Beijing Opera is one of the most representative (典型的) of all Chinese traditional drama art forms and the largest Chinese opera form. Having a history of about 200 years, it is developed from many other drama forms, mostly from the local drama “Huiban”, which was especially popular in South China during the 18th century.
Theatrical (戏剧的) art forms in many other countries do not have singing, dancing and spoken parts together in one single drama. An opera singer, for example, neither dances nor speaks on the stage, there are no singing or dancing parts in a modern play in a dance drama, the dancer has no speaking role and doesn’t sing, either. Modern Beijing Opera actors and actresses also try to popularize this ancient art form among young people. “You will doubt and sometimes be a little bored but you will be interested gradually. You will be strongly attracted to Beijing Opera, even if you know nothing about the drama background.” This is how one traveler described his first experience after watching Beijing Opera.

In your school, are you allowed to choose the subjects you want to learn? Of course, the answer is “No” here in China.
In America there is a school trying something new. At a high school in Florida, students will be able to choose their own classes. We all know that some students are better at some subjects than others. Some students plan to go on to college, while others will not. At this school, students are able to find subjects they are interested in, and possibly even find the field they would like to go into after school. They are allowed to choose a subject like biology, math, a foreign language, or study skills like computer or car repair.
Some people think this is a good idea, because it helps students think about what they want to do in the future, and the school helps to give them the knowledge and skills needed to get there. They say that giving the students the chance to choose their own classes makes high school more interesting. Others disagree. They think that fourteen-year-old teenagers are too young to know what they will want to do in the future.
What do you think? Would you like to be able to choose your own classes? Many useful changes have been made in education, but seeing the differences in each student is also important. How can we help each student become a better student?

D. Some students do not care about their own future.
19. What does the underlined word “field” in the passage mean?

Everyone loves gifts! But each country has different customs.
As a European living in China, I’ve seen some interesting differences from home. For example, in China, people often give fruits and milk. In Europe, these are usually for hospital visits. Many Europeans open their gifts right away, although not in places like Germany. It’s also important to take off the price tag (标签) before giving the gift. What if you don’t like your gift? In Spain, you still need to say you love the gift so you don’t hurt the other person’s feelings. But if they remember to leave the receipt (收据) inside the gift, you can just change it for something else.
How the gift looks is also important. However, by using wrapping paper (包装纸) for every gift we buy, we make a lot of waste. Now, many are choosing newspapers or maps as wrappings to help the environment.
Do Europeans give money as gifts? Yes. Polish couples, for example, often request cash (现金) at weddings to cover the cost of the venue (活动场地) and meals.
Finally, remember: It’s the thought that counts, not the size or the price of the gift.
21. In the writer’s country, people can bring fruits and milk when visiting patients.
22. Germans have the habit of opening their gifts at once.
23. In Spain, if people don’t like the gifts they receive, they can tell the givers directly.
24. At weddings in Poland, cash can be given as a gift to cover the cost of the venue and meals.
25. The writer tells us that different countries have different gift-giving customs but share the same kindness.

Do you find it hard to get out of bed in the morning in winter? It’s not surprising—the cold temperatures make us unwilling to leave the warmth of our beds. ____26____

We may eat less fruit and vegetables, enjoy more sugary food, and not exercise as much. ____27____
Unluckily, no matter how our bodies change in winter, we have to get up. ____28____ Get a sunrise alarm clock. This can help wake your body up when the alarm clock goes off. Try putting your alarm clock across the room so you have to get up to turn it off. ____29____ This will make your room warm and comfortable when you get out of bed.

Zheng has been playing the erhu since she was 9, and she has won prizes in many national music competitions. Zheng arrived in Italy in 2021. Since April 2023, she has been performing on the street during her free time. And now she does three or four street shows a month.

Even I could not help dancing along with them,” Zheng said.
After performing a few times, Zheng began sharing videos of her street shows on the Internet.
And these videos soon became popular online. Zheng says she wants to show the beauty of Chinese erhu to the world. “I believe that Chinese music has built a bridge for cultural communication,” she says.
