are always patient with others. C. It means learning from them and growing in your own way. D. The people around us can also be our heroes. E. There is one more thing: they never give up easily. 三、完形填空(本大题共10小题,每小题1分,共10分) 阅读下面语篇,从各小题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。 Qinglong Village in Guizhou was once a poor mountain village. Today, I'd like to recommend Song of Autumn, one of the poems by Liu Yuxi (772—842), a famous poet and writer in the mid-Tang Dynasty. Just as shown in the first line of the poem, most ancient poets liked to describe autumn as a sad time, but in this poem the season appears differently. In Liu's eyes, autumn, full of life and hope, is even better than spring morning. He describes the bright scene of a crane (鹤) riding the clouds and flying into the blue sky. His poems pay special attention to expressing personal feelings, as well as the daily life of common people. Though being translated thoughtfully by experienced translator Xu Yuanchong, the poem still reads not so beautifully as that in Chinese. I personally think that English is sometimes not so powerful as Chinese. Here is another example. In Liu's essay A Eulogy on the Humble Dwelling (《陋室铭》), with less than 100 words. He shows a lively picture of his humble cell. However, it also shows how he was pleased with the poor and simple life. People may find it strange that one can feel happy living in such a humble cell. Learning from his famous sentence, "This is a humble dwelling, yet it boasts a fine reputation thanks to my virtuous character (斯是陋室,惟吾德馨)", I think to be a respectable (值得尊敬的) man is more important than to live in big houses, to wear beautiful clothes, to enjoy delicious food, and even to get knowledge. 61. Which dynasty was Liu Yuxi from? 62. What did most ancient poets usually describe autumn as in their poems? 63. Who translated the poem Song of Autumn mentioned in the passage? 64. How many words does Liu Yuxi's essay A Eulogy on the Humble Dwelling have? 65. What does Liu Yuxi show through A Eulogy on the Humble Dwelling besides the picture of his humble cell? Dear Tom, How is everything going?
