Unit 1 Science Fiction
语言输入:教材引导学生关注科幻叙事的表达(be programmed to / in the year 2080 / a world where…)、制造悬念的句式(Suddenly… / To his surprise…),以及表达思考的句子(What if…? / It made me wonder whether…),并提示细节要具体,让想象“可信”。

The Robot That Learned to Say Sorry
In 2080, every family has a robot. Mine is called Ada, and she cleans, cooks and remembers everything.
One evening, Ada broke my mother's cup. She stood still for a long time, then said, “I am sorry.” We were surprised, because robots were not programmed to apologize. My father checked her system and found no error, only a new line of code she had written herself.
That night I wondered: if a machine can feel regret, what does that make us?

A Review of The Wandering Earth
The Wandering Earth is a Chinese science fiction film about moving the Earth out of the solar system.
When the sun begins to die, humans build huge engines to push the planet to a new star. The story is full of impossible choices: who to save, what to leave behind, and whether hope is worth the cost. The scenes of the frozen city are unforgettable.
Some scientists say the physics is wrong, but the film asks a real question: what would we do for our home?

Science Fiction and Real Science
Hello, everyone. Many scientists say they first fell in love with science through a story, not a textbook.
Science fiction takes today's knowledge and asks what if. Satellites, submarines and mobile phones all appeared in stories before they appeared in shops. Science fiction gives us a picture of the future, and pictures make people work harder than formulas.
So read a story, then ask how it could come true. That question is where science begins. Thank you!

Dear Chris,
You asked for a science fiction novel. I strongly recommend The Three-Body Problem by Liu Cixin.
It begins with a secret from the 1960s and grows into a story about contact with an alien civilization. What I like most is not the technology but the questions: should we answer a message from space? Can humans work together when we are afraid?
The English translation is excellent. Tell me what you think when you finish it.
Yours,
Li Hua
